Front Air Bag Problems of Kia Motor Optima

2006 kia Optima. Consumer writes in regards to recall notice and repairs concerning air bag clock spring contact assembly. The consumer stated he was charged a $113. 00 for diagnostic testing. However, according to the recall letter, in addition to providing a lifetime warranty for the driver's air bag clock spring contact assembly, kia was to replace the clock spring contact assembly free of charge.

Passenger airbag says off when passenger is sitting in the front seat.

In a 2006/2007 kia Optima, "passenger airbag off" light continuously illuminates regardless of seated passenger weight or occupancy. This could lead to failure to deploy airbag in a frontal collision resulting in serious injury or death. Resetting the computer temporarily deactivated the light, but problem persists.

Passenger air bag does not activate when passenger is in seat. Brought in to dealer, while still under warranty, could not find anything wrong. Passenger visor broke and hangs in line of vision. Researched and found this to be a common problem with this vehicle on both visors. There is a defective piece used in the arm of visor that shatters. This is a very dangerous problem, as the visor will not stay in upright position and drops down into line of vision. Both of these issues are a common complaint of this vehicle. Vehicle is no longer under warranty, therefore, can't afford to repair defective visor that should have been redesigned with stronger parts.

How many consumers have to complain about the air bags in 2007 kia Optima (mostly passenger) before a recall is issued. This is a dangerous situation. I've already brought my vehicle to dealer during warranty period and they could not duplicate problem. What is the point of airbags if they don't deploy when needed? someone, if not already, will be seriously hurt or killed. There are numerous complaints about the airbags, and those are just the ones that consumers took the time to report. What about the visors with the defective internal piece that shatters and leaves the visors in a hanging position. This is dangerous!! these issues have been going on since the vehicle was manufactured and no recall was ever issued. Again, these are severe safety issues. What does it take and how many complaints and injuries does it take to have a manufacturer correct a safety issue?.

When my wife sits in the passenger side of our kia Optima approximately 20% of the time the "airbag off" light never turns off. We have followed the instructions from the dealer on how to properly sit in the seat etc. We have had the dealer look at the vehicle twice and so far they have refused to fix it. My wife's weight varies from 130-140lbs. At my first visit to the dealership they told me the weight limit was 110lbs. This past visit we were told the limit was 120lbs. I have been told by NHTSA that they test with a crash dummy weighing 108lbs so regardless my wife is well outside of the weight thresholds. This is a duplicate of original complaint 10299891. I was told by NHTSA that adding the weights of occupants would be beneficial to them.

Bought a new Optima 2008. The passenger airbag is almost always off when a passenger is seating normally on the front seat. The dealer refuses to fix it despite the car being brand new.

Dealer has put off for over a month repairing functionality of passenger air bag system. System does not work. One month with run around and dealer seemingly unable to express concern over this safety issue. Kia customer service notified.

The passenger air bag does not activate with a 115lb woman in the seat. I have researched the web and understand that the air bag must activate in the event the occupant is 100lb or more. The manufacturer has indicated that their spec. Is 115lb.

While at a complete stop because of road construction, the consumer's vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle at 40 mph. Upon impact, none of the frontal air bags deployed, and the driver's side seat belt failed to retract. Also, driver's side seat back reclined backwards onto the rear seat. Driver sustained severe bruises to chest/breast bone/lungs/heart/lower abdominal, and left leg.

I was involved in a crash on Nov 02. I was broadsided by a truck (f150 type veh. ) in an intersection. As a result, my roof bowed and the entire drivers side from wheel well to wheel well was caved in like a half moon. The frame was pinned up against the drivers seat. The seat belt did not lock but released me and none of the air bags deployed. I suffered back and neck injury and was transported by amubulance to a nearby hospital. The vehicle was in storage. I contacted the manufacturer numerous times as did my attorney. All we received was the run-around for approx. Six months. No return calls, excuses, unable to get a release to have a kia auditor look at the car, etc. My insurance company and my attorney sent them the release twice and still no response. Consequently, I deployed overseas (military) and upon my return found that the car had been disposed of (destroyed). I still suffer from my injuries and my attorney is still handling my case.

While driving another vehicle ran into consumer's vehicle at 300-40 mph head-on and none of the front air bags deployed.
