6 Windshield problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure of heating system components - blend doors. Regardless of temperature selected and fan output, design flaw in blend doors of heating system can result in no heat including no way to defrost / defog the front windshield, impeding driver's ability to see in cold weather. Faulty plastic parts break. Apparently this is a widespread problem with many Jeep models / years but no recall ever issued. Cost in excess of $1,500 to repair estimated.

7 Windshield problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/10/2010

Total loss of heat on the passenger side. Now the drivers side has no heat either. I live in canada and we need the heat to work or the vehicle is totally useless if you can't see out the windshield! Jeep dealers are aware of the problem, but won't fix it by recall. They expect you to pay anywhere from 800-1500 for them to fix it and a loss of your Jeep for at least 3 days. This is nuts!.

11 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The driver's blend door, and the passenger's blend door are not working, causing only cold air to come in on passenger and on driver side causing fog build up on the front windshield which prevents drivers vision and could cause a major accident. 13 Windshield problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/05/2009

Same common problem that has occurred on thousands of Chrysler/Jeep Grand Cherokee's. The blend door actuators that regulate hot and cold air fail so that heat stops working entirely. This also means the defrost stops working which is a major safety hazard when driving in wet and cold climates like the winter months in washington state. I recently drove over one of our mountain passes and could not see anything because it was snowing and I could not defrost the windshield. The repair costs $1600 at a Chrysler dealership.

14 Windshield problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/02/2009

The heater on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee only works approx. 25% of the time. The person I purchased it from said it only happened to her every so often, but that it had gotten worse. Since I've owned it, it has continued to get progressively worse. I'm concerned as winter is approaching and I'll need to see out the windshield and will need a heat defroster for it living here in nebraska. This is a long known problem and I'm shocked that Chrysler has not recalled this problem as it poses major safety implications. I've worked on cars for 15 years and have never heard of a heater going bad. As any mechanic out there, heaters don't go bad unless the whole heater core is bad, in which case I'd have a floor full of anti-freeze, which I do not have. My Jeep has not lost an ounce of fluid and runs at perfect operating temperature. It's an obvious electrical problem that Jeep should be held accountable for! there are numerous posts on numerous forms with hoards of people having the same problem that Jeep is charging $1500 to fix. Talk about a scam!!!.

15 Windshield problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/14/2009

The failure of the blender motor has left our Jeep without a windshield defroster/defogger. It only blows cold air and does not clear leaving visibility at zero. It doesn't work at all and now it is dangerous for myself and family to drive in our "family car". Nothing has been done to correct the problem because the dealership said it would be an $800-$1500 repair not covered by extended warranty that we purchased.

16 Windshield problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/08/2009

Air/ defroster won't blow out any air at all or will blow out hot air on one side of the Jeep and cold air out the other side even though the settings are the same. This will happen on and off until it breaks totally. I have had mine fixed 3 times 12/29/06, 03/28/07, 06/08/09. You cannot defog/ defrost the windshield properly and keep it clear when you are driving. Each time the dealer replaced the faulty part housing a 240213290, actuator 24029001, housing a 2428025 and again housing a 24028025. This is a known issue for the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and you can find a lot of talk on the internet about the cheap plastic parts that are used . You can find after market aluminum part but that's not what the dealer uses. This should not happen on a Jeep that only has 36,000 mile on it. . It's like its used alot. At $800. 00 a pop its starting to add up.

17 Windshield problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/02/2009

In cold weather, while using the windshield defroster, the hot air needed to keep frost off windshield suddenly changes to cold air on its own. This is very aggravating, and poses a great danger in not keeping the windshield clear. This happens very frequently. The dealership can make a repair, but the cost is prohibitive.

18 Windshield problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/23/2009

Hvac auto temperature system fails to maintain/sustain heat/cold. Occurs constantly when driven. Fails to keep windshield free of fog/ice which impairs vision. Not safe to drive.

19 Windshield problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/05/2009

The climate automatic climate control system has failed. One side blows cold air and the other warm air. The defrosters are ineffective, making it difficult to see when the windshield fogs up not to mention keeping the windshield deiced in bad driving conditions. Chrysler says the instrument panel must be removed in order to remove the heater assembly and fix the recirculation door and other components. They want $1200 to fix the heater! this is unbelievable!.

20 Windshield problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/05/2009

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland. Heater/defroster blowing cold air causing windshield to freeze up. I searched the complaints and cannot believe that there hasn't been a recall on this model vehicle. Has 60 minutes or the national media been apprised of the problems with this model vehicle? this is what I believe is a serious problem. Maybe not if you live in florida, but I live in connecticut. I only hope someone wakes up and addresses this issue!!!!.

21 Windshield problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/21/2008

The automatic blend doors to control the heat are broken and now only blows cold air out of my vents, my windshield now freezes up very easily and makes driving in freezing condition very dangerous.

22 Windshield problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/19/2008

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee has cold air blowing out on the drivers side and dash board but has hot air blowing out on passenger floor side. I cannot defrost my windshield and this has caused me to pullover while driving du to loss of visibility. I performed various test and found that when testing the azc the fault codes I get are 47 = left temperature door not responding and 54 = left temperature door travel too large. After reviewing several sites and talking with a few mechanics it seems to be that the blend doors are broken. I cannot believe how many failures about this I have read and there is no resolution. This is something that is a safety hazard especially here in the northeast. I am also a firefighter and in the middle of the night when I am called to a fire, accident with someone trapped, or some other emergency, I expect my vehicle to work properly and at the least provide heat to defrost for visibility. I cannot understand why this has not been addressed and why it is not considered a serious failure. In these times of poor economy you would expect corporations to treat loyal Jeep owners with consideration and address their issues. I would like an answer as to why this has not been addressed and what is required to repair it. I am also sick to hear that dealers are charging over $1000 to fix a design flaw. I would hope you consider this an important issue because I consider my defroster important when I respond to rescue someone out of a burning building or cut them out of a tangled vehicle. Time and life is of the essence to save and I dont need to worry about not being able to get heat to defrost my vehicle. Thank you .

