Jaguar S-type owners have reported 33 problems related to automatic transmission (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jaguar S-type based on all problems reported for the S-type.
After engaging reverse, the transmission froze. The transmission would not shift from reverse and into drive or any other gear. The vehicle had to be towed to the shop. The diagnosis was "[transmission] cable selector bolts backed out. " the vehicle was repaired after the installation of new selector cable bolts. Had these bolts come loose while driving on a busy street, a serious crash would have occurred. I have just read where other Jaguar owners have also reported this malfunction to NHTSA and decided to report it, too.

I purchased a 2001 Jaguar S-type less than a year ago. It has less than 70000 miles on it and while I am driving down the road the motor starts revving up and it won't shift. . . . It says gearbox fault. Apparently this is a common problem among this model of car. I was pulling out to make a left turn and was nearly hit because suddenly the car wouldn't go. How many complaints do you have to have to force a recall? I purchased this car because I thought it would be a safe dependable car. Very poor craftsmanship!.

The vehicle that I have a complaint in regards to is a 2002 Jaguar S-type. The vehicle was driving sluggish and the transmission was not shifting at normalcy. I then took the vehicle in to the Jaguar dealership to be serviced and explained to them that a transmission fault light had been triggered. Upon their examination the dealership discovered the transmission needed to be replaced. I asked the dealership if they had many cars in with the same make and model as my vehicle with the same problem. The dealership stated that they did in fact have been seeing this issue with many of S-type Jaguar vehicles. I then placed a call to a transmission re-builder to inform him of the issue and before I could explain my problem he was already familiar with the issue due to the many S-type Jaguars transmission he had rebuilt with the same issue.

The contact owns a 2003 Jaguar S-type. Approximately one week after the vehicle was purchased in December of 2008, the contact noticed that it would shift roughly from second to first gear upon deceleration. The vehicle would also jerk forward roughly when accelerating and driving 15 mph. He found NHTSA campaign id number 04v024000 (power train:automatic transmission) and noticed that it was the same failure that his vehicle was displaying. The dealer stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall; therefore, they were not liable for the repairs. The manufacturer was notified and agreed with the dealer. The current mileage was 41,923 and failure mileage was 40,600. Updated 5/18/09
the consumer stated the parking brake was inoperative. A failure message of the parking brake displayed on the dashboard. Updated 05/20/09.

I own a 2000 Jaguar S-type with only 42k miles on it. I drive it only about 6 weeks a year as it is stored the rest of the year. My transmission is gone! my car has only been serviced by the piehler Jaguar dealership. Without warning, the "gearshift box fault" light came on; the engine would bang and drag into gears. I was told that the gear shift box was sealed therefore disallowing anyone to add transmission fluid. Since my car has only been serviced by Jaguar, why wouldn't the service manager have indication that the transmission was going. I asked the service manager if there has been any recalls on the Jaguar transmission, and he told me no. That was not true as I have found recalls concerning the Jaguar S-type transmissions. However, the Jaguar manager wants customer to pay instead of dealer-pay for the replacement of a new transmission. The price quoted to me is $4,000 plus tax. I had the deluxe extended warranty and when it ran out, this dealership refused to renew another extended warranty. A car of this cost and caliber should not have transmission problems with mileage under 50,000 miles. I would like the Jaguar /dealership/ or Ford to replace the transmission due to the defective design in the transmission design. The car's error message indicated "gear shift box fault". I've been told that the Jaguar transmissions were built by Jaguar/bec transmissions with a flaw in the design. The Jaguar dealership I have my car at is piehler Jaguar in rochester, NY. The service manager's name is brian. The telephone number is 585. 671. 7909. I would like to have my car repaired due to this fault in transmission design and paid for by the dealership or Ford or Jaguar. Please advise. Thank you. Barbara postell 2000 Jaguar S-type owner.

- while driving the 2002 Jaguar s type with 30000 failure and current mileage at 40 mph and accelerating up a hill the vehicle began to unexpectedly lose speed. The vehicle got to the top of the hill, then came down the hill, and it lost power. The vehicle was pushed to the side of the road. The driver tried to restart the vehicle, but nothing happened. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealer who stated that "the transmission needed to be replaced". The vehicle has not been repaired.
Bought S-type back in October 2006, since then car has been costing me a lot of money. Transmission get stuck in park at driveway with low inclination, even with the parking brake on before shifting to park. Had cable replaced and didn't fix the problem, cost me 350. 00. I believe that a recall was in order for the number of affected vehicles that I had noticed complaining of it at the NHTSA website, or maybe somebody in government was not doing his/her job protecting the consumer's rights against greedy corporations.
I have had 4 tranmission replaced in my 200 Jaguar in the last 2 1/2 years and the light in own at this moment regarding the transmission light. I need some one to contact me regarding this.
: the contact stated while parked on a hill with the front of the vehicle facing upward, the transmission locked up completely when a shift from park to drive was attempted. A service dealer was consulted, who notified the contact that this was a common problem, and that it was a factory defect. However, the vehicle was not taken in for service. Updated 09/11/06.
: the contact stated the gearshift was difficult to shift into drive or reverse from the park position. The gear shift fractured while the contact attempted to shift the gear into drive. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop. The service dealer and manufacturer were not contacted.
On several occasions I've had problems with my 2000 s type Jaguar. The transmission causes many safety problems. Such as not shifting, hesitation etc. Which could be a major safety issue while driving on the hwy. Once my fiance was driving the vehicle and the hesitation of the transmission caused him to slam into the curb causing major damage to the front end. I've also had the transmission gasket replaced at the dealership. Now its back in the shop awaiting a new transmission. Jaguar is not taking any responsibility of these problems. Several other Jaguar owners have experienced similar problems. Thank you for your time. Lisa b upshur.

