37 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/15/2012

The steering wheel momentarily wouldn't turn until I forced it and broke what I'm assuming is the clockspring assembly. Very dangerous if my mom or someone else who wouldn't have been able to force the break while driving the Jeep. The airbag, abs, esp, and traction control lights all came on in the dash. There is a white ribbon wire now hanging out between the steering wheel and column.

38 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/10/2012

2008 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sahara has had electrical and engine issues including stalling out on multiple occasions as well as not starting. I have had the battery changed multiple times and have had issues such as all the lights, buttons, alert/warning lights going off simultaneously followed by complete engine and electrical shut-off requiring tow-service to dealership. The dealership replaced the battery and said everything was fine. After that I have had multiple stalls and non-starts and the dealership again says I need a new battery. I have had three batteries in three years. The horn has stopped working around 50,000 miles. The first time I brought it to the dealership they said they needed to replace my steering wheel and complete steering column. I decided I could live without a horn for a short while. The next time I brought it to the dealership they reported that I need a new clockspring which also controls my airbags which "might or might not still be functional. " seeing as I have had issues with the electrical components before, including malfunctions in the alert/warning lights, the dealership could not tell for sure if my airbags work or not. The locks to my Jeep have stopped working from both the inside door switch and the key fob. The dealership diagnosed this as a "total integrated power module" (tipm) malfunction resulting in loss of electrical power. They explained that there is a back-order on tipm pieces nationwide and they do not know when I could get mine replaced. When asked how the tipm could break, the dealership said there was no one way and that it "just happens. " my doors currently only lock/unlock by hand, and sometimes when I lock them by hand and return to my Jeep, the doors are unlocked. Furthermore, the automatic security lock feature when the vehicle starts moving does not work either.

41 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/31/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Wrangler. While driving at approximately 10 mph, the contact heard a rattle from the steering column. Upon examining the steering column, the contact noticed a bolt under the steering wheel was loose. The contact also stated that the bolt which mounted the driver side seat belt to the seat popped out when buckling the seat belt. The vehicle had not been inspected at the time of the complaint. The failure and current mileages were 680.

42 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/30/2010

Death wobble 2008 Wrangler 2nd repair, still not fixed. First time I noticed it in 2010, less than 25000 miles. I assumed it was the road condition. When I realized that it would happen under various road conditions, I noted other factors realizing that it seemed to occur at approximately 57 mph. At first the vibration was just annoying and intermittent. Then it got worse and I was scared because it shook so violently at 57 mph. I thought the vehicle was going to roll spontaneously. In March 2010, took it to a dealer; they said they couldn't recreate the problem so couldn't fix it. I called another dealer and the service tech (in 2010) mentioned, "Jeep wobble"- I googled it and found very little info- just some Jeep owner blogs that described exactly what I felt. The dealer fixed the problem (under warranty) by replacing the steering column shock (or something). Since I had it repaired, I still experienced the normal, minor vibration that happens around 55 mph. Recently (Jan 2013) the death wobble returned with a vengeance. Regardless of road conditions, at 57 mph it shakes so badly that it feels like I will loose control. I took it to the dealership and they said that they will replace the shock again and they mentioned that the part has been improved with brackets or some such. Of course, at 57000 miles, it is out of warranty and I had to pay the $230 for the repair. The tech told me that this is a common issue and I will probably have to replace it again in another 25000 miles. I call bs! the Jeep has never been off-road, never mistreated, always maintained. Neither dealer nor manufacturer ever mentioned this TSB during the 2013 repair. When I picked it up, it was not fixed. Jeep CO. Has agreed to reimburse me for all but $100 (deductible) but why do I have to keep paying for repairs on a known issue? vibration is so bad, it could cause me to wreck.

43 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

2008 Jeep Wrangler rhd postal vehicles used by rural carriers for usps. Those of us who purchased the vehicles are having issues with airbag malfunction indicator light and no horn use or intermittent usage. One item of interest possible cause is the springclock in the steering column as component that operates both horn and air bag circuits. This item has been a problem in years past with Jeep. Concerned with a deployment of faulty air bag issue mostly, trying to get my vehicle in for a complete investigation. Technicians are by appointment only when they are in. Forums at ruralinfo. Net confirm others are having these same issues. My vehicle has 50k miles when problem occurred.

