Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Grand Cherokee based on all problems reported for the Grand Cherokee.

1 Defogger Controls problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/29/2008

Passenger side of car blows cold air from all vents, including the defroster vent. This is due to a broken blend door on the passenger side of the vehicle. This is most certainly a safety hazard due to the fact that I can only see out of half of my windshield when it is cold outside. Thousands are having this same "design flaw" problem while Chrysler sits by and does nothing. The cost to fix this common problem is ~$1000. If Chrysler is aware that this is a design flaw, yet continues to ignore the safety issues associated with it, then we have a major lack of corporate responsibility.

2 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/21/2008

Cold air blowing from passenger side vents and windshield defroster regardless of control or temp settings. Driver side temp adjustments work properly, but passenger side and windshield defroster controls do not provide any heat. Windshield does not defrost, as temp mix is not functioning for passenger vents or for windshield defroster. Problem has not been resolved.

3 Defogger Controls problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

Failure of climate control system - vents get "stuck" in the wrong position so that system heats in the summer or will not heat in the winter. Vents that air comes out of is not controllable with normal knob positions. May only affect one side of car or may affect both. Random behavior over many months.

4 Defogger Controls problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/20/2007

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee hvac system failure. Blend doors allow ac to be on when the heat is on allowing the windshield to freeze/fog in the winter and fall. The dealer and Chrysler knows there is a flaw with all of these cars. Makes for very unsafe driving half of the year if you can't see out the windshield.

5 Defogger Controls problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/16/2007

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee ltd 1999 with no heat or defrost in driver side was told by dealer it would cost between 1200 and 1500 to fix I am out of extended warranty but I feel this is a safety concern to to defroster not working I know I am not alone with this problem please help!!!!!!!!!!!!.

6 Defogger Controls problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/13/2007

Climate control system on 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited (32,000 miles) will not direct heated air to passenger side of vehicle resulting in very limited visibility to right side/front of vehicle during cold weather. "blend door" has been identified as reason for problem. Should be repaired/fixed by dealer.

7 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/05/2007

I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland with 44,500 miles. The events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of Jeep. Consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. In addition to the fogging there is a leak of antifreeze, hazardous material, coming into the vehicle driver and passenger areas, due to defective heater core. To correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary and a new heater core at a cost of approximately $1,700 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. According to the certified service department at the local Jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limiteds/overlands with dual zone ventilation systems.

8 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/21/2007

Windows fog up so bad I can't see on right side of car. Cold air blows out on passenger side even as the temp control is set on hi position. Ran diag. On hvac and error code 52 = ai (recirc) door travel range too large & 56 = right temperature door travel too large.

9 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/19/2007

Climate control blend door failure - fogged up front window and nearly caused an accident.

10 Defogger Controls problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/18/2007

Passenger side only blows cold air. Re-circulating feature doesn't work. This is on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland with dual climate controls. The blend door and recirc door is broken and I have heard of several cases of this happening to other owners. This affects all 1999-2004 cherokees with dual climate control and the deal gives estimates of 900-2500 to fix.

11 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/15/2007

Dual climate control is broken. Cold air on one side & hot air on the other side.

12 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/15/2007

I can't believe after reading on the internet and reading the complaints on this site about this problem that nothing has been done! I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokeellimited with dual heat zone. I recently lost heat on the passenger side. Now you ask how is this a safety issue? well when you have it on defrost you have heat on the driver's side and ice cold air blowing on the passenger side. (remember that when you have the defroster on the a/c pump circulates which causes very cold air to blow) now only part of your windshield is clearing up. I live in central PA where the weather is always changing. Especially in the fall and spring. This temperature change can cause the windshield to fog up rather quickly especially when it's damp and there are warm bodies in the car. This can occur when your driving down the road at any time. I work for napa auto parts and travel in 3 states. I'm a former vehicle technician and know a lot of repair shops. I was blown away at how many of theses repair shop knew exactly what the problem was and said that this is very common. They also stated that it is very time consuming and very costly to repair. Most dealership stock the parts to repair this. This alone should throw up a red flag! the blend doors were designed very cheaply and we the consumer have to pay for it. Anyone can see the hazard here the question is, will somebody do something before there is a death? ( there may have already been some, but nobody will ever know if the person is dead!). Now you know why this should be a recall. I can tell you that not many people are aware of this website. You would have a lot more complaints on this issue if they did.

