While slowing to a stop, engine dies and vehicle loses all power steering and brakes making vehicle extremely unsafe. This has just begun happening on this vehicle at approx. 28,000 miles. However, it has happened twice in the past two days.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee shuts off while driving at highway speed. Once it started again on its own and then the second time it required that I restart the ignition.

Engine would not start -- replaced fuel filter which was full of odd debris [mechanic, non-dealer, cut it open to inspect]. Four days later same problem. Did some research online and found several complaints that the gas tank lining can deterioatesand leave debris in tank which passes to filter then beyond. Car is now at dealer awaiting diagnosis. Dealer rep says he is unaware of any such problem with the gas tank.

Vehicles dies under any circumstances. . . Speeding on the highway at 75 mph, idling at a stop sign, driving in town at 35 mph, hot weather, cold weather, rain, sun and snow. It sometimes starts right up again, sometimes takes an hour - occasionally 5-10 hours before it will restart. Instrument panel simply goes dead, engine stops, no warning. This has nearly caused accidents 15-20 times. Towed 8 times. . . Waited it out the rest. Dealer will not help unless they can duplicate problem - cannot duplicate an intermittent problem, so there 'is no problem'. Personal mechanic identified the problem as the computer, tried to order one from Jeep several times, always told it is on backorder. Interesting. . . Back ordered part for 'no problem'. The computer was apparently replaced just before I purchased the car.

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, 4. 0 liter, SUV. Since approximately August of this year, the engine has misfired eleven (11) times. Each time there is a misfire, there is an immediate power loss, and loss of speed, almost like an emergency braking situation. One event, on 8/15/05, when traveling on I-66 near fairfax, va two cylinders, nos. 1 and 4 misfired at the same time. The result was an immediate loss of power during acceleration and loss of speed from approximately 65 mph (rate of traffic at 3 pm rush hour) to approximately 25-30 mph within 50 yards. This incident nearly caused a serious accident, because other vehicles had to brake and swerve to avoid colliding with mine. There was no where to pull over to the side of the road, and luckily I was able to maintain control and continue at a slower rate of speed, until I could move to the right and stop in the emergency lane. After turning the engine off, the vehicle will run normally when restarted. As previously stated, it has misfired 11 times, and by stopping the engine, then restarting it, normal operating can resume. Chrysler corporation has been unable to repair the defect, after having taken it to the shop on nine or ten different occasions. They have replaced the spark plugs, tested the engine for carbon deposit build-up on the valve stems, and replaced the crankshaft sensor that the computer uses to fire the engine. Now, the manufacturer has said it may be the computer module, it may be the coil pack, or the engine may need to be disassembled to see if there is any carbon build-up on the valve stems. This condition makes the vehicle unsafe to operate, not knowing when it will happen again, and if it will cause a serious accident to occur. Maybe NHTSA can light a fire under their creative minds to come up with a positive solution. I have 63,000 miles on the vehicle, and the whole series of incidents began when there was approximately 49,000 miles on it.

2005 Jeep laredo exhibits apparent engine skipping, thrashing, etc when traveling at approx 1200-1500 rpm up a grade (engine under light load). Dealer and manufacturer say that this is a performance characteristic of the vehicle. Service manager of mckinney Dodge in easley SC (tony) says that "every one of them do this, new or with a few miles - worse after a few miles". Service manager indicates that he has no clue how to fix the problem, asked me to call national number (probably trying to get me off the lot). Called national number, they called local dealer (tony) and were told that the problem could not be fixed, therefore denying that it was a problem at all. National Chrysler folks said it was an operating characteristic of the vehicle and that nothing could/would be done "at this time". I put "500" under "number of failures" in the form below just because I had to put some number. It happens every time the car is driven.
Rear main crankshaft oil seal failure service bulletn, dated 3/15/96 nhts reference no 5423.

Driving down city street to work, heard loud pop followed by clank clank coming from engine, immediately pulled over, mechanic diagnosed problem as broken connecting rod. Dealer wants $6000 to rebuild motor.
Purchased November 2001, had two recalls for fuel system within two months, dealer told me there was previous recall fixed before I purchased. Engine safety warning light has come on and stayed on several days on seven (7) separate occasions. Dealer claims not to worry cannot figure out why. Plus seat heater went out and had to be replaced, interior heater stopped working except defrost. I believe they are all related and is why the engine safety warning light keeps coming on. Also to note--vehicle sways back and forth over small bumps, like riding a small boat in rough water.

Vehicle accelerated from 70 mph while going down interstate. Cruise control was not on at the time. Applying brakes slowed vehicle down but engine continued to accelerate. Vehicle couldn't be stopped with full pressure applied to brakes and emergency brake all the way on. Had to turn key off and stop engine. Cranked engine back up and everything worked ok. This happened to an 18 year old female and was a very trying experience. Luckily she handled everything properly, but was quite shaken up by the incidence.

