1 Ignition problem of the 2005 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 12/16/2012

In trying to start my vehicle, a part inside of the ignition broke. I am told I cannot get the part that broke and I must purchase an entire steering column to replace this part in between the key and the electrical component that starts my vehicle. It is a small part, and I cannot see having the entire steering column to replace this small part. I am told by Chrysler that the cost to repair this is about $800. 00. I think this is entirely unreasonable and irresponsible on the part of the manufacturer. This part is used daily and should not fail after 60,000 miles of wear. My seven year / 70,000 mi warranty has just expired and I am appalled that such a large company cannot afford to fix or even stand behind their product. This is obviously a defective piece of equipment to have failed so prematurely. It is used every time you start this vehicle, and upon closer examination of this part, it seems that it is made of sub-standard material to be a part that must endure daily use.

2 Ignition problem of the 2008 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 09/04/2012

While driving on the freeway, the windshield fluid sprays and the wipers go on at slow speed. Can't turn wipers or mister off and have to pull over with zero viability. Second time this happened, I lost acceleration pedal and Jeep stalls and starts while all this is going on. Took keys out of ignition and disconnected negative batter but everything still on. Pulled fuses for wipers and fluid to stop that. Had to pop clutch to stall out the Jeep. Very dangerous to have happen while in the carpool lane. Also to find out that the airbags don't work due to a bad clock spring.

3 Ignition problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/21/2011

Purchased my Jeep new in 1998 and I only drove it about 5000 miles per year. . In about 2009 I began to have some trouble with the gauges/speedometer. . They would stop functioning for periods of time. . . In about 2010 I there was an odor coming from the vents when I used my heater or ac. . Each time I took it to the dealer where I purchased the vehicle and the last time I had it checked was the end of September 2011. On November 21, 2011 I was driving to the grocery store with the heater on and smoke started coming out of the vents. . I turned off the heater & blower & then saw fire coming out from under the dash on the passenger side. I stopped & tried to put out the flames with my jacket. A lady stopped to help & called 911. While waiting for the fire department (just a few minutes) and I was sitting in the lady's car. . . I watched my Jeep start moving to the right (even though the ignition was turned off & the Jeep was in gear). . . It went into a grass field, burst into flames and was a total loss. I only had minor burns on my fingers & hands (from trying to put out the fire). I am extremely upset!.

4 Ignition problem of the 2008 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 08/24/2011

2008 Jeep Wrangler sahara with automatic transmission will intermittently not start unless I shift car into neutral or shift to neutral and back into park or continue to turn key in ignition several times. I have found countless similar issues on Jeep forums with same complaint. My local Jeep dealership cannot resolve problem after several attempts. Issue occurs up to several times a day now. Dealer will not do anything to resolve issue.

5 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/26/2011

I tried starting my 2006 Jeep Wrangler one morning and when I put the key in the ignition it just rolled over. I remover the lock cylinder and took it to the parts department at my local Jeep dealership. They told me nothing was wrong with it. Upon further inspection they found that the piece connecting the key cylinder to the switch had snapped somehow. They informed me the only way to replace this cheap little piece was to buy a new $400 steering column ( not including labor )and that this is the third one in the last month with the same problem. If that doesn't wave red flags then they, Jeep, certainly have no concern with the quality of their product.

8 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/10/2007

I've experienced some electrical issues with my 2007 Jeep Wrangler x. On four separate occassions the ignition has stuck in the starting postion. Second, and most disturbing, my Jeep lost power and the all the dashboard lights lit up, while traveling down the highway at 60-65mph. I talk to the dealership about the ignition issue, which they stated they could not re-create, therefore could not diagnose. My Jeep only has 1,700 miles. Below is the date of the major incident.

9 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/08/2007

Brand new 2007 Jeep Wrangler with 6,300 miles. Key became lodged in ignition and would not come out. Car could not be completely shut off so battery drain occurred. Took the car to the dealer and they don't know what the problem is. They kept the car to work on it without offering a loaner. Just wanted to report this in case there are other instances of keys becoming lodged in ignitions of new Chrysler / Jeep products.

10 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/24/2007

While traveling at night down a county road at approximately 60 mph the headlights went off for almost a second, the dash lights lit up like a christmas tree, the engine bogged and all accessories went off, and then came back on as if the ignition had just been turned on. The engine's power returned, and it continued as if nothing happened. The brake light stayed illuminated for 3-5 minutes after. Prior to this, there was a similar incident, though it was in the daylight and I was unable to see the dash lights light up or the headlights come on, however the engine bogged and the bas light lit up. The problem is intermittent and I have not yet had an opportunity to take the vehicle to the dealership yet.

11 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/16/2007

On two separate occasions I was driving less than 10 mph and coming to a stop when the engine stalled for no apparent reason. I was aware of this potential hazard due to my research on jk-forum. Com where other 2007 Jeep Wrangler owners have experienced similar problems to mine. I experienced the engine stalling issue around 3700 miles and a second time at approximately 7500 miles. No check engine light comes on, I just shift into neutral and restart the vehicle and continue to drive. However I cannot replicate this stall condition and I'm nervous about it happening at higher speeds.

