1 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2011 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/10/2019

During filling up with gas, with the vehicle parked on level ground with engine off, the fueling nozzle will click off when the tank is full. However, approximately 1 second after the nozzle clicks off, a significant amount of fuel surges back out onto the side of the vehicle, the operator, and the ground. Estimate about 1-2 cups of fuel. This happens regardless of whether fueling fast or slow. ! aside from damaging the paint and finish on the vehicle, fuel splashing onto the operator creates a very hazardous situation!.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/14/2019

Skid plate and straps on fuel tank is rusting all apart. It has rusted enough there is hole you can put your figure in and actually touch plastic tank. The rest of skid plate is rusted so much you can see the layers of the metal separating. Vehicle only had around 62,000 miles when it was fist found and it at this point of rusting. Vehicle has never been off road and was taken excellent care off including prompt removal of any road salt. Last 3 1/2 years has not been driven very rarely when it has snowed more then an inch until roads were completely clear. As of 3/14/2019 when it was taken to dealership to be checked out there were no replacement parts available and there was no idea when there would be per the dealership when they called to check on parts. Estimated cost for repairs per dealership will be almost $1000. 00. Per dealership the rusted skid plate and straps lives gas tank vulnerable in a crash or to object intrusion. Also if straps rust enough could case gas tank to drop. Personally I feel this should be a recall problem since it is not something that would be easily found and could cause death or injury. It had not been found during route maintained and I only found it by accident when it was up on a rack and mechanic was showing me something else. More than likely there is a large amount of same model and year vehicles on road with this same issues that owners are unaware of. Jeep did a recall on 2005 Liberty before due to vulnerability of gas tank concerning the hitch. And should do the same with this as it leaves the gas tank vulnerable and should never be occurring. It is strictly a case of using inferior material on a vulnerable part.

The manufacturer was also contacted and made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 72,630. Am.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2009 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/19/2018

Fuel spills out of the filler neck when filling the tank. Filler neck is loose and wobbly several TSB's outline this issue but according to fca customer care, my car is not included in any recalls based on the VIN. Rollover valve inside fuel tank is most likely stuck and could cause fuel spillage, death and destruction if the vehicle is involved in a rollover accident.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/07/2015

The car does not shut off fueling when the gas tank is full, causing a large amount of gas to spew out of the car when filling gas every time. Causes gasoline to go everywhere, is a fire hazard. (it is not just a little bit of gas, the car is turned off, at the gas pump and at the gas station. ).

6 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

My 2003 Jeep Liberty was recalled in 2015 because of an exploding gas tank problem. I took it to a dealership but they refused to fix the problem, saying that rust on the threads of the frame mounting holes prevented them from mounting a hitch to fix the problem. I asked them if they could thread a bigger hole, use a bolt and nut,or just weld the needed repair part on - they refused. I just this day took my Jeep to a different dealership to have a different recall repaired so I asked them to check Chrysler - Jeep records on my Jeep and they have it listed as satisfied for the exploding problem. This is not true, they refused to fix it even after several e-mails to them. Now I see that there are still problems with the Jeeps exploding even after repairs have been made. How do I go about making this company do a proper repair on my Jeep?.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/02/2015

On September 2, 2015 I brought my 2006 Jeep Liberty in to a dealership, benson Chrysler, in greer SC for a rear structure reinforcement recall repair. After being left at the dealership for 4. 5 hours, I was informed that the recall repair could not be completed due to a large amount of rust on the bolts. I was told by the manager, brad that more than one technician look at the car and determined it could not be repaired. I left the dealership in despair with major concern because the recall involves a chance of the Jeep fuel tank leaking during a rear end collision which could result in a fire. Now as a mother and wife I cannot imagine continuing to drive the vehicle knowing the at any given time I could lose my car and possibly the life of me and my family. Please help me by addressing the issue of how Chrysler plan to handle this recall. I strongly feel it should not be ignored by suggesting me to continue driving a vehicle that pose such a great danger . Your attention is greatly appreciated.

