1 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2020

My 2014 Jeep Cherokee will stall unexpectedly. This has happened while accelerating and/or turning at a stop sign or red light. I took it to the dealership and they described it as follows "the stalling is a safety feature when the oil gets low". The dealership checked the oil and it was very low. This is a repeated problem and happens before the recommended 5000 miles oil change frequency. The last time it happened, the "oil life" screen said I had 28% oil life left ( I had been following it to avoid stalling out unexpectedly. . . . Which didn't help and I once again stalled at a red light in traffic). My main safety concern is the fact that there is no indicator light for low oil, and the first indication is my car stalling out in traffic which could cause a wreck. This can't be safe nor meet safety guidelines/requirements. My second concern is the fact that my engine is burning off that much oil so quickly (verified to have no leaks in the system). When searching the internet, I have found this to be a common problem with people stating they also had no indication except for the sudden stalling out. I feel this is something that should be fully investigated as a safety concern. It seems to have at least enough of a case to be a lawsuit in two states (California and michigan) at the time of me writing this- sep2020.

2 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2020

I need to put oil in my car at least two times in between oil changes. My car has stopped multiple times when I turn because it ran out of oil. The engine burns oil so fast. I don't drive that much. This is expensive and very very dangerous. This car needs to be recalled.

3 Engine Burning Oil problem

Oil filter housing cracked spilling oil on top of motor very common problem fire hazard part has been redesigned from plastic to metal noticed oil all over engine burning smell when driving and parked.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2019

2014 Jeep Cherokee~50k miles: bought brand new from dealership and exclusively dealer maintained. . . A year ago 2 things spontaneously started happening to my Jeep. 1-as I would slow down and come to a stop my car would shut off, stall out. 2-as I was driving my electronic throttle control light, check engine light, and electronic stability control light would start flashing and the Jeep would not run right. I would pull over, turn the car off, reset the engine light and then I would be able to drive until it happened again. Sometimes it would happen after 5 miles of driving, other times I would go over 100 miles without incident. I had approximately 25% remaining on my oil life cycle-last oil change less than 6months/5000 miles. I tested the battery and a few things before I brought it to the dealership. Dealer said my oil level was dangerously low and I need a fuel system cleaning. They did an oil change and fuel cleaning, asked me to come back after driving 1000 miles for an oil consumption test. They said the result of the test was within normal limits. A year later, again around 20% oil life remaining-less than 6 months and less than 5000 miles since last oil change I am getting the same symptoms-all three lights coming on, car stalled on separate occasion. Will be bringing back to dealer this week, however this car has received all oil changes by dealer within the proper time and I take good care of the car- this seems a bit dangerous and should not be happening. It affects my commute to work, child care, time, etc.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2019

As I approached an intersection and pushed on the breaks the car stalled out. Warning lights came on. After restarting the car it stalled out again when I tried to break a second time. This has happened at least 4 times. The last time it happened, the car stalled out in the middle of a main roadway as I approached a red light; I was almost rear-ended. I tried to restart the car. Once I got it restarted I tried to put it in gear and the car bucket and stalled out again. I tried a number of times to restart the car and eventually got it started. I eventually got it into gear and started to drive off the roadway. The car drove very jittery and with little to no power. Most warning lights on the dash came on - 4wd inoperable; put car into gear and restart, service transmission, traction control problem, battery problem. I have had it to two dealerships. Once said it was the battery; I replaced it. The other first said it was oil consumption with the engine but when that turned out not to be the case the dealership and Chrysler/Jeep are telling me that this is a problem due to overfilling the gas and that the only fix is not to top off the gas tank. Really? this only started at @ 42,000 miles. Also, I don't think the gas was topped off each time this happened. I also live in a state where you cannot pump your own gas so if the gas station puts too much gas in the car stalls and creates a safety hazard? how much is too much gas? there is nothing in the car manual. There is no warning in and around the gas tank. This is a very serious problem and causes a very dangerous car to operate. There either needs to be a real fix for this problem or the cars need to be taken off the road.

6 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2018

My Jeep Cherokee keeps repeating the same problems. This has been going on for more than a year. Sometimes I am terrified to drive because I do not know what is going to happen. Today and on other days, the Jeep has cut off on me a few times while in motion on a city street and sometimes when turning. The vehicle slams into gear when driving sometimes and feels like I am getting hit in the rear of the car. It is very dangerous because you don't know when it is going to happen. Today, the Jeep almost caused an accident when it just stopped on its own. Additionally, it often shifts gears erratically and very rough, even jerking at times. The dealership said they did a software update but this did not resolve the issue. I have taken to the dealer at least three times about this issue and I keep getting stalled saying either come back in 500 miles so the can do an oil consumption test or that they cannot duplicate the issue. Each time I take it in they say the did a software update or an oil change. The problem remains.

