Whining noise coming from back of 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee; removed drive shaft between transfer case and rear diff-found u joints on each end slightly tight; had new u joints installed (had replaced by a custom shop as Jeep driveshafts and u joints are one component and cost in the $1200 range to replace)-my u joints are now serviceable and can be changed at any shop; problem still existed after repair, removed transfer case-no problems there; opened up rear diff and found pinion bearing pre-tension had been overtightened (my mechanic says this was done at the factory as this case has never been opened up prior to this)-gears were still okay but bearings showed signs of stress so changed out all bearings in diff and re-set pinion tension; problem now solved-my out of pocket cost - $1300. This vehicle has 53000 miles on it.

My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited w/42,000 miles. Yes . Not a typo . 42,000, orignal owner & "scared to death" to drive this SUV. I have alot of the already problems, that have been reported. Had to pay many, w/my own cash. This SUV schould have came in 1 color "lemon yellow". It is an accident watng to happen. The recent problem is now I have no a/c-heat or defroster. Ths is due, to failure of the automatic temp control to work. I t started 1st by intermittently working, till now not working at all, this is just 1 more, to the list , of many other problems. I don't think that it is an coincidence that all my issue have happenned, almost exactly, in the order, of all the other complaints. I can't undestand how a company can get away w/this. This new problem can cost up to $2000, if it is, like previous reported problems, happens to be the "blend doors". As a handicapped driver I drive less than 4,000 miles a year. This is the only auto I drive, thus the many, many probs have yet to raise thier head. I have read almost all complaints(too many to read)
this SUV schould be a "total recall, I have never heard more complaints & problems, in my life, for any automobile. This SUV schould be studied & reseached, on "how not to build an automobile. Just read the many complaints here & on the internet. We are not making this stuff up. I don't know how they stayed in business as long as they did. We, the taxpayers, bailed them out. Who is bailing out all the owners, of this "death-trap"?
if that is not absurd enuff, many problems could have been repaired, by Jeep & still can. What is the purpose, of nhsta, if not to intervene? you have all the complaints. Hundreds of them. You have them posted, yet, we taxpayers/owners safety, has been at risk ever since this SUV was driven out of the showroom. How did you not make a recall on the rotor/brakes issue which was reported at 3,000 miles? I am so frustrated. Is braking problems not a safety issue?
please, help us!.

I was pulling up to the curb at a shopping center and my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland suddenly jumped the curb, knocked down a large concrete planter and took out a light pole. The brake would not override the sudden acceleration. Luckily, no one was on the sidewalk. This information was reported to the local Jeep dealer and to Chrysler corporation but they are not admitting their is a problem. The damage to my Jeep has been fixed but now I am afraid to drive it.

In March, 2005, with 59,000 miles, my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland, which I purchased new in August 2002, needed a new rear differential. A replacement was also needed at 80,000 (July 2006), 86,000 (March 2007), and 98,000 (April 2008). As of this writing, the dealer has had the vehicle for over 3 weeks. In replacing first the bearings, then the gears, and then the "entire rear end", they have been unable to solve the problem. Attempts to contact Chrysler have been unsuccessful. No one at the 800 numbers can offer any solutions. I have an extended warranty, so the repairs have been covered, minus my $100 deductible. But, I don't think the number of repairs is questionable. I've found a number of sites with other individuals reporting the same problem on this particular body style/model. Perhaps there is a wide spread problem. .

On several occasions after I have driven my vehicle in heavy rain on wet roads or went through a car wash then parked it, when I go to leave the area it will take off (accelerate) as soon as it is in gear, my foot is not on the gas it just takes off, sometimes it will just stall after it does this other times it keeps running and I am able to control it. Fortunately I have not had an accident because of this, but it is quite a scary experience. Most recent experience was after I had been to a car wash.

2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited, 4. 7 engine, vibration at highway speeds between 60 and 75 mph. Dealership has replaced both driveshafts which helped some. Goodyear replaced on goodyear fortera hl tire which was out of round. This helped some as well. Still there is a vibration (shudder) throughout the vehicle at the speeds mentioned prior.
Dt
consumer stated while driving there was a loud noise, then 2 bolts broke from the steering column, this caused loss of steering. The vehicle was towed, the mechanic stated there was also another bolt located on the inside of the steering column that broke as well. Two Jeep dealers said they had never heard of this happening before. Both cv boots are broken and the brakes had to be repaired.

