1 Ignition Module problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/25/2016

Vehicle had run unattended in enclosed garage. Vehicle consumed all fuel in gas tank (about 14 gallons) resulting in excessive heat build up in garage that items in garage melted. Parts on the vehicle melted. The battery was ruined from excessive heat, the fuel pump, inside the fuel tank, melted. The fuel tank became distorted. Plastic was found in the valve train and is believed to have been sourced from the melted fuel pump. Interior was damaged and flat spots on the tires were created due to excessive heat. Vehicle was stationary and in park. This Jeep is equipped with a keyless ignition and engine stop / start function that shuts engine off when braking to a complete stop and then restarts engine when brake is released. Either the vehicle started on it's own, or vehicle was not shutoff prior to driver exiting. Jeep does not provide any audible alert to the driver that the vehicle is running after the key fob has left the vehicle or fob is out of range. It is also a concern that the vehicle control modules would let the vehicle run for at least 24 hours and not shutoff. Given that remote start will shutoff after 15 minutes and the acc position is only good for 30 minutes, how can Jeep design a vehicle to idle unattended until the fuel tank emptied? vehicle was also observed to be running in a parking lot two weeks later. Witnesses parked next to the Jeep have no recollection of it running when driver left the vehicle.

2 Ignition Module problem of the 2006 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

I was driving east on the pennsylvania turnpike from pittsburgh, PA to york, PA with my wife and 1 year old daughter on the Friday of memorial day weekend. I was driving between 70-75 mph in the left hand lane when I noticed I had lost acceleration, power steering, and all of my interior lights had turned off. The entire vehilce had shut off. This easily could have caused a horrific accident as there was a ton of traffic behind me and on the road. Fortunately, I was going down a hill and I was able to maintain speed for enough time to safely drift my car into the right lane and eventually over to the side of the road. Once pulled over, I had difficulty shifting my vehicle into park and turning off the ignition. After a few minutes of attempting to shut it off, I was able to get the key out of the ignition. I waitied about 5 or so minutes and was able to start the vehicle without a problem. I stayed in the right hand lane the rest of the trip and eventually made it to my destination safely. When I got home, I took the vehicle to three rivers Chrysler Jeep and Dodge in pittsburgh, PA. . I was told I needed to replace the ignition switch and the "wire control module". With all of the recalls in the news regarding Chrysler and gm ignition switches, I would not be surprised if this was a defect in Jeep as well. The experience I had was very frightening and I hope others do not have the same problems.

5 Ignition Module problem of the 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/30/2001

The vehicle with 10529 miles lost all power during highway driving at about 55 mph. The engine warning light came on. After about 15 minutes, I started the car and drove about one half mile before it lost all power again and the warning light came on again. The car was towed. After considerable time in the dealer's shop during which the problems were apparently difficult enough to warrant consultation with the manufacturer, the drive oil pump, the main computer (module powertra. ), camshaft sensor, and crankshaft sensor were replaced. At 10747 miles, the engine warning light came on again. The car was again towed to the garage although it had been running for about 3/4 mile after the light came on. The diagnosis was that the #4 cylinder was misfiring. The synchronization was reset without any parts replacement.

11 Ignition Module problem of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee

Engine check engine lite came on at around 600 miles, was knocked off by the service manager. Went on again at 934 miles and spark plugs were replaced. Went on again and was flashing. Service dept. Can not seem to pin point problem. A idle part is being ordered. They seem to think it is idling to slow. I am afraid more problems will be caused by this hit and miss method. Is it a problem to have the lite keep coming on?.
