2 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2021

My 2013 Sorento stalls randomly for no reason for about half second like engine skipping power for a micro moment and than keeps running. This happens at least 3-4 time a week but there is no open recall on my VIN. Last time it happened when I was driving on highway with 60 miles/hour and it stalled and rpm needle went to 0 but car keeps running. I took it to dealer and they started investingating. There is not check engine light or error code. Dealer duplicated problem once but then nothing. They opened technical case with kia with no result. There is a pcm recall on stalling for pcm update from kia back in 2014 but my VIN doesn't fall under it so they are not ready to perform any recall process on it. No help from kia at all. Finally after almost 3 weeks I brought my Sorento back from dealer saying "if it happens again bring it back and we will check again". Dealer keeps charging diagnostic fee every time I go. I think kia doesn't for customer safety and don;t think what happens if vehicle stalls and stops on highway what happens to the people. They are playing with people's lives. I see thousands of people complaining on various forum for the same issue but again same thing their VIN doesn't fall under recall though it is a same problem.

3 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2021

The contact owns a 2013 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning light continuously flashed. While depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would not properly accelerate. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,000.

4 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2020

Check engine light came on without warning and two minutes later my engine seized in the middle of a 4 lane highway around a blind turn. I feared for my life as I couldn't move my vehicle and cars trucks were zooming by at 80 mph. I had to get my car pushed off the road to safety, later towed to a local shop. Was told the engine was completely shot. This is common with kia engines as my research has shown. My make and model have had recalls but not my VIN#. Seems however I have the same problem. Why was my engine not recalled? I'm lucky I wasn't seriously harmed but now I'm left without a car and fear loosing my job bc I don't have a way to commute 35 minutes to work now.

5 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2020

While driving the vehicle at about 50mph, the rpm gauge rose significantly and the check engine light came on. I stopped the vehicle and restarted it and the same thing happened again. I then had the vehicle towed to my local mechanic and he indicated that the engine was failing and should be replaced.

6 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2020

We were driving back from a post op surgery appointment when the check engine light started flashing. It has never gone off before. We stopped at the nearest auto shop and the connecting rod bearing is bad in the engine and a while new engine is needed. This is a known recall for this car, make, model, and year. Somehow it does not include my VIN number in the recall, but we are having the same exact problem. I have invoices stating this from the auto shop I can email.

7 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2020

The engine seized while I was driving. There was no warning. There were no check engine light warning. There wasn't an oil lamp indicating low oil.

8 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2019

The engine stalled while driving on the freeway. Check engine light came on after the car lost power. We had to pull onto the shoulder of the road and the car was towed to the dealership. No warning lights of any kind came on prior to the engine stalling. Kia claims the oil was low but no check oil light ever came on. The scheduled maintenance plan was followed precisely and is up to date. Kia has a faulty engine oil pressure warning light, causing engines to stall while driving.

9 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2019

Engine stalled. Driving 55 mph on flat highway road at 9:20 pm et check engine light came on, engine stalled, I coasted to a stop, put in park, restarted the engine. Oil dipstick shows full. 89,443 miles. 2nd time in less than 7 days it stalled.

10 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2019

When I was driving my 2013 kia Sorento down the highway the engine started to rattle and I was losing power it would not go when I step on the gas their was no check engine light or anything on the the dash lighting up saying their was something wrong with the engine when it quit running only then the dash lights came on after it already died I was only going 50 mph it is a good thing it did not die at the intersection this car only has 55,448 on it and I was told by the kia dealership that it will need a new engine that will cost over 6,000 dollars to fix it. The service department at the dealership has not provide a copy of the service order stating what is wrong with the Sorento, even though we have requested one to send with this correspondence several times. I called kia and they were no help at all. They make unsafe cars and will not help you at all. Do yourself a favor and do not buy a kia.

