Automatic Transmission Park/neutral Start Switch Problems of Jeep Grand Cherokee - part 2

Placed in park/exited car/car rolled and did not stop/rechecked park position & confirmed that car was in park, however car still rolled & did not stop until brakes applied. Called dealer and was told to use parking brake. Dealer did not have any other information on problem. Car to go to transmission shop to determine defect. Plan to save all repaired parts.

I parked car in a parking space; put car in park; as I was looking in my handbag I heard a crash. My car had backed up and hit a car in the next aisle. I then could not get the car out of gear or shut the car off. The manager of the store also could not get the car out of park of remove the key. The police officer was able to do this and said that my cell phone charger cord stopped the car from engaging totally in park. I plan to dispute this because I cannot recreate this.

Some thing has to be done about this problem, the vehicle almost backed it self into my neibors living room. Not to mention if a person had been in the way they could have been killed of seriously injured. This problem should be corrected as soon as possible, lives and property damage is at stake.

I pulled my Jeep cherokee into the mail center in my homeowners complex; I put the Jeep in park; opened my drivers side door; got out of the car; retreived my mailbox key from the drivers side door(where I store it); turned around and put the key into the mailbox; opened my mailbox and as I was about to take the mail out of the box I hear d a noise; I turn around and my Jeep is moving backwards; I instinctively lunge at the car; hit my head on the outer edge of the open door causing a major cut requiring sutures; then the open door and moving car pin me against a post; I manage to push my way free causing more injuries to myself; spin around the outside of the pole; manage to get into thejeep;---- it jumped out of park into reverse; the open door was crushed backwards by the pole causing the property damage and I was injured in the incident as well. Now I find out that Grand Cherokees and laredos have these reported incidents of jumping into reverse and I think these problem autos should be taken off the road; this could have been a tragic scene because this mail center is usually busy and if there was a child or someone behind my car or another auto behind me when this happened it could have been fatal; for me as well--I'm lucky I wasn;t knocked out.

While in park vehicle jumped into reverse, hitting consumer.

Vehicle went from park to rolling forward. I jumped in to brake but vehicle did not respond. Rolled forward hitting my house and kept going across lawn and hit neighbor's house. Airbags did not deploy. Cops did not report what I told them happened instead they wrote what they thought happened but the fact is that the vehicle moved when it shouldn't have, brakes didn't respond, and this shouldn't have happened. How can I put my family in this car even after they fix it?.

Vehicle was idling in park gear, and emergency brake was activated. When driver walked in front of vehicle to adjust a real-estate sign vehicle started moving forward and pinned driver between sign and vehicle. Driver was bruised from being pushed into a post, and was forced to the ground when driver's left foot was ran over by the wheels. Driver was able to chase down vehicle, moving approximately 4 to 6 mp, on a broken foot and bring vehicle to a stop. Vehicle has not been examined to determine cause of problem. Reference investigation: ea 01-017. Please provide any additional information / documentation.

While parked and engine was shut off, vehicle started rolling backwards for a distance of approximately 40 feet before driver was able to pull the emergency brake, and bring vehicle to a stop, dealership has not examined vehicle to determine the cause for this problem. Consumer stated that dealer could not find anything wrong.

After putting vehicle in park position, vehicle rolled backwards, across city street into parked vehicle.

After leaving vehicle in idle it started ot roll back and ran into traffic, hitting two other vehicles. Contacted dealer.

While vehicle was parked and was idling it shifted into reverse and started going downhill, hitting another vehicle. Contacted dealer.

While the vehicle was idling it jumped out of the park gear and started rolling backwards in reverse approximately 100 to 200 yards. Vehicle was stopped when it hit an embankment. No damage to vehicle or injury reported. Dealership is examing vehicle to determine a cause for this problem. Note: consumer reported previous incident over NHTSA webpage (odi reference number 750164). The dealership was unable to duplicate the problem.

While vehicle was in park and idling, it started rolling backwards and knocked owner to the ground, rolling over the bottom portion of her left calf muscle and causing several bruises, vehicle rolled across a section of the highway, and was stopped when it crashed into a guardrail, dealership was in possession of vehicle, but has not informed consumer as to any findings, consumer stated the problem has since occured on 2 other occasions, in which the transmission locked up, since this incident the vehiclehas been leaking when it rains on the passenger side, most likely a result of the impact.

My Jeep was in park ,engine running walked behind vehicle to store . Came out two minutes later and vehicle had moved in reverse 180 degrees. A rock stopped the Jeep from moving further .

