1 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 04/07/2025

The contact owns a 2011 kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle started to lose motive power. The accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated before pulling off the roadway. The hood was opened and there was white smoke coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the smoke then dissipated. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the alternator and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/04/2021

Instrument panel and alternator. My kia Sorento continues to have alternator failures that shut down the engine while in operation without warning. I had to replace one at 48,000 miles and again at 97,500 miles. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by two separate kia dealers and they cannot identify why this continues to happen. The first time everything on the instrument panel lite up at one time and then suddenly the engine failed and stopped running in motion, while I was driving on a highway. Luckily, I was in the right lane and coasted to shoulder. The second most recent time, the instrument panel flashed a battery so I replaced the battery and then had kia test for alternator problems and their equipment showed no issues although I brought it back numerous times. Then two months later it died again and they said it is the alternator. In addition, there is an electrical problem with the radio and backup cameras. To resolve this they showed me a reset button. Clearly, there are electrical shortages or issues. I have had on-going issues with the kia Sorento engines stalling and not accelerating and now this with the alternator. This is extremely dangerous!! none of the issues are being addressed yet, they are listed all over the internet. How many people have to die before issues are addressed???.

3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 02/13/2021

My alternator went out and kia replaced it, I was still under warranty within 15 months the second alternator went out on the freeway traveling at 70 m hr the car with no warning the car completely died on the inside lane no brakes, no gas, no lights, this was such a dangerous we could have been killed I had to pay over 900. 00 to get this replaced, I'm constantly having to replace batteries and alternators I'm know for the 3rd time having to have this done again.

4 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/01/2020

Driving on the thru-way going 65 mph when my vehicle jerked forward suddenly. I was able to pull over, vehicle lost control of steering and brakes and completely just 'shut off' on me with no fore-warning. Called aaa, tech. Could visibly see a belt which had ripped out of engine and was dangling under vehicle. I then had vehicle repaired- a new belt was installed , a brand new alternator, new brakes, oil change. 3 weeks after this event, I was again driving on the thru- way in almost the same exact location and this happened again. . My vehicle just went dead, this time slowing down and dying. Called aaa , they serviced me off the thru-way (thru-way division) and upon having vehicle looked at my choice shop. . I was told that my vehicle had completely seized (was now totally dead) and was non- repairable without a new engine. Also told that my vehicle had little oil even though I had only 3 weeks prior gotten an oil change and car repairman could not report any physical issues with oil connections, ie. Gasket leak, drain plug, seal issues. Due to the amount of monies I have spent from day 1 on this vehicle, my experiences and the lemon the vehicle has proven to be, I find this incredibly unsettling and know that there were issues going on with this vehicle prior to it going onto the road that should have been repaired and were not due to no fault of my own. Aside from these issues, in past there were several other problems related to the locks and windows locking on there own while vehicle in motion and fuses related to this as well as the vehicle shocking me when opening drivers side door handle which is incredibly unsafe! I request that someone please look into the recall withholding which has come to light with kia and my vehicle qualifying for these recalls as kia has told me that they are unwilling to assist me financially as well as west herr.

5 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2019 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

On 3 separate occasions (2 of which occurred 3/1/20). After stopping my vehicle, I lost all electrical power when I attempted to restart. No displays, no lights and of course the vehicle wouldn't start. After exiting and entering the vehicle multiple times everything comes back on. The battery and alternator test fine and the keyfob battery is good, the vehicle was not in motion when the incidents occurred.

7 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 01/23/2020

I was driving on the interstate and at 70 mph I had sudden power failure and the the engine completely died. After about 30 minutes it started up just long enough to go a half a mile and it did the same thing. 10 hrs later it started up again and we were able to have a diagnostic reading done which showed nothing. The battery and alternator were tested and are both working completely fine. Later on it ran fine for about an hour and then suddenly did the same thing again.

8 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2019 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/07/2019

While driving on highway, radio on and only connected via bluetooth. The radio screen was flickering and then shut down as if I manually turned off . As this happened the dashboard lights and my headlights shut off. I had to safely pull over and by the time that I did, I couldn't record it for evidence as it rebooted itself. I called right away and had to wait 2 days for appt. This is the 3rd time and rick case kia in sunrise FL keeps giving me the run around. My battery and alternator is fine. I honestly think they stop caring and just give me excuses and tell me they have to wait for mfg decision on my issue. My issue seems to happen when I am driving and cannot be on my phone recording as they want some kind of video as proof . So disgusted with their service and wished I wouldnt have gone with a kia.

