36 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/05/2015

While driving almost home, (2-miles) the power steering stopped, we pulled into a gas station, barely missing the fuel pumps. The belt came off. When the mechanic assessed the problem, it was much greater. The harmonic balancer was loose, and the drive pin to the cam belt gear had sheered off. The repairs were costly $1300. 00. This is a design defect and has affected thousands of kia owners. The owners are like myself and don't know what to do, so we just pay the bill. . Kia denies any issues. This a huge kia cover up! it has been a known defect for a long time, and kia does not want to pay for all the damages, and I'm sure the accidents.

37 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

The vehicle's power steering didn't work, and it was rarely driven after transmission repair at a kia dealer. Looking under the hood showed that the belts weren't moving. The crankshaft pulley was attached but not straight; offset. I called the dealer and they said the crankshaft bolt breaking is a common problem in these vehicles. Is/was there a recall for this? this is a potentially dangerous situation. Luckily the vehicle wasn't driven far when the problem was noticed.

41 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 07/07/2015

The bolt holding the harmonic balancer pulley to the crankshaft fell out and all the engine belts and pulleys stopped turning resulting in a loss of power steering, and making the vehicle very difficult to steer. This happened at a low speed and the driver was barely able to turn off the road without an accident. At a higher speed, in heavy traffic, or on mountain roads, the result would likely have been much worse. The car was towed to a kia dealer and repaired for approximately $1,500. 00, replacing the failed parts with new parts and with a warranty of 12 months/10 thousand miles. Previously, at 70 thousand miles as preventive maintenance, the timing belt was replaced by a kia dealer. Kia motors, having known of many failures of the bolt, sprocket, and pulley, should have upgraded these parts years ago and issued a recall or at least a service bulletin to avoid such dangerous failures. After our experience, we did not trust this car and traded it in for a new car from hopefully a more responsible manufacturer.

42 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/14/2015

I was turning at a stop light when I loss power steering and nearly crashed. I was able to get it pulled over. I raised the hood and saw the crankshaft pulley lying on the the bottom skid plate. I looked on the internet only to find there are probably thousands of similar cases worldwide. I called kia . They basically blew me off!.

43 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/05/2015

I was driving though a parking lot on late Friday afternoon and heard a rattling noise coming from under the hood so after I parked I popped the hood and also started to here a squeaking noise (belts rubbing), so I drove home and parked it until Monday when I took it to a local shop and they said it sounded like a pulley for the timing belt, they got it in on Wednesday and called to have me come take a look at what was causing the noises when I got there they explained that it was the crankshaft bolt that held the fly wheel on and there where two options (1)I could drive it until the bolt snapped or (2) they could try and break the bolt loose and replace it, so we went with option number 2 and after about 5 hours I got a call telling me that the bolt had snapped and they had tried welding a new bolt on to try and break the rest of it loose, and they had tried to drill out the bolt but with no luck, they then gave me an estimate to replace the engine with a re-manufactured engine the estimate was $6,900. 00 before tax, so I called kia corporate and they took a week to come back and tell me due to the age, the millage, and not the original owner they would not pay to replace the engine so now I'm going to join the class action law suit. Very bad engineering design to think 1 seer pin could hold that bolt plus it sounds like they are using a deep thread skinny shaft bolt witch means the threads are holding a 15-20lbs fly wheel when that seer pin snaps, very disappointed in kia, will never buy there cars again.

44 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

I brought a 2004 kia Sorento used in June 2015 with 96,000 miles on it and noticed the engine was making noise after a short time it wasent that bad I thought, until it started getting worse. Then I took it in to the kia dealership and got a call from them and I was told the blancer pulley bolt broke off in the crankshaft and was a big issue and they would let me know if they could get it out, they did but found the sprocket was damaged also, I went online to see if their was a recall and found many kia owners have had this issue. I had to pay 1300 dollars to get this fixed because of a bad part by kia. I'm very upset.

45 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/11/2015

46 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 04/06/2015

I purchased this car brand new from stevens kia in patchogue, NY and had them replace the timing belt @ 58k miles as per their guide lines. While driving the car I lost my power steering and electrical charging system, I was going around 45mph, I lost control of the car and was able to get it on the side of the road without any damage to the car or anything else. I called corporate kia and explained the problem and was told the car is out of warranty. (it has 123k miles on it). They told me if I wanted I could have it towed to a kia dealer and they would look at it for a diagnosis fee, but it was still out of warranty and they also told me my VIN# didn't fall into the recall they had concerning that issue. I had my mechanic look at it and he told me the crankshaft dowel pin snapped on the timing gear causing the harmonic balancer to fall off thus taking all the belts with it. It costed me over $2,000 to have the car repaired. After doing a goggle search it seems this is a common problem with these cars and is being ignored by corporate kia.

