Failure Date: 05/25/2012

Enough issues that a class action suit in new jersey for this exact matter is in process. Faulty sunroof rear drain tubes become pinched, looped, or otherwise unable to drain away water. When water comes forward (as in braking on the freeway and narrowly averting an accident) water comes down and through the a pillars and overhead console, and other areas of headliner. A bit startling when traveling in rush hour traffic on the freeway. After reading about the countless stories of other owners experiencing the same thing, I began contacting dealerships including the out of area dealership where the vehicle was bought used in December 2011. It became apparent that there would be no relief and I would bear most if not all of the cost of the repair of this design flaw that can create very unsafe driving conditions and cause accidents.

The sunroof/moonroof does not set appropriately when closed and causes water leak and subsequent water damages. This also leads to the drainage lines to clog up and causes water to backup into sensitive electrical components within the roof. 18 Sun Roof problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/07/2005

We were driving our 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited down an open highway (no trees, no cars around, etc. ) at about 65 mph, and the sunroof exploded. It sounded like a gunshot, extremely loud. Fortunately, we did not have the interior roof open, and the glass that shattered did not get inside the vehicle. We explained the situation to the Jeep dealership, and they said the repair of our sunroof would not be covered under the warranty since they had never heard of this happening before. We noticed on the NHTSA web site (via another complaint) that this had happened before to someone else, and the scenario is almost exactly the same -- same vehicle, same year. The other complaint shown on this site was logged February 2005.

The vehicle is having the same problems as indicated in the recall again. Also, the dealer suggested the automatic control of the sunroof assembly which failed to work properly was related to the ongoing transmission problem as well, but no further repairs were made.

20 Sun Roof problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/05/2005

While driving a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee on i495n going about 65 mph with the sun roof fully closed, the sun roof glass exploded, showering glass throughout the car. Initially I thought someone threw a rock and struck the window, but we were not near an overpass, nor were trucks or other cars closs enough to toss a rock up in order to hit the moonroof glass. A rock was not found in the car upon inspection. The local Jeep dealer said that it must have been a rock that hit the window and therefore would not be covered under the warranty. I think the window just failed from either stress or from a manufacturing defect. . . But how do I prove it?.

23 Sun Roof problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

The engine revved at a very high rpms when starting. When changing gears it made a loud clung sound and wanted to lunge into that direction. The vehicle has never shifted properly between gears. It was almost like it was slipping, and then finding the right gear. It was not a smooth transmission either. Since I purchased the vehicle a little over 1-1/2 years ago the car has been in the shop more than 15 times. The dealers could not find the cause of the problem. I had to replace a transmission sensor, 02 sensor, sun roof, rear end, and cd player. The heater blend door had to be replaced , which didn't sound expensive, but the fix was to remove the entire heater plenum and replace the broken door, stop and drive assembly. Cost $890. 00.
