Jeep Compass owners have reported 61 problems related to front suspension control arm (under the suspension category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
On 11/23/20 I was at quirk Chrysler Jeep dealer getting an oil change and I was informed that both front lower control arms needed to be replaced the vehicle has only 33,906 miles. 2018 Jeep Compass vehicles were recalled for this same issue. This is a safety issue to have these parts fail prematurely.

My 2017 Jeep Compass has been having difficulty with steering/pulling. The left lower control arm and ball joint were found to be excessively loose/worn at 43,000 miles. The ball joint was previous replaced prior to 24,000 miles. This part has now been recalled on 2018 models but not 2017. The need for two such replacements on a car with 43,000 miles is terrifying and needs to be investigated.
Front kframe/subframe cross member rusted into. Front of lf lower control arm pulled out of subrame because subframe was rusted into at that spot. Also back seem from left side all the way to right side has about a 1 inch seam/tear from rust.

Inspection after clunking from the front of the vehicle revealed severe rot and corrosion of the subframe with the mounting for the anti-roll bar completed broken away from the subframe. Also severe corrosion around the lower control arm mounting appeared to be close to the failure point. Took the vehicle to the Jeep dealer who stated that the 10 year extended warranty had expired and that I should not drive the vehicle due to safety concerns. Found fca internal warranty document id-14-02 for the subframe corrosion issue dated 5/19/14 which refers to fca service bulletin 23-012-14 and states that all dealer personnel are to be made aware of this bulletin. I have a receipt for other repairs from an fca dealer dated 7/28/14, 2 months after the warranty bulletin date and there was no notification given about the inspection mandated under the warranty and nothing noted on the receipt. Thus there was no way for me to know about this waranty and safety issue which I am now told has expired for my vehicle. Per dealer instruction, I called fca customer care and was also told the warranty for my vehicle had expired and my only choice was to pay for repairs myself. In scrolling through the complaints already noted in the NHTSA site, I see numerous mentions of this problem with many indicating complete subframe and suspension failure with injury only being prevented by the slow operating speed at the time of the failure. This problem is a manufacturing defect where improper materials and/or coatings were used by fca on these components. For reference my 1998 Dodge neon has no such problem after 21 years as it used galvanized coating on this critical component. Fca needs to issue a recall and pay all associated costs for this safety related issue and be liable for any injuries resulting from these failures.

A year ago the passenger side lower control arm stabilizer link was bad and there was a recall on it so I got it replaced is fine a year later I have to have it replaced again because it's making all kinds of noise.
While driving the left (front driver side) lower control arm fell free from the steering knuckle which attaches it to the wheel, causing significant reduction in the ability to steer and eventually the lower control arm (moving lose under the car), became lodged between the wheel rim and the brake assembly causing the the left front tire to shift forward into the front fender / bumper and become immobile. Luckily the vehicle made it home and it was in parking the vehicle that the lower control arm became wedged between the tire inner rim and brake assembly, so no crash or injury occurred, but it could have been very serious.
Tl- the contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while accelerating up to 60 mph, there was a rattling noise detected from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the rear control arms needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic for a diagnostic test or repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 187,000. Dr.
While driving the driver side rear wheel suddenly tilted inward so when was rubbing wheel well. Got vehicle home less than 1 mile away and saw cross member rusted completely allowing upper control arm to move.
Chrysler issued a recall for my vehicle in June: safety recall l27 / NHTSA 12v-085 rear suspension lower control arms. It is now September and I've tried to have it fixed by 3 different Jeep dealerships. None of them have the part, they all ordered the part, they all have not received the part. Chrysler's number for the recall is u42. Dealerships in south florida contacted: joey accardi, arrigo, and, worst of them all, schumacher. I am driving an extremely unsafe vehicle because the part is not available?? ridiculous. But no one seems to care much about it. How can a manufacturer issue a recall and not have the responsibility to have the parts available to fix the issue? I have cut back my driving, in fear, but I have to use the car sometimes. It's been over 2 months now and no hope is in sight. I call every week to check if the part has arrived. Arrigo is the one I am concentrating on, as they at least knew about the recall and were willing to order the part. What good is being advised of a recall when you can't do anything about it??.