8 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/12/2015

I bought this used vehicle 2 years ago. It currently has a recall on the gas tank. The way the dealership "fixes" this recall is to install a trailer hitch, which is laughable, at best. The testing agencies have proven that a trailer hitch is only minimally effect up to 25 mph and not effective at greater speeds. I requested the dealership "work with me" so that I could buy a safer vehicle from them. They are only willing to offer me the same trade-in amount as if I were trading vehicle solely because I want a new vehicle. I would keep this vehicle, if it were safe. I've contacted metal manufacturing businesses and requested that they build me a safe, strong gas tank and bumper to replace that which is currently in the vehicle. I am willing to pay the price to make this vehicle safe. The manufacturing facilities have refused to build any parts for me because the liability, after an accident, would revert to them rather than the burden being on Jeep. I have told the dealership that I have a safety problem but they don't seem to think I should get any financial consideration when trading in an unsafe vehicle that can not be made safe either by me or by Jeep. They will only offer me less than kelly blue book for trade in and have taken $1,000. 00 of the retail price of the new vehicle. This is inadequate considering they sold me an unsafe vehicle which can not be fixed. The dealership is darlings; po box 277; brewer, maine 04412-0277. Phone: 207-669-6570.

9 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/04/2015

When I fill up my gas tank, there is always a moderate amount of gas that comes out and goes down the side of my car. This has occurred at multiple different stations with all octane levels of gas. It ejects about . 1-. 2 gallons of gas from the fuel entrance. This occurs right before the automatic shut-off closes on the fuel pump.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/07/2015

Every time I fill up for gas, the automatic shutoff is triggered too late and a significant amount of gas spills out of the car, soaking the side of the car, the pump handle, the ground around it, and anyone standing next to the tank. This creates a significant risk of fire, and is also harmful for the environment. There was no attempt to top off the tank.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/03/2015

My son took his 2005 Jeep Liberty in for the recall where they are supposed to install a trailer hitch to prevent the gas tank from rupturing during a rear end collision. They told him his frame had too much rust on it and that they could not put on the hitch. It is a NY car and he now lives in arkansas. It is in normal condition for a 10 year old car driven year around in upstate NY. I am sure that they have not see as much rust on vehicles in arkansas so I think they are antsy about any rust at all. Or, they are looking for any excuse not to do the repair. The amount of rust just speaks to the original design/manufacturing quality if anything. It been over 2. 5 years since the recall was first announced and over a year to the point that they had enough hitches. He's been trying to get in for repair the last 6 months. I'm sure 3 years ago there was less rust on the frame but it has taken this long to get it in. Is Jeep off the hook because of rust? shouldn't Jeep be required to fix the problem on all vehicles that are still on the road? shouldn't they have another fix in place for Jeeps that can't accept the "hitch" fix? it appears from what I have read that Jeep purposely delayed the recall so there were fewer vehicles left on the road and now they get to make the call when there is too much rust. How am I supposed to feel that my son is safe if Jeep is allowed to say "pass" on repairing his vehicle. Who allowed Jeep to decide if a vehicle gets the fix or not. Why was Jeep allowed to have a fix that can't work on all vehicles still on the road? I have read there have been additional Jeep fires and deaths just in the last 6 months and Jeep still has the ability to refuse to fix some vehicles. How is Jeep being held responsible for these deaths? what options does he have? please let me know what steps I need to take to have his Jeep fixed correctly.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/22/2014

Chrysler installed a tow hitch a part of recall n46, but are advising owners that the tow hitch does not have sufficient strength for any towing. If it is not sturdy enough for towing, how can it be sturdy enough to protect the gas tank? is it now a projectile to puncture the tank? is Chrysler installing sub-standard hitches, which future owners may use? Chrysler when contacted indicated a warning sticker not to tow is included, however, the sticker reads "Chrysler recommends you remove the ball & ball mount whenever your vehicle is not actually in use of towing" also no wiring is installed with hitch which may lead some to tow without proper lights. Have they have created another safety hazard while trying to correct the other?.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/08/2014

There was a recall on my Jeep Liberty that the fuel tank can leak causing an explosion in a rear end in a crash. I have called several dealerships to fix the problem however I am on a waiting list of 250 people and they have run out of parts. In the meantime I am riding around with my daughter in the back seat. I am very upset that she may be at risk. The manufacturer must take responsibility and fix the problem sooner. I am not in a position to go and trade my car for another. I would like an offer for a refund if it cannot be fixed in a reasonable amount of time. Had I had known at the time this had such a safety risk I would not have purchased it as I always have my 6 year old in the vehicle with me. Since this is no fault of my own I am hoping for assistance and further instruction so that my family is safe.

