1 Frame Rust problem of the 2002 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/19/2021

Purchased a 2002 Jeep from twin rivers auto sales, I did not receive a vehicle disclosure report and it was sold to me with a control arm bracket that was damaged was not attached to the frame which makes driving the vehicle impossible it is not attached to frame which could have cause otherand myself extreme harm or death. I was not informed of any problem with frame, after purchase the dealership told me to take it to ziebart and it would be undercoated for free, they tried to cover up with the undercoating where the control arm bracket became detached from the frame along with other defects in the frame I was only able to drive the Jeep from dealership to ziebarts for the undercoating and then had to have towed to my house due to the stabilizer link breaking because of the control arm bracket breaking away from frame due to rust, . I've tried call the dealership many times with no reply. I am thankful that no one was injured or dead if this would've happened while I was driving on hwy, the purchase price was 6700. 00 and then additional 5 new tires 600. 00 and two leaking and bent rims at 75. 00 for a total of 7375. 00 on a unsafe vehicle which the dealership new about . I am extremely disappointed, and frustrated with this situation. I need help getting this resolved but they will not rerun my calls and have hung up on me I have photos and a inspection saying that it was safe when far from being safe point blank this dealership sold me a vehicle that was u safe for others and myself to be on the road so now I am out all of this money and I can't drive the vehicle please investigate this situation so that they can not due business in this manner and I can resolve this with either giving me back my cost of the Jeep and tires and rims . I don't know what else to do or who to contact in trying to get my money back it is a lot of money for a Jeep I can't drive.

2 Frame Rust problem of the 2000 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/13/2020

2000 Jeep Wrangler tj with visible frame rust in front of rear wheels. Lack of drainage holes allows water to enter through factory drilled frame holes located in front and rear wheel wells and accumulate in the lower parts of the frame. By the time rust is visible on the outside of the frame, the inside has already been compromised to a greater degree as the rust progresses from the inside out. After researching online it seems to be a common problem with this model. There are readily available kits to repair these Jeep frames from several private companies which illustrates the severity and prevalence of this problem. Although the parts are available and inexpensive, the cost of installation as with most major vehicle repair, is dangerous and requires welding with specialized equipment and skills. A repair completed by an unqualified person may result in a vehicle unsafe for use on public roads. This vehicle has 175000 miles driven entirely (except one trip to atlanta) in tennessee. This vehicle has been driven almost entirely on paved public roads.

3 Frame Rust problem of the 2015 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/28/2020

Purchased new Jeep sahara in 2015 from the dealer. As of the posting of this complaint, the car has only 20,000 miles. Only today, I took the vehicle to the dealer because of pulsating effect on the stirring wheel whenever turning corners (left and right) as if the stirring wheel has no control over the wheels. The dealer indicated that it would cost about $6000 to replace various components to address the stirring wheel issue and further disclosed that underneath of this car including the frame was rusted so bad that it was not worth repairing and unsafe to drive. At a purchase price of $35,000 and with only 4. 5 years of only 20,000 miles of driving, Jeep is ripping off consumers.

5 Frame Rust problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/15/2020

Jeep Wrangler frames rust from inside out due to moisture getting in through upper part of frames where their are holes and settling to lower part of frame where their are no drain holes. Their may have not been an issue if Jeep had just put in drain holes in lower part of frame. It is a common problem in 1997 through 2006 Jeep Wranglers. I have this issue.

6 Frame Rust problem of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 10/15/2019

I started hearing a banging/clanging noise under the rear of this vehicle upon starting/stopping or reversing. The noise is best described as a sharp metallic clang. Undercar inspection revealed the frame has corroded to the point the upper control arm mounts have pulled away from the frame and the track bar that locates the axle side-to-side has separated from the rear axle housing along with the upper control arm mount separating from the axle housing. Repair of this vehicle requires replacement of the frame along with replacement of the complete rear suspension and axle housing. This same vehicle was reported to you 03 November 2016 for the same issue involving the center section of the frame rusting through causing the transfer case mount/skid plate to drop. Safety caps were installed on the frame at this time and the vehicle was placed back into service.

7 Frame Rust problem of the 2001 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 09/25/2019

My Jeep was making grinding sounds when I shifted gears. At first it was just a quick grind (metal against metal). Then it got progressively worse as this last week went by. It became almost impossible to shift into reverse and it would pop out of gear unexpectedly while going down the road. Luckily I didn't drive it much. I took it to my mechanic and he said I was lucky- my transmission(?) was tilted and sitting on something and that was causing the noise (the luck was that the transmission didn't fall all the way down). The description of the problem from prestige hi-tech is "check for noise/ grinding in drivetrain. Frame badly rusted out, cross member under transfer case, bolts pulled out of rusted frame. " I was then told it was unsafe to drive. Visually it is in great condition without rust on the body. Prestige said both sides of the frame are rusted through because of poor design. There were no holes for trapped water to escape through.

