I purchased the Jeep Wrangler as the first owner in 2018. I immediately felt inconsistencies with the steering. The steering felt loose. At the time I expressed my concern to the dealership that I purchased the Jeep from, I was told that there was a recall on my Jeep for the death wobble and that it was likely the result of that. The recall work was completed within the first 12 months of purchase. The recall repair did not resolve the issue. The steering continued to feel loose and as time went on became more evident. When driving on the expressway onto an exit at 40-50mph I followed the slight curve and the steering felt unstable and wandered. The best way to describe what occurred would be that it felt like the frame was falling off the wheels. This continued more frequently and last week became unmanageable. While driving 70mph down the expressway, I was unable to maintain control of the vehicle. It felt like I was driving a boat on water. I felt confident that the frame of the Jeep was leaving the wheels. At this time I noticed that the gears were slipping as well. I made an appointment to have my transmission examined. The earliest available appointment is 6 days out, so I decided to sneak under the Jeep to see if there was a transmission leak. What I observed was shocking to find on a 2018 vehicle and considerably overwhelming. My degree is criminal science, so far from having any automative/engineering experience and knowledge, but contextual clues are evidentiary clear to me. The feeling of the frame being displaced from the body of the vehicle is a probable result. I have a deep concern with the current condition of the welding of the frame and the condition of the underbody.

Very loose steering from factory, with original ae steering box. Had the recent TSB done that replaced with aa (black) version of box and steering is still loose, a lot of freeplay and vehicle wanders at speeds above 40. Still dangerous.

Steering is so loose that at highway speeds the continued motion back and forth on the steering wheel that is required to attempt to keep my vehicle in it's lane causes it to wobble and become unsteady on the roadway. It is loose all the time but is most dangerously noticeable when the vehicle is driven at higher rates of speed. The date listed below is just one date that I specifically remember although it happens all the time.
The steering is very loose, requires constant correction on highway driving. I've taken the vehicle back to the dealership multiple times, however they claim this is "normal" for a Jeep.

2020 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sahara complaint. VIN: 1c4hjxen8lw285111 date of purchase 07/20/2020 I leased a brand new 2020 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sahara with a 2. 0 4cyl turbo. I am loving everything about the car except the steering. The steering on this vehicle is terrible and dangerous!!! the steering is loose and on it's own, it will drift or float to either side, right or left, on a smooth dry surface at virtually any speed. It is even worse at higher speeds. It cannot steer straight like any normal vehicle. This is a seriously dangerous problem that Jeep should be instituting a recall and repair order for! I've instructed my family members to contact our attorney if anyone is involved in a crash with this vehicle that receives injury, serious bodily injury or death. My family members will inform our attorney that this dangerous problem existed since the day it was purchased and that the manufacturer (Jeep) knew about this from numerous complaints from customers, and yet so far has failed to institute a recall for repair. Check online and you will find many owners complaining about their new Wrangler's steering problem. Online aftermarket companies are attempting to sell products that "may" resolve the problem. Why should any new owner have to spend money on an after market product for a brand new car? if Jeep does not initiate a recall, I will write complaints and negative reviews everywhere I can and this will be the last time I purchase one. I will recommend to everyone not to purchase a Jeep product because of this gross negligence.
Loose and wandering steering. I purchased this vehicle new in January 2019, it currently has 5,039 miles. Since new, the steering has been loose and wanders around the lane of travel at speeds over about 30 mph on paved, well maintained highways. If you take your eyes off the road to check gauges or controls, you have to quickly make an adjustment to keep it centered in the lane. It has low mileage in the 18 months of our ownership because we are afraid to drive it. We want to avoid a crash and injuries at all cost. The steering wheel can be turned either direction for several degrees without response at highway speeds. I reported this issue to my dealers and they have made three different attempts to correct the issue, but they are unable to based on the design. The last attempt, they advised they had spoken to their area Jeep/fca representative and were advised that Jeep is aware of the issue and a correction will be coming in the near future. The asked me to be patient. That was over one year ago and still no correction. I'm sure this issue has likely caused many preventable crashes and injuries and will continue to do so until it is resolved by the manufacturer. It's time for NHTSA influence.
