1 Air Bag problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/05/2026

While driving my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4x2, the driver side active head restraint deployed without any collision, rear impact, crash, or other triggering event. There was a sudden loud bang directly behind my head, which startled me and created an immediate safety distraction while the vehicle was in motion. I did not know what had happened at the time. The head restraint remains deployed/open and cannot be reset. The vehicle was not involved in a crash, there was no rear impact, and there was no airbag deployment. Fca/stellantis has issued an x88 active head restraint warranty extension for certain Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles involving inadvertent deployment of the front active head restraint where it cannot be reset due to internal damage. My vehicle appears to have experienced the same failure mode, but Jeep/stellantis has advised that my VIN does not qualify for x88 coverage, apparently because the vehicle was built after the selected warranty extension population. My vehicle build date is January 2018, with mdh 011623. I am filing this complaint because this was a safety related head restraint failure that occurred while driving without a collision. The sudden deployment caused a loud impact immediately behind my head and created a dangerous distraction. I am concerned that vehicles outside the current x88 warranty population may still be experiencing the same inadvertent active head restraint failure. The vehicle was factory ordered and delivered in February 2018, which may explain the later January 2018 build date, but it is still a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee and appears to have experienced the same inadvertent active head restraint failure mode described in fca’s x88 warranty extension.

2 Air Bag problem of the 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/02/2026

I was driving at approximately 30 - 35mph when another car went through a stop sign causing a head on collision. I did not see the other car, therefore had no time to brake or maneuver away - the collision happened at the full speed I was driving. The damage to the car is directly in the center and towards the right side of the front of vehicle where the airbag sensors are located. The airbags did not deploy. I was restrained by my seatbelt.

3 Air Bag problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/25/2026

While driving, the drivers side head rest exploded and pushed my body/neck forward. There was no accident that prompted this and was slowing down to a stop light.

4 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/10/2026

Car parked in driveway, passenger active head restraint deployed overnight while parked. Plastic mold holding the latch pin in place is destroyed. Broke into pieces. The latch pin in pic1. Jpg is still secured in the lock position. The computer is not throwing codes of deployed headrest, the computer thinks everything is fine. Pic3. Jpg has a picture of the driver headrest, not deployed. The headrest are designed to deploy only with impact. The plastic molding broke away from the latch pin, and allowed the headrest to deploy prematurely. This should have been a safety recall on the first report. Thousands of complaints have been noted thus far.

5 Air Bag problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/03/2026

The active head restraint on my driver seat deployed and pushed my head forward suddenly. I could not push my head back into position. This happened while driving on the evening of may 3. I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo. I was not able to reset the head rest position. I took the vehicle to the dealership. They said that the whole headrest needed to be replaced. It could not be reset because the molded plastic piece was degraded. From a search online this appears to be common in the 2014-2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee with active head restraints. Even though this is a failure of the equipment, and other Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2014 -2018 received a 10-year extension on their head restraints, the dealership and Jeep customer care said that my vehicle is not covered. Nor will they let me buy a seat from them that does not use the active head restraint. They said that because my vehicle's VIN specifies a vehicle with active head restraints, they cannot sell me otherwise. I will not be comfortable driving this vehicle again with an active head restraint that could randomly fail and punch my head forward while I am in rush hour traffic. I believe this is a safety risk as it is disorienting to not know why your head is suddenly pushed down and forward while you are driving at 45 mph. Distracting the driver in such a way endangers the driver, passengers, and other vehicles' occupants on the same roadway. It throws off your view of the roadway and your mirrors. There were no warnings ahead of time.

6 Air Bag problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/01/2026

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while his wife was driving the vehicle at an undisclosed speed, the driver side air bag suddenly deployed hitting the drivers head, the vehicle was not involved in a collison at all. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,830.

7 Air Bag problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/01/2026

While driving my Jeep Grand Cherokee, the front passenger headrest suddenly deployed forward with a loud popping/exploding sound. There was no collision, no impact, and no warning before it happened. Fortunately, no one was sitting in the passenger seat at the time. If a passenger had been seated there, the headrest could have struck them in the back of the head or neck and potentially caused serious injury. This appears to be a dangerous safety defect involving the active head restraint system. Based on information I found from other Jeep Grand Cherokee owners reporting similar failures, the issue may involve a faulty plastic bracket or internal component in the active head restraint that can fail under pressure and cause the headrest to deploy unexpectedly. Other owners have reported injuries such as head, neck, and concussion-type injuries from similar incidents. I am concerned that this failure happened during normal driving conditions and without any crash or trigger event. This creates a serious risk to vehicle occupants and could also startle the driver, potentially causing a crash. I am requesting that NHTSA review this issue and determine whether my vehicle is affected by an existing recall or whether additional investigation or recall action is needed.