When parked on a hill I am not able to get the car into or out of park and reverse I have to literally have someone push or rock the car to get it out of gear, bergen Jaguar in bergen new jersey said this is a common quirk with the 2000 s type Jaguars with automatic transmissions.
I purchased a 2000 s type Jaguar 6/10/06, at the cal wholesale dealership in rio linda CA and just the following day already had problem with gear shift linkage. Dealership had it repaired at sam's auto repair however it continued to have resistance upon shifting. Reported problem advised to bring car in, and was told it was fine. 8/22/06 completely unable to shift from park to drive. Called dealership, who in turn called sam's auto repair, contacted me but I'm still waiting for them to tow it. I hope you can investigate and find out more why Jaguar hasn't revealed these problems?.
The contact specifically stated that while driving, the vehicle shifted into reverse. There was a loud bang and vibration. The contact moved the vehicle away from the highway and realized the vehicle was in reverse. He drove the vehicle to a nearby mechanic and asked him if the vehicle was safe to drive. The mechanic advised him to drive the vehicle home. The next day the vehicle was inspected by a local mechanic, and said that the dog in the back seat may have hit the gear shift and caused the change of gears. The contact did not feel that this actually happened. The mechanic stated that the transmission exploded and lost transmission fluid. A service dealer said that this could have happened because the vehicle ran over something in the road. The manufacturer has not been contacted yet, but was sending him an email as soon as he filed a complaint with NHTSA. Updated 12/27/05.

