12/8/2020: my daughter had just returned home from college literally that morning driving through nyc to DE. That afternoon she went out to see a friend and thought she had a flat tire while driving at about 50 mph and struggled to pull over. It was at night so we couldn't see the damage. We called aaa to come change the tire. He examined the fluid under the tire and then it was obvious that tire rod fell and punctured the tire. We could also see a long black trail where the tire rod dragged on the road before she could stop. The tow truck driver said if she didn't stop when she did she would have fell into the deep ditch next to it and it would have flipped over. Considering it was dark she was lucky and even luckier this didn't happen on the highway in nyc only a few hours earlier. But what was even more disturbing is the front upper and lower control arms were just replace the rear lower control arms due to corrosion was done at the dealer, along with an alignment. (NHTSA campaign number: 18v278000). It's clear that the recall should also include replacing the front control arms. The window regulator also failed the week before.
There is an active recall on some 2006 Jeep Liberty's, however mine was not included in the recall but is having the issues of the recall. I need my vehicle included in the recall since it is a problem my vehicle is experiencing. I was told by the dealer that the front ball joints (control arms) are out and that is what the recall is for. There was also a recall for the rear control arms and we had that recall corrected. Please add my car to the recall list so thsi can be corrected.

Vehicle was driving normally and was in motion going straight leaving a parking lot and the front suspension lower control arm just broke without warning due to corrosion. The right side of the control arm landed onto the wheel making it so the right front wheel could no longer turn. I'm glad it happened to me in a parking lot and not on the highway or I could have been seriously injured.
This vehicle has a broken control arm. While the 2008 Liberty is not under recall the 2004-2007 Liberty is under recall for this same issue. I feel this recall should be expanded.

On Friday, 02/15/19, traveling back from austin to houston, TX, with my 4 year old son for my weekend visitation, I had stopped at the entrance to my apt complex and was waiting for the access gate to open to enter. Turning right and elevating slightly to enter my complex, I heard a loud grinding noise and felt the front passenger side of my vehicle lower. I thought I had managed to run over the curb along the public street and tried to reverse when the same loud grinding noise could be heard. I immediately stopped, placed the car in park, and then got out of the vehicle to inspect. I could see that the wheel was folded inward towards the vehicle. Looking under the car I could also see the lower control arm now resting on the ground on the passenger side. I had zero idea what could've caused this but was extremely thankful it had not occurred while I was traveling in excess of 80 mph on the hwy with my son in the back seat. The vehicle was still on the street in front of the back entrance to my apt complex and a passerby stopped to see if he could help. He recognized the source of the problem and told me that my passenger wheel had separated from the ball joint. He mentioned that he had seen this happen to number of other vehicles. A local harris county sheriff officer arrived on the scene and I called my state farm insurance roadside assistance to have my vehicle towed. The vehicle was towed to a nearby a nearby dealership, autonation Jeep/Chrysler. On Monday, 02/18/19, I stopped by the dealership and was told that the wheel separation had caused damage to a number of components. I began researching on-line and found out that a previous NHTSA campaign had been opened in 2006 that centered around the exact problem my vehicle experienced; NHTSA campaign#: 06v288000, daimler/Chrysler recall#. F23. This recall needs to be extended & additional owners notified.
Rear control arm rusted.
Here is the problem, will not schedule an appointment for the replacement rear lower control arms. This is a follow up complaint to the one I filed on 4-18-18, id# 11120806. On 1-4-19 I received a call from debbie of specialty parts about the original complaint. Different from the first representative not knowing why the dealer wanted a inspection before ordering the control arms, debbie stated that was a corporate decision. ( you would think that having dealt with this recall in one form or another over the past seven years they could get this straight. ) her reasoning was that fca had to inspect my vehicle and replace required parts before they could put on the new lower control arms. I asked what parts required inspection and she said my shocks . I told her those don't attach to the contro[ arm she then said that they would have to check my control arms and check the VIN to verify I had not gone to a junk yard and replaced them myself. I asked her if she knew what the control arms were and she stated she was not a tech. She also told me that they do not tell their customers all they have to do to a vehicle in a recall. Nhtsa, I would think if they state that they do not tell all that they do, they may not have told you all the issues either. There is no other way to interpret this conversation other than, "we need to inspect your vehicle and replace parts at your expense to minimize damage to our bottom line. " I asked to speak to her supervisor and debbie state she did not have one, no one above her. I ended the call. I have received the second recall card. Again it states to schedule your free repair. They will not do it. All I want from fca is what they stated they would do. Replace both rear lower control arms. Stop playing games.
The steering got hard and felt like the ball joint on the control arms lock up ; the door locks cycle continuously and now driver door, left rear passenger door and back tailgate will not open, horn will not blow, radio will not work, and interior lights won't work. The steering problems happen while driving on highways and when making turns of any kind the slightest movement of the steering wheel will car is moving makes erratic navigation in anything other than a straight path. The door locks cycle on and off while driving and also not moving and without the car being started and is as rest without key inserted in the ignition cylinder. I am fearful for my grand children to ride in the car with me and very concerned of a failure that may jeopardize their safety.
Keep Liberty limited edition 2006 issue with front and back control arms along with suspension issues. I have fixed this 2 to 3 times in about 2 years.

I contacted south point Dodge in austin, TX 2 months ago about replacing the rear control arms due to a recall. They scheduled an appointment for them to replace the part. When I arrived, they told me no one had ordered the part and that they could not provide service. I confirmed with the manager that they would order the part and call me back when they could replace it. I have not heard back in 2 months. I called today and they have not ordered the part. I asked them again to order the part, but now they are on backorder. I am concerned the rear control arm will fail while I am driving. I have done everything I can to get it replaced, but the dealership is not putting any importance on the recall. Here is their contact information: 5210 s ih 35 frontage rd, austin, TX 78745 (512) 443-9333.
This concerns recall u38?NHTSA 18v-278 that says fca will replace both rear lower control arms. Does not seem to be that straight forward. The attached file is the email received from fca and my original questions posted to them. I do not have a copy, but I replied to fca email asking whose recall is it, fca or their dealers? they did not address why different dealers are giving different infomation. I also asked what is the dealer going to inspect as it appears that the arms are corroding from the inside out. According to the recall paper work, fca says the arms must be replaced. Why should I be required to do two dealer visits because the dealer wants it that way. Fca is not taking ownership of the recall and is allowing different dealers to treat customers in very different ways, which amounts to no one is hooering the recall as printed.
This is regarding a 2006 Jeep Liberty. Driving the Jeep on a highway going approx. 65-70mp, something broke underneath the vehicle. The front end had broken down almost to the ground, but was able to get to the side of the highway without crashing. Had it towed to a mechanic. The mechanic estimate reported there is major corrosion in the ball joint, the control arm-r&r 4wd upper, both sides need replacement, axle shaft cv assembly r&r transmission type 4-wheel abs both sides. Ball joint-r&r 4wd lower, both sides, control arm with ball joint-front upper, ball joint front lower, constant velocity (cv) driveshaft-front left need new. Was told this was not covered under the recall because the recall was for rear control arm fracture (NHTSA campaign number: 18v278000) causing corrosion in ball joint. Not the front control arm. Even though the front control arm seems to have the same problem. Photo supplied of corrosion in front. Had two mechanics estimate cost to fix, but when the recall was noticed online, had it towed to greenway Chrysler Jeep dealership in orlando. They performed diagnostics and sent the information to Chrysler corp. To see about getting this covered under the recall, but told Chrysler refused to cover the repairs.
