Kia Motor RIO owners have reported 55 problems related to air bag light on (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor RIO based on all problems reported for the RIO.
I have a 2008 kia Rio. The air bag light on the dash came on may 30, 2011. The dealership says the air bags will not work with this light on. The car has 77,000 miles on it and the kia dealership says that the airbag system is not covered after 60,000 miles. I have been told that I would have to replace the entire passenger side seat to get the new sensor needed at a cost of over $500. For what I have read on internet forums, the airbag system sensors and/or wires to the system malfunctioning on the 2008 kia Rio seems to be a common problem, in addition to other models. When I spoke with the dealership in athens, GA, they indicated I could just wear my seat belt. I believe kia needs to consider a recall.

I have a kia Rio 2006 my air bag light on my dashboard came on all of a sudden. My car has not been in any accidents at all. I took it to the kia dealer ship in south florida paid $130. 00 for the service department to run a diagnostic test for them to advise me my sensors are bad on my kia Rio 2006 the service department wanted to charge me over $3,000. 00 to replace the sensors as the service manager said that the sensor went bad. I feel as a safety feature and knowing my vehicle has never been in any kind of accident theses sensors should not need to be replaced. It is frustrating knowing that it is not too safe to drive my children in my car and this is the only reliable transportation I have.

Passenger air bag light randomly comes on with adult passenger in seat indicating that air bag not functioning. Occurs approximately once a week. Dealership has replaced passenger seat cushion twice and it still does not work properly. Dealership is not able to fix the problem. I fear an accident occurring without proper release of air bag resulting in possible serious injury or death. I have seen that there are many complaints of this problem. Kia needs to take responsibility and recall all 2008 kia Rio for this is a matter of life and death.
My air bag light came on at about 50,000 miles and will not go off. There has been no accident to the car, no trauma to the bumper at all. The light just doesn't go off.

Front passenger seat had to be replaced due to a failed air bag sensor after owning the car just 11 months. Now the car has 88,000 miles on it so the bumper to bumper warranty is out of date. On February 7, 2012 the car had to be taken into the dealer due to the dash indicator light for the air bag being on. The dealer reported that the passenger seat would have to be replaced for a charge of $880. The passenger seat has hardly been used due to the fact this is a second car and never used as a family car. There is usually only a driver and maybe a child in the back seat. I have talked to the dealer service manager, the dealer manager, and filed a complaint with Kia Motors. All complaints were a dead end with the reply being the same each time, it is out of warranty and is our responsibility. This is unacceptable since this impairs the ability of ever having a rider in the passenger seat without their life being in danger. With as many complaints being listed on the web with this same defect, it would appear this is a seat design imperfection and should be kia's responsibility. Does it take a death and a lawsuit to get any thing done in this matter?? who reads this and will it make any difference?? I bought the kia Rio because they advertised it was safe and economical. . . And it appears to be neither!.
Purchased car, 2001 kia Rio, in October of 2000. Within a few days airbag light came on. This occurred several times over a one year period and had to be taken back to dealer for repair at least four times. Recall was received for fuel system. This was replaced without problem. Next problem occurred with wheels, which was also a recall. I had to order the wheels which took at least a month to come in leaving me to drive to and from work, 65 miles each way, on violently vibrating wheels. Wheels were finally replaced. Problem occurred in winter 2005 with door latch. Driver side door would lock and stay locked. Vehicle was taken to original dealer for repair only to have old part repaired while being charged for new part and labor. Within a few days, door latch failed again. Took vehicle to another dealer who ordered new part. In the meantime I waited for part to arrive, and drove around in a car whose door didn't lock, leaving my car prey to thieves, who stole things constantly from me. Finally this was fixed but, the passenger side door lock did the same thing. I look the car back to the dealer who told me that they could not fix it since my warranty was up and to fix it would cost me $700 or more. I've also noticed a problem with the car stalling in traffic. This is a new problem. Example: I stop to get gas, start the car and turn out into traffic and the car shuts down. During the winter of 2005 while waiting for door locks to come in, my driver side wheel bearing went out. This was repaired but subsequently the next day after repair while driving into work, wheel bearing literally crumbled. Had car towed to dealer who informed me that an old part was mistakenly put back on the car. This was repaired and replaced with a new part. These are all safety and quality control issues.

Passenger air bag light randomly comes on with adult passenger in seat indicating that air bag not properly functioning. Occurs approximately 4 times per year. Dealership has replaced sensor, battery, seat cushion and then told us that they could not duplicate the problem and therefore could not fix it (car has been in for this service 4 different times). No event has occurred however fear of an accident occurring without proper release of air bag resulting in possible serious injury or death. Car taken in 05/22/08, service department observed light on indicating airbag was off with adult passenger in seat and asked us to return at another time for an appointment, would not give us documentation of visit. 2 complaints have been made with corporate kia and still the problem exists.
Air bag service>12/26/05 seatbelt faulty, 7/5/06 driver belt pretensioner resistance low, 7/24/06 shorted seat belt, 8/14/06 harness pinched between seatbelt assy & bdy, 6/11/07, code b1448; stabilant applied to OCS connector, 7/22/09 control box replaced as potential malfunction; air bag light came right back on; driver seat now on order to be replaced, 8/11/09 received call seat arrived (21 days with no air bag service, per service representative it was like driving an old car), 8/17/09 dropped off at 8:30am, not exact, (service 8/17 as that is my 9/80 work schedule day off) I received phone call at 230pm that the wrong color seat was received, 8/20/09 I received phone call at 5:01pm that correct color seat had arrived so I scheduled for 8/31/09 (my next 9/80 work schedule day off) for it to be replaced. With the complaints I have seen on this site I am going to contact the regional service manager and something is going to be done! this is not acceptable, warranty is a safety net just in case, not something to be used to cover a lemon of a car!.

Engine check light comes on repeatedly with cause unknown. The only corrective action dealership did was to change a code in the vehicle's computer system. Faulure caused vehicle not to exceed 5 mph. The brakes were making a loud noise, the air bag light was on, the left window was acting erractically, the regulator had to be replaced, the rear view mirro was inoperative, all 4 door seals were leaking water, there was a shimmy in the steering wheel, the shift indicator strip was out of poistion, the trim around the windshield was loose for the second time, there was a noise coming from the exhaust due to the shiled on the midpipe being loose.
While driving airbag light illuminated. Took vehicle to dealer, who stated that air bags were inoperable, and would not deploy. Air bag module needed to be replaced. Also, rear seat belt on driver's side did not operate properly, half of the belt was torn .