Steering is very loose, causing serious problems keeping the Jeep straight, or in my lane, on all paved roads, at all speeds.
The steering is loose and vehicle wanders at highway speed. It's very difficult to keep in a straight line at highway speed. Feels extremely unsafe. Dealer says this is "normal" for a Jeep.
Purchased a new Jeep Wrangler sahara unlimited 6/22/2020 with 340 miles. The steering is very loose, 1 1/2-2" of free play in steering wheel, near impossible to keep the vehicle in the lane, the looseness is noticeable at all speeds, but becomes harder to control at highway speeds. I have been in the new car business for 34 years as a service manager, 6 years with Jeep, and the steering gear has slack in it. The Jeep was scheduled to be repaired 6/7/20, after being at the dealership all day, it was delivered back to me, and told it was normal and "Jeep like". I showed them a video of me driving at 55 mph and moving the steering wheel side to side 2" with the Jeep staying in a straight line, unsafe and unacceptable, I commute 110 miles a day in this vehicle.
Vehicle wanders inside of lane at highway speeds. Constantly needs redirecting of steering wheel to keep direction straight. Steering feels loose. Dealership says that this is the way it is with Jeep Wranglers. Feels unsafe.
Steering wheel loose and has a lot of play. Also when driving on the highway over 50 mph and hit a pot hole or a small bump, vehicle rear wobbles and almost have to come to a complete stop.
During low speed and highway speeds the steering feels loose. It will not track straight and has a tendency to "road walk" causing the driver to continually monitor and correct the path of the Jeep. He Jeep will suddenly change direction when the road surface changes pitch causing the Jeep to quickly veer to the next lane or guard rail. There appears to be a dead spot in the steering of about 3 inch's from right to left. On level surface the vehicle requires constant path corrections.
The steering issue began as a shutter and vibration at highway speeds when going over a bump or a rut. The dealership has taken the vehicle in and kept it on three separate occasions. The issue has subsided a bit but now the vehicle's alignment is off and the steering is very loose. You have to keep the steering wheel turned to the one o'clock position, to the right, while driving at highway speeds or the Jeep will drive off of the left side of the road. The vehicle constantly drifts while driving so you need to maneuver the wheel back and forth constantly to keep the Jeep on the road. The wheel is sloppy with a lot of play for the first inch or two on either side. The dealer has not been able to fix this issue and it is an absolute safety hazard. This is my only personal vehicle so I don't have another option. I purchased the Jeep brand new and it has never been in an accident or abused. This Jeep needs to be recalled or replaced. It is unacceptable that best Jeep Chrysler in Plymouth, MA won't correct the issue or replace the Jeep. The fm radio, bluetooth, and clock are also broken and they have not been able to fix that either.
While driving the Jeep, it is almost impossible to keep the vehicle in a straight line. I have to constantly adjust the wheel to keep myself in my lane, otherwise I drift from left to right. It does not matter the speed either, if I don't keep correcting myself, I just end up in the lane next to me or almost crossing over the lines. Besides the vehicle wandering all over the road, the steering is very loose.
The steering is loose and vhicule wanders at highway speed. It's very difficult to keep in a straight line at highway speed. Feels extremely unsafe. The dealer bas changed the stearing dumper and that's no better. It's been like this since the purchase in December 2019.
Steering is loose and car wonders over the center line. At hiway speeds it is unsafe.
Steering is loose which manifests as wandering while driving. Constant correction is needed to stay in a lane. This is fatiguing and could lead to an accident.
