Steering became difficult to turn while driving at low speeds. Dealer tested and found that the steering gear came apart internally sending metal fragments throughout the entire power steering system. Dealer found it necessary to replace power steering pump, gear box, radiator fan because it is hydraulically ran through the power steering pump, the return and pressure power steering hoses ect. Dealer repaired at a cost of $2846. 53 plus tax. Later I found out there was a recall on the steering gear box however our Jeep was not part of the recall due to the VIN # .

5 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/01/2005

My wife started the car and began to back out of her parking space. She suddenly found that she could not turn the steering wheel and warning lights on the dash board started to go on. If this had occurred while driving at highway speeds, she most likely would have lost control of the vehicle and crashed. When I checked, I found that the cast aluminum bracket holding the power steering pump had broken in 3 places, allowing the serpentine belt to fall off. Examination of the fractures showed that one was much older than the others, suggesting that the bracket had broken in one place much earlier and that the first break had increased the strain on other parts of the bracket, resulting in the eventual total failure. When I replaced the bracket, I noted that manufacturer had increased the thickness of the reinforcing ribs in the casting and added a new rib in the area where the older fracture had occurred. The dealer parts clerk also anticipated which engine option I had in the vehicle when I told him the model and the part I needed, and indicated that the dealership had around 30 pieces of the replacement part in stock. Since the manufacturer clearly knows that this part is defective and since the failure of the part has the potential to cause a catastrophic accident, this really should be the subject of a recall. It is possible that major crashes have been caused by this failure without being attributed to it since a frontal impact to the vehicle would also be likely to break this bracket, obscuring the fact that the bracket broke prior to impact. Other model years with this engine and other engine options in this model year have the power steering pump bolted directly to the engine block (no bracket required). The purpose of this bracket appears to be to allow the use of the same power steering pump on two different engine options (reducing cost).

6 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/14/2005

This is my 4th Jeep. Here is a little background on this issue. I purchased a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the overland edition. The dealership pushed buying a used certified Jeep vehicle! they mentioned the extended warranty that would take care of any issues that the Jeep had during the last years of my ownership. I went in the dealership looking to purchase a new vehicle but they told me all the added benefits / value from buying from the used Jeep facility! the warranty: as mentioned I purchased the warranty sold by Jeep at the local dealership. The service agreement that was sold by the dealership went bankrupt! gary miller Chrysler Jeep isuzu located in erie, PA sold this to me. My 1st issue was when I decided to take the vehicle in because of a vibration while driving. I was made aware that the company was bankrupt when tying to call and find out what information will be needed when I go to the local Jeep dealership in kansas city. Furthermore I mentioned to the Jeep dealership that pushed the contract that I am wiling to purchase the best contract to make sure I do not have an issue with my new vehicle in the future. The constant issues: I have now taken in my Jeep for 6 visits! I have only included some of the payments (see the additional paperwork) but you can see a trend here. This Jeep had been nothing but a problem since I purchased the vehicle! I am now stuck replacing the steering pump for the 2nd time! I have to pay for the replacement and live without a vehicle. I am out several thousand dollars and still have to take this vehicle (that Jeep pushed on me) to the service shop about every 6 months. I just started driving my vehicle from the last service repair (I am getting very familiar to the local Jeep dealerships) and still the item is not fixed and my Jeep is leaking oil all over our company driveway. This vehicle is a lemon and the company that made the vehicle sold me a bankrupt contract.

While driving on I-95 at about 0630 hours east bound towards exit 53 in branford, CT when and without any noise or warning it became extremely difficult to steer the 2005, Jeep grand, cherokee. Dealer, branhaven motors , branford, CT has indicated that the belt, hose to the power steering unit, and hood insulation mat will be replaced. Power steering fluid was sprayed over the entire engine compartment. No fire only an acrid odor. Question? what about the power steering unit. 9 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/09/2005

The first time this happened, I was moving my car out of the garage and as I backed out of my driveway, the steering wheel froze and I was unable to turn it at all. I had to shut of the car then turn it back on again. The scond time I was driving down the street and needed to turn my steering wheel to the left, and it froze up. I was unable to turn my steering wheel at all. I had to stop my vehicle in the middle of the road, put it in park and turn it off, then back on again to reset it. I looked up on the internet any recalls and I was given a technical service bulletin that there is a problem with the steering: gear box. However, the dealerships will not fix it for free.

10 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/29/2004

When turning left, and left only, I hear a squealing sound in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The noise does not occur initially, but only after the engine has been running for a little while. It sounds a lot like a belt squeal. I took it to the dealer 3 times, and they always say there is nothing wrong, but I know that not all Jeeps make this noise. Even slightly turning the wheel will cause the noise. The dealer suggested a power steering hose, but then said that wasn't the problem. No changes have been made. Squeal gets louder the longer the engine runs.