14 Air Bag problem of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/08/2026

Front passenger head restraint deployed without any accident or reason. Just deployed without cause snapping a plastic bracket so it can’t be manually pushed back into place you have to purchase the entire component. The other oddity is the piece that you need to replace in question has been discontinued. Stellantis has a recall referenced as (20c) but my particular vehicle doesn’t fit in there timeline for that recall. I have a child and it is a head restraint that deployed is an airbag, which is extremely dangerous for anybody that could’ve been sitting in that spot or behind the seat. The piece itself is 700$ there is no wholesale for this particular piece so you’re looking at any place that would charge you $700 and then whatever the service or labor fee is which is minimal so we’re talking at least $800 for a piece that has to be with or compatible with a certain part number which is discontinued or it will not work with the system.

15 Air Bag problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/04/2026

On March 4th 2026 I called liberty Jeep here in hinesville georgia concerning about the recall for my airbags as well as for the hitch on this vehicle. To date nobody has bothered to call to give me an appointment concerning this major recall and continue to refuse to provide any kind of service for me on this recall I have contacted Jeep headquarters about just concerned dealing with liberty Jeep in hinesville and today they haven't bothered to do anything about this they are continuously endangering me my daughter and my wife by avoiding any opportunity to repair this damage to my airbags.

16 Air Bag problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/24/2026

I hit a deer at 65 mph, causing significant damage to my vehicle, $7,300+ to the front end. I have a safety beacon that detected the accident through my insurance, that detected the severity of the impact, resulting in an immediate call for safety to check on me. My airbags did not deploy, but there was a nasty aroma of sulfur during the impact. My minor children were secured safely in the vehicle, as well as myself. I, the driver of the car hit my head very hard on the steering wheel and window during impact, causing whiplash- neck pain, and reoccurring migraines still to this day 3-21-2026. Although I didn't receive medical attention it has been made known that I hit my head. This would've been avoided had my airbags deployed. I assume there may have been a malfunction and had this been a more serious incident, not only would my life be at stake, but most importantly my children. This is unacceptable for safety purposes.

17 Air Bag problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/12/2026

The air bag light on the dash came on . Not sure what to do.

18 Air Bag problem of the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/07/2026

Driver's steering wheel airbag malfunctioned and deployed unexpectedly while backing into a parking space. Safety of passengers through potential of bodily injury and car crash due to lack of sight and sudden explosion/deployment of airbag while car is actively being driven could have been causedby this malfunction. Various incidents of this safety issue have been reported, but no recalls have been officiated yet for this specific year and model. Vehicle has not inspected yet, it just occurred this morning. Insurance was notified, but said it needed to be inspected by a mechanic or dealership. Airbag light came on today for the first time while driving home and then airbag malfunctioned/deployed while parking.

19 Air Bag problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/18/2026

Driver side headrest airbag yes vehicle is available for inspection. No accident yes injury the driver side headrest airbag deployed while driving without an accident happening. I suffered whiplash and headaches after the incident that happened on January 18th, 2026. The headrest airbag deploying could have caused an accident but lucky for me I was able to pull my vehicle over safely. There is a possibility of going to the doctors if neck pain and headaches continue. I will be taking it to the dealership on Tuesday January 20th, 2026 to find out what caused the airbag to deploy. It has not been inspected yet but will be tomorrow January 20th, 2026. No warning lights came on before or during the airbag deploying.

21 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/05/2026

My son was hit head on in a very serious accident and his airbag on driver side didn’t fully deploy resulting in injuries. I’m not sure what component was faulty but the airbag should have fully deployed.

22 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/18/2025

My airbags did not deploy and I believe my seatbelt also did not work properly. I was struck head on (front end to front end) inside a tunnel by a pickup truck (ram 3500) going appx. 40mph and my air bags did not deploy and my head hit my windshield so I’m unsure if seatbelts worked properly as I was using mine. My insurance company is storing it now for me as it is most likely totaled. My insurance is handling my property damage case, as far as I know it has not been to any dealer/mechanic and again is most likely beyond repair unfortunately. Colorado state patrol inspected both vehicles involved, I know my insurance is holding the vehicle now, I’m not sure about the other driver as I am struggling to find help with litigation. I had no warning from my car nor otherr driver, not sure if this is because I was entering the single lane tunnel. He did not use horn flash light anything like that, I laid on my horn and cut my wheel right but being in a tunnel with a wall of rock/mountain, there’s was no avoiding him.

