1 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/23/2018

Jeep was having brake problems. Replaced all the brakes this spring and still having a problem. Took the Jeep in to the dealer in June to have the brake booster looked at, said it was fine. Since then the brakes have been getting worse. Today I crashed into the front of my house. There is something wrong with the brake booster, like I told Jeep back in June. This same thing is happening on many other Jeeps. Please something has to be done. The dealership is saying they looked at the "splash sheild" under the recall and since nothing was wrong they are not responsible for anything else on the booster. Please read other Jeep owners having the same problem. Https://jeepgarage. Org/f73/more-brake-booster-intrigue-186178. Html#/topics/186178?page=3. I took the master cylinder off and there is a bunch of rust inside the booster. It's a closed system, debris shouldn't be building up or rust shouldn't be getting in there. Maybe this was caused from the splash shield and water got inside?.

2 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/23/2016

The brake booster stopped working while I was driving with my family going 55mph coming to a complete stop. Come to find out there was a recall for the break booster (p14) indicating that corrosion may occur and water could be ingested. Chrysler put a shield (band aid) to prevent corrosion. This recall was performed and marked complete on my vehicle. One year and 7 months later my brake booster fails and the ever so helpful and friendly(that was sarcasm because they were horrible) associates at my local Chrysler dealership did a diagnosis, determining that corrosion was not cause of my break booster failing. So now I have my personal mechanic replace the part. The part ordeed did not fit. Also, the master cylinder is leaking. So now I need both parts, which will cost me in the upper area of $290, nor including tax. This is an obvious issue with the brake booster part. The whole part is deffective for the make, modle and year. Chrysler is simply needs to replace the whole part. Not put a shield(band aid) it hoping it will hold. I am not the only customer out there who is experiencing this same issue.

3 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/27/2016

During normal driving down a mountain road, break pedal went to the floor. Attempts make to pump break with no effect. Emergency brake was pulled with no effect. Vehicle slammed into rock wall and then landed into a 10+ foot ravine. Was informed by mechanic the master cylinder failed which caused a near fatal accident with 5 people in the vehicle. I recently found out there was a recall on a replacement master cylinder for that make a model but cannot verify if this was a replacement part or not. I cannot not find any information with casting numbers of effected parts. The recalled master cylinders it reports the part was affected in cold weather but this happened on a warm summer day. The recall I am referring to was initially reported in 2006. All that happened and the airbags did not deploy. I do have pictures of the accident and the master cylinder as well as documentation re the accident reports, I am having a hard time uploading them.

4 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/06/2016

I have a 2014 overland Jeep. It has 15000 miles on it. It's 2 yrs old. I paid $50,000 for it. I purchased the high end life time warranty. The rear brakes are totally not working and the front are very soft. I have taken it to a dealer and he checked the unit out at first he said the power booster was bad then after talking to Jeep they changed their story. He claims the rotors and pads are shot! I am pretty good at working on cars and trucks. I know for a fact the rotors and pads are not gone! I have had a few garages look at it and they said the same. Something is stopping the brake pressure on the rear brakes and only working partially on the front. I ask about recall p14 and n58. They said nothing! that is the loss of pressure from master cylinder from moisture. At present time I am afraid to drive the unit because I have already missed 2 stop lights because of poor braking ability I was only doing 50 on a 4 lane divided highway and could not bring it to a full stop before the light. This needs to be checked out.

5 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/17/2016

The vehicle went in for 4 recalls that I was never notified of, other than a flier from autonation saying I have 4 open recalls. I contacted and schedule this immediately upon receipt. They were looking at the brake booster recall and found the master cylinder to be shot. I've driven lots of cars for over a million miles and never had a master cylinder go before. This is alarming that at 45k miles this is shot. This part must be defective. In addition, this appears to be a common occurence with 193 such complaints on carcomplaints. Com. I've talked to fiat Chrysler and they are refusing to assist with this. I am certain they are correct in identifying the issue as I have noticed some break deterioration recently. Just because there wasn't an accident installing faulty brake master cylinders on vehicles is a highly dangerous proposition.