9 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 09/23/2019

Alternator fails car battery goes dead causing you to have a hard time steering and unable to shift gears roll down windows or use safety flashers because you have no power! we had been on the expressway going 70 and were so lucky to have just pulled into our bank when failure occurred!! a few minutes earlier and my wife who was driving would of crashed because of lost of power steering going out and weak shoulder strength from shoulder surgery. The car is 23 days over 5 years and had 43757 miles at5 time of failure. This vehicle needs to be recalled because the alternator failure is a safety hazard because I believe the alternator is underpowered for all it is asked to do much in the way of the 2000-2007 kia spectra which is a recalled vehicle>.

10 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/20/2019

The alternator in this vehicle had died now 3 times in the past 4 years, causing the car to shut off while driving. The alternator goes from working to completely dead. The first time this happened the car had around 65,000 miles. The second time it had around 128,000 and this last time around 131,000 there was a recall listed for the original alternator but kia claimed it did not apply to our car even though the manufactured date fit within the listed months.

11 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/08/2019

My 2015 Sorento (original owner) just flat out died while driving in the left passing lane on interstate 85n from the airport in atlanta (in the pouring rain 6/8/2019) and without any warning. Not only did it just stop running "everything died" no lights, no hazards; no power windows etc. It would not even acknowledge the key fob. The SUV was completely dead. I was so lucky to not have been hit by another vehicle. Once the hero truck pushed me across 8 lanes to safety; I had to have my SUV towed to the dealer. The diagnosis: the alternator and battery were both bad and had to be replaced for 1500. 00. What?? of course, the warranty had just expired the month before; mileage just had turned 50k. I was completely shocked as no indicators of anything going bad occurred. No warning lights; no hesitation starting; no dimming lights, no noise; etc. it had full power; everything was normal! my SUV had every maintenance performed on time and was still 2k away from its next service. This incident not only placed me in a very dangerous situation it troubles me greatly there was no warning at all. Again, no indicator or symptom of anything wrong. This SUV is my 2nd Sorento and will be my last kia. I do not feel safe in this brand of vehicle. I want to add my first sorrento; (2008 ex model, I can supply a VIN too) also had a major repair event occur right after its warranty expired (within 2 months); the rear differential went bad and had to be replaced. I really wonder if this is a trend with kia; major issues occuring rsoon after warranty expires; major repairs/costs are the result; not to mention the issue placing you in a dangerous situation without warning. Something is wrong here. I have never experienced this with any other vehicle I have owned right neither right after a warranty expires or even close after and when I do? both were sorrentos.

12 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 03/18/2019

My kia Sorento turn off twice when driving and is not the alternator we don't know what it is do you know if there any new recalls ?.

13 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/11/2018

I bought my 2013 kia serento in November of 2017. I had it for 33 days and the alternator went out. I called kia in joplin and they told me to bring up there. Once I arrived, and I set for over half the day, they tell me that my kia is not under warranty and it was going to cost me $1000. After having it replaced the radio shuts off and on by it's self and now the flat tire light stays on all the time. The radio turns on and off while driving and turning. Please help me with this. I am told that there is no recalls on my car.

14 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 11/03/2018

Headlights burn out, replaced several times and even burns out same day, some part of headlight, lightbulb attachment also melted and was replaced several times. Brought car to different mechanics regarding issue and all reply its an electrical issue with many kia Sorentos, but when you call kia they say its not their problem. Also, driver heated seat stopped working, mechanics unable to find issue said it was electrical short, then seat went on by itself and was unable to turn it off, seat became severely too hot to drive car. Lights blew out while driving, sometimes while car was just turned off, parked in front of my house and even once right away at the mechanics. And most recently, issue with battery. Replaced battery after car wouldnt start, still had issues, replaced alternator, still had problems. Replaced connectors. Its ridiculous. And lights still go out and melt.

15 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/05/2018

We have replaced the alternator several times in the past year.

