1 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/01/2021

Vehicle has stalled (completely shut down with no steering ability) while driving on 3 separate occasions. No warning lights of low oil or issue with vehicle. Burning through oil at 1 quart for every 800 miles (unheard of) for casual driving in normal conditions. Car will rev very high and not change gears smoothly. Hesitation on starting and hesitation and sputtering on normal acceleration. Many issues and have only had the vehicle for less than 3 months.

2 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/30/2021

While driving my Jeep suddenly shut off. This happened twice, so I took it to liberty Jeep in libertyville. I was told that they would need to do a pcm reprogram and that it will now burn 1 quart of oil per every 1000 miles and that I would need to keep an eye on it to continue to top of the oil so the Jeep doesn't shut down. This is not acceptable for a dealership to say. I am fearful of driving long distance on highways with this now and would like to get out of this lease. I have attempted to discuss with the dealership and I haven't had any luck. Owner or managers do not return any emails or phone call. This is very disturbing.

3 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/14/2021

Vehicle is stalling due to excessive oil consumption. . . . . No oil indicator light comes on. But vehicle even when oil indicator gage says there is oil. . . . The oil is low and causes stalling. There is a recall for this vehicle for excessive oil consumption. Stalls when vehicle is stationary in traffic. Brought the car in for oil consumption test. They said everything was normal and to change oil every 3000. Thuis does not fix the underlying issue. Reading online there seems to be a class action suit and dealerships are not helpful with this issue. Nervous to drive long distance especially when no indicator lights illuminate to let you know you are low on oil.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/09/2021

Burns though oil like a cheap alcoholic. Usually 1 quart is burned off every 1000 miles. This was something I was not aware of when I purchased the Jeep. When this first happened, initially I was told it was an electrical issue with the shifter. So that was a $500 repair. Later I found out that 2017 Jeep Cherokees have a unique ability to drink oil. If fca is aware, and not fixing the issue, thats bull crap. I have an older car with a similar engine and can put 10,000 miles between oil changes w/o an issue.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/19/2021

Oil change and recall completed 3,000 miles ago for oil consumption issue. Drove 3,000 miles and stalled on roadway immediately following a right hand turn. During shutdown there was steering control loss. Pulled car off road and checked dipstick. Dipstick was dry. Added 2. 5 quarts oil. This car still consumes approximately . 75 quarts of oil per 1,000 miles. Will restart oil consumption test with Jeep dealer immediately.

6 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/09/2021

Car turns off while driving. No maintenance indication on dash. I check the oil and there is no oil even after a recent oil change. All maintenance has been with the same dealership car service. This has ocurred 5 times since purchase. Car service team has changed maintenance frequency to every 1300 miles to monitor oil consumption but have not determined root cause. Again, this has happened while driving (all 5 times) on city streets.

7 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/15/2021

I have had my car for two months and drove less than 2000 miles and my 2017 Jeep Cherokee apparently burned off most of the oil within that time and no low oil light came on and the oil was low. I would start driving my car and it would just shut off. Apparently this is a common problem. There is no reason why a oil light shouldn't warn you, the only warning you get is your car shutting off while driving down the road. This is not safe! here are many other complaints with the same problem. . Read more...

8 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/11/2021

This vehicle stalls out in traffic and stutters when started. Even when the autostart button is "on" the car hesitates and stalls from stop to go. I have almost been hit when trying to pull out from an intersection from a stop. The SUV smells of burning oils all the time. I set a service appt with the dealer to assess the stalling problem and burning oil smell. I was told that the stalling was from the "engine performance" and nothing could be done. As far as the burning oil smell, I was told the engine burns through 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles and I will need to constantly check the oil. They cannot do anything about it, it is the way it is made. This is unacceptable and extremely dangerous! Jeep has not been very helpful.

9 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/07/2021

Car with 60,000 miles on it is consuming large amounts of oil. No low oil warning or anything. Instead the vehicle stalls completely while driving. This is a major safety concern. I was merging onto a major highway yesterday when this happened and the car behind me had to swerve into the ditch in order to not hit me. How is this allowed to be Jeeps standard practice for letting you know your oil is low. And why on earth does a new car burn through oil?.

