Purchased used 2020 Grand Cherokee at christmas time 2023. Vehicle had 25640 miles on it. On April 24, 2024 while driving home maybe 2 miles from home, I was lucky not to crash when losing steering response. A warning message appeared on the speedo, stating, “power steering unavailable service required “. 28k miles is about 2,400 miles driven to date. I drove straight home and made an appointment for service. Koons Chevrolet where I bought the car performed diagnostic testing to determine replacement of the steering gear rack and pinion would require replacement and the repair $5800 parts and labor. The module is internal and not serviceable therefore the whole steering gear must be replaced. Cost is prohibitive for a fairly new vehicle.

The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 mph, the power steering warning light illuminated, and the steering wheel became difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the steering rack and pinion was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic who replaced the steering rack and pinion, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 55,000.

While driving on a city street the electric power steering failed with no prior indication of a problem. This made the vechile very difficult to steer at low speed. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a failed electric power steering pump. The repair requires replacement of a complete rack an pinion system as the pump is a integrated part. The vehicle has less than 15,000 miles.

I went in to have a routine oil change and found out that I needed to replace my rack and pinion. My Jeep is a 2015 Grand Cherokee with less than 45,000 miles. The primary use of the vehicle is just getting back and forth to work and it has never been driven off of a paved road. This is not a failure that should be incurred this early on in the Jeeps life with an owner that is only driving it casually.

Dealer told me I have a slow power steering leak with rack and pinion steering. Seems to be a common issue with this model and year vehicle that has potential safety impacts for potential fire, yet I don't show this as a recall affecting my vehicle.
The rack and pinion steering is leaking at 75,000 miles. After being qouted 2600 dollars for the fix, I did research and found that most other Jeep owners are experiencing this problem in low mileage Jeeps also. Contacted Jeep with no response. The issue has been noted to cause the Jeeps to become unresponsive and dangerous as steering becomes useless.
2016 Jeep grand cherrokee was making left 90 degree turn at approx 5 mph on an a non-public city airport access road, hit a small golf cart and stopped. Damage to the golf cart was minor and consisted of broken plastic parts. Visible damage to the Jeep was a dented license plate. The front wheel were frozen in the left turn position and could not be moved. The vehicle was towed to a Jeep dealer, who reported that the rack and pinion assembly was frozen and needed replacement. They said they could not disassemble or repair the part. The cost of the replacement part was $5,020. 00. The vehicle has 33,040 miles and is well maintained, with no prior accidents.
Rack and pinion sterling defect need to be replaced 12500 miles only on car.
Vehicle has less than 60,000 miles and was informed that power steering resivoir is low due to a leak in the boot of the rack and pinion steering assembly. Cost of repair would be approximately $2000. This part should last much longer than 60,000 miles. Driven very lightly as only 60,000 miles in 6 years to start having such issues.
It's been since may 2018 with in/out visits to the dealership for a constant problem. My steering wheel wobbles over 70mph on my 2015 Grand Cherokee wk2 high altitude, all standard features. This started after 26k miles and now I have 39k miles. I've researched dozens of forums and read through tsbs with no solution. I had the dealer replace the tires, twice, with michelin premier ltx 20inch tires, several road force tests, high speed balances, several alignments, rack and pinion replaced, front wheel bearing assemblies replaced, all new shocks and after alllllllllll of that, she still wobbles!!!!!!! the dealer has thrown their hands up and will not help me any further. The steering wheel only wobbles between 70-80mph. Another customer's wheels were placed on my car and tested with same issue. Privately owned alignment centers also confirmed a spot on alignment and wheel balance. All bushings appear to be intact. The Jeep is not safe to drive on the highway.
33k milage took my Jeep in to get the routine oil change, the shop found the rack and pinion assembly was completely broke and the front struts were completely blown out at 33k miles this should not happen. The repairs cost $3,700. 00. If Jeep knows there was a problem in 2012 they should have taken care of it. Betty / thornton, colorado.
Front rack and pinion steering boot leaking. Car bought new and has 59,000 miles. On line reports many other vehicles with same problem. Safety issue found on yearly inspection.
Driving at highway speeds, 55 to 70 mph the steering wheel will violently shake back and forth and the car will jerk from left to right. I took the vehicle to the dealership and was informed the power steering rack and pinion would need complete replacement. The estimate with a new 4 wheel alignment is over 1900 dollars. This Jeep is driven by my wife, has never been off road and has only 33,000 miles on it. A service technician told me this is a very common problem and they see many Jeeps where the rack needs replacement. I called two other dealerships and was told this is a problem area on 2012 Grand Cherokees. I was also told they redesigned the rack a couple of years ago because of this problem. This repair should be covered and recalled as a dangerous manufacturing defect.
My 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee had low levels of power steering fluid after replacing the power steering pump, so I returned the vehicle to the dealership and was informed the power steering rack and pinion would also need complete replacement. The Jeep had 80k miles.
At 40 thousand miles the rack and pinion need replaced. There is a leak coming from this part. I was notified during an oil change that the repair isn't normal and would cost $1,200. There is no damage to the vehicle. Steering is a little whiny now but according to other owners, this is the start of the failure.
Having the Jeep services for a broken chair rail ($1200!) and they told me the power steering reservoir was empty and the the power steering pump, reservoir, rack and pinion and hoses will need to be replaced for another $2350! I've read that this vehicle has a history of this and has created a fire hazard. This car is not 3 years old and has had fuel pump, water pump, rear latch lock and multiple recalls on other items. Dealership is raking in the cash; it very upsetting for someone who really wants to buy american made vehicles!.
Could hear power steering pump whine. Looked at power steering fluid level and it was low. Crawled underneath and found fluid dripping off of rack'n pinion and signs of fluid blowing all over under carriage. Took to dealer and reported the problem on July 1st.

The rack and pinion on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is completely worn out and makes considerable amounts of noise when decreasing in speed. Car has 47,000 miles and before my warranty was up at 36,000 I took the vehicle in for rear end inspection and they found "no problems. " this is fraud, and now I have to pay $1350 to have the rack and pinion replaced.

Complete sudden loss of steering without any warning symptoms even at 1 mph is a safety defect. It could have as easily happened from hitting a pothole at 70 mph, killing me and causing great damage. I have the car serviced regualrly at the dealer since.