27 Air Bag problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/24/2025

This 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee was hit in the left front by a vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign. It also spun and was impacted on the left rear as well. All airbags but the driver’s side curtain airbag deployed. The driver hit their head on the seat belt pillar on the driver’s side. I have contacted Jeep but they have not responded to me in over a week. Injury to the driver’s head would have been less traumatic if this airbag had deployed.

28 Air Bag problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/22/2025

My acc/fcw light is on, I have not been in a crash. And while driving after this light came on my passenger headrest airbag broke apart. And my cruise control is out, along with traction control. My car just went haywire.

29 Air Bag problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/15/2025

I scheduled a recall appointment for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. The dealer confirmed that the appointment was scheduled and that the necessary recall part had been ordered. However, when I arrived, my vehicle was parked and no work was started. I was not given an estimated repair time, and after waiting for 3 hours, no progress had been made. This recall is mandatory, and the dealer failed to complete it. I am reporting this as a safety issue and request that the matter be investigated.

Failure Date: 09/05/2025

I was in a car accident and the airbags didn't deploy. Car was declared a total loss.

31 Air Bag problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/25/2025

While driving down the highway the passenger seat headrest airbag deployed. Causing it to hit the back of my head with no warning. There were not any lights on or anything.

32 Air Bag problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/23/2025

Last year while driving my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the headrest collision system went off for no reason, hitting me in the back of the head. Luckily I did not lose control of the vehicle and there was no collision or injury to myself. It was very scary, but I maintained control of the vehicle. I went to my local Jeep dealer pembroke pines Jeep auto nation at 13601pines blvd suite a pembroke pines, FL 33027. They told me it was a known issue and the service person made an appointment for me later that week , at which they replaced the headrest at no cost to me under a recall service bulletin issued by Jeep/stellantis. The same thing happened last week while driving, when the passenger side headrest activated for no reason, this time striking my wife in the head. I went back to the same dealership. They told me that this headrest is no longer covered under the warranty which has now expired in April of 2025. And would cost $800 to repair. They told me to call stellantis and see if they would cover the repair. I went home and called stellantis, whose customer service agent advised me that he was going to escalate my concern to his supervisor. I got a call today and they told me that my car is not covered by any warranty and that I would be responsible for the repair. My car VIN number does not fall under the recall which has expired. He also told me that stellantis is not responsible for the repair and he should ask the dealer to see if they would possibly split the cost of the repair with me. This could of been a very serious situation, had I lost control of the vehicle as a driver. I looked further online and in Jeep owners club forums and this seems to be a common problem with Jeeps and Dodge durangos, both owned by stellantis. This is a clear and dangerous safety issue!.

33 Air Bag problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2025

I was driving my car going 30-35mph when all of a sudden my driver's side headrest popped me in the back of my head as if the airbag in the headrest was deployed. I was not involved in any collision for this to occur nor was there a bump in the road that would have caused it. It startled me thinking someone was in the back of my car and hit me, but that was not the case. There were no warning signs or lights telling me to get any of my components inspected. I took it to the mopar service department for inspection, and they said it's a known issue for Jeeps, but there is no recall.

34 Air Bag problem of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/14/2025

While parked my 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, front passenger seat airbag deployed unexpectedly without any collision or impact. The deployment caused damage to the seat and could be a serious safety risk. I later learned there is a recall for similar models due to improperly secured side airbag connectors, but my VIN is not currently included. I believe my vehicle may have the same defect and request immediate inspection and repair at no cost, as this is a safety-critical failure.

35 Air Bag problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/11/2025

After a rear end hit by another car the red alert/caution light for the airbag system on the front electric dashboard was lit up. The system did not engage after being hit and after taking the car into for repair replacement parts are not available over 5 months later for the same year and model by any original source in the us as of today. Accident occurred in August 2025. Repair shop did identify the 2 failing parts, both related to parts associated with the driver side seatbelt and where it connects to the seatbelt buckle at the side of the seat. Insurance company of the person who hit us forced us to pickup the car from the repair shop despite airbag system not fixed and as of to date 01/17/2026 has not been able to repair or correct the faulty system. They have also as of to date shown willingness to total the car but instead forcing us either to drive a car with a faulty safety device or park it in our drive way and get a new car for personal use. They have also repair shop designated by the insured company inspected the safety system, identified the problem, notified the insurance company and also informed the insurance company the 2 replaced parts or not available in the us. No warning lights prior to accident regarding this airbag safety system and warranty light is currently present 01/17/2026 obviously this is a vital part(s) of the airbag safety system and if not corrected or fixed puts any driver at a elevated risk in case of an accident.