Sole owner of 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2wd with less than 39,000 to date. Vehicle has been treated with care and it has received regular maintenance service from local Jeep dealerships, excluding a few oil changes. Rear carrier, pinion and axle bearings replaced at 32,339 miles (07-08-03) due to significant whining noise in rear of vehicle, within a month after driving from California to north carolina. Noise returns in September 2004. At 38,620 miles on 09-28-04, same local dealership advises that bearings are bad again and has offered goodwill warranty repair. Although dealership is paying for 2nd repair, I am concerned because the vehicle needed a bearing job after so few miles and then needs another 6,000 miles later. I'm concerned that there is something more serious wrong with the driveline, which is causing the bearing problem, and could result in a serious failure. The vehicle received a routine service of the rear differential at the local dealership in California on 01-18-02 at 24,643 miles. Could this have started the problem? the vehicle has had other repairs (a/c condenser coil, power seat assembly, starter, fuel pump, brake master cylinder, ), some which seem somewhat unreasonable, but this one seems extremely unreasonable.

In April of 2002 I purchased a used 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a local dealer because it had only 14000 miles on it. I have had to replace the brake rotors and pads due to vibration 2 times. At 46000 miles I put new tires on this to quiet a noise problem. Now at 65000 miles the noise is extreme coming from drive train. I was told today there is a defect in the ring/pinion gear assemblies used on the 99/00 model year Jeeps. But there has yet to be a recall regarding this condition. I am very disappointed in the durability of the product, as it should have lasted far longer than 65000 miles, especially for the amount paid for it! hopefully Chrysler will take responsibility for poor engineering and design quality. But I doubt it. The roaring and howling noise is so loud that you can not hear others talking at road speed, and I am greatly concerned about the safety of the vehicle, but due to the great cost of it, I cannot trade it or afford to repair it because I am on disability!!!!!!!!!!.
4 wheel drive failure on snowy incline vehicle came out of 4 wheel low , lost control of vehicle and vehicle slid backwards at least 75 to 100 ft. Into an embankment. Prior to this failure, I was coming up snowy driveway the night before and had vehicle in 4 wheel low and vehicle would not make it up hill and slid backwards on me, at that time I thought it was due to my driving however the next day it occurred again and realized that vehicle had kicked out of 4 wheel drive and only rear wheels working. Premature wearing of front brake pads and rotors causing vehicle to vibrate, shimmy and squeal when appling brakes. Dt.
Premature loss of front and rear differential bearings.
Recall 98 v 006 000/temporary space saver: front axle overheated due to temporary spare tire. Manufacturer was notified, and informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under that recall. Consumer found recall 98v006, but his vehicle was not included. Vent tube from the front differential was spiiting burning oil into the engine compartment.
When shifting vehicle in reverse it makes a loud noise and vehicle jerks. Dealership replaced tranfer case twice, and rebuiltd the driveshaft. The vehicle would not start due to fuel pump failure. Driver side wiper blade was worn out. Rear differntial was worn, also the rotors were replaced, the fule injection was serviced cleaned the throttle body, power steering fluid was serviced, tires were rotated, pinion bearings, front axles seals replaced.
Vehicle would vibrate severely when applying brakes at 35-40 mph, and more severely at higher speeds. Vehicle has been to the dealer on eleven occasions, and the problem has reoccurring. The engine makes noise. There was a clunk noise from drive line to reverse. The vehicle would not hold in park. Consumer stated that both inner and outer tie rod failed and were replaced. While driving at 85 mph the vehicle makes a growling noise. Transmission makes clunking noise when putting in gear. The steering wheel vibrates while going over pumps due to front brake rotors failure, also the steering shock was replaced.
Defective design of the front and rear differential which makes a "whining noise" and cause the metal to be shaved off. Dealer had to replace both differential. Front and rear differentials were replaced. The fuel leak was caused by fuel pump module failure.

Driveshaft and yoke are defective in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is a known problem to Chrysler and the refuse to fix it. I paid over $39000 for my vehicle, and I'm convinced that it is not safe at highway speeds. There are several class action lawsuits underway against Jeep for this same problem. They have even set up complaint forums in some automobile review web sites. I would appreciate any help you may be able to provide in this matter. Chrysler knows of the problem but after 4 service attemps they cant fix it.
