4 wheel drive failure on snowy incline vehicle came out of 4 wheel low , lost control of vehicle and vehicle slid backwards at least 75 to 100 ft. Into an embankment. Prior to this failure, I was coming up snowy driveway the night before and had vehicle in 4 wheel low and vehicle would not make it up hill and slid backwards on me, at that time I thought it was due to my driving however the next day it occurred again and realized that vehicle had kicked out of 4 wheel drive and only rear wheels working. Premature wearing of front brake pads and rotors causing vehicle to vibrate, shimmy and squeal when appling brakes. Dt.

Rear axle bearings replaced twice now. Brake rotor warpage a direct result of caliper design. Replaced rotors with after market and still warped. Replaced calipers with after market and needed $115. 00 repairs to rotors that had 8000 miles on them. Engine oil leak and odor from manifold gasket leak at front og engine. Door check roller on drivers door broke off completely. May not be a warranty repair. Will invoke lemon law if rear bearings fail another time. Chrysler built a real piece of garbage!!!.

Heard noise coming from rearend and transmission slipped. Took it to petri Jeep in scottsdale, az. They said bearings were worn out in
rear diff and transmission needed to be rebuild. Ok, they fixed it,
at 71000 miles. I think this was way too soon. The Jeep now has 88000,
the transmission is acting up again and the humming noise is returning. At
75000 my extended warranty expired. Im not happy!!!.

Between years 3 and 5 replaced both tail light assembly units. Not covered under extended warranty. Problem starting vehicle. Took to dealer at least 5 times. Dealer kept replacing fuel pump and saying it was bad. Problem still occurs. Replaced transmission sensor. Replaced hood hydraulics. Now hearing noise from rear end at any speed. Being told by my mechanical that rear end needs to be replaced.
While driving, consumer applied brakes and without warning brakes made noise and skipped. The rear axle seals were leaking. Left front out side mirror was loose. The right front window rattles. The rear hatch light was inoperable. The brakes pulsated and the rotors were resurfaced. Shock absorber makes noise when hitting slight bumps. The vehicle rattle in front at 15-30 mph. The front tires were wearing out due to misalignment. The vehicle was hard to start after warmed up.

While driving there's a rattling noise. Took vehicle to dealer, and they stated it was the differential. Please provide any further information.
There was loud noise coming from the vehicle. When taken to dealer, dealer replaced differential.
The vehicle is "hopping" up to stop signs/stop lights. The steering wheel shudders when applying brakes at 50-60 mph. The differential was faulty from day "one", and has been disassembled and reassembled/ parts replaced up to four times. It will be fine for awhile then the whinnying/whistling/groaning progressively gets worse until I fear for my safety and take it back to the dealer for repair again. I believe this repair is faulty from the factory. ****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis****761448.
The rear differential began making a howling noise getting louder and louder. Pinion gear has play and is loose where it enters the differential. The local dealer here in ventura California says that it is not warranty and we will have to pay for it. This is ridiculous due to the low mileage on the vehicle. It has not been driven off road nor pulled heavy loads. I have driven many vehicles over the last 20 years and have never had a differential problem before till now. I see on your site also that this is a known problem. . . What is the fix? of course Chrysler does not want to deal with it. I see also that persons who have had repairs performed at the dealership have had the same problem reoccur. It seems this assembly may be defective?.
Transfer case bad on delivery. Snap ring not installed unit replaced. Brake rotors warp every 20k miles. Replaced with aftermarket at 40k. . Steering column clunk and feels loose. Dealer replaced with new, same problem exists. Excessive clunking and looseness in driveline. Loud clunk park to reverse dealer says normal but lots of complaints. Mr.

