1 Defogger Controls problem of the 2000 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

2000 Jeep Wrangler. The wiring to the a/c control switch shorts out and causes a minor fire. The switch has been replaced and it happened again. There was evidence of a previous fix in spliced wiring. The wiring harness is no longer available. Research on Jeep related web sites has proven to me that this is not an isolated incidence and occurs in many of the surrounding model years. There is a design flaw in the three posts that connect to the selector switch, they are to close to each other.

2 Defogger Controls problem of the 2006 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/01/2007

My wife and I were on a trip in our 2006 Wrangler (with 10,802 miles on it),it was very cold this night and windows were fogging up. We turned on the defroster for the first time and within a minute our windshield cracked. I called our local dealership and was told that my warranty did not cover this item and I had to pay them to replace my window. I later found out it should have been covered. 12 month or 12,000 miles. I think they might have a safety issue wit this so more people need to complain.

If hvac system is left on maximum heat setting for a length of time, the contacts in the fan speed selector switch melt causing failure of some or all of the fan speed modes and require switch replacement.

4 Defogger Controls problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/04/2004

I'm the original owner and sole driver of a 1997 Jeep Wrangler with 34,000 miles. I noticed the windshield defroster wasn't working when I drove home in a snow storm last week. Fortunately, the drive was a short distance. I easily determined that a plastic bell crank broke off its shaft that goes into the heater housing. I activated the defroster control to confirm that this part is the defroster bell crank. Nothing has fallen down the defroster duct to jam the door and cause the break. The door moves freely when turning the shaft by hand. I believe the break happened when the defroster was actuated during max heater fan, causing max air pressure on the defroster door with max torque on its shaft. The repair estimate from my local dealer is $855. I have a strong suspicion this is a common problem and doubt if many people go to this expense to fix it. I dont want to spend this amount of money on a defect that may break again. Since driving with frosted windshields creates a considerable safety hazard, I think a recall should be initiated to make this system more robust. A windshield defroster should last much longer than 34,000 miles.

5 Defogger Controls problem of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/04/2002

Problems with back and door latches breaking and jamming making it impossible to open the doors. Also, flimsy plastic sleeves that connect the a/c/fan/temperature knobs to the control panel break easily making it impossible to use the defroster and panel fans, heater, and a/c.