No summary listed for above vehicle.
Engine check light comes on, and vehicle will lose all power. Contacted dealer. They replaced many parts, but could not solve problem. Problem kept reoccurring.
Vehicle cuts off intermittently while driving at highway speeds. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.
While driving heard a noise, vehicle started smoking,. Consumerpulled over. Engine blewout contacted dealer.
This vehicle has had several problems since date of lease. Although in this matter, engine blew after intial 36,000 mile coverage--diamler Chrysler has agreed to pay half of repair amount. This agreement is unsatisfactory in my opinion and I wish to find out what my options are to resolve this matter and get into another vehicle. It was very fortunate that there was not a fatality involved as this happened on a major interstate with no warning.
While driving at highway speeds consumer noticed smoke coming from front end of vehicle, next a puff of smoke let out, and engine died. Consumer felt lucky there was no accident, and did not feel unsafe driving this vehicle. Please provide any further information.
Engine cuts off intermittently. Also, backfires intermittently. Dealer is aware of problems. Please provide further details.
While driving at any speed vehicle will shut off. Contacted dealer several times, but the dealer could not solve problem.
While driving on freeway and going up hill there is a hesitation coming from engine. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide any further information. Consumer states the transfer case is binding on turns and the gears tend to click when driving over 70 mph.
I have taken my car into either courtesy motors in chico California or normandin Jeep in chico California. Each time, my car was returned to me unrepaired. No safety defect listed in summary.
Vehicle sometimes won't start, and sometimes it will start. Took vehicle to mechanic, and they couldn't find cause of problem. Took to another mechanic and he changed ignition wires, but problem still exists.
Vehicle was completely shut down by computer while travelling 60mph on freeway, resulting in several near collisions at high speed -- a cam sensor failure, according to the dealer.
While stopping on a hill and trying to get into in a highway vehicle was without power. Gas gauge showed that tank still had fuel, but, in reality, did not had any fuel.
Chrysler does not want to take responsibilty for problem or admit that there is a problem. No safety defect.
The engine has completely shut off in the middle of driving or when at a stoplight. This has occured at least 3 times in the 8 months we have owned it. All engine power and electrical power go off completely when it occurs. We called the dealership and they said, "let me guess, it's been quitting on you". That pissed me off because they knew about it but didn't notify anyone of the potential life threatening effects it could have. It's obviously happened to a large number of owners and when your traveling at high speeds and the engines quits it makes braking near impossible.
While driving, engine stops and locks the steering wheel resulting no control on the Jeep.
Dealer examined and replaced the control unit twice. No help. Idle speed is too low (400mph)! I want Jeep to do something. It's a lemon!.
This automobile shuts off the engine while driving. There are no mechanical indicators of the problem. This is the 3rd time that the car has simply shut off while driving. This is a very dangerous occurrence.
Vehicle dies for no apparent reason. Have been told it will continue to happen even after it was in the shop for this problem. Transmission jerks when shifting in low speeds. This happens on a daily basis. Service techs at dealership have no answers for this problem. I get the feeling I will just have to live with it dying and jerking as long as I own the Jeep. This vehicle should have stayed on the drawing board just a little longer I think.
When stopping vehicle idles and shuts down, and there are no warning lights.
On 2 separate occasions engine repeatedly lost power at highway speed. First incident, engine check appeared & dealer replaced oxygen sensor. Second incident (2 weeks later) dealer unable to determine problem & still looking. Has never happened during city driving. Keeping gas tank full appears to eliminate problem, but may be coincidential.
This vehicle has many/many inherent problems, it has an enging problem that causes the engine to stop running. We are told that they dont know what the problem is but would like to put CO pilot in the car to log a code when the problem occurs, however we have been told that they have had this problem on other cars and have not been able to have the CO pilot log in any error codes. So they bought the car back from the owners. It would take quite some time for us to list all of the inherent problems that all these new Jeeps have 1999 0r 2000 models. If you could go to the site on the net and type in 4x44u you will be astounded at all the frustrated folks nation wide. The car also has many drivetrain problems to many to list, it is overwhelming. Please help us, we worked hard for that $38. 000 dollars we gave to Chrysler and they are just putting it back on us, the customer's. Thank you very much. Ken and barb davis.
Each malfunction has severely effected the use & safety of the vehicle. Dealership is not interested in the problems.
After having been driven for 5 minutes the car was parked in driveway. 20 minutes later the engine rupted in flames. Fire extinguished by police and fire dept. Special inspector and insurance appraiser declared the vehicle totally destroyed. After 7 weeks Chrysler has given no information on cause of fire and we still do not have a replacement nor a rental car (except for the drive home from new york to florida) . A vehicle has been offered this week by resolution center but only on condition that we reimburse them $860. 00 for mileage driven ( which = $. 26 per mile. ).
