This car was purchased in 2017 from dealership. This started occurring mid January 2018 and had gotten progressing. This cannot be normal. The vehicle is reading this as there are messages alerting me on the display and through the digital system.

4 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2009 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 06/04/2013

Vehicle air bag trouble light illuminated on dashboard. When brought to the dealer, we were told that a seat sensor was defective and needed replacement at a cost of $1500. This is on top of a recent $2700 transmission replacement on the same vehicle one month prior. Since we are still paying for the transmission repair, we chose to drive the vehicle without the air bag system functioning properly which we realize is a safety issue, but we cannot afford another expensive kia repair.

10 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2009 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 01/12/2009

Shortly after we purchased this car the air bag (srs) light came on and stayed on. Took it back to dealer. Scan test found code b1447 oc ecu defect, found poor connection at control unit. They cleared the code and stated the unit was working now as designed. Everything good until 10/6/14, 57000mi. , 52 days out of basic warranty. Called kia dealer, wanted to scan it for $95. 00. Said they would apply scan fee to repair bill. (ill bet they would!) took it to a local tech. Who has a high tech scanner. I don't have the code but he told me it has a defective pressure sensor in the passenger seat and it would be an expensive repair. They said they cant just throw money at it hoping to replace the bad part by luck as the sensors are $1200. 00 a piece and they told me there were 5 sensors in the seat. 20 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

I just purchased a 2006. 5 kia Optima. My concern is when my wife sits in the passenger seat; the air bag does not arm. Kia states that the new standard (NHTSA) states that one must be over 130 lbs. If true, I find that unacceptable. There is no statements within the owners manual or is there a placard on the dashboard warning one must be over 130 lbs. Should I have an accident, who is liable, you or kia. Please let me know the rules, the law and if this is so, what individual, felt individual less than 130 lbs do not deserve that safety feature.

21 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 09/04/2006

Our concern relates to the safety of our vehicle. A nice feature of this car is the DE-activation of the passenger airbag when that seat is vacant; however, there appears to be a malfunction. The dashboard lights up as passenger air bag off even when a passenger is seated there. This is a huge safety concern of ours.

23 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2001 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 08/03/2006

When I first brought the car and drove it, the lights became dim in the inside and the headlights. The radio turned off and on, took it to dealer 4-5 times for problem and they could find nothing wrong. The car doesn't pick up spend when going over hills not even little ones. The gas needle does not read full even when the tank is practically overflowing with gas. Reading a full tank of gas happens every once in a while. Check engine light comes on . Have taken to shop and was told that my spend sensor is going out and that is why the car is going from 1st to 3rd gear and skips 2nd altogether I've only had the car for one year the warrinty is gone and I was never offered the extended warrinty and really didn't think of it since the car was only 4 yr old. Back brakes have also gone out at least I think so they started grinding with no warning 2 days ago I'm going to have them checked this weekend. Air (never used befoe this summer)doesn't get cold like it should. Door lock making a crazy sound on drivers side, believe the motor is going out on power locks they also tend to not want to unlock sometimes. Atenna broke. Air bag light came on and won't turn off. Also how can I find out if any recall items have been fixed on my car or not or if they still need to be replaced.

24 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

We purchased a 2006. 5 kia Optima a few months back. This car is equipped with a feature, the DE-activation of the front seat passenger airbag when the seat is vacant. My wife weighs about 104 lbs and does not always activate the switch as indicated by the fact the warning light does not go off, and therefore is unprotected if there was a frontal crash. The dealer checked and indicated that the switch is functioning as designed. This problem occurs about 50% of the time. Sometimes she can get the indicator to go off by moving around and/or bouncing on the seat. The other fun fact is that we can be riding along and the indicator will come on or if it is on it will sometime turn off. There does not appear to be any rhyme or reason for the activation or DE-activation of the sensor switch. I was told by the dealer that the sensor switch can not be by-passed because of federal regulations.

Failure Date: 03/23/2004

A lady pulled out in front of me to make a left turn, I tried to stop, but I couldn't, I hit her @ 20 mph, my front bumper, dead center into her left front tire. My air bags didn't deploy and hers did. I have a 2001 kia Optima lx. My fear is, if the car is fixable, will the bags work or will they come out on me sometime going down the road. I've talked to the dealer and have gotten different stories on where the sensors are located. Now the say the air bag sensors are right in front of the transmission and I didn't get hit hard enough to make them deploy. Was told that if I had been going 80 mph they would have deployed!.

29 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2001 Kia Motor Optima

Failure Date: 11/10/2002

I was involved in a crash on Nov 02. I was broadsided by a truck (f150 type veh. ) in an intersection. As a result, my roof bowed and the entire drivers side from wheel well to wheel well was caved in like a half moon. The frame was pinned up against the drivers seat. The seat belt did not lock but released me and none of the air bags deployed. I suffered back and neck injury and was transported by amubulance to a nearby hospital. The vehicle was in storage. I contacted the manufacturer numerous times as did my attorney. All we received was the run-around for approx. Six months. No return calls, excuses, unable to get a release to have a kia auditor look at the car, etc. My insurance company and my attorney sent them the release twice and still no response. Consequently, I deployed overseas (military) and upon my return found that the car had been disposed of (destroyed). I still suffer from my injuries and my attorney is still handling my case.