7 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2017

My vehicle has always had difficulty shifting and would often have hard shifts between gears. At 22,562 miles I brought my car in for this issue, prompting Jeep to update my vehicle's software. The problem persisted, but I was told it was just the performance of my 4-cylinder engine. At mileage 58,160 while driving on the highway and merging lanes, my vehicle completely lost any ability to accelerate and lost all power functions. I was able to use the vehicle's momentum to get into the breakdown lane. The vehicle had a message on my driver's dash instructing me to shift the car to park. After doing so the vehicle still would not start until I shut it off and restarted the vehicle. Again, Jeep re-programmed my computer. One week later, on 9/25/2017, the vehicle had the engine seize again while driving at approximately mileage 58,511. Jeep determined that the oil level was very low, even though a full-synthetic valvoline 5w20 had been completed at 53,335 miles and the fluid levels were checked at the dealership one week prior to the incident. The dealership performed an oil change, instructed me that after 50,000 miles it is acceptable for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee models to burn off 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles and to monitor the oil levels going forward. I mentioned to the dealership that the oil levels had just been inspected at the dealership one week earlier, on 9/18/2017, and was told that fluid levels were normal. As a result, the vehicle would have been burning oil much faster than the 1 quart per 1,000 miles acceptable threshold. I was asked to see if the new oil change would resolve the issue, and to bring my car in at around 60,000 miles to check the oil levels. At 62,052 the vehicle seized again and, upon diagnosis, oil levels were fine. Jeep can determine the problem and cannot offer a solution. It has happened two more times over the last month.

8 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2017

Jeep stalls or won't start, try to start multiple time until finally starts and omits white smoke. Took to dealership, after checkup, Jeep is low on oil but is not due for oil change. Dashboard reading shows only 62% oil used. Mileage between last oil change was 4839 miles. I was advised that vehicle oil consumption was within limits. Had oil changed then same problem ensued again 3. 5 months later mileage between oil changes is now 3637 miles driven, dashboard shows 48% oil used and dealership gives me the same excuse. Oil is low but no leakage anywhere and consumption is within guidelines for my vehicle. Changed oil again and will see what happens in the next 3 to 4k miles. I'm sure I will be back again. How many times do I need to take my vehicle in for the same problem before they look deeper for the root of the problem. Oil should only be change every 6000 to 8000 miles, this is how it was in the beginning when I purchased it now the mileage between oil changes get lower and lower.

9 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2017

I place 2 complaints for the same vehicle - on last 3 years, last complaint is from yesterday 06-15-2017 on engine section, the previous complaint was from 2016 electric system section. Defective engine oil hyper-consumption and oil sensor malfunction cause electric system collapse, car stop on highways, cause life threatening situations. After read hundreds of the same complaints here, I decide contact Jeep headquarters and request valid documentation about car oil consumption. On Jeep manual is 10 000 miles, or 16 000 kilometers ! for all who are surprise with dealerships information's about engine oil consumption , when they start oil test - here is valid information, which you can use on contact with dealerships. Please find online Jeep document TSB 09-007-15 pdf form here is important part of document: the accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in the vehicles listed above is 1 quart (0. 946 liter) in 2,000 miles (3,200 km) for the 1st 50,000 miles (80,467 km). For vehicles with more then 50,000 miles (80,467 km) the acceptable oil consumption for engines is 1 quart (0. 946 liter) in 750 miles (1,207 km). 10 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2017

Engine oil consumption and oil sensor on Jeep Cherokee 2014 - sport engine caused on last 3 years several life threatening situations not just for me,but also for cars driving around me on highways. Each time I call dealership, dealership make technical control. For 2 years dealership was not able find solution for problem, recommended make oil exchange more frequently the 5000 miles for prevent problems ! last year 2016 was on Jeep recall finally change oil sensor, but that doesn't help. My last life threatening situation is from Saturday last week 06-10-2017. Jeep stop on highway, completely paralyzed for 3-4 minutes, just red battery blinking. I was lucky, maneuver with car and prevent several collisions with cars driving around me form highway middle line behind very danger curve ! after 3-4 minutes I was able restart engine and drive to quick oil, because from previous years experiences I know, then this problem is connecting with oil sensor. On car display was oil "good" on quick oil service, serviceman find then there is any any oil on engine he show me scale on which was residual oil which look like asphalt. By quick oil ticket I need oil exchange on next 1600 miles - by recommendation for dealership I change oil each 5000 miles, so accident is happened after driving just 3400 miles. Any oil leakage from engine was find, problem is caused by defective engine oil consumption. Manager from quick oil immediately call Jeep dealership, describe problem on phone, send with me writing description of problem and data to my Jeep dealership. The same day from quick oil service, where they put to Jeep engine oil for free - I driving to my Jeep northgate dealership and start engine oil consumption test - I have return each 1000 miles to dealership for oil consumption monitoring. Situation is very danger, need find solution ASAP !.

11 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2017

Excessive oil consumption. Using 3 1/2 quarts of oil in the oil change mileage of 3000-3400 miles. Once engine oil level reaches 2 quarts of enigine oil, engine will automatically stop with no low engine oil light or warning. It will stop on highway , street, driveway, no matter where you are. Which to me is a safety issue. Supposedly it is designed to do that so the engine will not burn up. Jeep said they recognize 1 qt of oil consumption for every 1000 miles for a vehicle over 50,000 miles which to me is excessive especially with today's industry standard.

