1 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/10/2020

My 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo makes a grabbing feel or noise when it down shifts from 2nd to 1st so not sure if it has something to do with the trans. Or maybe the breaks I feel it has something to do with the transmission but can't seem to get any answers except yum that's normal for the Jeep I call bull**** but happens when it is in motion slowing down and turning mostly.

2 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/01/2020

I have took my vehicle for a shifter recall. They did a programming they said and that it should have fixed the problem. I explained to Chrysler capital about how my vehicle would shift into neutral after throwing itself into other gears. I would have to turn off the vehicle and begin driving again. Now my vehicle hardly drives and the transmission makes a loud cracking noise. This recall made my transmission go out.

3 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/23/2019

I purchased my Grand Cherokee with 30k miles. Before I even made my first payment, the transmission was replaced through manufacturers warranty. Days after driving it off the lot, it would slam down through gears during deceleration and jump/jerk when shifting up. A loud metal thud accompanied these jolts between gears every time. Fast forward to today, and 25k miles later (Jeep has 55k total) and this problem appears to be returning. Random jolts and jerky shifts during acceleration and deceleration, specifically when going up or down a slope or when getting back on the gas to accelerate when driving. The deceleration and downshift between gears is so jarring sometimes when slowing down that myself and passengers will have our heads bang forward and seatbelt catch the weight of our bodies. The thud noise is coming back randomly as well when this happens. With only 5k miles left on manufacturer power train warranty, I'm nervous that having it's 3rd transmission in less than 60k miles is going to be a future problem again not covered by warranty. I feel very unsafe when driving what was supposed to be my dream vehicle and the largest loan in my life other than purchase of house. Since the day I left the lot it has felt uncomfortable driving and causes me anxiety because of the way it shifts and makes noises. The hard jerks and slamming downshifts have almost caused multiple accidents and I honestly hate having to drive this vehicle. (I have only owned it for 16 months. ) the date I selected was when I purchased vehicle, problem has been ongoing since then.

5 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/08/2018

Transmission problems. The transmission shifts are pronounced, cause the SUV to jerk and feel jumpy. This condition is sporadic, and can change based on mode - normal, eco off, sport . Besides causing a choppy ride, the condition is concerning because some shifts that cause the vehicle to jerk are accompanied by a banging noise that may be a r a precursor to gear failure.

6 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/09/2018

Intermittent stalling usually during deceleration. Four times in the past 3-months. Twice while slowing for a right turn, once while slowing on a downgrade. The vehicle can only be restarted if in park forcing the need to come to a complete stop and shifting into park. The only indication is the loss of engine noise, power steering and confirming using the tachometer. This condition could lead to a rear collision on a busy road way, a roadway with no breakdown lane or trapped in a center land of a multilane road. Prior to the current stalling repairs per r09 / NHTSA 15v-115 were implemented. The repairs may not been effective.

8 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/20/2015

After owning my Jeep Grand Cherokee for about 6 months I was driving on the highway and my car would not accelerate faster than 40 mph, the rpms were going up but no matter how hard I pressed on the gas the car would not go any faster. I took it to the dealership and was told it was a computer issue and they reprogrammed the computer. Again a few months later the car did the same thing while driving on the street, not accelerating faster than about 20mph and the rpms going up. The car also started downshifting hard when coming to a stop. Once I started driving after coming to a stop the car also felt like it was shifting hard into gear. I brought the car back to the dealership and again the complaint could not be duplicated. So a computer update was done again and the problem seemed ok for a few months again. The problem is not a constant one so duplicating it will be hard. It is random and does not seem to happen at any specific time. It happened twice while I was on the highway and is a safety issue if I can not accelerate, especially when I am changing lanes. In total I have brought my car in 4 times within 2 years for the same problem. Once or twice I was told that they did feel the hard shifting when coming to a stop or accelerating after stopping but all that was done was a computer update. My fear is having an accident on the highway if I can not accelerate. Sometimes when coming to a stop it shifts so hard it almost sounds like a hard popping noise. At this point I do not know what to do, my car has 25,000 and is now 26 months old, the warranty will expire in about 10 mos or 36,000 and then I am sure the problem will be found & it will probably be the transmission and cost me several thousand dollars!! I contacted Jeep corp office 800-992-1997 and was told try to open a starcase so the "special mechanics" can look at it, why aren't all the mech special??.

11 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

I began to get a whining noise from the transmission. I brought the car in for service and recommendation were to service the transmission and the noise went away. Just recently the whining noise returned and now when shifting from first gear into second it is a hard shift not fluid and smooth. The service station who I have been going to for over 30 years is a very reputable and a life long friend. He found no codes from the on board computer and his recommendations were to have the car checked by and Jeep dealer for more complete diagnoses as they have equipment that might help with the problem but his diagnosis was probable bad transmission. From the start this car always had a shift problem from first to second. Many times there was a delay in from park to drive and had brought the car in for service while under warranty but was told there were no codes nor anything wrong with the transmission. I have been told by my mechanic the Jeeps are known for bad transmission but never got any service calls.