13 Defogger Controls problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/14/2007

I only gwt heat on the drivers side and cold air on the passenger's side of my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Their is an on going problem with 1998-2004 Jeeps where the ac blend door breaks.

14 Defogger Controls problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/11/2007

I have the same problem as thousands of other 2003 Grand Cherokee limited owners, a blend door malfunction, which causes the passenger side of the vehicle to blow cold air even if the heat is selected at hi. The problem was noticed at 68,000 k and my estimate for repair is $1,000. 00. It is dangerous to drive in bad weather as the defrost only works on the drivers side. But on the bright side the air works really good in July when I don't need four wheel drive.

15 Defogger Controls problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/05/2007

Cold air blows in through passenger side vents.

16 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

Heat failed on passenger side.

17 Defogger Controls problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/31/2007

My ac fan had been cutting on and off randomly in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I thought at first it may be a bad climate control control panel. A few days later, I smelled electrical burning smell in my car and the fan would not come on at all. Today I removed the blower fan, thinking it was bad, but it turns out the blower is fine, the blower control module relay and wiring harness had melted in the dashboard above where the passengers feet would rest. I have taken pictures and will be glad to send them upon request, but I think Jeep/Chrysler should have to replace this due to the potential fire threat and lack of safety (since the fuse did not blow). I attempted to replace the part through an automotive parts company, but the blower control module will need to be purchased straight from Chrysler corp. Please call me or email me with any follow up questions you may have. Once again, I will also send pictures upon request. Thanks!.

18 Defogger Controls problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/31/2007

Automatic climate control temperature control blend doors broke, leaving me without defrost. The windshield was icing up on the driver's side while driving in sleet.

19 Defogger Controls problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

The "blower control module" is the electronic component responsible for adjusting the fan speed for the hvac on vehicles equipped with the automatic climate control. It is a well known problem that these units fail. It has failed on my vehicle. My own independent mechanic has replaced quite a few of them. The wiring harness and plug that supplies power is not heavy duty enough and it overheats and melts and could cause a fire. It can be further exaggerated if the blower collects debris and draws more current. Once it fails the blower will no longer operate. This makes the defroster unavailable, which could create very unsafe driving conditions should the windows fog up. Chrysler has a redesigned unit with a new harness so it is obviously a problem they are already aware of. I'm in the process of having the new parts installed and the old parts will be available. Here's a write up of how to fix it yourself. . Read more...

20 Defogger Controls problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/29/2007

Defroster not working properly.

21 Defogger Controls problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/21/2007

Blend doors failed leaving my vehicle without functional defrost function. I took care of this before winter where visibility would undoubtedly be affected.

22 Defogger Controls problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee - passenger side heater blend door failure -- always blows cold air on passenger side. This is a very common problem with the 1999-2004 wj. Chrysler canada has refused to do anything to help me fix this without paying $1400 as my dealership (tower Chrysler in calgary, ab) has quoted. Vehicle was just out of warranty when this occurred. . 23 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

Blend door mechanism broke numerous times, blower motor resistor burnt up twice.

24 Defogger Controls problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/21/2007

Blend doors inoperable. Resistor allows too much torque for the plastic blend door to handle. (as for the property damage yes or no question I checked yes because my Jeep is my property and it is damaged!) also I can't remember exactly what date I purchased this Grand Cherokee? but, it was definitely March 2005.

25 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/10/2007

Events leading up to failure: normal usage of vehicle cabin comfort and safety controls (air conditioning/demister) systems. Failure: cabin air conditioning system now does not regulate temperature. The system cannot be made to use hot or cold air on demand. In investigating this failure, it has come to my attention that 99% of all other owners of this vehicle report experiencing a failure of the 'temperature blend control doors' within the 'a/c blend assembly'. Consequences: the vehicle demister is unable to clear the front windshield of mist/fogging (effectively, depending on outside temperature). Corrections: no corrections have been performed due to cost prohibitive expense to do so. The local dealerships quote a price of around $1800. 00 to repair the failure, while obtaining parts and performing self-repair will cost upwards of $300. 00 plus time spent.