"takata recall" every time I have to drive my 2007 Jeep Compass I am scared for my safety and the safety of my children. I have had the whole control arm and tie rods replaced in my Jeep just a few months ago due to very loud squeeking in the rear end of the vehicle, it makes the sound when driving slow or fast, any tiny movement such as getting in and out of the vehicle while not running makes the loudest squeaking sound! its like nails on a chalkboard! I already have to take it back in due to the same sound the fix lasted about 2 weeks! there is something majorly wrong with this make and model!.
In the last four years, I have had to replace the control arms on both the driver side and the passenger side, I just found out that both are need of replacement again and it the cost is out of this world. Jeep needs to take care of this. I understand I am not the only one with this issue.
I have had this Jeep for little over a year and have had to replace the fuel pump, the drive chain, front control arms and now I am told that the subframe is rusted and apparently cracked as it makes awfully load noises in the back. I have contacted a Jeep dealer to ck on the replacement of the subframe. I agree, do not buy a Jeep.
While driving the car started pulling to the left and right. Pulled the wheel to check tie rod ends, cv shaft, control arm and found that the k-frame had rusted so bad that the control arm was loose.
Front sub frame that holds control arms rotted right out could lose front tire.
The ball joint on the Jeep has had to be replaced 2 times on the left. One time at 42,000 miles. The second time at 85,000 miles. Also the right sided ball joint and control arm had to be replaced. Failure of these components can lead to the wheel coming off and wrecks. Information on the internet and the mechanics I have spoken with say they have never seen these parts wear out as frequently as they are in this Compass and there should be a recall.

I was driving to work Dec 23 morning and rear sub frame broke away from control arm sending me in the ditch. . Lucky it was 25 mph. Had local Chrysler dealer look at it and because it was. Made it canada they won't fix it under the extended warrnty. . I just got this in June, and still owe 6500 on it. . Chrysler needed to step up. . What does it matter were the Jeep was made. Your parts were the problem so fix it. . I could have died because of frame rot. . Never had a issue in my 95 blazer!!.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass 4x4. While having routine maintenance performed on the vehicle, the contact was informed that the driver side lower control arm, shocks, and struts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,276.
I purchased my car new in 2007 with 98 miles on it. In 2011, with nearly 40,000 miles, both my front control arms needed replaced. I have since needed them (along with the tires) replaced at least 5 times. Granted, I now have over 140k miles on my car, but this is not something that should happen on a regular basis. I've had at least 3 mechanics tell me they have had numerous repairs made on other Compass vehicles and to "hold on to my receipts" if there is a recall.
When filled up with fuel, car stalls out and cuts off. I have replaced all of the bearings and car still makes a roaring noise with the axle. Upper control arms are completely damaged. Battery light continues to come on and headlight was replaced but does not stay on. Light stays on indicating vacuum hose issue. 4 wheel drive light stays on.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass 4x4. While driving at various speeds, the contact heard a clunking noise followed by the sound of metal scraping the road. The vehicle was pulled over and the contact noticed that the rear control arm and cross member failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.
Front engine cradle/sub frame broke in half while driving on a city street causing loss of control and damage to additional parts including rack and pinion, control arms, etc. After examination of the engine cradle/sub frame by a mechanic and myself it was discovered that the engine cradle/sub frame had rusted so severely that broke in half under the normal weight and driving stresses of the vehicle. Examination of the rear sub frame shows the same signs of rust which include numerous holes approximately 1/2" +/- in diameter. The uni-body of the vehicle has no surface rust or more severe rust located on any area on the vehicle. The rust is solely isolated on the front engine cradle/sub frame and rear sub frame. This is a very dangerous and premature failure of a vehicle.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Compass. While pulling out of a parking lot, the contact heard a loud noise near the front driver side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician noticed that underneath the vehicle, the subframe, control arm, and crossmember bar were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. In addition, the fuel filter was corroded and not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.
I started having problems in 09/11/2015 with my rear right control arm the rubber bushing gave out and the control arm was squeaking very loudly, I complained to the dealer and they gave me a goodwill service charge of $100 but after I asked if the control arm on the left also went bad would they also honor the goodwill they told me that it would be my problem. The left side of the rear control bushing has gone bad in Feb of 2016 now I have to fix this thing. I know that if it fails completely I could have a control problem. Would you please look into this. I have called Chrysler Jeep and all they said that it is not a recall but I know that other Jeeps are have this same problem. Would you please intervene in this potentially dangerous problem, the happens when the vehicle is moving. Thanks for your time ken pirone.