14 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/26/2014

We received a recall notice approximately 4 months ago for the Liberty. The stated our vehicle has a small chance of experiencing a fuel tank leak during rear end collisions. The dealer is suppose to install an (ome) trailer hitch. We called the dealer over a month ago and the part is not available. If Chrysler knows of a hazard and issues a recall they should have the part available. We think that over 4 months is a reasonable amount of time to wait to have part available.

15 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2011 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/12/2014

Vehicle purchased new in April 2011. 3 years later in may 2014, the vehicle began spewing fuel out when refueling the vehicle at any and all gas stations. A significant amount of fuel runs down the side of the vehicle, onto the ground and onto pants and shoes if you are standing close to the vehicle. The gas fumes get inside the vehicle when you open the vehicle door. This poses a hazard to the person pumping the gas, to occupants inside the vehicle and to by standers. This is a well documented problem on the internet for Jeep SUV's. I have replaced the esmi housing 2 times, and this does not solve the problem. I am now told I will need to replace my entire gas tank because the rollover antispill valve inside the tank is defective. I found a recall called m11 which fixes only 2012 Jeep compass and 2012 Jeep patriot vehicles that have the same problem. I have called Jeep and they stated the problem has been resolved and they will not help me.

16 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2011 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/21/2014

During fuel fill-up, directly after the pump automatically shuts off, a large amount of gas will spill back out of the filler hose. This happens at all gas stations. During the first time, I was standing right next to the gas and had gasoline splashed on my pants a shoes. I have to estimate the amount of fuel to put into the tank as to avoid spillage. I am afraid that if I go to a full-service station, the attendant will be doused with gas at my expense.

17 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2010 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

I purchased this vehicle in early 2013 for my daughter. Ever since it was purchased we have noted the following: when filling the gas tank with the gas nozzle set to automatically shut off as soon as the tank is full there is alway a fairly large amount of gas that splashes back and out all over the side of the car and onto the ground. This occurs just as the tank is completely fill up and the nozzle shuts off. It is enough gas that it can be seen all over the side of the vehicle and on the ground. This obviously presents a potential hazzard for fire and is very unsettling. I have learned that this is a very common occurence in many Jeep models (including the 2010 Liberty's, but also other Jeep models) dating back to at least the mid-2000's and that there is a recall and coverage for this to be repaired (usually involving a new gas tank) for many Jeep models, but my particular model is not included in any recall per Chrysler customer care.

18 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/30/2013

I bought the Jeep from a friend last fall and this problem didn't exist until about 4 months after I had it. I always fill my tank when I stop for fuel and the first time this happened, while the tank was filling, I washed the windows. When it was almost full (I could tell by the amount on the pump), I grabbed the nozzle and got ready to squeeze the last bit in by hand after it shut off. Well, it didn't shut off and gas came pouring out, all over the vehicle, splashing my clothes and shoes! I thought it was an issue with the pump, so I brought it to the attendants attention & washed the side of the Jeep off. Next time I went to a different station & the same thing happened, so I didn't 'set' the pump handle anymore. . . . I held it myself and put my ear close so I could hear when it was almost full. Most of the time it worked, but it still came spewing out other times. The other night while having dinner with friends, one of the gals that works at dmv, who also has a Liberty, told me about the recalls on my model Jeep. I called my local dealership and he proceeded to tell me that the one had already been taken care of the month before I picked it up and the gas tank issue didn't apply to my model! are you kidding me???? I just finished telling him that it spews gas out every time I fill up if I'm not extremely careful with how full it gets! I can't tell you how much money I've lost from this issue 'that doesn't apply to my model'!!! not to mention the damage I'm sure it's doing to the finish (even though I try to get it all off)! not a happy camper and don't know that I'll ever buy another Jeep if this is the way they handle dangerous issues!.

19 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/14/2012

When the gas tank is full, a significant amount of gas spills out of the tank before the pump shuts off automatically. This was not a problem until recently, but now it has happened the last three fillups at three different pumps.

