Constant power train problems with vehicle. [e-mail 1-18-08] it is not a powertrain problem. It is really an engine sludging problem. I have researched this problem and have found out this is a common problem for Chrysler products such as the intrepid and durango. It is now starting to show up on vehicles like mines, which is a Jeep Liberty. My vehicle's check engine light came on December 21, 2007 and it has been at the dealership for repairs every since. I was informed it is awaiting a camshaft that is on a nationwide backorder with no eta. In my opinion, it is obvious other vehicles are experiencing similar problems throughout the country. The dealer refuse to replace the engine because I was unable to produce all of my receipts for oil changes. The vehicle currently has 61,000 miles and I was able to come up with receipts from 38,000 up until the current mileage. This vehicle has had numerous problems such as overheating and cylinder head replacement on numerous occasions, 49,622, 51,621, 51,793, 55,182, 57,269 and finally 61,211, all due to engine sludging. I was told all the problems were due to improper oil changes and/or cheep gasoline; however, I have changed the oil in accordance with the manufacturer's suggested intervals and have always used gasoline from distributors such as amoco, exxon and valero. I suspect this in another defective Chrysler product that will cost the manufacturer millions if they did the right thing. Why is there a shortage of camshafts for this vehicle? why is this part in high demand? hopefully your investigation will reveal what is truly going on. Chrysler is trying to make it look like it is the owners who are at fault but in reality, its another defective product they have put on the market. Thanks for your response and your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Speedometer again became erratic and then inop. Cruise control inop and engine light came on. Took car to dealer and just made it when engine cut out completely sensor replaced again second time was charged $91. 44!!!!.
I brought this car new from the dealership so knowing that it was new I didn't think to have so many problems with it. The check engine light turns on the car so I take the car to get check where I brought it so when I do they keep the car for a at least a week and I stay with out a car. So they give me the car back and then again with the same problem I take it back to get fixed and again they tell me they fixed it and gives it back to me. They told me that most likely it's a factory manufacture problem. Having all those problems with this auto; I want to cancel the purchase of this auto.

March 2005 - 2003 Jeep Liberty 4 cylinder - carriage town Chrysler, delaware, ohio - I took my Jeep Liberty to the dealership for backfiring, check engine light, running rough. They found only spark plug #1 fouled and replaced only the spark plug. 2nd time approx a week later I took my Jeep Liberty in and it was running rough, no check engine light. Dealership refused to look at my vehicle without the check engine light on. 2 days later I returned vehicle with check engine light on, running rough, and backfiring. They replaced all spark plugs and all wires. This happened at approx 28,000 mile on the vehicle. December 2005, engine light on, running rough. Replaced spark plug #1 only and wire on spark plug #1. I had been told by service department at this time they had put a "special" spark plug in my vehicle and that there was a technical service bulletin on my vehicle. Jan, 2006 - vehicle is currently in the shop and they are trying to determine what is wrong with the engine, currently they cannot find what is burning up spark plug #1. Technical service bulletin: mfg bulletin number: 0803403
mfg bulletin date: 20040302
component: electrical system

The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Liberty. The crank sensor failed. The contact has seen other similar complaints on the internet. When the crank sensor fails the vehicle will stall and cut off, causing a loss of steering and brake power. For instance one can be going 60 mph and the vehicle will just stop. There is no warning or lights to warn him. The crank sensor failed and vehicle will stop. Check engine light came on afterwards but it automatically reset I self, causing the check engine light to go off in thirty minutes. This was the first time this happened. But while attempting to take the vehicle to a service station it happened several times. The dealership replaced the crank sensor and the cam sensor. . He has found on the internet the codes that gave a false reading for the cam sensor going out instead of the crank sensor.
The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the air bag failed to deploy. The contact was involved in three crashes and the front driver’s air bag failed to deploy. The contact suffered injuries to the head, mouth, and clavicle. The contact also stated that the vehicle failed to start and the check engine light remained illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to have a diagnostic test performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure and current mileages were 20,000.
While driving check engine light illuminated. Vehicle completely shut down. The odometer stopped working. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told the o-2 sensor had to be replaced, and they replaced them, which did not fix the problem. Consumer took the vehicle back, dealer then replaced the computer. However, the problem recurred.
Transmission and engine lights came on upon towing a coleman "yuma" pop-up camper. Took in to dealer and dealer found that torque converter to be bad along with gear wear. Transmission needed to be replaced and gear wear repaired. Car has only 8,000 miles on it and it is the first time the car has towed anything. The car should not have had a problem since it is rated with a much higher towing capacity than the coleman "yuma" is. The dealership is trying to tell me that this is an isolated incident of a bad transmission, but upon further investigation with Jeep forums on the net, 85% of Liberty owners are experiencing problems with their transmission after 8,000 miles! one owner has had his transmission replaced 3 times! the dealership said this was covered under my warranty this time, but that it would not be covered next time. If the transmission is faulty on all of them, I don't want to get stuck with a lemon on a brand new vehicle!.
