38 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/31/1999

If your using any of the gears to apply engine braking in a downgrade once the tachometer reaches 2500 or more the engine enters a freewheeling state where there is little or no slowing effect. With the use of any gear, after the initial braking caused by the engine revving to match the gear speed (flywheel effect) the engine goes into a "high idle" state and offers no more compression braking. The only way to slow in downgrades is excessive use the brakes. Use of any reasonable gear for the speed does little good. Most states have laws against putting your car into neutral while moving for this reason. No compression braking in mountaineous driving will lead to brake loss due to overheating. Towing a trailer would make things worse. I believe no engine braking is a serious safety defect. This vehicle requires more brake application downhill than any other vehicle I have driven.

While driving vehicle on highway about 60 mph the vehicle lost power and the engine was still on. According to the gas gauge the tank had at less than a quarter of a tank of gas, and comsumer thinks the tank was empty. Jeep manufacturer said they were aware of the problem; they had issued a technical bulletin to the dealer and not to the public. According to the comsumer, the dealer said they had heard of this problem only in florida, not in the north. The manufacturer told comsumer they did not issue a recall because they did not know which vehicle has the problem.

46 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/10/1997

Multiple rear axle problems, each diagnosed by owner prior to failure. (the dealer didn't want to admit there was a problem) this vehicle has averaged one new rear axle every year, including this year which I am waiting on parts. The engine's faulty mass airflow sensor quit operation while driving down the rocky mountains on some switchback roads. The engine abrubtly quit running, causing the vehicle to loose steering and braking control. Only quick thinking by using the parking brake saved the four people in the vehicle from eminent death. The engine reluctantly restarted after a few seconds and we continued down the mountains. However, a few minutes later the engine died without warning for a second time and we were forced to hold the Jeep on the mountainside with the parking brake engaged. I can't believe no one has died from this vehicle! this situation has occured on two separate trips, approximately one year apart, after reprogramming the engine management computer, and replacing the mass airflow sensor and remapping the engine management computer for a second time. For the first two years I owned this vehicle, it was in the shop over 36 times for warranty related repairs. What a piece of junk!( dot number: tire size: p225/65r16 ).

47 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

54 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Vehicle is having many problems with abs and brakes, on one occasion, front brakes locked up, causing skidding and shaking throughout steering wheel, TSB 879 has been complete, rotors have been found warped several times and have been replaced, brake pads have been replaced, pulsation and vibration are felt due to faulty brakes, however dealer can not remedy problem. Torque converter was replaced, consumer states that a noise is in the transmission after driving a while. Engine surges while driving at 55 mph and above.

55 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I sent a detailed letter to daimler Chrysler after being refused by dealer. They only refunded my money for the cost of the front rotors. They would not reimburse me for the labor charges. I can't understand how they can do that when I had them replaced before the recall. That should show there is a problem. I wrote about all my problems with this "lemon" but I could not claim it was a lemon because I was leasing it at the time and in PA, a vehicle can only be declared a "lemon" when it is purchased, not leased. Very dissatisfied with daimler/Chrysler because they simply washed their hands of the entire problem. I have other problems to report, along with the receipts to prove they were investigated but nothing was ever done to correct the problems. Please contact me to forward all receipts proving complaints before warranty expired. Thank you.

Engine difficult to start when hot. When engine is hot and you let sit for a short period of time and trying to restart, it turns over but acts as starved of fuel. Now turn the key off and try to restart, it will start but sometimes chokes down then shutters up to recommended idle speed.

61 Gasoline Engine problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Car would not stay started, mechanic replaced fuel tank and pump, due to admition of Jeep's faulty fuel tanks in '96 Jeeps. This has occurred 2 more times withing 1 month since first occurrance. All three times, tank and pump were replaced with no better outcome. Jeep says this is not a safety hazard!!! I believe it is, I was driving and the car just quit, I had to figure some way to avoid getting hit on the busy 2 lane 55 mile an hour road I was on. If they are going to admit to a problem, then they should fix and pay for the mistake! nlm.