16 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/04/2005

I bought new a 2005 Grand Cherokee limited 2wd 4. 7 at approx. 3k miles it seems to have transmission problems shifting into 3rd gear and a shuddering/ missing when cruising at any speed. Sometime when you stop there is a thank you can feel. The dealership I purchased it at doesn't want to service it because I submitted a bad service survey to Chrysler. A dealership in the next town told me they would need to replace the transmission. I waited one week for parts to come in then took it to the dealer which told me all it need was a update to the computer which had already been done by the selling dealer. I took it to the next biggest dealership which has worked with me on the transmission problems having it in the shop a week at a time a least twice. They replace seals in the transmission but it hasn't fixed the problem and it seems the more mile I put on it the worse it gets. Now I sometime have a loud roaring noise the sounds like a busted muffler coming from the transmission area.

18 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/09/2003

When accelerating from a stopped position, vehicle feels sluggish, as though it is starting from second or third gear. When stopping, a loud clunking noise is heard. Rough and erratic shifting is felt as the transmission downshifts. With a vehicle with less than 27,000 miles on it, the transmission does not seem to be working normally (at least as normal as any other automatic transmissions I have had over the years). I have read several other complaints posted that express similar problems, but have not seen any resolution from Jeep other than telling their customers that this is normal operation. This troubles me and does not give me much confidence in their ability to troubleshoot the problem. I want a record of the problem for future reference.

20 Noises During Shifting problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/11/2003

1. Fuel injector failed causing the engine to misfire and operate on only 5 out of 6 cylinders. 2. In the same cylinder (#6) rod broke, causing engine to blow and need replacement at only 42,000 miles. 3. Power steering pump almost fell off the vehicle. (most likely due to improper installation after engine rebuild). 4. Brakes constantly squeak or make grinding noise when pressure is applied. When temperatures are below 50 degrees, a high pitched whinning noise is heard from underneath the vehicle. Can only be heard when traveling under 45 mph - due to road noise masking the sound. (multiple dealers have not been able to determine what the problem is nor be able to fix it, so constantly whines). 5. Fuel gauge fluctuates when 3/4 full (drops to empty and fuel light turns on, then returns to normal reading. Will continue to do this until tank is 1/4 full). Told this is a problem with the fuel sensor. 6. Transmission is occasionally rough (jerky shifting between 1st and 2nd gears).

Failure Date: 05/01/2001

When shifting gears the transmission makes a lot of noise. Have had the vehicle in twice, was told that they had another Jeep on the rack with the same problem was waiting for the manufacture rto tell them what to do next. After repeated calls to find out the status of the other Jeep, was told that they had replace the whole transmission on that Jeep and did not fix the problem. So after many calls am told that Chrysler is working on the problem. Also, the Jeep backs off a lot when at 70 miles per hour. Wrote the manufacture, but have not heard from them.

24 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/25/2001

I purchased/ leased a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3/24/01. The day after I drove it off the lot, I noticed a problem with the transmission. The transmission, when down-shifting from 2nd to 1st gear shifted very, very hard- so hard that there was a loud thumping/banging noise that was quite audible and distracting, and also this abnormal shifting caused the car to lurch forward. I immediately called the dealer to express my concern over a new vehicle with such a rough transmission. I was assured by the service dept. That all the new electronic transmissions started off rough the 1st thousand miles, and that it needed to break in. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, although I was very skeptical; never in my life having experienced such a horribly rough transmission- esp. On a brand new vehicle. After 1000 miles, there was no improvement, and I took the vehicle in to be evaluated. I was assured by the mechanic that all the Grand Cherokees transmissions are like this- it's a build up of the hydrolic fluids or something. I once again believed them (not really) and went on my way. The vehicle continued to do this, the sound getting very loud and quite startling at times while in traffic. It also is quite embarassing with passengers in the car who also have become quite startled by the loudness and sheer force of the lurching. I took my vehicle in a second time for evaluation only to be told, nothing was wrong. It is my feeling that this is a severe defect of some sort. In all my years of driving, I have never experienced such problems- except maybe from a manual transmission that bucked. I am planning to take my car in yet a third time and demand the problem be resolved, or I will be invoking my rights under the lemon laws. In light of the recent problems with Grand Cherokees, and their shifting into gear while idling, I cannot say that I am surprised. My vehicle also when shifted into reverse, sometimes makes a very loud clunking, rough shift. Please advise.

25 Noises During Shifting problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/26/1999

When starting the vehicle and shifting from park to drive the transmission did not feel like it engaged. After not engaging the vehicle was put in park and shifted into drive again. The transmission still did not feel like it engaged. Not being sure I started to apply the gas with no forward movement. Suddenly when the rpm's reached about 1500-2000 rpm's the vehicle engaged into drive causing my vehicle to hit the parked car in front of it. Only minor damage was done since the vehicle to the front was far enough away and I was able to stop just soon enough to only tap the forward vehicle. Since the vehicle was new there have been loud banging noises coming from the rear while stopping, after stopping and releasing the brake or without the air conditioning, while stopped and the rpm's fall below 500 rpm's. The bang sounds as if there is tension being released somewhere causing the vehicle to "lurch forward". Shifting the gear selector (from park to drive and park to reverse etc) is also creating a loud bang and very rough shift, while causing the car to again seem like it wants to "take off". To date the dealer either says he can not duplicate or what he does hear is normal.