Rear differential.
Consumer stated there was a noise coming from the rear differential, when driving at high speeds, the dealer replaced noisy ring and pinion gears and all bearings.
During slow speed turns in reverse or forward, strange grinding and honking noises come from front of vehicle in axle and steering area. Can also feel the grinding sensation. Have contacted dealer service department several times and am told there is a pending recall for this problem, but that they haven't received it nor have they received the replacement parts necessary to fix the problem. Appears to be very similar to NHTSA TSB service bulletin numbers 0300101a & 1900401 (NHTSA item numbers sb625612 & sb621896). Were assured by service manager that problem will not harm vehicle in long-run, and that we can drive it normally until recall items are received at service department. We're concerned however about safety factors and possible long-term damage, especially as we've been given no eta on when we can have the vehicle fixed.
Vehicle has several jerks when decelerating and accelerating. Brake rotors(4) had to be replaced. Brake pads also had to be replaced. U-joint replaced. Ring gear and pinion problems. Transmission jerking. Sunroof vibrations when sunroof is open. Overall a nightmare of a vehicle purchase.
Rear differential failed driving off of lot after purchase, dealer replaced entire rear bell housing gears.
A brief search on internet shows many people have this problem. If failure were to happen at high rate of speed, serious injury could result. No safety defect.
Fuel gauge - vehicle runs out of fuel at 1/4 tank marker. Ts.
Seal on rear differential was leaking, had to be replaced. Front bearings were replaced. Front wheel hubs were replaced, consumer states basically, the front and rear axles were replaced.
Jeep was dragging in drivetrain like vehicle was pulling something. Cross pin in differential was walking in the case because it was elongating, causing screw that holds cross pin to break. Mechanic ordered parts from Chrysler, who has been repairing a lot of the same problems.
My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo had a new differential install edat 15,000 miles; two new front rotors at 36,000 and should have been done way before this; back brake drum cracked at 36,000 miles; front rotors redone again at 42000 miles; and now the motor at 52,000 miles. We had not indication (noise, etc) of the motor going, I was traveling aroung 5-10 miles per hour turning into our road and it felt like something heavy dropped out of the vehicle, it sounded like metal going through a fan. A piece of the block fell out onto the road and the people at the local dealer said they had never seen any thing like it before. It was like a bomb went off inside the motor. My question -- should chyrsler be responsible for this motor, it will be in the range of $6,000. Thank you.
There is a loud noise coming from the drive train of the vehicle. Believe it may be related to the rear differential. The Jeep dealer at the 30,000 mile service put the wrong fluid in and it was driven before I caught it. All the seals under the vehicle leaked again at 59,000 and another Jeep dealer supposedly replaced the fluids with the right type.
Total of 4 total brake(rotor/pad) repairs needed alomg with: rear diff, oil seals, calipers, steering stabilizers, brake lines. All mileage is highway with little brakage.
The front differential was faulty causing front end noise while driving. Nlm.
Vehicle experienced major pulsation when braking, the brake and disc rotors were warped, dealer replaced those and a a pad kit, shoe kit parking brake, shoe kit rear disc brake, seal axle drive shaft, and brake shoe and lining assembly, about 6000 mile later, problem returned, brake pads and rotors were replaced along with the shoe kit front disc brake. Gear kit center differential, gear kit ring and pinion, bearing -drive pinion, shimdrive pinion, seal drive pinion, and shim differential pinion were replaced. About 12000 miles later, vehicle is experiencing brake pulsation again, dealership is stating the vehicle has rotor runnout front and rear, this will be the fourth set of brakes on this vehicle, consumer states this is a safety hazard that continues to occur.
Front differentials and the rear differentials and propellar shaft had to be replaced, now experiencing lots of stalling and engine would die whenever coming to a stop, sometime it seems to lunge forward and just die, installed new transmission.
We have had the rotors "shaved" at 12,000 miles, supposedly replaced at 22,000 miles and started having problems again at 31000 miles car vibrates violently, driver seat belt keeps jamming, the differential had to be replaced and the fuel pump had to be replaced.
Vehicle is all wheel drive full time. Has low mileage and been regularly maintained by authorized dealers. At 65,000 miles the car began emitting high pitched sounds originally thought to be from new tires(4 put on car). It was later determined after several thousands miles that at a minimum the bearings in the front differential were bad and at least one authorized dealer has claimed that they the rear are bad as well. Both differentials simultaneously. Obvious concern for several reasons: 1)the car is all wheel drive full time. Extensive damage to the differentials at high speed or while towing as a result of bearings and gears being damaged. 2) all dealers claim this is a regularly occuring problem in the Jeep cherokee of that year as well as others 3)it has been suggested that the problems will occur in the same timeframes throughout the life of the car in spite of "regular authorized and scheduled maintenance" as has occured on this vehicle since it was purchased. In lieu of safety concerns is also the suggestion that it will cost 5-10% of the car's purchase price every 65,000 miles to repair this same problem.
Consumer heard a grinding noise while driving vehicle. Dealer determined rear differential had to be replaced. When leaving dealership after repair was done, consumer heard the same grinding noise. On 30 Jan, 2001 front differential was replaced.
Noise and vibration coming from differential unit.
While traveling 60mph heard a noise. Noticed smoke in rear mirror. Tried getting off freeway beside ramp. Parked vehicle. Vehicle caught on fire. Towed to dealer. Informed rear differential had gotten hot which caused fire. Had been to dealership several times complaining about differential.

Wheel bearings & differential bearings failed w/ less than 50k mi.
Member in military stationed in republic of korea. Phone prefix: "011" no safety defect listed.
Had front and rear axle assemblies rebuilt in February, 2000. After 18. 000 mile, axleshaft seal on driver's side is leaking. Repair will cost over $500. 00.
What a lemon! we are averaging $2000/year in repairs. Power windows that stop working, water pump breaks, brake rotors need replacing before brakes wear out, leaking differential, transmission, and now we're told by dealer service department we need a new transfer case. Whoever designed/built/sold this vehicle doesn't have much pride in their workmanship.
The quadra drive system includes the differential, transmission, and gerotor couplings and pumps. When the automatic transmission is shifting from one gear to the next it hesitates in neutral long enough for all the power to be transferred to the front wheels. When the transimssion does engage the next gear all of the power is transferred back to the rear wheels resulting in a loud thud. I do not know how the vehicle would respond when road conditions were not optimal. The manufacture response has been they have not been able to duplicate the problem.