6 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/19/2015

The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving at 55 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but it took a greater amount of time to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was aware of NHTSA campaign number: 06e022000 (service brakes, hydraulic), but the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 95,000.

7 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/05/2014

I took my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee into the dealership to have two recalls addressed, both regarding the brakes, I believe. Upon working on the vehicle, the master cylinder "fell apart," accordion to the service advisor. The master cylinder is on nationwide backorder, and I will be in a rental until "mid-November 2014. " really? this is unacceptable. How does a master cylinder "fall apart"?.

8 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

I was driving approx 30mph on a surface street and attempted to brake as a moved into a left turn lane. The brakes did not respond to touch and my foot nearly went to the floor. The Jeep decelerated to almost a stop until I briefly reaccelerated to approx 5mph (because I was stunned and thought there was no way that the brakes had failed on a brand new vehicle) and attempted to brake again but my foot nearly went to the floor again without a brake response. The power brakes were definitely not working, and the braking power with my foot nearly to the floor was incredibly unresponsive. I coasted into a parking lot, hit the roadside assistance button in my Jeep, and the vehicle was towed to the nearest dealership for repair. Even the tow driver noted how unresponsive the brakes were as he loaded the vehicle on the truck. The service advisor at the dealership called a few hours later to tell me that this incident happened because the Jeep's "master cylinder failed" and that "the parts are on national backorder" and "the parts are being built. " he said my Jeep is the first 2014 that this has happened to and advised that I would be in the loaner rental car for a minimum of one week while they await the parts to repair the Jeep.

9 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

My brake booster blew. Now awaiting brake booster and brake master cylinder. My Jeep is still in dealership garage. Jeep liaison is now telling me April 2 is delivery date of parts, this date seems to change weekly. Stating this is manufacturer's date of (out of stock parts) delivery to dealership.

10 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/04/2014

The brake booster on this vehicle failed causing the brakes to be nearly nonfunctional. The vehicle could be brought to a stop but only with both feet on the pedal pushing as hard as you can. This vehicle only has 50,000 miles on it used to commute about 40 miles to and from work on rural roads. So very little breaking is needed. The brake booster which failed was back ordered for 2 to 3 months and I was number 59 in line for one. My dealer had to use a booster from a salvage yard to get me back on the road. The master cylinder also had to be replaced because of an o ring failure which required replacement of the entire master cylinder. This should not be happening on such a new vehicle and if there are so many, why not a recall? this was paid for out of my pocket. I love Jeep, but this is a bit much.

11 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/14/2013

I started car, backed out of driveway, attempted to stop car, brake hard but would not stop car, complete loss of braking capability. Also loud hissing noise coming from under car. Car was brought to elmwood Chrysler e. Providence ri. Invoice no. 10569int. Cause found, brake booster and master cylinder faulty. Cost to repair $705. 37. I checked on line for Chrysler recalls, found two mentioning problems with brakes in Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured 11/2011 mfr on door is 11/11. Chrysler states recall id#102269 is in regards to brake boosters which is what went on my Jeep. As of 5/20/14 I have not received a recall notice, I sent all information and copies of invoices to Chrysler recall assistance center and Chrysler customer care on 4/3/14, received by them on 4/7/14, I received a call on 5/13/14 , spoke with bill, case no. 24885879 assigned by Chrysler, he was very rude, keep trying to get me to say that the brakes were soft, there were no brakes, pedal was hard to the touch, but no stoping power. Told me brake failure was not covered by recall. I am completely at a loss, not only of my $705. 37 but my respect and faith in Chrysler products, as from what I researched on line the recalls were for brake booster. Repair invoice states: cause found, brake booster & master cylinder faulty. This is the second major safety issue with this vehicle the first was in 8/2013, vehicle would automatically drop into first gear, it was a terrifying experience being that I was on the the highway traveling at 65 mph, to drop down to barely 5 mph, absolutely no acceleration, fortunately the solenoid-transmission & transduce-pressure sensor & nine other parts were covered under the warranty. I should be so lucky this time ! I feel that Chrysler has an obligation to stand behind it product when it come to the safety of the people who put their trust in them.

