Jeep Laredo owners have reported 3 problems related to brake sensor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
We bought a used 1999 Jeep grand cherokee larado last year for our son to drive, thinking it would be a safe vehicle for him in all kinds of weather and road conditions. We did not expect to have problems driving on the highway on dry roads in perfect weather. The vehicle has started to stall at highway speeds, causing a loss of power steering and brakes, and most likely air bags as well. We are lucky he is a safe driver, and was able to get the vehicle off the road safely. Our trusted mechanic, who is a Jeep owner, changed the crankcase position sensor, this did not help. He advised us to bring it to the local Jeep dealer, because they would be better able to troubleshoot the problem, reading the codes, as opposed to throwing parts at it. The dealer cleaned some ground wires, gave it back to us, and it stalled on the highway going home, and wouldn't restart. We had to wait for a tow truck in a hazardous location in a rainstorm. We brought it back to the dealer, and they keep it for a week. Put 50 miles on it test driving, and couldn't duplicate the problem. They didn't charge us for this, they seem like they are trying to help, but they don't seem to have a good handle on the problem. The problem could be caused by any number of electrical components, from the computer, to the wiring, to sensors, modules, even the ignition switch. No codes are displayed. In looking on this website, I found 5 complaints from just 1999 and 2000, for the same problem. One woman is terrified to drive it with her three kids in the car. This is not confined to just these model years. There are a lot of these vehicles on the road, some people have been able to fix the problem, some certainly have not because it is hard to pinpoint. How Chrysler has been able to duck responsibility on this serious problem for so long is beyond me.

I have a 2003 Jeep grand cherokee and am having periodic unintended accelerations. . . No accidents, but close. . . And I have verified in each case that my foot was nowhere near the accelerator and firmly on the brake pedal only. . . The period between episodes is shortening, there was probably a year between the first and second, and only 3 weeks between occurance 4 and 5. . . (the last time is noted as the incident date)
interestingly yesterday the engine warning light came on and I had a local Dodge mechanic look at the vehicle, he noted that the computer code indicated the tps was failing. . Since the Jeep dealer was closed, I asked him if it was safe to drive, and he warned me to brake well in advance of any intended stop as the sensor might not read correctly and would try to overcome the braking. . . . I am going to insist on keeping the defective part (I don't exactly trust the dealer)
I find it interesting that this Dodge mechanic would caution this way when the Jeep mechanics don't
(note: I had had the same problem with my 1998 Jeep, and traded it in when I was launched in front of semi (fortunately it had just started to move at a traffic light and stopped in time). . . Dealer said it needed a new computer although they had stuck to the story of "fat feet" until it was out of warrenty).

04-29-04 while driving through a parking lot, prior to that had been to a flower nursey where a lot of dirt and gravel were on ground and then to a shopping center. Driving a slow speed approaching stop sign, regular weight in vehicle. Applied brake pressure which seemed to grip and then started to slow and then lost function on brakes. Applied steady pressure to try to stop before the intersection, approximately 15 feet from the interesection took foot off brake which was pressed to floor which seemed as if they were responding but only for a few seconds which ceased to work despite continous pressure. No brakes whatsoever. Removed foot immediately and then pushed down hard to engage abs. Felt or heard nothing. At that point, steering was under control but car was not stoping. Was in straightway struck another vehicle which was speeding through. Hit the side of the passenger part of the other vehicle in the rear, totaled SUV with full frontal impact. Air bags deployed in a soft manner. Feels as though sensors along with other systems were not operating normally. Suffered head and chest injuries. Selt bags did not lock along with brakes. Again air bags were soft, driver went through air bag striking the steering wheel with head and chest.
