My car goes from drive, to park, to neutral or reverse with little to no touch of the gear shifter. This is a huge safety issue, as recently assuming I was still in drive mode, noted that the gear had actually shifted to neutral. Had it shifted to reverse instead, my children and I could have been badly hurt, likely found to be at fault, consequently also facing financial anguish. Also, the gear shifts while in motion, which is even additionally dangerous being that I live in a city where the highway is my primary method of traveling.

When driving for about 20mn after slowing down to go threw town and coming to a stop. I will start driving again and. Trying to get up to speed my Jeep will not shift gears. I have been in neutral for several minutes before it shifts. This has happened several times. It has also hard shifted, and has had surged of power where it lunges a head.
On startup when cold. Transmission is weird hard shifts. Seems to not know what gear to be in. Sudden stop in transmission between 1st. And 2nd. Gear. Vehicle at 1300 miles took to dealer they test drove one mile (1) advised me of TSB report from Jeep in motion with transmission. Adjustment to control shift is even worse than before. Jerky and almost dead drop in transmission on brand new vehicle is hard to believe. Like to see TSB report. 20 plus years auto mechanic myself. Dealer did experience the trouble I have with vehicle. In a one mile road test. Dealership did not close out work order. Will mail me copy of work order. Still waiting since febuary 28. 2019 service.