12 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

When trying to come to a stop, the brake pedal goes as far as allowed and vehicle continues to roll for 5, 10, 15 ft. The brakes operate as normal at speeds, but when you try to stop, it doesn't happen as expected. The dealership replaced the master cylinder and power brake booster. They would not cover the costs as it's out of manufacturer warranty, luckily I purchased the lifetime bumper to bumper extended warranty and they wanted me to pay the deductible associated with that policy. I was not happy with that either so I called Chrysler directly, they in turn called the dealership and told me to talk to the service manager to see if he'd waive the deductible. I was surprisingly successful at getting the deductible waived, but he did not have to. A vehicle with 43k should not have these issues and I see that I'm not the only one with this problem, therefore that is why I'm reporting it. I picked vehicle up 10/18/2013 and it seems to be braking normally at this time.

13 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/05/2013

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v643000 (air bags, seat belts); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact was concerned that the air bag would deploy in his face. The vehicle burned oil continuously and there was blue fumes coming from the rear of the vehicle. In addition, the horn sounded and the hood latch failed. The dealer repaired the vehicle. The brake master cylinder protective plate was repaired under NHTSA campaign notification p67. The fuel door mechanism was fractured and the dealer repaired the vehicle. The dip stick was not replaced. A grinder was marked for a new factory dip stick. The contact also stated that the dealer placed too much oil in the vehicle. When the vehicle was new with less than 200 miles, the instrument cluster failed and the contact could not see how fast the vehicle was driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed a short circuit in the sun visor wiring. The vehicle was repaired. The contact also stated that the locks unlocked on their own. When the button was pushed on the key fob to open the rear tailgate, it would not respond. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 11,351.

14 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/20/2013

Upon slowing down at normal deceleration rates, the brakes lost power allowing car to roll through a stop sign. The issue is intermittent and does not exhibit any observable pattern (outside temperature, etc). The dealer first said it was the rotors glazing, but the issue continued after the dealership turned them and the frequency has not reduced. The second visit found no issues after it was again reported. A third party resource indicated that it could be the master cylinder gasket/seal. Since this issue does not occur regularly and has not been "observed" by the dealership, the dealership will not replace the part. Since it does happen at a rate of only 1-2 times per week, it is tough to compensate for and/or predict when it will occur causing lack of confidence. Other notes are that abs does not kick in during the loss of power and the pedal is pushed in as far as possible with the car still moving forward between 5-10mph only decelerating slightly.

15 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/15/2012

The contact owns a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, she attempted decelerate and the brake pedal seized. The failure recurred several times. 18 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/04/2007

Vehicle was traveling approx 25 mph. Approaching intersection low pressure was applied to brakes with the intent to gradually increase pressure in order to come to a smooth stop. Almost immediately after applying light pressure to the brake pedal the brakes failed. The brake pedal was pushed completely to the floor but had no effect resulting in a complete failure and the vehicle entered a busy intersection. A delayed reaction application of the emergency brake gradually slowed the vehicle to a stop. Authorized service center (at place of purchase) stated the master cylinder failed and needed to be replaced.

19 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/08/2006

I experienced brake failure on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee (59,000 miles). After braking to turn a corner the brakes would not work. This occurred over several instances and became very un-nerving not knowing when the brakes would work. I took it to the Jeep dealer and he stated that he replaced the master cylinder. He also said it was not covered by the brake recall so I had to pay several hundred dollars to get it repaired out of my own pocket. I contacted Jeep and they were no help and wouldn't agree to pay anything.