44 Steering Column problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

Brake light has been in forever, had checked, not an issue but. . . Began noticing on highway. Not so severe to have to stop to regain control. About a year ago iit happened at lower speeds, as few as 35mph, any uneven surface, bump, texture or level change sets it off. Tapping or use of the brakes. "death wobble" occurs. A slight tremor radiating from steering column then through the entire Jeep. So intense that it feels like the tires are turning sideways, maintaining control, steerin and braking extremely difficult. Regular braking does not help. Hars brake only. Haven't come to complete stop. I've always stopped, put back into park and turned it off. Thinking maybe some sort of reset may occur. It helps me to reset my own self anyways! very scary! especially if in a vendor curved part of roadway. . Brake light still on even after inspected (?) took into shop. Mechanic said ball joints needed replaced. Death wobble went away for a few weeks and it's back. Prior alignments~ only regular adjustments required. I tried to pay attention after this 'fix' and determined that braking (even just a tap) starts it and any surface change in the road older Jeeps had a simply fix, tightened a bolt on steering colum. My son is in training, did a visual inspection of the steering colum. Says seemed to me some extra play, nothing like a bolt loose but dark out, multiple components along column, unsure without a lengthier inspection. Nothing by sight. We stopped driving and took it in for inspection/replacement of front end balljoints. Tires have an unfamiliar pattern of wear. Using factory recommend tires, size and pressure. Very little off road. Mostly driven for in town/ highway driving. I hope this helps. Very very scary when this happens. Oh I've tried to outrun. Doesn't work. Lately I've shifted to 4thbeing and can usually regain control. .

45 Steering Column problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/04/2008

While driving north at 65mph in the middle lane of a three lane (northbound)freeway, a small bump was encountered and the steering column shook violently until the vehicle was brought to a complete stop, still in the middle lane. The dealer said it was a steering damper problem ( a known "technical recall") and a "weak damper" (part # 02152001) was replaced with a "heavy-duty" steering damper (part # 52060058ae). The vehicle was returned today and driven without incident. The nature of the problem could have resulted in serious accident/injury but did not. The driver is not aware that Jeep has every issued a recall concerning this problem.

46 Steering Column problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 08/28/2008

I have noticed an increase in give / leeway in the steering column at approx 15,000 miles. The problem increased to the point where there is a popping felt through the steering wheel as well as both the accelerator and brake pedals when light pressure is placed on the front wheels while turning (turning at low speeds through traffic circles, going over uneven pavement while turning, small bumps in the road, etc). The feedback felt continues to get worse until the point it feels unsafe to operate the vehicle. I have had the vehicle back into the only 2 Jeep dealerships within a 90 mile radius of my place of residence more than 3 times. At first the front end sway bar was replaced, to no avail. The 2nd time the steering column shaft was replaced, with only a short term alleviation of the problem. At first when the shaft was replaced, the steering felt as new (tight, with good control, and no feedback). After less than another 5,000 miles on the new shaft, the problem has returned and continues to get worse (currently at 23,000 miles). After speaking with the service manager at a local Jeep dealership, he has indicated there is no problem aware within Jeep to his knowledge, but has noted that he has had a few vehicles in his shop with the same problems.

47 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/23/2006

Took my 2006 Jeep Wrangler sport right-hand drive to an independent service garage for routine oil change at approx. 6900 miles. They tested all the lights and found that both main brake lights were not functioning, and not due to bulb failure. The third light, above the spare tire, was working properly. I took it to the dealer under warranty, where they determined the problem was a faulty steering column electrical stalk system assembly. No accident occurred, though such a brake light failure could potentially cause a very serious crash. The dealership replaced the faulty steering column stock assembly under warranty, and the defective part was not saved.

48 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 09/10/2005

1. I was making a sharp turn when the steering wheel became stuck, then with a little force applied there was a snap and the clock spring broke. This resulted in the horn, cruise control, and air bag ceasing to work. 3. I have this scheduled to be fixed by the dealer.

50 Steering Column problem of the 2002 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/04/2003

Steering column moves side to side and after repeated movement the tilt steering lever loosens up and the steering column moves up and down. The dealer has made repeated attempts to repair the column but denies that there is a defect. I first noticed the problem in June of 2003 when the tilt steering becmae loose going around a corner. I recovered the vehicle and did not have an accident but was close. When I examined the problem I noticed the steering column moves side to side approximately 1/4". Other vehicles that I have examined do not have this much free play. The dealers has attempted repair on this four times but the original steering column is still in the vehicle. I am not currently driving the vehicle as it does not meet maine state inspection standards and the vehicle is unsafe to drive.

51 Steering Column problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/01/2001

1998 Jeep Wrangler 4. 0l, exhaust manifold crack at 30,000 miles. Jeep/Chrysler refused to fix, stating only catalytic converter covered under warranty. Crack occurred in a weld joining the two pipe, almost 3/4 of the way around the pipe, causing cosiderable noise, and loss of power. Guages fail periodically, but come back on there own, after a few minutes. Air conditioner drains onto floor inside vehicle on long drives and can even short out the radio. The steering column also sqeals like an old door when its cold outside.