11 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2019

My 2013 kia Sorento has been frequently decreasing power while driving. Rpms would drop to 0. In some cases the vehicle would continue to remain at the current speed, but with the rpm at 0. In other cases, the vehicle would rapidly decelerate and stall out forcing me to pull over and restart the vehicle. This has occurred approximately 20-30 times over the last few months and has occurred while in traffic, putting myself and my daughter at great risk for an accident. There were 2 times it was very difficult to restart the vehicle. In some of these cases the check engine light has turned on but not in all instances. It is beginning to become a more frequent occurrence and I am afraid it is going to happen at a time there is a vehicle too close to me or I am not going to be able to safely pull over. When I had a mechanic run the engine code he said it came up a crank sensor issue. He informed me my make and model vehicle has received numerous complaints about this decrease in speed issue and that it could also lead to the vehicles catching fire. This is a great concern for me as I have a 5 year old child, am an emt and also a child passenger safety technician. When I contacted a local kia dealer, they pretty much stated there was nothing they could do since there is not a recall at this time. I am very concerned as kias are typically family vehicles and countless lives of children and their parents are being put at risk. Hopefully further investigations will be conducted and appropriate recalls issued so that there does not need to be any further deaths or injuries. Please keep me posted as to the outcome of this and other related complaints.

12 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2019

I keep getting error codes and check engine ligh I check with obd2 meter 3 different codes come up 3 times each. P0638, p2106, and and p2110. I clear them check engine light goes off and then randomly it happens again I'm not sure if this is a safety issue but I just want to be sure. It happens when I'm either going 25 or 55 and accelerating.

13 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2019

Engine abruptly shut off while driving at 50 mph down the exit ramp of a highway. No engine knocks, sounds or abnormal signs of concern. Luckily, the car was able to roll to a stop on the shoulder of the road to call roadside assistance. Car was towed to dealership who diagnosed engine failure due to a problem with the "bearings" . Entire engine needs to be replaced. We are the original owners of this vehicle and have had all of its servicing done at the dealership including the last one 2 months ago. We have never had a check engine light come on or had any notification from the maintenance checks that this may be a problem. We have found out that kia Sorentos of 2013 with a 2. 4l gdi engine has been recalled for this same reason and I strongly suspect that our motor has the same defect. After a superficial online search, there are numerous complaints of sudden engine failure in this model of kia Sorentos that were not covered under this recall (sc147. I believe an investigation should be in order. Should we have not taken this exit, this most certainly could have caused a high speed mva involving multiple vehicles if the car abruptly shuts off while cruising at a highway speed. Note: approx. Mileage of the car is 107,000.

16 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2017

At 130,288 miles 08/31/16 vehicle was sputtering and lagging while driving but no check engine light on. Kia dealership replaced camshaft assembly and charged me $2390. On 06/26/17 at 155,278 miles similar problems with vehicle spitting and sputtering but no engine light on. Dealership could not duplicate the problems on a test drive. On 07/18/17 at 155,872 miles engine light came on. Vehicle spitting and sputtering again. Metal found in oil and in filter. Dealer suggested replacing engine due to bearing wear causing cvvt and ocv sticking. Recall was done on other Sorentos, but my sx v6 has had the same engine failure and the dealer told me there was no recall on my Sorento. My kia has sat undriveable for almost a year. I had my vehicle oil changed at the dealership without fail and only drove highway miles to and from work. I have each of these service department invoices from dean mccrary kia in hattiesburg ms.

18 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2014

Car stalls at low speeds, refuses to go over 60 mpg and check engine light comes on. Lose power at speed (on freeway) and tachometer goes to zero. This has happened many times and is getting to become a safety concern. Have taken it into dealer who cannot find a problem with it, but I have two teenage daughters and I don't feel safe with them driving it. Twice while driving on freeway the vehicle had a braking response when the accelerator was pressed. My daughter once had to hussle over to the shoulder in heavy traffic to turn the car all the way off and back on to reset it. Many times it stalls while sitting at traffic lights.