11 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/26/2004

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited which I took into the shop for optional maintenance while I was away on vacation. Merely one day after picking up the car, my power steering mounting bracket broke completely away from the engine assembly. I lost all steering capability. Fortunately I was only 2 blocks from home in a 35mph zone, and had not gotten on the freeway at that point. I managed to drive it to a point in the road that curved in and got the vehicle haphazardly to the curb where I called aaa. The car was towed back to the dealership that had just done the maintenance. They informed me that they had never seen the steering bracket/pump come fully away from an engine before. Not having any options, I had them repair and replace whatever parts were necessary. But I'm shocked that this happened, and I'm just thankful that no one was killed or injured including me. Because this is (in the words of the service manager) an "extremely rare" occurance which they had "never seen before", I have to suspect one of two things, 1. Either faulty equipment on the part of Jeep, or 2. Tampering by the mechanic to cause failure. If this occured regularly, there would be death tolls in the thousands every day from losing all steering on one's vehicle. The steering malfunction also caused other damage to my cooling system and my fan cover due to the serpentine belt coming loose. While the vehicle was running the belt spun around freely at about 1000 rpms according to the technician he suspected that this was what caused the other damage, so the car was also overheating.

12 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/01/2004

The steering on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee becomes hard at times when I am driving or attempting to park in a parking space. Your web site lists this problem as a recall for this vehicle. I never received a recall notice from Chrysler Jeep ,so I called 1-24-06 and was told by Chrysler that the recalls were VIN number specific and my Jeep was not one of them. Chrysler is not taking any action at this time to address this issue for me.

13 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

15 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/09/2002

The detail around this is that the bracket holding the power steering pump failed and the pump fell and knocked off the steering drive belt causing the power steering to fail. The car was not controlable even at these low speeds. If this would have happened at freeway speeds, this could have disastrous with fatalities. Because one half of the bolt remained, it had to be drilled out from the engine, block, rethreaded and then a new bracket put on costing $290. 32.

16 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/04/2002

Our vehicle has a growling noise in the steering system. This occurs occasionally when turning the wheels to the right, whether driving forward or backwards. Dealer 1 took the car for a day an reported that parts would have to be ordered. They would call when parts arrived. After several fruitless attempt to determine if parts had arrived, car was taken to dealer 2 whose service manager immediately recognized the symptoms and replaced the power steering hoses and valves. On the second visit, nothing was corrected as dealer 2 checked the steering wheel area valves and bearings. Dealer 2 said that Jeep engineers are aware of the problem and expect to have a fix in a month or two. First purchased in June 2002 and noticed within one week. Noise continues to be present. Is there a steering and control issue looming on the horizon?.

19 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/11/2002

My power steering began to fail last February and it fails whenever I am going at speeds below 20mph or if I am off of the gas pedal. I have talked to several Jeep owners (2000 or 1999 models) that are experiencing the same problem. When I call daimler Chrysler they contend that they are unaware of any problem with the power steering. I don't believe it. I have also had problems with the seat heaters. I have had to replace the drivers side twice and now the rarely used passenger side heater is failing. They told me during my second repair that the 1999 Jeeps have a very fragile part and that they have replaced them with a better part for the 2000 Jeeps. I had to pay repair costs on my second repair because my warranty had expired and I'm afraid that they may not even cover this new problem even though they admitted that the part is faulty and very fragile.

21 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/10/2002

During slow speed turns in reverse or forward, strange grinding and honking noises come from front of vehicle in axle and steering area. Can also feel the grinding sensation. Have contacted dealer service department several times and am told there is a pending recall for this problem, but that they haven't received it nor have they received the replacement parts necessary to fix the problem. Appears to be very similar to NHTSA TSB service bulletin numbers 0300101a & 1900401 (NHTSA item numbers sb625612 & sb621896). Were assured by service manager that problem will not harm vehicle in long-run, and that we can drive it normally until recall items are received at service department. We're concerned however about safety factors and possible long-term damage, especially as we've been given no eta on when we can have the vehicle fixed.

Steering had been making a wining sound on slow turns for about a month. Dealer could not find the problem. Said it was just noise not danger. Was pulling small u-hall trailer down mountain in 2nd gear. On tight mountain turn had very stiff steering, no power steering. Went into nearby town and turned street corners, problem continued. Shifted into drive and problem disappeared. Went over another mountain pass in drive and problem reoccured on all tight turns at speeds of about 1 or 2 mph. Normal highway turns had no problems. Cost for me to replace is $760. Do not understand this component failing with this low mileage. Dealer has this part on national backorder. Failure Date: 06/20/2000

The daimlerchrysler district manager for maryland and d. C. First told me that the "crown" of the roadway was the cause of my problems with this 2000 Jeep grand lemon - when pressed to present a more creditable explanation for the extreme steering pull to the right side of the roadway, his answer was: "mr. Jackson, I'm telling you as the washington zone manager for daimler Chrysler that I cannot find any problems with this Jeep and as the zone manager for maryland I say you do not have a problem, therefore daimlerchrysler does not consider this Jeep to be defective. As the daimler Chrysler zone manager I am telling you that in my opinion there are no problems with this vehicle". --- what a load of !@#$% !!!!!!!! --- (a complimentary load of !@#$% seems to be standard equipment on all Jeep Grand Cherokees and this is one feature I could do without) --- the daimerchrysler people have proven to me that they are arrogant, flat out liars. They just laughed at me when I said I would be reporting these problems to NHTSA. They just don't care. -- in two or three years, when daimler-benz finally dumps the Chrysler division into that deep cesspool of defective products and obscene customer service, I will be happy to attend the corporate liquidation sale in auburn hills - driving my new Honda.