20 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/12/2012

The fuel overflows when filling tank which causes a vast amount of fuel to spill down the side of the vehicle and on the ground. . . . This is a great safety hazard and is clearly a major issue with these Jeeps. Made phone calls to dealer and Chrysler and was told there is no recall for this issue. Chrysler said to bring to a dealer and have it diagnosed. . . If dealer feels it's an issue that should be on a recall then call Chrysler back and they may be able to do something to cover the service.

21 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/09/2012

The vehicle was being filled with fuel from a standard fuel pump equipped with an automatic shutoff sensor. When the fuel tank became full, the sensor was not triggered, resulting in fuel spraying from the fuel tank, covering the side panel of the vehicle, the ground, as well as the person fueling the vehicle. This issue has been recurring 100% of the time when the vehicle is filled using an automatic shutoff pump. Different gas stations have been used with the same results. This is obviously a safety hazard considering that the person filling the tank and the car are becoming soaked in fuel, and an environmental issue due to the amount of fuel being spilled onto the ground.

23 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

For the past couple of years, my Jeep overflows every time I fill up at the gas station. As soon as the tank is full, and the gas nozzle clicks off, a significant amount of gasoline comes gushing out of the tank. I have done some research, and this seems to be a recurring problem among many Chrysler vehicle owners. This is not only a safety hazard, but causes damage to the exterior of the vehicle, and isn't good on the environment. I am really surprised that there has not been a recall or TSB about this problem as it is obviously a manufacturer defect. I have tried slowing down the flow rate once I feel the tank is nearly full, but this only prevents the overflow a small percentage of the time.

24 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 11/15/2011

Every time I fill my Jeep Liberty (2005) gas tank, the gasoline splashes out the fuel spout onto the vehicle, the ground and me (the person filling the tank). The amount of fuel that splashes out onto the car and ground when the tank reaches "full" is very significant enough to cause serious injury. This happens each time I fill the tank to the point where I can't fill the gas tank to capacity due to gas fume inhalation and spill on me and vehicle. I feel this is a serious problem that affects my health and safety and would like it fixed. Now I only fill the gas tank just below capacity so it doesn't leak fuel.

25 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

Every time I go to fill my Jeep up, the gas tank over flows. It shuts off after a second or two, but there is a significant amount of gas that goes on the floor, and all over my car!.

26 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

When filling this vehicle with gas, gas with spew out all over the car and the person holding the nozzle that is still in the gas tank. No matter what gas station used/pump and no matter how slow or fast it is going. I do not " top off". The spillage can be between a cup to a half gallon for no reason in particular. This is a very dangerous issue and needs to be resolved. I have to guess each time how much to put in so I can limit the amount of fuel spillage. This has been happening for years with no resolution.

27 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

Over time, the automatic shutoff on fuel pumps at gas stations began to not shut off until after a significant amount of fuel had spilled out (up to a half gallon). At first, I thought it may be the design of different pumps, so I experimented with different stations. I found that no matter what style pump or station I am at, this continues to occur. I have had to resort to estimating how much gasoline I need based on my gage prior to turning the vehicle off. Another option is to underestimate and never really have a full tank. I have found that severely slowing the pump down toward the end of what I think is the amount of gasoline I need for a full tank will usually (but not always) get the pump to shut off in time prior to overflowing. Although I have gotten better at estimating, there are still times that gasoline overflows. Aside from a fire hazard on the vehicle and on the ground at the pump, the gasoline can cause body damage over time. This has nothing to do with attempting to "top off" the tank after the pump shuts off. There is no top off room with this vehicle. I have had other vehicles that could take an extra gallon or more after the automatic shutoff, but this one does not. After looking at several forums and other online posts, I discovered that there are many other owners who have experienced this problem. I contacted Chrysler, left my information with them to be processed, and was told I'd be called back. They called back and left a voicemail saying that they would not be taking any action to fix it and that I could call back if I had any questions. I called back and could not get the agent that worked on my claim to call me back.

28 Other Fuel System Tank Mounting problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

Fuel is expelled when filling gas tank, which splashes on vehicle and person filling the tank. Gasoline fumes are very strong inside vehicle after filling tank, and requires windows to be open for considerable amount of time to relieve overley strong smell.