23 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

Heater and defroster failed to work and nearly caused an accident as windshield would not defrost. Problem was diagnosed to be a blend door failure with failure codes 38,51,54 and 56.

24 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The heating works fine on the driver's side of the vehicle, but only cold air blows from the vents on the passenger side. My internet review suggests that it won't be long before I lose heat on the driver's side. This is apparently a very common problem with Jeep Grand Cherokees . . . And Chrysler knows it. The fix is very expensive . . . Blend air door actuator, or something like that. This will become a safety hazard when I am unable to defrost the windshield. Chrysler should recall and fix!.

25 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

My Jeep Grand Cherokee was operating perfectly, and apparently the "blend door" or something in the heating/cooling system is messed up. It starts blowing cold air for no reason some times, even to the point of fogging the windshield in cold weather.

26 Windshield problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/11/2008

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee has the hvac blend door problem. It blows nothing but cold air and I could not defrost or see out of the windshield while driving. I am sure this will result in death, injury, or property damage, as I do not have the $1500. 00 to repair and winter is here. A safety recall needs to be put into effect on these vehicles.

27 Windshield problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/16/2008

Heat and air worked fine. In October on a cold night I decided to use my heat and it blew cold air! this happens everytime I go to use my heat. It doesn't matter which vent it is blowing from the heat comes out cold. Has not fixed yet due to repair costs equaling over $1000. 00 and I cannot afford that at the time. Guess I will just have to drive around in -8 temperatures with ice on the inside of my windshield. . Thanks Jeep.

28 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with 151,400 miles. The events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of Jeep. Consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. To correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. According to the certified service department at the local Jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems.

29 Windshield problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/02/2008

My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited's heater control unit has become faulty. The heat does not work on any setting, and outside cold air comes into the cabin with zero control. This is making visibility very poor due to lack of defrosting the front windshield. I brought it to the dealer, and they informed me that it was due to a poor "design" from the factory. They told me that it was going to cost $1,766. 00 plus tax to repair this problem. I feel that there should be a recall issued to fix this problem seeing it becomes a safety risk due to poor visibility.

30 Windshield problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/20/2008

The contact owns a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When the contact started the vehicle, there was no heat coming from the vents located underneath the dashboard. The plastic vent doors are inoperable; therefore, cold air enters from the outside and freezes the windshield. The dealer stated that the repair would cost $1,800. The contact was informed that the failures were very common with his type of vehicle. In addition, snow and ice on the windshield will not melt due to the lack of heat coming from the vent underneath the dashboard. The failure mileage was 90,000. Updated 04-23-09 updated 04/30/09.

31 Windshield problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/17/2008

The heat does not work to control the defrost. When there is no frost it is hard to see out of the windshield. People say the blend doors are bad in the ac/heater box.

32 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/16/2008

Automatic climate control system acts erratically. Regardless of what settings are used, hot air will blow out one side while cold blows out the other. Sometimes which side is cold or hot will switch. I am filing this with the NHTSA because this is a major safety hazard. Because my automatic climate control doesn't work correctly, I have no windshield defroster. We have been receiving a lot of rain lately and the temperatures have been dropping. My windshield keeps getting foggy and I can't clear it. I have to pull over and wipe it off with a towel just to have it fog up again a few minutes later while I'm trying to drive. In the winter, the windshield will freeze over and it is very difficult to keep clear visibility. I can deal with being uncomfortable, but no defroster is a major problem. I have taken the vehicle into a dealership and have been told the cost of repair will be at least $1200. After researching online, it appears this is a very common problem. My fathers 99' Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problem. Jeep has identified a design flaw and has replacement parts, but they will not fix the problem under warranty unless the vehicle is still in warranty. This is a major design flaw and a major safety issue. Jeep didn't have a fix for this until the Jeep was well out of warranty. I put today's date as the incident date, but this has been happening for the past year. It is considerably worse now and the vehicle will be unsafe to drive this winter.

33 Windshield problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

Problem with visibility, defroster, both blend doors are broken, due to a defective part, there is no heat or defrosting on this vehicle. 2003 Grand Cherokee, I can not drive in cold temps with no heat, or defrost on windshield this is a safety hazard no help from Jeep, cost to determine what repair needed $100 & then repair is over $1000 and involves removing entire dash to replace these parts. Please assist Jeep owners with this very common defect.

34 Windshield problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

The air control system in the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee is faulty and fails. They already have a fix for this known faulty system but the repair does not fix the solution, it only delays it till it breaks again. Some aftermarket companies are making lots of money off of people who are trying to fix the problem permanently. The company should make the permanent repair a recall as the system can fail at an inopportune time and can lead to accidents when the windshield can fog up and the defroster will not work. The system can also fail such that the parts can fall into the fan motor and cause it to overheat possibly causing a fire. These vehicles are frequently used by families because of their size and steps should be taken to fix this problem once and for all.

35 Windshield problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/10/2008

I was driving on the highway and my drivers side window suddenly dropped into the door frame.