10 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/05/2021

Engine shuts off with no warning! apparently when oil is low, engine is built to shut off as a safety feature! no oil light indicator comes on. This happens in the middle of driving vehicle with no warning. Checked the forums online and many people complaining of same issue. These vehicles (mine included) are burning oil like crazy! issue has been occurring since vehicle had 60k miles on it. Will burn through 5 quarts of oil in 3k miles or less and then vehicle will shut off because of no oil!.

11 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/04/2021

Eight times now my 2016 Jeep Cherokee will just quit. Dealership keeps making me check my oil myself. I am 3000 miles before a scheduled oil change and the vehicle has just stopped running while driving 50 mph again. This is very dangerous . I live in a rural area where the speed limit is 55 on almost all roads. I was almost hit by a semi waiting for a tow. I got home and again my oil is low. My car is not leaking oil. Again I will have to tow to dealer for them to put oil in and do nothing to fix this oil consumption problem. The vehicle is in full motion. Dashboard gives a warning to put car in gear while driving. When it is in gear.

12 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/30/2020

On multiple occasions my 2019 Jeep Cherokee has stalled out, with out warning, while I was driving, once on the freeway at 70 miles an hour in heavy traffic. After several trips to the dealer I was informed that this engine, the 2. 4l has a systemic problem, in that burns about a quart of oil every 1000 miles and when the oil gets too low the engine just shuts off. No warning lights, just shuts everything off. At 70 miles per hour in traffic, having the engine stop and suddenly losing power steering and trying to move though traffic to the shoulder while rapidly decelerating is very dangerous. The dealer and fca are offering no solutions for this issue. From a public safety perspective this vehicle should be recalled, not to mention the environments costs and consumer protection aspects.

13 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/23/2020

The vehicle is burning oil and even though the oil light doesn't come on the vehicle will stall and die while driving because it's burning oil. This should not be happening as there is no indication of any low oil until the stall. Keep needs to fix this or will be sued when an accident occurs because of an engine stall without any indicators.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

Car burns oil at an excessive rate-pouring in about a quart per week. If it gets too low (even before suggested oil change mileage) the engine shuts off while driving. No warning or indicator lights. The entire engine shuts off while you are driving down the road. Currently happened 3 times to me-oil was low each time. Very scary!.

15 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/19/2020

Oil consumption on vehicle with less than 50k miles. 3 to 4 quarts low at every 5000 mile oil change. Causing vehicle to shut down while driving on city street. No warning light to inform you of low oil.

16 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/16/2020

While driving my vehicle I was on an off ramp going 45mph when the engine quit working. With difficulty I was able to get the vehicle to the side of road. When I attempted to start it. It took a while to start up the vehicle. I called. To. Get an appointment for the Jeep to be seen. The problem occured every day until it was seen at the dealership. The vehicle has 19 k and oil. Is changed on or. Before recommendations. The dealership. Stated that the oil. Was changed and was. Oil level is low. The dealer stated it is common for Jeep with 2. 4 l engine to burn 1 qt oil ever 1000 miles. This is ridiculous. No vehiclw does that. The worst part is the oil light never. Comes on. The dealer was sneaky and. Called. Where I get my oil. Changed to see if I was getting my oil changed regularly. There is a. Well. Documented problem with the 2 4 l tigershark motor.

17 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/31/2020

Engine burned one quart of oil in 458 miles. After 2 quarts down engine will stall.

18 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/30/2020

Nhtsa personnel - I want to report a serious (safety) problem with our 2019 Jeep Cherokee. In the last 2-3 weeks, my wife has experienced a sudden stalling of the car without any warning or notification. This is a serious problem since she was on the road on her way to take our kids to school. Luckily, no one was behind her and she was able to restart the car. Today (10/30), I called our local Jeep/Dodge dealership to scheduled an appointment for this issue. As I was describing this problem, the service rep told me to check the oil level of the Cherokee due to a known "oil consumption problem. " sure enough, I checked the oil level in the car and there was hardly any oil. Soon after, I went to walmart and bought 5 qt of 0w20 synthetic oil. Drove the car afterwards and no stalling occurred. Please help to pressure fca us llc or Jeep to fix this issue right away via recall or rework. Engines can be replaced but not lives - this is a safety problem!! sincerely, manuel (manny) penaloza 2019 Jeep Cherokee owner (with only 14,341 miles) wichita, KS 10/30/2020.

