36 Windshield problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/04/2008

While driving my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, in cold conditions, I found that the ac/heater output was insufficient to keep the windshield defrosted and defogged, resulting in extremely unsafe driving conditions. The fan works, but no air comes out. I researched the problem and found that it is due to a blend-door defect, common to that model/year Jeep. The vehicle has approx. 72,000 miles on it. I can't safely drive the vehicle in cold conditions until this is fixed. This repair is estimated to be between $900 -$1200. If this is such a widespread problem with this vehicle, I find it difficult to understand why there isn't a recall by deimler-Chrysler to repair this. How many deaths will it take before this gets the true attention it deserves?.

37 Windshield problem of the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/25/2008

A few weeks ago I purchased a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The mechanicals are fine. But there is a very pronounced reflection of the curved dash in the window which is exactly in the line of vision. It is extremely distracting, if not dangerously intrusive. It could be easily fixed if they decrease the size of the "gutter" around the curved area above the odometer. I have never seen such a pronounced reflection and in such a critical location, and it should be considered a severe design defect. It is pronounced both on sunny and cloudy days.

38 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/18/2008

Only cold air blows from the right side vents on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This began the end of this past winter. This problem affects the heat vents and the defrost vent, therefore causes a safety hazard, as the right side windshield ices up. From my searches, this appears to be a big problem, effecting many Jeep owners. My mechanic at the dealership, said it would be about a grand to fix. He also did not even ask me if I wanted to get it fix, almost like it was too time consuming and did not want me to get it fixed. So, therefore I have not had it fixed yet.

39 Windshield problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/21/2008

Cold air blowing from passenger side vents and windshield defroster regardless of control or temp settings. Driver side temp adjustments work properly, but passenger side and windshield defroster controls do not provide any heat. Windshield does not defrost, as temp mix is not functioning for passenger vents or for windshield defroster. Problem has not been resolved.

40 Windshield problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that water was leaking into the vehicle from the corners of the windshield. The dealer stated that the vehicle was involved in a crash; therefore, they could not repair a salvaged vehicle or one involved in a crash. The failure mileage was 19,000 and current mileage was 22,000.

41 Windshield problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

Blend doors on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee failed, making it impossible to see in most weather (instant fogged windshield w/no way to defog) and blowing cold air instead of hot. This cost over $1000 to fix, as removal and replacement of the doors is very time-consuming (whole dash must be removed).

42 Windshield problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/24/2007

No heat, poor defroster performance. Was told the problem is the heater blend door has failed and the cost is around $`1,800. 00 to repair. I started last winter with no head on the passenger side, now there is no heat on either side. Defrosters not properly clearing windshield.

43 Windshield problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/15/2007

I ran into what I thought was a simple heating problem with my 1999 Grand Cherokee. One day while driving down the road, my car simply stopped blowing hot air. After going to the dealership and spending nearly $600 to have some sort of solenoid replaced, I realize after pulling out of the lot that only my passenger side will blow hot air. I called the dealership back, and they told me that it was a problem with the blend doors, and will likely cost between $1,000 and $1,500 to fix. The repair requires a complete disassembly of the dash and steering column (around 10-12 hours for a full repair, according to the shop). I began to look around online to see what else could be done. To my surprise, nearly every Jeep message board was flooded with posts about this exact problem. The engineering of the part virtually ensures that it will fail; the calibration phase (every 20 or so start-ups) forces the plastic part to its limits and eventually breaks. Every dealership or auto repair shop that I contacted said that virtually every 1999 and newer Grand Cherokee has, or will have, this problem. The issue isn't paying for car repair; every car has problems that we as consumers will need pay to get fixed. The problem is that the engineering of this part causes it to fail, and now I'm stuck not being able to defrost my windshield in the winter, or now in springtime when it rains. There is no doubt in my mind that this has already, or will cause in the future, accidents from people not being able to see. Many people, including myself, would rather drive down the road while wiping the windshield with a rag. . . Than pay $1,500 to get it fixed. For many people, spending that $1,500 isn't even an option.

44 Windshield problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/12/2007

Heater/ac blend doors have detached from the shaft attached to the electric motor. The doors circulate conditioned air to the cab and are responsible for defrosting the windshield. The windshield no longer defrosts causing visibility issues during the winter months.