19 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2014

I have a 2013 kia Sorento that I bought brand new with only 8 miles on it. I was at a stop light and my car lunged forward as if someone hit us from behind but there was no one there. So when the light turned green we started to go and noticed we had no power and the check engine light was on. We were able to get to the side of the road and turn off the car and called aaa and the dealership telling them what happened. So once it got there the service tech and it probably was the computer and it needed to be updated . I stayed there for about 1 hour while they did the update and then they test drove it and the check engine light came back on. So then they said it was the throttle body so they replaced it and test drove it again and the check engine light came on again. So they found that it was the pcm . Not totally sure what that is. He says it was 1500$ part in the computer that was malfunctioning . But they had my car for a week doing the repairs and now is running good. They also have me a rental car. So in all the dealership did a good job fixing my car and wouldn't stop until it was fixed right.

20 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2013

The vehicle lost power when driving on the highway and check engine light came on. . I was lucky to stop the car on the road side. Turned the vehicle off and restarted the car but the check engine line said not go off. Drove the car for about a mile and lost power again. Repeated the same step and restarted. Reached home . This vehicle has had several problems, purchased the vehicle new with 10 miles. Last month the fan was not turning off even after turning off the vehicle. Today's incident could result in an accident if I was on the left lan.

21 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2013

Driving vehicle on highway, suddenly lost power, would not accelerate. Stopped in breakdown lane, shut vehicle off and restarted. Vehicle ran ok but check engine light was on. Due to vacation took vehicle to dealer on 10/8. Service manager said there was a recall for ecm and based on code from vehicle that was probably the problem. When I asked why I was not notified he said because it was not a safety issue????? to me loss of power on the highway is a safety issue. Now, 10/16 my wife confronted the same problem and on the highway which she said caused a real safety problem, she was in the middle lane and cars were bearing down on her until she could finally move over into the breakdown lane. Again, she was able to restart the vehicle and very anxiously able to get off the highway. After stopping and restarting two more times she was able to make it home with the check engine light on again. Upon seeing other similar complaints on the web, I am going back to the kia dealer to try and get this fixed, however, I think that the NHTSA needs to force kia to do a recall to fix the problem before someone gets seriously hurt on the highway, the service manager at the dealer is at a loss as to what may be causing this condition but it is obviously a problem others have encounted.

22 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2013

While driving home from a weekend vacation, with roughly 130 miles remaining of the trip, running at 70-80 mph on expressway, the car lost rpm, stalled, and would not accelerate. This happened at roughly 2:15pm. I had to pull over to the side of the road, crossing over 2 lanes of expressway traffic, while coasting, with my wife a 3yr old child in his car seat. I turned the car off and restarted the car in which rpm's were back and car was running. We stopped at my wife's parents and looked up engine stalling issues on the 2013 kia Sorento. I was shocked at what I saw. There are multiple entries, with individuals with the exact same issue. In reviewing their claims, it appears that mechanics are having issues identifying and fixing the problem. Are our way back from parents, this happened again at 4:45pm, and a third time at 5:06pm. We stayed in the furthest right lane and safely pulled off. The check engine light is on. Since it is Sunday, and the dealer isn't open, the car will be brought to the dealership first thing in the morning tomorrow. This car was just brought to the kia dealership last week to have front suspension work done, due to jerking and clicking effects, for no accident reason, nor any reason at all, as well as a faulty volume control on the steering wheel. Very disappointed in kia and this vehicle, and we will be taking action to have this situation rectified.

23 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

I had just purchased the vehicle about 2 weeks ago. It was used but only had 29875 miles. As I was driving on the road preparing to stop at a light the engine shut off and the check engine lights turned on. I lost power steering, luckily I was next to a burger king and was able to coast into the parking lot. As soon as I stopped I put the vehicle into park and was able to start it up again. I had brought it into the dealership and they kept it for the day, but told me that they could not duplicate the problem and the diagnostic revealed there was no issue. I thought that it might have been just a rare occurrence, but a week later the same thing happened again. Both times my 4 month old son was in the vehicle. I have brought it back to the dealership and told them to keep it as long as they need to fix the problem. I don't want it back until it is fixed. I hope kia does the right thing and recalls the vehicle before someone gets seriously injured.