26 Defogger Controls problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/09/2007

Today while driving the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited the heater stopped sending warm air to the passenger side defroster and heat outlets, has dual zone controls. I suspected it was a problem with thegateswhich control the amount of warm air to enter the passenger cabin. Upon researching the problem on the internet it appeared this was an identified defect affecting many Jeep Grand Cherokee owners. The problem was apparently not correctable without replacing the gates"and actuators. I called the local dealership, and they acknowledge dit is a known problem , and have received a technical service bulletin on the issue. Estimated repair cost was $1100 plus. In my opinion manufacturing defects should be covered through a recall and at no expense to the owner.

27 Defogger Controls problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/14/2007

Visibility:defroster/defoger heating system. My wife and I purchased our 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee in August of 06 with 38,000 miles on the odometer. While she had it in for a routine oil change she told the tech about noises in the dash and he responded with it supposed to sound like that. Now 12,000 miles later the Jeep has no heat at all and we need to pay $1,000 to fix something that is not covered under the extended warranty. We purchased this vehicle with the intension on keeping it for more than 100,000 miles. If we keep the Jeep this long it looks like we'll have to have this fixed again if it breaks every 50,000 miles. I didn't see heat as an option on the window sticker.

28 Defogger Controls problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/10/2007

Heater on my 2001 Jeep cherokee has gone out. Apparently it is a common problem and expensive to have repair. The motors that control the doors strip out & will not move. I have heard it is around 1500 dollars to have repaired at the dealership. I feel that there should be a recall to have this issue resolved.

29 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/22/2007

On January 22, 2007, I heard a "cracking" noise under the dash as I started my Jeep in the morning. Later that morning it became apparent that it was not possible to get any heat in the cabin, nor was it possible to defrost the windshield. After trying various settings, all that can be achieved is to blow cold (ambient) air (currently 4f) out of the various vents/defroster. This does very, very little to remove frost from the windshield. Additionally, the heater core has begun failing. This releases additional moisture into the cabin, causing even worse fogging (frosting this time of year). This combination of failures renders the defroster totally ineffective, and requires the dangerous act of wiping or scraping the inside of the window about every 5 minutes under normal winter conditions. I am informed that this condition is caused by the breakage of "mix doors" in the hvac system, a known defective "weak part" that is currently being replaced (at customer expense) on virtually all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees with automatic climate controls. Breakage of these parts can constitute a serious hazard, and should be a required recall by DC. I have had to undertake this repair myself - a huge task, as I do not have the $1800 to have the dealer repair it.

30 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/13/2007

Defroster / defogger failed to produce warm air resulting in restricted visibility. Dealer had to replace the "blend doors" within the defrost / heater system. Cost of repairs was $1100+. Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower.

31 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/10/2007

Heater blend door failure, heater constantly blows cool air, vehicle only has 35,000 miles on it dealer estimate to fix $1200-$1500 dollars.

32 Defogger Controls problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/06/2007

2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 51,000 miles passenger side heat stop working causing windshield to not defrost. Jeep says this is a very common problem but there is no recall on it yet. Jeep admitted that the blend door is defective and they have a better part to replace it. Had them replace this at a cost of $680. 00.

33 Defogger Controls problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/03/2007

Visibility- heat/cool erractic operation of auto temp control 2004 Grand Cherokee overland- in cold weather produces cold air on its own- in warm weather produces hot air on one side of vehicle and cold air on other side at identical temp settings.

34 Defogger Controls problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/02/2007

I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. Late winter, when I needed it the most, my heat began not working only on the driver's side of the vehicle. The passenger side had plenty of heat though. I took it to the dealer and after a $1100 repair bill to repair the blend doors inside the ac system (mostly labor), it was repaired. Today, again, I have no heat and now no ac too. A diagnosis now says that I have a code for "travel too large"-this is the code for the blend doors again. After an internet search, I see that there are many, many others like me who are having the same issue. This is a safety concern as in the winter, there is no way to clear the windshield with the cold air. Dailmer Chrysler needs to do the right thing here and stop profiting from their own defects. This should be a recall to repair all affected vehicles.

35 Defogger Controls problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

A/c , heater does not function properly, sporadic air flow.