25 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2004

Had occasionally heard a sound outside the vehicle like a hose letting off air . . . Figured it was the compressor. Today, I got in the vehicle and backed out of my garage and heard a steady flow of air that sometimes rose and fell in pitch. I determined that a flexible housing covering the linkage from the brake pedal to the master cylinder vacuum booster had burst open after what appears to be shearing from continual wear on the rubber boot itself. I do not know what this is caused by or how serious it is. I still have brakes, but under what conditions I do not know. The shearing of this rubber by the mechanism itself appears to be something that could be in common with any Grand Cherokee. Please let me know what your find out.

26 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/11/2004

Brakes real soft and spongy. At a stop the brake master cylinder will bottom out with a steady foot pressure on the brake pedal. On one occassion while backing out of a parking spot, the brakes failed. The pedal went right to the bottom out point with vary little stopping power. When I pulled forward and applied the brake at about 15 mph the anti-lock system activated. After going forward and stopping a couple of times the brake pedal came back to what the dealer calls normal. It seems like there is air getting into the system. I have been to three different dealers and met with a Chrysler tech rep to no avail.

27 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

28 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/19/2003

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I bought new last September. I had trouble with the brakes. Last March because it was necessary to pump them. The dealership said that I was probably defeating the abs, and that's why they depressed so far to the floor. Today I was having a problem with the brake pedal squeaking. They told me it was "normal" and that it was the master cylinder. I asked if was normal, would it then be on most other Jeep Grand Cherokees and they said they didn't know but thought it was. They then said that maybe there was a problem that Jeep needed to know about. They are going to replace the master cylinder but I thought you should know because this seems to be ongoing. Thank you.

29 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

30 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/04/2001

Unexpected loss of brakes was experienced when brake pedal was depressed. Driver was approaching a parking spot when the failure of the brakes occurred. When the brake pedal was depressed it went to the floor. Inability to stop caused vehicle to jump the parking curb and crash into the corner of a concrete block constructed building. Damage to the vehicle was the primary damage experienced. Test ing of brakes by owner was unable to recreare the failure. The master cylinder was suspect when it was noted the fluid level was below previous observed level. Master cylinder was removed and hydraulic fluid was found to be leaking around the plunger shaft. Also, a significant amount of hydraulic fluid was found inside the power brake booster. During discussion of the problem with the service representative at jimmie vickers it became evident this was a problem they have seen before. The representative stated they are surprised it is not a recall item. I hope this is the first step to make others aware before a serious incident occurs to another unwary driver.

31 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/05/2000

Regarding the brakes: after repeated (3 times) complaints about the brake pedal going all the way to the floor (when driven under stop and go commuter-type traffic) and each time there was "no trouble found" I finally (on 7/29/2000) drove into the dealership with the pedal all the way down to the floor. A mechanic was called and said there was definitely a problem and they summized "it must be the master cylinder". With respect to the engine: after repeated complaints (at least 3 times) of oil leaking from under the engine and having it dismissed as 1) sloppy oil change, excess oil from left on engine block, 2) faulty oil filter, 3) rear main engine seal (rear main was replaced) and continuing to have oil leaks, on 7/29/2000, I brought it in and the dealership says the engine is "porous" and the entire engine needs replacement. I was advised to not take the vehicle due to the brake issue. The vehicle is at the dealership awaiting arrival of a new engine and replacement and also installation of the master cylinder. With respect to the differential whine, I have been told twice "it is normal" and nothing will be done. .

32 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/01/1999

This vehicle has cost us over $3,000 in the first 1 year and half we have owned it. I have never owned a vehicle with this little of mileage and had everything go up. We feel this auto is a total lemon and people should be made aware of the problems of this particular vehicle. We have never towed anything nor had it on anything other surface other than a paved road. I'm not sure what if anything you can do for us, but letting the NHTSA know about this vehicle is some reassurance. What really upsets me is that we bought this vehicle from a supposed reputable dealer. Thank you for your time. I'd appreciate any information you can provide me on this particular vehicle as far as any other owner complaints etc. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. No safety defect listed within summary.