Transmission has been degrading as I drive. It started by downshifting to 3rd gear and it got stuck. Now consistently I cannot shift from 3rd to 4th gear without hard shifting and making a loud noice while in automatic, it does help changing gears while using the hand pedals and not accelerating and going slow to be able to shift to 4th gear. . . I've taken it to the dealer when I do oil change but they want to charge me to diagnose which is a power train and every time I take it they say there is not anything. It used to behave when cold but now even if engine is hot and driven it does the same. Sometimes even with pedals the transmission switches back to 3rd even if I am in 6th gear and does not get pass 3rd gear unless I turn the engine off and turn it back on. In addition the reverse does not work if I don't shift right away on reverse. If I leave the engine on for a few mins and don't use the reverse gear it won't let me and goes to neutral and camera goes off, so I have to turn engine off and then I can switch to reverse. Transmission is horrible. I can't switch from 3rd to 4th and I can't go reverse without having to turn car off, wife can't drive it and don't have money to pay the dealer to fix an issue that is clearly a fault at the manufacture. I've called dealership but they only are interested on charging and mentioned that they may charge me up to 5k to change my transmission. . . I will find an exact date, but I am giving an approximate day, it was when I was heading to court to help a family relative so I'll find out if I need to prove when exactly this started. Thank you. . .
Tl the contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that there was a failure with the gear box. While driving 55 mph, the gear suddenly slipped out of fifth into first gear and caused the vehicle to jerk and brake suddenly, which nearly caused a crash. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer (riverhead Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram, 642 w main st, riverhead, NY 11901, (631) 727-1040) and manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 85,000.
Engine caution light came on while driving on the interstate 5, called dealership for guidance I was informed that as long as the engine warning light does not blink it will be okay to drive. I scheduled an appointment for a week later. Within the week the car would not stay in reverse and later it kept on popping out of reverse. I also notice that the gear was not changing properly and seems to strain to drive. I took the vehicle in for a look at and informed the service supervisor of the reverse condition and that the "r" in the shifter kept on blinking.
Esm (electronic shift module) is faulty on these models; 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This issue does not allow the shifter to communicate with the transmission. Therefore the vehicle does not know what gear it needs to be in. After having reresearched online this is a know, common issue. This is a serious danger as the vehicle goes into "limp" mode; (won't properly accelerate). This can happen under many driving conditions, city or highway. Imagine entering traffic at a busy intersection and suddenly losing the ability to accelerate. I have experienced this, as have many other individuals according to internet research. It seems that Chrysler knows of the issue. Why hasn't there been a recall?.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When the contact parked and exited the vehicle, it rolled forward over the contact's left foot. The contact was driven to the hospital with a fractured foot and stayed there overnight. The contact received a recall notice regarding the shifter not engaging in gear and to be careful while parking. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The NHTSA campaign number was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 6,200.
Recall 16v-240: last night, I received a call while in the grocery store that my car had been involved in an accident. When I went outside, my car had run into the car front of me in the parking lot. The car was running, the doors were locked and the engine was in gear. There appear to be several failures here. First, the gear shifter does not move into a gear, but instead seems to operate as a toggle switch. So you never know for sure if you are in out of gear like you do in every other automatic transmission car I've ever owned. Second, when I pushed the on/off button, the car apparently remained on. Shouldn't I have at least been alerted that I had attempted to turn off the car while in gear. Third, I opened the door with the car in gear. Shouldn't I have been alerted again. Fourth, I used the fob to lock the car and then walked away with the roc, all while it was running and in gear. Again, shouldn't I have been alerted. I'm sure there were some electronic beeps when I did some of these things, but that's clearly not enough. My wife's car has the horn honk when you leave the car with the fob and the engine is just running. I think I should have received much more attention-grabbing warnings than any I may have received given the danger posed by my car still running and in gear.
I had cranked my Jeep and not shifted into gear so it was in park. It was stationary when I jumped out to grab something from just inside and heard a weird noise. I ran back into my garage to see my car rolling down and across my front yard. I thought someone was trying to steal it so ran up along side the passenger side and that is when I saw no one was in it. I ran around to the driver side and try to get into to stop it but could get in while it was rolling and ended up getting dragged for about a second as it cross the road. My Jeep keep going and end up hitting my neighbors mailbox and tree. Once my Jeep was stopped I opened the door and notice the it was in neutral. My garage is flat and I was backed into my garage so there is no real way that even if it was in neutral that it would have the motion to move out of my gagarge. I actually think it had shifted on its own into drive and when it hit the tree I think it popped it into neutral. I was luckly not to get run over or anyone else was not injuried while my car was moving own its own.
The shifter in the vehicle is definitely not a good design. After months of owning the Jeep, (Dec 2015) I still could not safely assume I had it in the correct gear. Can not trust without looking, and in the sunlight I's extremely difficult. I thought some of the complaints early on were people who probably shouldn't be driving but after 5 months, I still cannot got to a gear correctly 50% of the time. I can drive a straight 6 but this shifter is horrible. I've hit reverse when attempting park, neutral or back to reverse when attempting drive. Makes me feel pretty incompetent but my husband who is a truck driver has problems as well.
While driving the vehicle has a tendency to either not change gears (rev up) or even slip into neutral. It's creating a safety issue especially driving at highway speed. At times I am able to get to the side of the road turn vehicle off and shift it back in gear which sometimes I have to do it more than one time.
Pulling away from traffic light, transmission appeared to be stuck in either first or second gear, and would not shift to another gear. Attempting to accelerate (got up to 20mph) resulted in the engine over revving and the oil pressure to exceed 90 pounds. The check engine light did not come on. After turning off vehicle and letting it sit for approximately 30 minutes, drove the vehicle and everything appeared normal. Will be taking vehicle to dealer for diagnosis and repair.
A few weeks/months after the purchase of my Jeep about 2 years ago, I noticed that my cruise control had stopped working and the abs light had come. I checked my fuses and relays and they were ok. Then a day or so later I was driving on the interstate and my check engine light and my brake lights came on. My Jeep then seemed to downshifted itself. It felt as if the transmission had locked up, it slowed to about 30mph and would not shift onto another gear. I pulled over killed the motor. After a few attempts to drive it, I turned the key over and noticed the break and engine lights were off so I attempted to drive home and was sucessfull. This started to happen more and more often. I noticed that it mainly happened when either I was running my ac or it was wet/raining outside. I then started researching Jeep problems and recalls. I came across the daminoncrysler recall no. 13. The recall had described the issue I was having, so I researched my VIN and it staled that the recall no. 13 has already been completed on Jeep. Now my Jeep is stuck in limp mode and will not reset. It will not shift and the abs, brake and engine lights stay on. Is there a way to find out exactly what service did they did when it was recalled in 2005 (if any)? I dont know what to do.