12 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/04/2007

When coasting to a stop, going uphill on a highway, the brake pedal locks-up when you put your foot on the brake. After a few seconds, it releases and brakes normally. This has happened 3 times at the same intersection (may 2007, August 2007, sept. 2007). All three times resulted in near-miss accidents. The vehicle was in for repair for this problem, but the dealer could not replicate it. Even though he could not replicate the problem, the service manager advised us to get rid of the car because it was an obvious safety issue. On 9/14, while the car was still at the dealer, Chrysler announced a recall for this incident and advised customers that had experienced this problem to take the car to the dealer immediately. Ours has now been there for 6 weeks, with no end in sight. We have also had the engine stall when traveling on a twisty road near our residence. This has happened 1 time. This problem has occurred in the same model as ours, but was believed to have been addressed before ours was built. However, we still have the problem and no solution from Chrysler.

13 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/05/2007

While driving my 2007 Jeep x unlimited w/ automatic transmission, build date 12/06, on a long trip engine had been running for 4 hours straight. Approached a stop light at about 35 mph and engine stalled. All dash lights came on and radio cut out. I had my ipod hooked up to the auxiliary jack. Had over 1/4 tank of gas.

14 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/18/2007

On 4 different occasions now the Jeep has completely shut down under normal driving conditions in moving traffic. There are no symptoms that lead up to the incidents. At various speeds and at various times all of the lights on the dashboard will come on for a second, then they all go off, the radio shuts off, and the engine dies as if the ignition has been turned off. The engine and lights will stay off for an average of a 4 to 6 seconds and the vehicle will start back up as if nothing happened. This is a huge safety concern in the fact that during this time period all vehicle control is lost. This has happened at highway speeds. I have taken the Jeep to the dealership more than once regarding this problem. They report that they cannot duplicate the issue, and pretty much act as if it is a non-issue since they can't reproduce the problem.

15 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/18/2007

I was accelerating and had reached about 45 mph when the engine stalled and all the dash lights illuminated. This lasted for about 1 to 2 seconds, and then the engine came back on and all was well.

16 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/15/2007

I was leaving work on 3/15/07 and going down the interstate about 65 mph in the rain when the engine shut off. I was doing nothing but driving when the engine just shut off the gauges went nuts. I drive a 2007 Jeep Wrangler and it has only 2000 miles on it. I could have been hurt or even killed by this event. Today on my way back to work the Jeep was shaking badly lots of vibration at hiway speeds. Once again I just bought it back in December and now it shuts off and is one big vibrator going down the highway. I will be taking the Jeep back to the dealership and have it checked out. I will tell you right now they will find nothing wrong with it since there are no check engine lights on or any other symptons. I would like this investagated. I hope that there will be a recall before too many people have to die from this. But going down the highway at high sppeds and your engine shutting off and haveing no control over your vehicle is a perfect recipe for a serious accident.

17 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/06/2007

2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited 4 door, 1800 miles, 14 degrees outside and all lights and motor turned off. Then a few seconds later it restarted like I put the key in the ignition and restarted it. This happened while I was driving 35 mph.

18 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/05/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. The contact hears a cranking sound when starting the vehicle. The vehicle shakes and shuts off constantly. The mechanic was unable to diagnose the cause of failure. The current mileage is 50,100 and failure mileage was 19,040.

19 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/10/2007

While driving on flat paved road at 45 mph and it turned itself off for about 2 seconds and then came back on. Completely dead, it came back on by itself, (I guess inertia fired it back up as it has an automatic transmission. Called the dealership the next day, and they were unaware of any similar incidents. No dummy lights stayed on, so I didn't go by the dealership. . Read more...

20 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

I had no previous problems with the vehicle stalling. The vehicle was running with no noticable difference the day of the incident. I was pulling off from a traffic light and I felt the power from the engine cut out. I looked at my instruments and the tach dropped to zero and all the instrument lights went out. No more than one to two full seconds later all of the instrument lights came on and went through the normal sequence like the vehicle was just started. The engine came back to life and the vehicle ran as though there was no problem. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they said it did not store a code in the computer and they could not replicate the prblem. I have had no other failures. I don't remember the exact date of the failure, but I am sure I have a copy of the service record in my glove box from when I took it to the dealer. I will be happy to cooperate with any investigation and provide the documentation if needed.

24 Ignition problem of the 2000 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 10/02/2000

Upon starting of vehicle after fueling a 'pop' was heard from the engine compartment and engine stalled. Restarted engine with no difficulty and encountered a high idle speed. Checked to see if linkage was somehow binding or if vehicle had backfired through the throttle body. No evidence of damage due to backfire so proceeded to drive vehicle. After traveling approximately 40 miles of highway encountered a stop light, applied brakes to find that there were none. At that point realized that the sound heard upon starting was that of the vacuum booster hose seperating from the manifold. Noted that neither hose installed at this point are secured with a hose clamp. Reinstalled hose and have had no further occurrence.

25 Ignition problem of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Engine misfires while shifting up through the gears. I feels like plugs breaking down or poor fuel mixture, when at an idle there is poping from the tail pipe. I have had it back to the dealer two times they said that they could not find the same condition. It was there when I recived the Jeep new and it is still there. I called Chrysler and they called the dealer and recived the same report so nothing has been done yet. I need help to get this problem fixed. Thank you.