9 Frame Rust problem of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 07/11/2019

Heavy amount of rust throughout the bottom of the vehicle. Rust is located on frame welds, suspension connection brackets, and axel components. Photos were taken 10 days after purchasing from the dealership. I took the Jeep back and asked them to make sure everything was safe. The dealership looked at me like I was crazy and said yep that is normal to have rust. I asked it is normal to have this much rust on a brand new car. That is crazy. The steering jerks to the right and left constantly and you are always having to fight it to stay in a straight line. I have read from other report that this has become a common problem for this model year. I hope this issue will be resolved. I bought my car on 06/29/2019. The photos that are attached for your review were taken on 07/11/2019 thanks andrew howe howebvfd@gmail. Com 1-707-326-9708.

10 Frame Rust problem of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 07/08/2019

Frame rotted from rust where the rear suspension attaches to the frame. Too much rust to repair. Remaining vehicle is in good shape considering only 107k miles. Suspension broke free from the frame during normal road operation. I am told that the problem is epidemic with Jeep tj frames. Apparently so because there is noting available on the used parts market. Lots of tj bodies and parts available but no frames to go along with them.

11 Frame Rust problem of the 2000 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/10/2019

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. 13 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/28/2019

My Wrangler has sever rust damage on the frame, windshield frame, passenger rocker, and firewall. The frame has rotted from the inside out and caused the transfer case mounting bolts to pull through. The vehicle was in motion when this happened but luckily I was pulling out of my driveway and not on the highway headed to work. The windshield frame rust caused holes that allowed water to leak inside the vehicle causing the floor to rust from the inside out as well. These issues continue to happen again and again with each new revision to this model. When and what will it take for the company to be held accountable to their negligence?.

14 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/12/2018

The vehicle was in motion and pulling from my driveway onto a city street when this happened. Both drivers and passenger center sections of the frame rusted from the inside out with no visible indication on the outside of the frame rails. Water and debris enter through holes used in the manufacturing process and due to no drain holes in any of the lower points the water and debris rot the frame away. In my case the transmission pan on the drivers side of the vehicle fell free when the bottom of the frame rail on that side crumbled while entering a city road from a private drive at less than 5 mph. Damage was done to the transmission, transfer case, one axle, and the rear drive shaft. The vehicle was towed to a private garage but they were unable to place it on a lift to inspect the damage as the frame would have crumbled and snapped in additional places thus creating a hazard and possibly deadly situation the technician inspecting the damage. The vehicle was then placed on a flatbed and brought back to my home.

15 Frame Rust problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler. I've owned my Jeep for 15 years. It has been garage kept. We were changing the shocks a few weeks ago and noticed severe rust damage. The frame is rusting from the inside out. It's severe. Years before I was traveling down a 2 land rd and had to press my brakes harder than I usually would due to a car pulling out in front of me. At that moment I blew a brake line. I could not get my vehicle stopped. Luckily it's a 5 speed. I geared down as fast as I could and managed to pull it off the main road onto a hill to get it stopped. After inspecting my vehicle I found severe damage. The motors mounts are barely there. The part where the frame mounts to the body is actually missing one due to rusting completely out. Every single bolt and nut is rusted. Every single square inch of the frame is rusted. The problem is that Jeep poorly designed the frame with side holes for water and dirt to enter but did not design it with drainage holes on the bottom of the frame. Water and dirt enter and never leave. It's extremely unsafe to drive. I've read thousands of complaints online and this is a very common problem.

The contact was informed of NHTSA campaign number: 18v675000 (structure), but the vehicle was not included. The dealer and manufacturer did not provide a replacement vehicle and placed the contact's vehicle back on the market to be sold. The dealer later stated that the vehicle had been previously repaired per the recall. The manufacturer did not assist. The contact no longer owned the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 3.

18 Frame Rust problem of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 07/16/2018

Jeep Wrangler jl has poor welds on the frame around major components that will appear to fail. 2 welds appear to have been poorly repaired during manufacture and are rusting at major connection points to suspension components. This will lead to catastrophic failure while driving under normal driving conditions. Recommend investigation by NHTSA and recall. I am currently pursuing lemon law in north carolina. poor track bar bracket welds that have broken and will cause complete loss of steering. porous welds exceeding safety standards that could lead to catastrophic failure. slag on nearly every weld on the frame which paint will not adhere to. This will eventually cause rusting of the frame at the welds leading to potential catastrophic failure. lack of penetration on some welds that could lead to catastrophic failure over penetration on some welds that could lead to catastrophic failure overweld or weld drip on several welds weld splash on various part of the frame that will result in lack of long term paint adherence and increased likelihood of rusting of the frame.