16 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 11/15/2017

I just recently made a post here yesterday . . . And after reading comments, I thought I'd add on. My comments have to do with a 2015 kia Sorento which needs a new motor because bolts that hold the head to the block are stripped (I smelled antifreeze). Obviously, not my fault. Mileage is 102,000. Kia doesn't want to help me fix this. Telling me I need a new motor at a cost of $7,000+. After reading the comments, I had to add on. Two weeks after we bought the car used, the fuel pump went. That cost was covered. A short time later, the back-up camera went. Kia wanted $1,000 to fix that; we had it fixed for $200 out of pocket. The alternator went on the car (I think we paid for that). My door handle also fell off, we had that fixed out of pocket. From everything I've read, kia doesn't care about the consumer or their safety. I bought a new kia in 2004, traded it in in 2007 for another new kia, which I still have. It has 278,000 miles on it! we bought the 2015 used and it's been one thing after another. Can't sell it as is, gotta fix it. I've been a loyal kia owner since 2004 . . . Won't be anymore. First opportunity to sell this car, it's gone. And there won't be another one in my driveway. Whoever heard that a 2015 car needs a new motor?!?! and their refusal to help us is unbelievable. I'm so angry.

17 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 09/29/2017

Purchased car in April 2016 used. A walmart battery was in car. I mentioned to sales person that it had a walmart battery, he says "o yeah, they have good batteries". So, car is at least on second battery. That battery died in April 2017. New battery from o'rielly's. That battery is now losing it's charge within 5 days of not driving. Not normal. Alternator is throwing 14. 1 to battery. Nothing in car is ever left on.

20 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 10/21/2015

After sitting for two days, the unit wouldn't respond to Smart key. Initially thought Smart key battery was dead. I replaced battery in Smart key, but the vehicle still wouldn't respond. I had to use mechanical key to unlock and enter unit when I noticed that neither the interior lights were working nor would the 'start' button activate engine or any auxiliary functions. Boosted unit and took to a nearby shop. Shut off engine and waited a few seconds, and it did restart; but left with shop to see if battery had a bad cell (the reason it wouldn't start). The shop indicated that both the alternator and battery needing replacing. The shop supervisor stated that the alternator wasn't properly charging the battery. I mentioned that the alternator/charge light never came on with me; but he stated that it will not always come on unless the alternator has really gotten bad. Replacement alternator cost $500 (excluding labor) for a unit that is only just over 4. 25 years old, and with only 83,700 miles.

21 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/11/2015

I was driving approximately 35-40 mph and my car suddenly lost power with all the dash lights briefly coming on (battery, oil, etc. ). Fortunately I was close to a side street and was able to make a hard turn and coast to the curb. I waited a minute and was able to restart the vehicle. I drove home and there was one more incident when the car started to lose power (lights dimmed) however I pushed on the gas and it powered up again. I have had the lights dim and the car seemingly lose power several times. Just prior to this the car typically hesitates when you are going full speed and then the dimming occurs. I've had my car idle at stop signs and at train crossings and have not experienced any power loss. It always seems to happen while driving 35-40 mph or more. I've had it happen while driving 60-70 mph on the highway. I had a diagnostic run on the car at the dealership with no concerning results. I've had a mechanic I trust check the alternator, the spark plugs, flush the coolant, put in fuel cleaner, etc. And he cannot locate the problem.

22 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 02/17/2015

Car began to act like it did not want to crank. Once I got to destination, radio went off first, then everything started dimming, then it shut off. Tried to jump it off, got it down the road 1/2 a mile then shut off again. Took battery out and tried to charge it but it was dead. Bought another fully charged battery, drove the car home. Tried to crank next morning, wouldn't crank again. Charged it up took it to 2 different places. . It was the alternator. According to a service bulletin #sa061, there was an issue where the battery light was illuminated causing the alternators not to charge. This was the same issue mine was doing. . The battery light was showing but I did not know about the alternator. This is third battery in 3 years for this car! after looking around everywhere with no alternators in stock and no one knowing how to re-build them, the kia dealership wanted to charge me $443 for an alternator and another $300 to put it in! not to mention I would have to probably tow it over there! that is crazy! this is not the only issue with this car! my sunroof, back-up camera, right front light, radio knob has fell off, passenger head rest has fell off, oil pan seal issues. . . . List goes on and on! it is ridiculous! this service bulletin covered dates 07/12/10 - 09/18/10. My alternator was built in 10/04/10. Wow,,,,it miraculously got fixed!! there was noooo way!!! the same issue is happening to mine!!! but. . . Kia wants me to pay for it!!! it is insane!!! I have had nothing but trouble out of this vehicle from day 1.