Tl- the contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, the power steering loosened and failed operate as needed. The failure would occur without warning and would cause the contact to lose control of the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to allen mello Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram 13 marmon dr, nashua, nh 03060 where the vehicle was unable to be diagnosed. The contact spoke with another dealer bonneville and son Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram 625 hooksett rd, manchester, nh 03104 where he was informed that they are unfamiliar with the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 9,000. Jo.
The steering is loose and has play in the steering wheel. It is difficult to keep the Jeep going straight because you constantly have to make steering corrections. The dead zone play in the steering wheel happens while stopped and driving.
Steering: vehicle wanders and steering is loose in efforts to correct direction. Angle of road surface such as crown sometimes results in unexpected direction change toward another lane and the slop in the steering itself makes it challenging to correct without over-correction. In traffic this results in intense effort to maintain position which results in increased physical and mental fatigue over relatively long drives. The steering seems inconsistent as it varies from minimally problematic to a white-knuckle driving experience. Have not been able to determine if this is due to road condition versus steering component. Dealer has performed the v41 steering damper recall which improved only excessive wheel shudder when driving over road imperfections and did nothing to improve the wandering/looseness. They also did adjust alignment which they said was off slightly. No notable improvement from that. I have advised dealer that the repair effort was not effective and I will now have to take the vehicle back in, but they tend to just provide the it's a Jeep - that's the way they are line. The steering in the Jeep is not typical and I see similar complaints in forums where a single thread has half a million views. Something is not right here.
Steering feels loose and has play. Unsafe.
My steering is loose at highway speeds even after the dampener recall and new trac bar were installed. It is dangerous on the highway even with a small amount of wind.
The steering is very loose. You can turn the wheel several inches before the car reacts. Difficult to keep the car between the lines. The tire inflation has been checked.
In July of 19 I purchased my 2018 Jeep Wrangler sport s 4dr from a local dealership. About 1000 miles into ownership I began noticing loose steering with excessive play. I took the Jeep in for service and a flash TSB was performed, the problem was better, but still present. At the same time I was also part of the weld recall no repair needed. I started noticing shuttering at highway speeds after hitting bumps. I had the suspension checked when I went in for the second weld recall notice on my Jeep in 01/19, it was ok according to the dealership. 02/19 I experienced excessive vibration/shuttering of the frontend after hitting a bump at highway speeds. Did not stop until I slowed to about 40mph. Took to dealership, an upgraded steering dampener was placed on the vehicle. Shuttering continued. 10/19 shuttering gets worse. While driving about 55mph steering locks up on a curve two times, like the power steering dropped for a couple seconds then returned. Taken to the shop, dampener replaced again, cant duplicate lock up. I contacted Jeep cares and fca. 11/19 vehicle is taken to the shop again for 2 weeks. Shop acknowledges steering is looser than it should be. Steering gear is replaced. After getting vehicle back steering is tight but now wandering all over the place, cant keep Jeep in a straight line especially at high speed. 12/19 vehicle is taken back to shop alignment is performed. After a couple hundred miles I notice steering is loose and there is a dead spot in the steering again. I relay this to fca. 01/19 fca regional tech drives vehicle, says its driving as designed, checks alignment and adjusts caster. Problems with loose steering and deadspot persist. Jeeps degree of wandering depends on conditions seems even more difficult to operate on windy days than it was before steering gear change. Takes constant corrections to keep it going straight.
After about 2 months of ownership the steering became loose and after getting up to about 40mph the car will start to sway on the road by itself with about 3in of neutral steering space that has to be dealt with to keep it on the road.
Wrangler steering is loose and vehicle wanders within a lane, often crossing lanes if not perfectly controlled. Hands move two to five inches while you try to keep a straight center path with the vehicle. Any movement, say turn up the radio sound via the knob, often results in the vehicle swerving into another lane. Difficulty is more noticeable when driving on the highway at highway speeds. This started to happen immediately after receiving vehicle from dealer. Vehicle was taken back to dealer and service department stated all specs were correct and vehicle is operating as it should. Dealer stated that fca changed the steering of the vehicle to better handle off road driving and that the wandering during normal driving was normal. I feel the vehicle is unsafe if the utmost concentration to keep the Jeep strait is not followed. At 60 years old I am not concerned for myself as much as the younger teenagers and adults that easily get distracted etc.