19 Frame Rust problem of the 2000 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 07/05/2018

Frame totally rusted when bought from private seller. There are holes and rust everywhere. We took it to a mechanic who said it is a safety issue. The Jeep only has 114,000 miles on it! we paid 7500 and all we bought is a rusted frame but a beautiful vehicle. Now we must park it. We can't afford to fix it!!! Chrysler should have a recall. We could have been killed driving it!!!.

25 Frame Rust problem of the 2001 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/26/2018

Entire frame is rusted causing the transmission to fall out. Almost made my son crash into a tree after losing control of the vehicle.

26 Frame Rust problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

I have owned this vehicle since it was brand new. It has been garage kept for approx. 20 of its 21yrs. The rear frame where the trailing arms are attached to the brackets rusted out. The driver side trailing arms were almost ready to separate from the frame due to the frame rusting from the inside out. I had to cut out the section and replace it with a safe t cap patch. Cutting open the frame showed extensive rust on the inside of the frame. I checked my passenger side luckily not as bad as the driver side but will have to be replaced because it does have signs of rusting from the inside out in the exact same place. After doing some research it appears this is a common problem for the Jeep tj's. Jeep cut several holes in the sides of the frame that allowed water and debris access to the inside of the frame rail but did not put ant drain holes in the bottom of the frame to allow the water/debris to escape.

27 Frame Rust problem of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler

28 Frame Rust problem of the 2001 Jeep Wrangler

Frame is completely rusted only 90k miles. The transmission dropped because the structure holding it up was bolted to the frame and because the entire frame is completely rusted it cant be fixed. Its so bad a no body shop will fix it, rust kit is no help with how bad this frame is rusted. This is completely ridicules that a frame is this badly rusted at 90k miles.

29 Frame Rust problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 10/09/2017

I have an excessive amount of frame rust and my vehicle has less than 150xxx miles and this is a severe safety hazard. I have read that there are many people who have experienced this and I am wanting to know what you guys could do to resolve this issue. I bought this vehicle and I do not want to resale because I do not want to sell it in this condition and I want to keep it but I also do not want to drive because of this. There's a lot of life left in this vehicle and it only has 126xxx miles so I need help.

30 Frame Rust problem of the 2000 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 07/20/2017

Skid plate (which supports transmission) detached from frame due to rust on frame rails. The frame needed to be patched to reattach the skid plate.

31 Frame Rust problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/30/2017

Takata recall reporting this in hopes of having the issue resolved by NHTSA or Chrysler. . . I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler and like thousands of others, mine has developed major frame rust. I know this isnt going to be resolved anytime soon, but I need to get mine fixed now. Hopefully if there is ever a recall I can still be apart of it even after mine is repaired. Im going to be having it patched for now as a frame replacement will cost way too much for me at the moment. Myself, along with many others would greatly benifit from this being recalled. There are a lot of Jeeps out there driving on repaired frames. This issue should be resolved being as there are so many with the exact same problem.

32 Frame Rust problem of the 2000 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/16/2017

My frame has rusted out right before the rear wheels. This is resulting in a frame swap, and my mechanic said this is where he always see Wranglers get rust rot. It has always been garage kept, and had rust protectant every winter.

33 Frame Rust problem of the 2001 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

Frame rusted completely.

34 Frame Rust problem of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 10/22/2016

Jeep Wrangler (tj body) 1999 frame rust I was driving the vehicle at interstate (68-72mph) speeds when a severe vibration started suddenly and the manual transmission shift lever dropped to a lower than normal position. I pulled off in a safe area and inspected first for a flat tire and then looked under the vehicle. I noted the right frame rail had rusted through from the inside and the transmission-transfer case mount/skid plate ass'y had separated from the right (passenger side frame rail and dropped approx. 2-3 inches. This caused severe driveline vibration and erratic vehicle control.

35 Frame Rust problem of the 2001 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler with only 89,000 miles. The entire frame and undercarriage is rusted out and the transfer case has fallen off. I'm unable to drive it is so unsafe!! I can not believe that a vehicle only 15 years old would be in this condition!! I will be getting an attorney!! apparently there is not proper holes for drainage in the frame and it has caused the water to pool and rust out the frame. I still owe $6000 on this vehicle! I will never buy a Jeep again! I called Chrysler and because it's so far out of warranty and no recalls they are unwilling to do anything for me. . . Ugh.
