2 Engine problem of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

I am the owner of a 2000 Jeep Cherokee classic with a 4. L 6cylinder engine. I am the second owner of this Jeep with 102,000 miles. All services always done on time, oil, brakes, flushes, fluids, ect. My oil pressure dropped one day while driving and my antifreeze started disappearing. I went to have the car looked at by a repair shop they told me the cylinder head between the 3rd and the 4th cylinder had a crack in it. I was also told it is a known problem by Jeep and it was due to defective machines that made the cylinder heads. I looked online and found over 10,234 blogs about this problem. So I went to a Jeep dealer thinking it should be a recall or defective part recall and Jeep is saying there is nothing they can do about it it will cost me 3200. 00 dollars. I feel this many defective parts all with ( exact )same problem should be a major concern.

3 Engine problem of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/31/2006

On December 17th of 2003, I brought my 200 Jeep Cherokee in for service at a local auto shop. He discovered through a diagnostic check that the engine was skipping on # 3 and # 5 cylinder. They replaced the engine coil pack and spark plugs. The vehicle at that time had 89,941 miles on it. On January 31st of 2006, that same Jeep was brought to the shop again with a skip in the engine. It was also determined through a diagnostic machine that the same problem was occurring. This time the engine had 126,350 miles on it. That is less than 40k miles in 25 months. I am not sure what the warranty is on this unit, but it would be greatly appreciated if someone could look into this manner. I have spent almost $600 in 2 years for the same problem. There must be some sort of an issue. Please let me know.

4 Engine problem of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/25/2005

Bought car used w/49,000mi. As soon as I got it on the road, I noticed the "check gauges" light illuminated at a warm idle, only to find my oil pressure guage pegged at 0 psi. Did research on the web and apparently the "0331 cast" breed of cylinder heads that DC used in 2000-2001 xj's are noted for cracking after an overheat. Sure enough the vehicle had a crack in the cylinder head, which caused coolant to mix into the engine oil. Consequently, my main, rod and camshaft bearings, as well as the cylinder head itself had to be replaced. Long story short, there are several complaints out there exactly like this one, do research before you buy any Cherokee from this era using the 0331 heads. Unfortunately, DC never stepped up to the plate and offered a recall. Caveat emptor!.

15 Engine problem of the 1996 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/13/2000

The shearing of the right engine mount to engine bolts could have allowed the engine to drop down onto the steering mechanism thereby causing loss of control. Due the the engine droppping down on the right side, the rear transmision mount was torn from the cross member and the transmission shifted right which could have caused a drive shaft disconnection. I don't know if the engine shift could have impacted the throttle linkage. This shearing of the 3 mounting bolts was not caused by normal wear and tear as the bolts failed simultaneously. It is possible that the bolts were not sufficiently hardened, or possibly over tightened at assembly causing premature failure. The vehicle was essentially disabled and the only thing keeping the engine in place was the distributor landing on the chasis mount hanger.

This is a very dangerious condition & it should be addressed this way. Chrysler is refusing to pay for this repair saying it is not covered under the extended warranty.