2003 Jaguar s type experiencing problems with the emergency brake engaging while driving. When the emergency brake applied, it caused premature wear of the rear brakes and tires. Also contributing to the premature wear of the tires were problems with the rear end of the vehicle. There was a recall on the emergency brake, but the dealer refused to replace the rear brakes and tires. The vehicle has been in the repair shop on 3 occasions for a jerk in the transmission. Prior to purchasing the vehicle, there was a recall on the transmission, however the dealer failed to disclose the information to the consumer. The consumer stated one time she placed the gear into drive, but the vehicle did not move, thinking she had placed it into the wrong gear, she looked down and the vehicle lunged forward.
Our 2002 Jaguar s type with 44,000 miles has transmissions problems. We contacted the dealer on several occasions and they will not stand by their vehicle. There have been numerous complaints regarding transmissions problems with the company. We need help getting this problems solved. Why should I have to spend thousands of dollars to fix. This is a $60,000 vehicle. Help.
While parked on a slight incline the vehicle gear shift lever became stuck. Towed vehicle to dealer, and consumer was informed right away what the problem was.
1st time car was parked on an incline, and after returning the gear shift will not move out of park. Then , car was towed to dealership, who repaired the problem. Afterwards, once again vehicle was parked on an incline and vehicle would not come out of park. Talked to a jauguar representative, who suggested replacement of the part. Then, Jaguar representative arranged meeting with a new dealership for a diagnostic. Mechanics stated that they were aware of the shift lever. Problem. Dealer reported there was no solution for this problem. When problem occurred dealer suggested that consumer pull emergency brake when this occurred, and rock the vehicle to get it out of park. There was a service bulletin about this. Issue. Owner wrote letter to the Jaguar to make them aware, and was waiting to hear from dealer.
Owner of a Jaguar S-type 4. 0, 2001, 54,000 miles : a warning light came up indicating "shift gear failure". The car was taken to the dealership as per their request to investigate the situation. After 3 days I was told that a new transmission was needed. I asked how a relatively new car, very well kept (every service was done on time and at the dealership) could have this major problem. I was told that this type of car frequently have this problems. Jaguar is replacing the transmission with a refurbished one for a cost of $2240. 00 plus tax. What can I do to get some of this expense back. Do I have a valid claim ? it is just hard to see an expensive car like this have this type of problem and since the insurance expired (50,000 miles) just be told to take it or leave it. Actually I was told that Jaguar was doing me a favor by providing such an inexpensive transmission that they tipically cost about $6,300. 00.
In the 1 1/2 years that I have owned my vehicle it has been int he shop 15 times for various reasons: electrical, transmission, front end problems, steering, accelerations etc. . . Jaguar has been dragging their feet for 4 months in rectifying problems. Consumer affiars is worthless and have accused me of "outgrowing" my car. Not concerned about their customers just doesn't want their car back.
Without warning vehicle lost power. This caused the consumer to pull of the road. Consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealership, and mechanic determined transmission failed.
Consumer was unable to engage the shift lever into drive. Vehicle was towed to the dealer.
When parking on a hill the transmission locked and caller could not get vehicle out of park. Caller broke the shift lever and had it replaced, but problem recurred. Dealer said that was normal, and he would have to put emergency brake on before putting it in park. But sometimes the problem happened even when he put on the emergency brake. Manufacturer claimed the same thing as dealer said.
The consumer is having trouble moving the gear from park to drive especially while on an incline. The vehicle has to be moved or shaken from the outside in order to release the gear. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, but the cause was undetermined.
Purchased a 2000 S-type Jaguar to find that there is a design flaw. As a previous automotive engineer, I can't believe that this can be allowed to exist. I parked my car on an incline and when I tried to leave I could not put it into 'reverse', or any gear. I pulled on the shifter thus breaking a pin, causing the shifter to 'free' float. I called Jaguar's customer care, which is great, and found that they were going to have to tow my car to the dealership. During the problem solving questions they asked, they stated "was I on an incline". I responded "yes". They then proceeded to inform me that the "fix" was to get out of the car and rock it back and forth to release the pressure on the transmission/shifter. That on inclines the car will get stuck, so get out and push it. My car had the shifter completely replaced and the dealer was aware of this issue with this car. Since then I've had this happen 2 more times. I was told to put on the parking brake then shift to park while on any type of incline (> a few degrees). I've had that told to me by three Jaguar customer service specialists. I love this car. Why can't they fix this! it's embarrassing and dangerous! someone can be seriously hurt.
On my 2000 S-type 4. 0 I have had two transmissions replaced and is in need of a third. Jaguar's position (from corporate), that it is not unusual for a transmission to go under 50,000 miles, however, they refuse to put it in writing. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of owners going through the same problem. On every website there are complaints about failing transmissions. Jaguar definitely is aware of the problem but offers no assistance. I am willing to bet there is some corporate memo regarding how to cover this up.
The consumer complained about a transmission problem. When the forward drive gear was selected and the vehicle was in drive or stationary, the gear box could potentially select the reverse gear without notice.
I leased a new 2000 Jaguar S-type in April of 2000. Since that time , the tranmission was faulty. Jaguar found the problem to be a faulty transmission and replaced it. Since that time, I've experienced numerous problems related to the transmission. The main problem is a very serious safety issue dealing with the car rolling back while in drive. When on a moderate incline, the vehicle will roll back 10-15 feet while engaged in drive. The only way to stop this roll is to either gun the engine(which is also unsafe) or apply the brake and quickly give the car gas. This is occuring on a moderate incline! I have advised Jaguar and the dealership to no avail. They have tried to fix the transmission 4 times now and still don't know what is causing this. The last time I brought the car in, the service manager(mike barnes) test drove it and the same problem happened to him. He tried to correct the problem and again their mechanics coulkd not do it. I then asked for a receipt stating he and I were in the vehicle when it rolled back 10 feet before aplying the brake and he would not do this for me. I then contacted the sales manager on call on April 2, 2000 @3p. M. And he said there was no reason why I couldn't have a reciept stating the car rolled back 10 feet with me and mr. Barnes in vehicle. After the sales manager questioned mr. Barnes numerous times on the issue, mr. Barnes stated and I qoute-"it is in the best interest of the dealership that I don't write a reciept stating this". I was present at the time of this statement and appalled that he would risk me life to cover for the dealership. Idemanded a receipt and still did not receive on stating the roll back, instead he gave me one saying I was just there and every thing checked out to dealer specs. I said what is dealer specs and mr. Barnes stated he did not know. This is fraud and a cover up. I since have contacted a lawyer, lemon law office, center for auto safety, better business bureau and the states attor. *a.
While driving consumer heard a loud bang and 2002 Jaguar s type began vibrating. The gear shift had moved from drive to reverse. The consumer took the vehicle to a local garage where the mechanic determined that the transmission had exploded and hit the floor with a major loss of fluid. The consumer was waiting on the mechanic's determination to see if something could have possibly hit the undercarriage of the vehicle. If that was the case the consumer would be able to file a claim with his insurance company.
While driving and without warning transmission went out, causing vehicle to be inoperable.
When vehicle is placed into drive it will buck into reverse first. Acceleration power does not feel like it is controled by pedal when applied. Dealer has not been contacted.