23 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 01/10/2015

I was driving at 55 mph when my battery light came on. Within several minutes every warning symbol light began to light up. My radio eventually shut down and the front dash lighting went out. I got off the highway and was able to drive for another couple of miles, but the engine power was dwindling. I eventually lost acceleration and power brakes and steering. My car has a push button start and I was unable to shut it off. The engine was running very roughly. I was unable to shift the car into park- only drive or neutral and could not get my flashers to come on. After 5-7 minutes, the car finally died and I could shift it into park and the hazard lights came on. I had my car towed to a kia dealership and was told the following business day that my battery was completely dead and would have to be replaced before anything else could be checked. After the battery was replaced I was told the alternator was working fine. I am concerned about this incident as it created a very dangerous situation.

24 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/23/2014

While driving at highway speed my wife with 7 year old daughter in car had all the dash lights and interior lights illuminate and the car became sluggish and was hard to drive. I advised he via mobile phone to immediately pull over and turn the car off. I told he to wait a minute and try to restart it and see what happens. All dash lights lit up again and the car made a click, click, click sound over and over again. She tried this 5 times and she had the car towed to the dealer. The dealer replaced the alternator for $946. 14 on 12/23/2014 at dulles kia in leesburg, va.

25 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 11/28/2014

At dealership to possibly purchase used 2012 kia Sorento. Vehicle would not start. Dealer had to jump start. Everything seemed ok and drove to nearby parking lot to look over the car. Left the car running in park and after 5 minutes various dash lights began to light up, engine would not accelerate, and the stop button would not shutdown the car. Eventually the engine labored and then stopped. Called dealer and we jump started the engine. On the way back to dealership (less than a mile) the engine labored, throttle would not respond, power steering got very heavy, and then the engine quit. This happened twice requiring jump starts. It died again entering the dealership. Battery had been replaced by dealership but troubleshooting determined the alternator was not charging. Sent to kia dealership and they replaced the alternator.

26 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 11/21/2014

The contact owns a 2015 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 10 mph, the vehicle experienced a power loss and the engine stalled. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle needed an alternator and it was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The failure mileage was 1,980.

27 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 04/21/2014

04-21-2014 @ 5:30 am. Car will not start. No electrical present on any system-nothing. Called kia roadside service and they suggested a jumpstart which we did and the car started. I ran the car for an hour or so with no problems. I took it to a local garage and had the battery and alternator tested and no problems were found. I called kia dealership and described the events to them and they stated that it was simply a dead battery. Next morning (yesterday), the car was totally dead once more. Called kia roadside assistance and they wanted to jumpstart it again. I refused and told them to send me a tow. They did and the car was taken to the closest kia dealership, 65 miles away. Several hours later I called the dealership and they stated that it was a dead battery. They charged the battery for 3-4 hours, tested the charging system and pronounced it "fixed". I left it at the dealership and picked it up this morning (today). It started and my wife is now driving it. I do not believe it was the battery and I expect it to happen again but the dealership's shop will do no further investigation. I'll keep you informed.

28 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/15/2012

Driving on interstate at night at 65 mph lights flicker inside and headlights. Battery warning light comes on and off several times. The vehicle has also had hard shifting around 20 to 30 mph, almost like applying brakes on slow down and an engine rev when speeding up. Next night (Sunday) vehicle lost all power with no warning while driving on two lane highway at night. Made it off to a side road, but engine still running rough, no response to gas pedal, could not shift vehicle to park, had to hold stop button for long time to finally stop engine, lights came back on, but would not start, finally could put in park. Hauled back to dealer. Service replies wasn't on schedule will maybe get to it today. Defective alternator on "e" order will fix all the problems. Wife refuses to drive unsafe, death trap and that she would not had been able to manage safely if she would of been driving when problems shut down the vehicle.

29 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 02/10/2012

After parking the car for 72 hours at an airport, upon return the car started normally, but the warning light showing a battery appeared. While driving home, approx 8 miles, the car's dash flashed more warning symbols. . . Antibrakes, airbag, etc and the wipers began to slow. I pulled over as the vehicle lost power and stalled. I used kia's roadside assistance to get a tow to the dealership. On 2/13/2012 the dealership replaced the alternator at no charge. This repair, necessary on this 2012 kia Sorento, occurred at 6,607 miles.