While driving at highway speeds, the steering become sloppy and unresponsive. This causes the vehicle to wander from side to side. The steering is loose, so any correction to prevent the wandering is not enough or too much. This causes a loop where the wandering becomes side to side driving. At these speeds it is in danger of flipping or hitting another car. Any wind or seam in the road is also cause for concern, as the outisde forces cause the driver to correct the vehicle. With the steering correction is nearly impossible. 2 events in 1 week of ownership resulted in letting the car coast to a stop (on highway shoulder) in attempt to regain composure after excessive side to side wandering nearly flipped the car. It is unsafe to drive.
The steering is very loose and extremely dangerous on the highway. While driving on the highway, it is extremely difficult to steer straight. I have to make large steering wheel adjustments just to remain in the lane. Driving this Jeep is very unsafe at highway speeds.
My brand new, 2018 Jeep has 768 miles on it and the steering is loose to say the least. If the front track bar bracket (solid front axle in line with the body of the vehicle) still has welds that are off seam, can cause the bracket to detach from the frame and can cause loose, vague steering to a complete system failure. Recall statement: "the separation of the front track bar bracket from the frame may cause a reduction in the steering response, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning," this is my third Jeep and 2nd Jeep Wrangler. The dealership states they repaired the recall, 2 months prior to the purchase date, but I do not believe they did. If the dealership claimed the repair to Jeep I am sure they pocketed the money. This is a huge safety risk as the steering is recalled as a safety recall - the dealership should be liable and Jeep needs to inspect that the recalls at the very least one and those that claim to do the repairs and do not - should have their ability to offer Jeep products revoked.
Steering is loose, most noticeable around 50mph when you are driving straight. It can often be white knuckle driving when cars are around. The response for slight corrections is lacking. There seems to be an inch or two of play in the wheel before it responds. You drift in the lane and feel unsafe. My Jeep is around 1 month old, only has about 800 miles on it. Both my wife and I commented on it when new. It's our first Jeep, so we chalked it up to just being a Jeep thing. After reading about the investigation, we realized this is likely a bigger problem and it's not a Jeep thing.
Since new, vehicle has wandered from side to side on the road with no steering input. Steering feels loose and does not respond instantly to input. We returned the vehicle to the dealership and they performed a steering "flash" that was supposed to correct this problem. The flash did not seem to change anything with the way the vehicle steers and wanders from side to side. We were told that this is just how all Jeeps steer. It seems unreasonable that you must constantly provide steering wheel input to attempt to keep the vehicle within it's lane. A relaxing drive in this vehicle is impossible. It requires you to be hyper aware of exactly where the vehicle is drifting within it's lane to provide corrective input. Simply stating this is how they all drive is not acceptable. Both the loose steering feel and lane drifting/wandering happen at all speeds. Highway or city.
The steering is very loose and dangerous to drive at speeds over 50 mph. This is not a safe vehicle and will result in injury or death to the driver and its occupants.
When traveling on the highway at or above 60 mph, the Jeep wanders and doesn't maintain a straight line. The steering is very loose and very difficult to remain in my lane at all times. I feel very unsafe traveling on the highway with this vehicle.
Steering is loose, way to much play around center - about 4 inch - without response, car drifts.
Driving at highway speeds, the steering feels loose and the Jeep tends to wander left and right. Under certain circumstances, such as curves in the highway, especially going downhill, controlling the direction of the vehicle becomes difficult and scary. The only thing to do under such circumstances is to slow down sufficiently to maintain directional control. On sept 1, 2019 I've almost ran into the median divider on I-70 west, west of evergreen CO. On sept 2, 2019, I was struggling to stay in my lane heading east on I-70 into denver, just east of golden, CO.