I bought this car in 2008, it is a 2007 Jeep ( 2014 or around). We had tires wearing out, and took it in for alignment and spent around $200 to fix tie rods and alignment. About a year later went in for oil change to dealer and they said my arm control in front of car ( 2) needed replacement. I get from reading on line and just that they knew that this was a possible problem, that this was a common thing. Since it is a safety issue, I am writing this to try and get this as a recall, I paid the almost $1. 000 to fix ( my daughter, we share car) but could you look into this and see if it is occurring more then normal ( odds are it is) and what the weakness is in the control arms, and because it can so affect ones ability to control car, has to be put on a recall. Pam holloway.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass. While driving 35 mph and making a right turn, the ball joint axle detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the ball joint axle and the control arm needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
Premature failure (46700 miles) of both left and right lower control arms found during annual state inspection. Replaced both lower control arms.
39000 miles and so many suspention problems control arms, ball joints, tie rods, struts hoping my family doesn't die in this vehicle what I see in the news about Chrysler lately scares the hell out of me trying to keep this vehicle off freeway don't know where to turn Chrysler says there is no problem but going on line there are so many others having the same experience with their Jeeps I don't believe what they say they tell me it's 4000 mi over warranty nothing can be done I'm afraid the wheels will fall off what the $#%^ can I do I don't have the l money to buy a new car or keep fixing this one I think it's a faulty design and so do numerous mechanics in the USA and canada something's messed up when parts prematurely go bad and if you look into it I'm sure you will see a pattern I babied this car since new hoping it would last twenty years don't know if any one has died but I think to myself its probable being so many complaints I have read any kind of help available this is my forth Jeep and I never have seen anything like this with the ten or so cars I have owned hope you can help! before something bad happens where can I turn driving this is frightening and I couldn't sell this to another family after what my mechanic has told me about these kind of Jeeps please help! what would you do what should I do thanks.
My vehicle, has a rough ride, traction light flashes often. I had several repairs done on my front in June 2014, (upper, lower control arms, left and right sides, rotors ,brakes and tires are always needed). On February 2,2015 my left front ball joints and control arms broke and my wheel broke off, I am currently in need of more control arm and strut repair on my right side again! my vehicle clumps and has a rough ride, I am in constant fear driving this vehicle, because of the constant issues with my front end, even after its repaired.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while having the vehicle inspected, it was advised that the lower passenger side ball joint and control arm needed to be replaced. In addition, the independent mechanic diagnosed that the front end suspension needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact previously had the right control arm repaired under a manufacturer recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 42,000. Djr.
My 2007 Jeep Compass had been making clunking and squeaking noises when driving over small bumps at low speeds. There was also a loud grinding noise when turning the steering wheel to either side, also happening at low speeds. I took my vehicle to a mechanic who stated I needed to replace both lower control arms and ball joint assemblies and both outer tie rods ends. It was also stated I needed a new right strut. I was advised that my vehicle was not safe to drive and I was made to sign a paper stating they had told me this. At less than 42,000 miles these are parts that should not be malfunctioning and even more importantly not endangering my life.
The vehicle was bought brand new in 2010. Went to the dealership to get one of the tires replaced. The automotive mechanics found multiple problems in the control arm and the ball joint of the wheel. The mechanic told me that the problem is very common to Jeep Compass. I just want to file a complaint because the problem is not suppose to occur unless the vehicle is driven all the time or always driven to very far destinations. In this case, it is not. I understand that this type of problem might be cause by something else, like bumps on the road, or a heavy object hit on the road. I do not recall any incidents with my Jeep Compass that could cause this problem. The vehicle was brand new and not suppose to have that kind of problem that could potentially harm my family and myself.
I had replace this part for the second time now in less than 2 years. Auto tech said this should not wear like this for the mileage of this vehicle which is 67400. Currently the Jeep liberty has a recall for this defect but the Compass does not. This is of great concern to me as this part plays a vital role for maintaining control of vehicle. Both right and left control arms done on October 25 2012. Recent replacement on March 27, 2014 drivers side control arm done.
My Jeep Compass is only 4 years old and the lower control arms and the tie rods need replaced. So far it has cost me $500. 00 and I am not done yet. With a name like Jeep I would think it would be a better built vehicle. I can see this happening after 10 years with some off roading. To me this is not normal wear and tear and I would think unacceptable for an american made vehicle.