30 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2005 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

My car has broken down 3 times in the last month. I have a 2005 kia Sorento with 115,000 miles on it. Ever since I bought my car, it has continually had electrical issues such as replacement of the headlights every few months. I have just dealt with it and learned how to replace them myself. One month ago though, my car broke down and I had it towed to my local mechanic. He said it was the alternator and went ahead and replaced it. Everything was running smooth when I drove it away but then 2 weeks later, I broke down again (same symptoms occurred from when I broke down the first time - brake & battery light blinks and then the airbag light comes on and boom, no power). Brought it to the same mechanic and this time it was the battery that needed replaced so he went ahead and replaced it. Just yesterday, 2 weeks after the battery issue, my car broke down again with the same symptoms occurring. I'm still waiting on it to be diagnosed but there is no other explanation than for it to be an electrical issue. Suggestions?.

31 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/30/2008

On Monday, 06-30-08, at about 1400 hours, I parked my vehicle a 2004 kia sorrento 4x4 ex with approx. 80,000 plus miles. Shortly after parking this vehicle I entered a baskin and robins to have an ice cream cone. I was informed by frantic passerby's that a vehicle was on fire. I took a look outside and was shocked to see that my vehicle mentioned above was smoking and flaming up. This fire appeared to start on the passenger side of my vehicle near the power steering pump and alternator. My vehicle had been operating fine until this incident occurred and only went to the dealership for routine servicing under warranty. The honolulu police and fire departments were notified and reports documented under honolulu police department report #08-242969 and the honolulu fire department report #24891. Fire and police officials informed me that a possible fuel line malfunction is a possibility but cause of this incident is unknown at this time.

32 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2007 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 01/11/2007

The contact owns a 2007 kia Sorento. Three days after purchasing the vehicle, the air bag light illuminated, which indicated that the passenger side air bag was deactivated. While driving between 40-45 mph, the vehicle hesitated and jerked. When the vehicle is stopped at a stop sign or a red light, the exterior lights shut off. The contact has had to strike the dashboard in order to get the air conditioning to work. In addition, none of the windows will roll down. The blinkers, turn signal, and cruise control do not work. After owning the vehicle for ten months, the alternator had to be replaced and it currently needs to be replaced again. The rails to step up into the vehicle had to be replaced twice. During a crash with a deer, both the driver's and passenger side air bags failed to deployed and the seat belts did not work. As a result, the passenger sustained a broken arm. On two occasions, when the vehicle was taken to the dealer, the contact was informed that the tires needed to be rotated and aligned. On the third occasion, she was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty. Since owning the vehicle, she has been to the dealer several times with many complaints, but they have never made any repairs. A Hyundai inspector stated that the entire vehicle was out of specifications. The failure mileage was 600. Updated 09/23/08. The consumer hit a deer and the air bags did not deploy and the seat belts did not perform as they were designed. The transmission would delay in shifting and would not shift in the correct gear. Updated 09/24/08.

33 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2005 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 02/20/2006

Truck has a manufacturer defect (among many) as stated in service bulletins 2004-2014 that causes alternator radio frequencies to interference with transmission signaling thus shutting off or interrupting shift signaling due to inadequate shielding of transmission to tcm cable. This causes the truck to cut out between 3rd and 4th gear consistently when ascending or descending steep mountain passes at high altitude. As there was no advance warning of failure of shift kit to downshift, brakes had to be used on icy roads to slow an underpowered/overweighted truck. This is a very dangerous issue requiring expert driving skills to navigate and should have been addressed, but was not, by Kia Motors as a refund of purchase price and recall of trucks. The files regarding this problem and other problems with this vehicle are so vast they would crash your system. I have them if needed and can provide hard copies as the stack is about 3 inches deep and spans 11 years. I have 2 key factors that are also factors here. !. I am the daughter of a race car driver and skilled at navigating car issues. 2. I have been very ill for a decade and unable to work so have been caught in the refusal of kia to address the issues with this vehicle as I am unable to sell the car. I would feel it unconscionable to pass these issues on to another less capable driver. Needless to say it has been enormous stress to own this defective car and stress to try to get Kia Motors to step up to the responsibility of their warranties, and customer satisfaction guarantees in spite of the problems being apparent almost from point of sale.