I started my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the morning to warm up. The vehicle was in park, but the emergency brake was not on. I went back inside my house while my vehicle was warming. When I went back out to my vehicle I noticed it was no longer in my driveway. The vehicle was in my neighbors yard! I couldn't believe what had happened. When I got in the vehicle to move it out of the yard, it was in reverse. Luckily it did not have enough power to make it up the bank of the yard or it would have went through my neighbors house. No one was injured nor was there any damage to the Jeep. It jumped out of park and slipped into reverse on its own. I am 100% sure of this!! I bought the car bc I wanted something safe to haul my family around in. . . We just had our first child. Now, after this incident, I don't feel safe at all. My wife is extremely afraid of it now especially since we have a newborn. . . Nothing like making a huge car payment for something that drives itself. I did some research on the net and it appears that I am not the only person who has experienced this problem. The figures are now approaching 1000 reports of this type of incident. I like the Jeep, I wish something could be done about the problem. If nothing is done by Chrysler in the next few months I am going to sell it bc my wife won't even ride in the car anymore. . Especially with the baby. If I do sell the vehicle, I hope it does not injure or kill of the new buyer!! Chrysler has problem, they need to fix it before people start getting seriously hurt.

While vehicle was parked in parking lot put vehicle in park and vehicle rolled backwards. Consumer ran to try to stop vehicle ,it dragged consumer a distance before consumer could finally stop vehicle. Have not contacted dealer.

Consumer stated vehicle was in park with engine running, and emergency brake not applied, when vehicle suddenly went backward and hit a cement pole, and then hit vehicle. Consumer had neck surgery previously, and suffered neck injuries due to this occurrence. .

Vehicle was in park when it jumped out of gear and hit another vehicle. Both cars were totalled. Please provide any further information.

Vehicle was in park, engine running/ emergency brake not applied. Consumer got out, and at that moment vehicle suddenly went backward. Vehicle hit garage door before consumer was able to jump in and shut off engine. No injuries. Damage to vehicle about $ 4500. 00.

Pe 01 021/roll away in park: while parked and idling in driveway vehicle inadvertently jumped out of gear, rolled into reverse, and hit consumer, then struck a tree before stopping, consumer sustained minor injuries. Prior to the incident, for two days the rpm was at 3000 on the highway, the engine sounded like it never shifted into the final gear for cruising.

Vehicle was parked with engine running, park brake not applied, and suddenly vehicle went backwards, consumer was able to jump in and shut engine off.

While backing out of the drive way and then getting out of vehicle and leaving vehicle in idle, and without any notice went into reverse and ran into the neighbor's yard. Then, finally stopped when running into a tree. When looking into vehicle it was still in park and trying to reverse. Contacted dealer, and dealer claimed that they never heard of the problem.

Vehicle was backed into a parkinspace next to a utility box protected by 4 cement pillars. The vehicle was in park, the drivers door was opened placing the door between 2 of the 4 pillars and the driver was standing outside of the open door. The vehicle lurched backwards forcing the door into one of the pillars and causing the driver to move out of the way. The driver jumped back into the vehicle and put the brakes on then returned the vehicle to park and applied the emergency brake. The driver exited the vehicle and made sure none of the passengers or bystanders were injured, surveyed the damage and calmed his nerves. No other incidents have happened since.

While vehicle was idling in the park gear, it started rolling in reverse. Consumer was knocked down, and the vehicle rolled over her legs when she attempted to open door and stop movement. Vehicle moved at an unknown distance, and struck a mailbox before being stopped by a neighbor. Dealer has not examined vehicle for this problem. Please provide any additional information / documentation.

The car was idling in park and it suddenly slipped into reverse. The driver had been out of the car for about 15 seconds when the vehicle apparently slid into either reverse or neutral. Fortunately, the driver chased the car down, jumped into the car and was able to maneuver the car away from students who were walking nearby. Otherwise there could have been a catastrohpe.

Vehicle was started up with motor running, then door was opened, and consumer was standing on outside while vehicle rolled in reverse, consumers vheicle hit 2 other vehicles in its pathway. Consumer stated vehicle was put into park.

Jeep jumped out of park into reverse while driver was exiting the vehicle resulting in an accident that caused massive head trauma requiring surgery and rehabilitation.

The car was unatended, running, in park when the transmision slipped into reverse and rolled down the road hitting a house.
