The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact stated that the failure recurred intermittently with the engine off and while in park. The contact owns a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 45 mph on normal road conditions, the engine stalled intermittently. The vehicle restarted after several attempts and the engine and brake warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The indicators remained lit until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic eight times, but the failure could not be duplicated. Recently, the dealer replaced the core wires, spark plugs, hoses, caps, and rotor distributor. The vehicle was also repaired according to NHTSA campaign id number 02v053000 (power train:automatic transmission;lever and linkage:floor shift). The failure mileage was 90,000 and current mileage was 103,000.

Shift interlock cable became disconnected, enabiling the shfit lever to be moved from the park position without depressing brake pedal. Also the key can be removed from vehicle without selecting park with the shift lever.

The consumer placed the vehicle in the park position, as she stepped out of the vehicle, she noticed the engine was running. The vehicle rolled back in reverse until it hit a parked vehicle by a gas tank. Prior to the accident, the vehicle had recall b02 performed, which was the floor shift. The consumer requested that daimler Chrysler provide the consumer with a payment for the insurance estimate. Scc.
The consumer states that he had taken his vehicle in to the dealer, and explained that he would place the vehicle in park, and it still moved backwards. The consumer was told that he needed a new transmission and was given a price of 2600. 00 along with another 127. 00 for the diagnostic cost. The consumer then recieved a recall notice from the dealer, which was to install a secondary detent system onthe vehicles floor shifter. (when the shifter isn't placed fully into the park position and leaves the engine running, the vehicle may unexpectedly move rearward after seeming to be stable)-could injure those in and/or near the vehicle. Nhtsa # 02v053000. The consumer demands the monies spent on the repair be returned.
Consumer appallaed at business ethics of dealership during linkages recall repair.
On two occasions the consumer has received notifications concerning a recall regarding a secondary detent system on the vehicles floor shifter. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer who explained that the vehicle was not apart of the recall and that no modifications were needed.
