The steering shaft spline stripped. Steering wheel turns freely in both directions without moving the front wheels. Happened backing out of in driveway thankfully instead of the interstate we were heading for. The car is as oem as can be and no modification or off-road driving has been done. The primary driver goes to/from school and store. This type of failure should never occur, the consequences of this failing steering column are deadly.

2 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/16/2019

I have been dealing with this Jeep Grand Cherokee issue for years now. At one point there was a recall on the ignition switch and it was replaced at the local Chrysler dealer. The issue I have is identical to the one in the link attached. Up until a few weeks ago, I lived with it. Now the issue has turned dangerous because it also affects the ability to brake and turn. When the brakes seemed compromised, I took the Jeep in for repair but they were not able to duplicate the issue. I picked it up last week from the repair shop and today it was the power steering that went out along with the usual dash panel function going out. I realize that this is an older Jeep but it seems Chrysler should still be responsible for the vehicle safety. . Read more...

7 Steering Column problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/07/2015

Turning the steering wheel to the right and turning on the signal for the right the horn beeped. Stopped immediately and didn't happen again for several days. Turn the signal on for a right turn the horn beeped longer. This didn't happen every time I used the signal and it is only on a right turn. Several days later I turned the lights on in fog and the horn sounded for several seconds and would not stop. It finally stops on its own. I parked in the parking lot and the horn continued to blow by itself for several seconds even after the lights and car was turned off. It continued to blow at intervals and I had to have the horn unhooked to stop the blowing. I have owned Jeeps for a very long time and would never have considered any other vehicle. I am now reconsidering this option. I do feel this is a defective part since in a very short time I have discovered two others just by talking about the problem to them. I am sure we are not the only three to have this issue. Thank you. Judy coomer I own three Jeeps, 1984, 1993 and 2005 and have never had this problem with either of the other two. I have spoken with two other people in the past several days experiencing the same issue with a 2007. I feel this is a defect in the manufacturing of this part and should be a recall by Jeep. The lights, airbag, wipers all are in the steering wheel column. I would like some advice from the manufacturer as to the solution for this issue.

8 Steering Column problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

While accelerating onto curve of freeway entrance ramp, felt a slight jerk or pop on the steering wheel then lost all control of steering wheel. Steering wheel did not control car, so I veered straight off ramp and into grass/plant area. I did take a video showing how the steering wheel was spinning freely around in circles. Very fortunate this did not occur 30 seconds later when I would have been on the freeway and losing contol of steering. I had the car towed to the dealership and after inspection, was told that the lower steering column shaft broke loose from upper shaft, causing steering wheel to spin freely. When shaft broke loose it also caused damage to the clockspring. The car was repaired by the dealership, however based on the seriousness of this defect and potentially fatal results, wanted to make sure this was communicated as the car is only 14 months old with only 18,200 miles on it. . . . Updated 01/23/15.

10 Steering Column problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/15/2007

The airbag light came on a few weeks ago. I took my vehicle in to find out what the issue was. A clock spring had broken in the driver's side airbag, rendering the airbag undeployable. The original estimate for repair was $309+ tax. The mechanic tried to repair but realized that the only way to fix the airbag is to replace the entire steering column at a cost of $1800. I called Chrysler to report this issue to them, and they refused to help even though it was their design that rendered this repair of an important safety feature so expensive it is unconscionable.

12 Steering Column problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/22/2007

Problem. . . Driving down the road or stopped at light or in the middle of a turn or on expressway. . . It would shut off without warning, sometime it would restart immediately, sometimes not!!!. . . Extremely dangerous situations developed, which I was lucky!!! 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4. 0 , 6 cyl. . . . Spent 6 months doing repairs/ replacement parts and many ,many dollars spent tracking down part after part. Using diagnostics machine to determine faulty part. . . Problem was the power control module ( pcm or ecu same part) was defective and either was misreading codes or giving out bad codes to parts (like to the crank shaft position sensor or the coil, or the 01 or 02 ox sensors or it goes on and on and on). Not sure how it works but you get my drift. Since signing up with cnet. Com, have found many people across America with the same issue on Jeep with different years (1994/2000) and models. To search. . . Look up Jeep stalls or Jeep fixed and you will see other topics and forums around that topic and you will also see where the manufacture doesn't know how to address the problem either. Another possible recall issue is the screws that hold the pcm might be too long and are grounding out the unit after paint wears off on firewall. . . Important to read all articles and different forums!!! . . . Is a must lastly. . . Instead of replacing pcm's, is it possible to have the pcm re flashed under recall??? I'm stretching, but maybe electrical power storms and rain is causing parts to defect??? lastly. . . Jeep parts consists of module power units that work or don't work but the pcm reads the codes and adjusts the workable of the motor. . . Another issue is that there are several issues that will shut down the motor besides the fore mentioned parts. . . Ie. . . Asd relay, the security system, door locks, steering column, the electronic key, the back windshield wiper. . .

18 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/18/2004

This has been happening since the beginning of purchase. When I'm stopped and beginning a turn with the steering wheel, the wheel will make a grind and/or squeaking noise. I've notified the dealership when I've taken it in for repair, but apparantly, it never happens when it's there at the shop. The first time I reported it, they oiled the steering column, that was all, and; the noise continued.

19 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/01/2004

Steering noise and popping.

20 Steering Column problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/20/2002

The steering column vibrates when turning the wheels (usually at lower speeds). Took it to the dealer 3 times, first time they replaced the hoses, second time replaced the steering column, and the third time they stated this was a problem with a piece of metal in the column that vibrates due to a small gap within the steering column. I was told this would be a few months, however, 6 months have now passed and I still have the problem. One side note, it seems to do it less in colder weather!.

21 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/01/2001

When a right turn is made the steering column makes a sound like the horn is blowing. First reported in 2001 while car was under warranty and dealer said he couldn't reproduce it. Reported it 3 more times and dealer said he couldn't hear it. Dealer claimed he would not disassemble steering column because, if no problem could be found, Chrysler would not reimburse them for this labor intensive work. Problem has gotten progressively worse, particularly when air temp is above 85 degrees.