20 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/21/2020

I've needed to add a quart of oil every 1000 miles since the vehicle was new. I returned the car to the dealer at approximately 3200 miles and was put on an "oil consumption monitoring program" where I returned the car every 1000 miles for measuring the oil consumption. This was done every 1000 miles and the car now has 15,700 miles. When I returned to the dealer time before last, I was told to drive it another 1000 miles, return and if oil must be added, Chrysler will "replace the engine. " when I scheduled my last consumption check, I was told Chrysler now upped the checking interval to 1500 miles. I therefor drove the car another 500 miles and returned to the dealer on 9/21/2020 where the the car was checked in. After the car was checked, the service check in guy told me they added another quart, and that I needed to put yet another "1500 to 1700" miles on the vehicle, then return for another final check, and if oil was needed, they would (once again) replace the engine. I understand from the service personal, that if the engine oil quantity drops to two quarts below full, the engine will shut off, and that this has happened numerous times.

21 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/19/2020

My 2014 Jeep Cherokee will stall unexpectedly. This has happened while accelerating and/or turning at a stop sign or red light. I took it to the dealership and they described it as follows "the stalling is a safety feature when the oil gets low". The dealership checked the oil and it was very low. This is a repeated problem and happens before the recommended 5000 miles oil change frequency. The last time it happened, the "oil life" screen said I had 28% oil life left ( I had been following it to avoid stalling out unexpectedly. . . . Which didn't help and I once again stalled at a red light in traffic). My main safety concern is the fact that there is no indicator light for low oil, and the first indication is my car stalling out in traffic which could cause a wreck. This can't be safe nor meet safety guidelines/requirements. My second concern is the fact that my engine is burning off that much oil so quickly (verified to have no leaks in the system). When searching the internet, I have found this to be a common problem with people stating they also had no indication except for the sudden stalling out. I feel this is something that should be fully investigated as a safety concern. It seems to have at least enough of a case to be a lawsuit in two states (California and michigan) at the time of me writing this- sep2020.

22 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/08/2020

Bought car in 1/20 with 2. 4l tigershark engine. Using excessive amount of oil; garage did not diagnose and car is now at Jeep dealer. We had oil changes completed as required and still had to add oil between changes. At the last garage visit they had to add 2. 5 quarts of oil. No oil light came on at any time. When car started running rough and wanted to stall we took immediately to garage. They say we need a rebuilt or new engine because of the oil consumption. We are working seniors with only one vehicle! a $3,000 bill is ridiculous especially since we found that this engine has had the same problem since 2012!.

23 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/27/2020

I need to put oil in my car at least two times in between oil changes. My car has stopped multiple times when I turn because it ran out of oil. The engine burns oil so fast. I don't drive that much. This is expensive and very very dangerous. This car needs to be recalled.

24 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/13/2020

Engine turned off rounding a corner with no warning. Was able to restart vehicle and get back home slowly. The oil was barely on the dipstick at the bottom when I checked it. I had to add 3 quarts of oil to get it back to the normal level. This occurred approximately 2600 miles after an oil change. On average, this vehicle requires the addition of approximately 1 quart of oil every 900 miles. Extremely high oil consumption. No signs of a leak anywhere in my garage or on the vehicle. Have not had any other problems with the vehicle other than having to add a quart of oil every 2nd-3rd fill up at gas station.

25 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/10/2020

Engine burns to much oil. Oil light does not come on until almost completely out of oil. Car stops suddenly and will not accelerate. An error message will pop up telling you to put your car in park and you'll have to try to start it a couple times and it will turn over before start.

26 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/17/2020

Jeep stalls every a couple of weeks. Determined that the Jeep burns oil and with no indication the car will just stall with no warning at all. When it stalls I determined that the oil level is extremely low. This happens with less than 4000 miles. I see a lot of complaints on line about this. Very scaring when it just stalls when you are driving. No way should a vehicle burn that much oil with only driving 5000 miles or less.