I am getting a check engine light about the vehicle selector module it also has on many occasions no engages into gear like it was stuck in neutral even when the shifter is moved back and forth now it seems to not engage into gear for some time and at first start of take off seems to not be fully engaged I saw a recall about the control module already but when I went to the Chrysler site and plug in my VIN it doesn't show any recalls.
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received NHTSA recall campaign number 13v175000 (electrical system , power train). The vehicle was taken to the dealer who reprogrammed the final drive controller module and performed the recall repair; however, the remedy lasted two weeks. The service all wheel drive system warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle would not shift into neutral. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that failure was an electrical surge that did not allow the gear shift to function properly. The dealer reprogrammed the computer software for the shifting mechanism. The failure recurred approximately eight times since the software was reprogrammed. The vehicle was being towed on a mobile home; however, the gear shift would get stuck in low shift and failed to shift into neutral gear. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55493. Rk.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2006. While driving car will fail to change gears. Very dangerous on expressway. Transmission stalls at will.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the gear shift control module was not working properly. The gear shift would not shift into gear at any speed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The failure mileage was 37,000.
I was recently driving on residential road going about 35mph under normal conditions and the automatic Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 2006 stalls. The check engine light appears. Pressing on the gas pedal will rev the engine but it is like the Jeep is in neutral. Everything else seems to work accept the car is not in any gear. The dashboard indicates the car is in drive. I have to coast off to the side of the road. I turn the ignition off before restarting, then the car seems to run fine for awhile. This has happened 3 times over the last month. The first time I took the car into a local Jeep dealer where they could only fine old codes in the Jeep computer system noting inactive transmission problems which they since cleared and were unable to do much else. An error code for the O2 sensor was also found and the O2 sensor was replaced. I was told to try it out and let them know if it happens again. That was about 10 days ago. Since then I have had two incidents that have occurred over this weekend, I have yet to contact the dealer which I plan to do this week.
Incident happened in mall parking lot. Tried to put Jeep in reverse and vehicle did not go into gear. Put vehicle in park, checked to make certain emergency brake was not on then put in reverse again. This time it accelerated extremely fast and backed into a parked car behind me which slid into car next to it, which slid into the car next to it. It happened in about 1/4 second and damaged 4 cars, counting the Jeep.

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the transmission did not shift gears properly and had a substantial delayed response. The contact also stated that the vehicle jerked violently. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was shut down and restarted; the vehicle functioned as normal. The failure occurred intermittently at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to both an authorized dealer and independent auto shop for diagnosis. The technicians were unable to duplicate or locate the malfunction. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 500.
Anytime I step on the gas pedal and it changing into another gear, the car stalls and with a violently push forward. This happens every time I am speeding and it changes gears. Almost everyone who sits in my car complains about this rocking and tells me it may injure me someday.

The contact purchased a 2005, Jeep Chrysler cherokee ,and before it had 5,000 miles on it they had to put in a new transmission . It was not changing gears properly, and there was a smell coming from the car like plastic burning. She noticed this from the time she bought the vehicle. On 8-2-05 she took vehicle to dealer for an oil change. When she drove it home it started to shake very badly. She took it back to the dealer, and they told her they had to flush her transmission 4 times because it had water in it. Also, the air conditioner (ac) hose was leaking into the transmission. They were waiting on the parts to come in to fix it. Chrysler told her they could not authorize a rental/loaner car to drive.
Consumer stated the the vehicle was in park with the emergency brake engaged and engine running. The consumer exited the vehicle then it began to roll backwards and hit a brick wall. Upon inspection the consumer noticed that the gear lever had shifted from park to reverse. The consumer contacted the dealer about gear shift problem prior to this accident.