45 Windshield problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/27/2007

The failure im having is with the blend doors, from personal experience driving in cold climates your defrost blows cold air onto the windshield making it extremely unsafe to drive the vehicle in cold climates, I was fortunate enough that I didn't wreck or hit anybody else on the road, in my honest opinion this is a serious safety issue, if you think it isn't a problem mr. Chrysler I will personal drive to corporate h. Q. And hand you the keys and see for yourself, better yet why don't you put your family in the vehicle and go for a ride, and then you be the judge if this is a safety issue . . . My guess is you probably will.

46 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

Failure of blend doors in heater/defogger of vehicle. Jeep has known about these cheap parts for some time. The repair costs over $1000 because it is labor intensive, the complete dash panel has to be removed to access where the blend doors are located. The part costs are only about $150 at most! with the failure comes no warm/hot air from the heater, consequently no defrosting of the windshield. . . . . . . . . A severe visibility problem!! Jeep/Chrysler should be picking up all, or at least most of the cost of this repair. The original parts were cheaply made and are subject to wear out within only a few years. I recently had to pay for this repair myself. I could not do without the defroster during winter months. I had to pay for it out of my own pocket. I would like to see Jeep/Chrysler refund some of that cost to me, it would only be fair. Do a search on the internet, and you will see the numbers of these same failures for several Jeep year models.

47 Windshield problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/31/2007

I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with 84,400 miles. The events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of Jeep. Consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. To correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. According to the certified service department at the local Jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems.

48 Windshield problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

Heating/air conditioning components fail due to faulty components (blend doors, a component known to fail frequently) causing windshield fogging, poor visibility, lack of heat control.

49 Windshield problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

Blend doors broken on passenger side so no heat comes from dash. No use of defroster on passenger side. . This cant be good for the windshield with hot and cold air blowing on it. Repair costs are ridiculous for a factory problem that many people seem to have.

50 Windshield problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

April of 2006 I purchased my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland. About 2weeks after I purchased the vehicle, I noticed that the heater was not working properly. I took the vehicle back to the dealer where they informed me that the blend doors where broken or not working properly and it would cost approximately $1000 to fix and would not be covered under the extended warranty I purchased. I had to go through the various levels of management until they finally agreed to repair the vehicle. Just over 1 year later in August of 2007, I noticed that the ability to direct air to specific vents, stopped working, now the air just blows into the dash. I have gone back to the dealer, where they told me that the problem is the recirculate door, which was suppose to be changed when the blend doors where replaced, according to their "technical service bulletin", which was not done when the blend doors where replaced. The cost to do the repair would be approximately $1000 because they have to go through the same process as when the blend doors where replaced, except this time they will replace the recirculate doors. I really didn't realize the safety issue these components posed, until I drove in a snow climate. It was impossible to defrost the windshield. I literally had to reach forward wipe the windshield every couple of minutes while driving in order to see. It was extremely unsafe. These failed components are not considered luxury features, such as ac, it's considered a safety feature. There is an unusually high level of complaints of people experiencing the very same problem with their Jeep Grand Cherokees, and Chrysler has yet to address the problem. Defrosters are a safety feature. In cold climates you cannot operate the vehicle safely without them. When is the manufacturer held responsible for faulty parts that pose a safety risk? does something have to happen? does someone have to get injured, possibly worse? the dealerships are capitalizing the consumers are hurting.

51 Windshield problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/15/2007

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I noticed that my a/c blows mildly cold air. I recharged it thinking that it needed freon but that wasn't the case. This winter I noticed that my heat was not as hot as it should be. New england winters can get into the single digits and the lack of heat can make it almost impossible to defrost the windshield, making visibility very poor. After doing research on the web, I found out that my problem is all too common with Jeep cherokee owners. It seems that Jeeps have faulty blend doors made of cheap plastic and they almost all break. The repair requires removal of most of the dashboard and can lead to estimates leading anywhere between $1,000-$1,800. Daimler Chrysler is aware of the problem with the faulty devices and fails to accept the responsibility and post a recall on this issue.

Suddenly, the air conditioner suddenly throws out hot air.

58 Windshield problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

Normal operation of heating/cooling system. Now, after 28,000 miles, temperature will suddenly change in the cabin of the vehicle. The heat will suddenly cease and the visibility will be lost out the windshield. I believe it may have something to do with "blend door". When the windshield frosts up, we have to pull over and turn car off and wait for system to reset. Very dangerous, not safe, dealership estimates $1,500 to $2,000 to repair.

59 Windshield problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee
