36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/25/2018

I have a pending file: 11151151; engine fire. I took a quick survey of complaints on the NHTSA site and found 23 other Jeep Liberty records from 2006-2012 describing valve failures and engine fires, which indicates a design flaw and need for investigation. Nhsta should also look at model years 2002-2005, Dodge nitro, and other vehicles that used the mopar 3. 7 engine. The rate of failure and fire points to a design flaw that must be rectified.

37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/25/2018

Driving freeway speed, engine lost power, electronic throttle control light flashed, then engine light; pulled onto shoulder, raised hood, observed fire at valve cover/wiring harness. Mechanic's subsequent inspection revealed valve/rocker arm failure resulted in punctured valve cover that released oil onto hot engine resulting in fire. Rocker arm failures are common on mopar 3. 7 engine - google the term and many hits will appear. This is unacceptable for an engine with 82,000 miles that was serviced regularly according to manufacturer recommendations. New engine now required.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/11/2018

My husband had driven to a doctors appointment. When he got in the Jeep to leave it wouldn't start. We had it towed to our mechanic. After he inspected the vehicle he said a piston ring had come off the #1 cylinder and fallen below the piston causing the cylinder to be damaged. It will require a new motor which will cost $4000-$5000 if we can find a decent engine. Apparently these engines can be difficult to find and are more expensive because this is a common problem.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/22/2018

The rocker arm of my Jeep became attached from the engine because there is a flaw on the passenger's side of the engine. The way the cam turns makes it a very real possibility that the rocker arms on that side can detach. Apparently this is a very common problem and very well known among mechanics for the company as well as third-party mechanics, but the company themselves claimed they've never heard any issues on the matter. I actually have had a friend have the same issue with her vehicle a couple years back, and she wrote and they stonewalled her as well. I really think this is a dangerous issue that should be examined more seriously. There's tons of people who have written online who have had the same issue.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/10/2017

While driving my 2011 Jeep Liberty with the cruise control set at 70mph on I-65 interstate coming out of gary indiana the tell-tales lit up and the car dropped out of cruise control and it took the car a few seconds to gain power again. This all started with the drivers door not unlocking with the remote. A diagnostics was run on the car and they said they couldn't find anything wrong, other than a rear sensor on the brake making the brake light come on. Doing an internet research the tipm sensor is the cause of most of these problems which Chrysler doesn't want to admit. This same issue was deemed not an issue a few years back by the NHTSA with the Liberty but deemed no good by the NHTSA for the Jeep cherokee and Dodge durango. This was a dangerous situation for me and my family. If I hadn't took action as quick as I did we would have been rear ended by a semi. I don't feel safe driving this SUV and this is my wife's car which she takes my son to school in. The NHTSA needs to do something about this issue now.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/07/2017

On Friday, 07. 07. 2017, as I was driving into a turn lane from the hwy, I had slowed way down for traffic then picked up speed slightly, not even 10 mph, to follow cars in the turn lane when the accelerator became sluggish and the Jeep came to a stop. As I pressed the accelerator again there was a very loud pop from under the hood. Everything quit, the engine, the electric, the starter would not turn over when I tried to start it again or the emergency flashers. Just before this happened the engine light and, what I found out later, the electronic throttle control light came on. I was confused at what just happened. Thinking what I saw next was steam coming from under the Jeep was steam I popped the hood to go look. There was traffic all around on the hwy. Once I opened the hood I found the engine compartment was on fire, back against the firewall between the engine and the steering column, behind the battery. The fire got bigger once the hood was open, it spread very fast. People in other cars were yelling and a guy stopped to help me and told me to get away from the Jeep because it was gas that was burning. The fire dept was called yet by the time they got there the whole front end of the Jeep was destroyed.

My vehicle has a little over 60,000. 00 miles and is out of warranty and not covered and I contacted Chrysler and they will not do anything about this. They are well aware of this faulty engine and there needs to be a recall or Chrysler needs to pay for my repairs. I have a 3. 47 liter engine with only 60,000. 00 miles and it needs to be replaced on the left side. Chrysler had this same issue with the 3. 6 liter engine and extended the warranty and the same or recall should be done with the 3. 7 liter engine.

69 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/19/2016

Amongst other issues: vehicle fails to start occasionally, from both cold and warm states. From completely off, turning the key begins ignition but often does not start the vehicle. Engine sputters but does not complete the start. On some occasions, depressing the gas pedal while trying to start the vehicle works, leading me to believe this is one of the widely reported tipm issues plaguing Jeeps from 2007-2014. I conclude the fuel pump fails to receive a signal to start from the tipm which causes the ignition failure. In addition, I have had multiple electrical issues including doors locking and unlocking when the opposite corresponding buttons are pressed, windshield wipers turning on when the turn signal is used, warning lights on the dashboard reporting non-issues, failure of power steering, and failure to accelerate when the gas pedal is depressed. Please address this issue as soon as possible.

At 48k miles engine started having multiple cylinder missfires, too lean then too rich codes for cyclinders while traveling on the highway, brought to dealer, was charged $148 to replace O2 sensor. Drove vehicle out of the lot, and within five miles from dealer, experienced same trouble. After one and half weeks at the dealer, they had replaced 2 pcm modules, O2 sensors and then the catalytic converter. Vehicle was driven no less than 3 months and 5k driven miles after work was completed the engine started failing again with the same issue, stranding by disabled spouse 1400 miles away from home. Dealer now wants to remove engine head and rebuilt engine.