12 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2017

While driving on a city street at about 40 mph, the vehicle shut down and I could not accelerate or steer. I received the message on the message center that said "car must be in park in order to shift. " the vehicle started again after about 30 minutes and numerous attempts. The following day, I took the car to the dealer. I ended up being told that they found no oil in the motor, they did an oil change and I should begin an oil consumption test. I should note, I had gone almost 6,000 miles since my last oil change when this occurred and received the "oil change required" message on the message center for the first time that very morning. The dealer told me this is a known problem with this model year and engine. I asked why I didn't get some type of warning light. Was told that this model does not have a low oil indicator light. I said ok, but it does have an oil pressure light and a check engine light, why wouldn't one of those come on? they had no answer. I started monitoring the oil myself every 250 miles. After I drove 1000 miles, the oil was at the same full level as it was when the oil change occurred. I went back to the dealer and they came to the same conclusion. I was told to come back again in 1000 miles. I was monitoring the situation for the next 1000 miles and, as of the the day before I took the car in, the oil level dropped about half way down the "full zone". The dealer told me the oil was exactly the same as before and there is nothing wrong with the car! I am fortunate the car stalled while I was driving at a relatively low rate of speed. After researching, this is a common problem in this year's model that Jeep is aware of and it sounds like the only solution to the problem is to replace the engine. I was told the same by the dealer initially, but now I am being told there is nothing wrong with the car.

13 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2016

When slowing for a stop sign the car stalled once 5 days ago but restarted after shutting down and it was fine. Then yesterday morning it stalled 3x before leaving my development. I drove to have the battery checked locally and it was ok. I drove to the dealership who told me the problem was because the oil was low, that these cars burn a quart of synthetic oil every 2000 miles and "when the oil runs low they shut off to protect the car. " what?? and how dangerous. I questioned a recall recently received about Jeeps stalling while driving and was told it wasn't related. I'm really just in awe and disbelief that this could be a feature that the manufacturer planned for!.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2016

My Jeep stalls without warning while in motion. Chrysler was notified as well as my dealer. They both indicate that I need to add oil between 750 to 2000 miles to prevent a stall. The stall is a "safety" feature that prevents the motor from seizing according to Chrysler. Oil consumption tests were completed at 500 miles with no negative data. There is no warning when the vehicle stalls to include an oil pressure warning. Every 750 miles seems excessive and I would like to think that if the vehicle is operating at low oil pressure, that a warning light would indicate that you are about to stall. Chrysler has closed my complaint with no further action and indicated it was the owner's responsibility to monitor every 750 miles. Each stall was while in motion and on a busy road. The date provided is approximate. Stalls have happened multiple times and we replenish synthetic oil with significant regularity.

15 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. While driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle burned an excessive amount of oil and stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened case number: 32089788. No further assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 90,000.

16 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

2014 Jeep Cherokee. Consumer writes in regards to transmission problems. The consumer stated on October 7, 2014 as she pulled out onto the highway, the vehicle stalled. She managed to drift to the side of the road. She let the vehicle sit for a minute and then re-started it. She bean to drive and the vehicle began to buck and lost power. She pulled over for a second time and let it sit for a minute, attempted to re-start it which was successful, but she couldn't go over 25 mph. She drove to the dealer. The dealer kept the vehicle for a week. A diagnostic test revealed a problem with the transmission. One month later, as she was pulling out onto the main road, the vehicle lost power again. The consumer claimed the vehicle wasn't scheduled for an oil changed for another 1,000 miles. The dealer advised the consumer to bring the vehicle back within 3,000 to see if the vehicle was burning oil.

18 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

The vehicle lunges after you stop as if it is down shifting. Sometimes it bangs and jumps suddenly when taking off from a stop. The transmission seems to have not down shifted and is in too high a gear causing the engine to pause before suddenly downshifting and suddenly accelerating which sometimes it to abrupt and you have to slam on the brakes to keep from hitting traffic. We have had several reprograms of the transmission without any resolution. The last caused the car to suddenly lunge and jump out into traffic while sitting at a stop with the brake on and no gas applied. We could have caused an accident. . . The motor has started leaking oil from the oil filter and cooler assembly on top of the 3. 2 liter v6. It appears it has a bad gasket or seal or it may be cracked. I see several other owners complaining of this be cause you can smell burning oil, we removed the top engine cowl and carry a fire extinguisher just in case it catches fire. It appears that you could easily lose most of the oil and seize the motor not to mention catch on fire. The rear hatch camera and controls malfunction in wet weather. The camera turns to snow or moving objects appear frame by frame and not in real time. The controls fail to allow gate operation. I contacted Jeep today and am taking it in for the oil issue and will try to get them to fix the transmission and rear gate issues. This is a danger to drive when it can launch into traffic or leak oil causing a fire or short out the gate from an electrical fire. Jeep needs to get these issues addressed.
