Instrument Panel Problems of Kia Motor Sorento

The contact owns a 2011 kia Sorento. The contact stated that the instrument cluster failed and different warning indicators illuminated, such as the all wheel drive and check engine. Also, the odometer failed and the speedometer would not display speeds past 20 mph. The vehicle was taken to three different dealers (midtown kia in tulsa, ok, boomer kia in oklahoma city, ok, and bob moore kia in oklahoma city, ok). The dealers were unable to replace the instrument cluster and reprogram it because it was against state laws. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

In bright sunlight it is extremely difficult to see the speedometer needle. The needle is dark red against a dark black background. Additionally it is only about 1/2" in length. If there is any ambient light striking the instrument cluster at an angle, the reflection masks the ability to see the needle. Not having an accurate indication of your speed is a very dangerous situation.

Cpsc:x1380106a. 2014 kia Sorento. Consumer stated the concern is not being able to read the electroluminescent speedometer in the daylight. The consumer stated it was difficult to see how fast he was going. The sunlight glare made it nearly impossible to see and it required him to take his eyes off the road for up to five seconds.

The speedometer needle is a small red line which is invisible in either sunlight or with driver wearing sunglasses. There is no way to see what my speed is. Especially a problem setting cruise control as I have to remove my glasses, take my eyes off the road, to see how fast I am going in order to set the cruise control. This issue is well documented on kia Sorento forums. Please request kia come up with a software update to change the color or intensity of the speedometer needle.

I cannot see the speedometer needle on . Bright days. I found myself staring at the speedometer trying to see my speed for way too long ( 4 seconds or more). It is extremely difficult to see the needle as it is a 1/2inch dark red tip against a dark black background. If there is any ambient light striking the instrument cluster at an angle, the reflection masks my ability to see the needle. Not having an accurate indication of my speed or staring at the speedometer for too long of a time is a very dangerous situation. The dealer said there is nothing he can do as the manufacturer will have to correct the problem.

While driving at an unknown speed in sunny weather, the contact stated he as unable to read the speedometer due to the glare from the sun reflecting off the instrument panel. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 150 and the current mileage was 1,500.

The dealer informed the contact that a repair did not exist for the instrument cluster. I was dropping off someone at work when the car made a thump and all the dash warning lights came on. I drove it home about two miles away, and took it to a automobile service center the next day. They told me that the crankshaft pulley was ready to fall off. The next day I had it towed from the service center to the dealer. The dealer said the same thing as the service center, and that it was under warranty. Also, it a needed a 60000 mile service for which I paid extra. When I went to pick the car 5 days later the car was making a belt noise, it was slow in starting, the dash light wouldn't come on, and the airbag light was on. When I took it back to the dealer, they tightened the belts and checked the other problems at a cost of $150, and that these other problems were not under warranty, and would cost $1400 to fix them. I have never had a problem with this car until the crankshaft pulley failed, and could not see why if a warranty failure caused something else to fail, why wasn't it fixed under warranty? also, the person who worked on the CA rcomplained about the oil pan with the sealer that was used to seal the engine.