27 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/08/2020

For over a month now ive received"service shifter" message. Car shakes badly and loses power as if its going to shut off. Three different times it did shut off and struggled to re-crank! service shifter message goes away after turning the Jeep off & back on. Very unsafe when driving on the highway (or anywhere)!!! purchased brand new and is up to date on oil changes, etc. Jeep also burns more oil than it should.

29 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/26/2020

The vehicle consumes all of the oil (bone dry) before the vehicle reaches 3000 miles and before the next scheduled service. This has happened two times. There is absolutely no signs of a leak. The vehicle stalls out and turns off while driving on the road with no warning (no check engine light or any other warning). This time it happened on 05/26/2020 on a highway with a 60mph speed limit. This is a huge safety concern. This problem is found all through out internet forums for the 2017 Jeep Cherokee and Jeep has failed to put out a recall. The issue is known and they are intentionally putting thousands and thousands of people at risk of severe injury or death. The dealerships are calling it an, "over consumption of oil. ".

30 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/26/2020

My Jeep has about 26,000 miles on it, since ive purchased this vehicle brand new off the lot, it has been towed 6 times for engine failure. My engine is burning the oil, with out warning while driving, the car shuts off. The dealer insists this is normal, but it is not normal for a car to absorb or burn oil.

31 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/01/2020

My car has cut off twice. Took car to firestone they couldn't figure out what was wrong. Had an oil change since I was there. Called a chrylser dealer while waiting just to find out other people with my car have had the same issue with an oil consumption issue. Car cutting off. Then able to restart. 32 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/17/2020

I have owned my 2016 cherokke since Jan 2020 in April it began to run funny thats when I discovered the vehicle suffering from excessive oil consumption. I have been to multiple dealerships doing oil consumption test just to be told I went over the mileage a new test has to be started. Now here I am with the same issue just the run around. I also have a trans that clunks and bangs into gear. Sometimes it will hang before shifting or gear hunt and try to shift into two gears at once. I told the dealer this to be told that was normal or that my brakes were the problem. It still hasnt been resolved im stuck paying on this junk I owe more than its worth so I cant get rid of it. I just want Jeep to take accountablity and fix it or replace it. All of these issues happend in city driving on busy roads and interstates as well as country areas with traffic.

33 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/07/2020

Excessive engine oil consumption. No leaks but have to add engine oil every 1,000 - 2,000 miles. The car is brand new less than 10,000 miles on it. It should not be using engine oil. Have had cars before that never used oil. This car shouldn't be going through this much oil this fast. I had to top off the engine oil twice and it's got less than 2,500 miles on it.

34 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/03/2020

Car shuts off randomly while driving! loose power steering and power breaks. After looking online, this seems to be a common occurrence. Car stopped in the middle of an intersection! dealership explanation is that the oil is low and car is designed to shut off while driving if the oil is low. I just had an oil change and no oil light ever came on. Many people reporting the same and that this engine burns a whole quart of oil per 750 miles!!!.

35 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

Bought Jeep had it for approx. 7 months (October 2019) and it would shift really hard, then one day driving from home to store, the Jeep just stalled on street, turned off engine, restarted and drove to destination. I brought my Jeep in 4x before they had replaced a whole new engine due to it burning oil. Roughly 3 months later (January), Jeep was in driveway, drove to work and twice the same day slammed into gears, took it back to Jeep, they said gears needed to be reset. It seems when I use 4x4 to snow, its fine, when I turn it off a couple days later it slams into gears. Yesterday (March 2020) vehicle was parked in driveway, reversed to leave and lights came on dash for shifter needs repair, turned off engine, restarted, resumed driving and lights were off. Parked Jeep in drive way, next morning reversed and drove to work, reversed into space and lights came on again that shifter needed maint repair. I have now 53,000 miles. I take Jeep in again to be looked at for shifter. I have taken this vehicle in at least 11 times so far for engine, gears slamming, shift saying needs maint repair. Since June 2019.