47 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 03/23/2015

Vehicle died while driving, then would not crank over. Had towed to dealer. Vehicle was no longer covered by warranty. Dealer replaced cam and crank sensors, timing belt, crank bolt and badly fraying accessory drive belt.

48 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 03/06/2015

Driving apporox 55mph, my lights seemed to dim then my battery and brake light came on. I immediately turned my heater, radio, dashboeard lights and lights to low. I continued driving for nothing else seemed to be wrong and was going to pulll over when I noticed my power steering also was not working. I was able to get myself to a safe place to stop and put the car in park, it began making an odd sound (thinking a possible belt) it then made a popping sound thinking I broke a serpentine belt, I then turned the engine off and had my mechanic look at it. He said the crankshaft bolt had broken off and was an estimated $3000+ repair. I have also had issues with crankshaft sensor which caused my car to not turn over without a jump. After that was repaired I had to buy a new battery that prior to the winter season tested out to be good. Ihave also been told I need to replace a spark plug which could cost hundreds to replace because of the location. I have to replace headlights/taillights more than normal. I have seem to have issues with allignment and have put 2 sets of tires on after noticing abnormal wear on the insides, ive had it alligned twice. I still owe $6100 on a car that I would have to put $3000 into and now have nothing to drive!.

49 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Someone is going to end up very hurt if kia is not forced to fix these. Could u imagine this happening on a thru way?.

50 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 01/11/2015

I have service records showing I had the crankshaft pulley replaced at 55,000 miles under warranty by kia. The crankshaft pulley broke off at 105,000 miles. I was able to have the vehicle repaired cost $1500 out of my pocket. On 1/11/2015 the crankshaft pulley broke off for a 3rd time, shearing the threads to the engine, and causing the engine to no longer work. All 3 events caused loss of power and able to steer the vehicle.

51 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/20/2014

52 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/17/2014

While driving my 2006 kia Sorento on Wednesday December 17, 2014, a week before christmas, the crankshaft pulley bolt loosened up. Under tremendous pressure from the engine the steel pulley bent skewing all belted driving systems: power steering, electrical, electricity to engine, a/c, wipers, heating and defrosting systems, and etc¦ causing me to lose complete control of car while turning corner at busy intersection; loosing steering, complete engine shutdown, panic, and putting me in ¿harm¿s way! my wife and I had specifically bought this SUV because we care and drive our 3 beautiful grandchildren to school/back and to all activities and so many other children (their friends) going to the same places and activities. I thank god this didn't happen with any children or my wife in the car and even under worse situations; expressway driving or so many other life threatening driving situations! I have paid many hundreds of dollars for the repairs and much time and worrying about that terrible incident I have suffered! also my immediate children put much pressure on me to get rid of this unsafe car concerned for their children (my grandchildren) and their friends!.

53 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

(amendments to odi#s: 10668775 & 10663356 - update) on 12/01/2014, I was in a 2015 kia Sorento lx (enterprise insurance rental) traveling on crabb river road, (a city street) sugarland, texas. I fully stopped at the traffic lights because it was red. Once lights turned green, I put the vehicle in motion by stepping on the gas pedal to accelerate but the car felt really sluggish so I gave it more gas in order to gain enough speed as I was about to go over some railroad tracks (approx. 55+ mph) which were on a road that was on an incline. Right as the car reached the tracks, the engine stalled, the steering wheel locked and I lost all control of the vehicle and it dove into a ditch; plowed directly into a steel billboard pole which was cemented into the ground because the brakes became unresponsive. There were no warning lights on the dash prior to the crash. Even though I was fully buckled, the seatbelt did not prevent my head from violently hitting the windshield and bouncing off the steering wheel since none of the 8 airbags deployed. I suffered near fatal injuries including a broken back (l2 fracture), spinal cord, head, eye, chin, jaws, neck and hip; broken teeth, permanent disfiguration (18 stitches), some vision & hearing loss from nerve damage and ptsd, mental anguish, chronic migraines, extreme stress, terrible recurring nightmares, etc. I'm a 5'2" woman and my chest was pinned to the steering wheel upon the impact with the pole and the fire dept. Had to free me and lift me up to the emts. I was transported to the er of a hospital by ambulance and later transferred to the trauma unit of memorial hermann hospital due to the severity of my injuries.

I was able to get a jump to start it back up but it keep on dying. I was finally able to get it started enough to get it home . It died right before my house so we had to push it into the driveway. When I was driving it home the electircal kept cutting in and out and it was making a loud noise. Come to find out the crankshaft pulley bolt broke off into the engine. I only had the car for 8 months and paid $8700. 00 for the car.

56 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 10/06/2014

While driving home there was a loud screeching noise. Get home to find out that my camshaft pulley is completely loose and broke! this needs to be recalled!!!! completely unsafe to be driving luckily I was only a mile away from home.

57 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 09/18/2014

On 09/18/2014 arriving home I started to hear loud rumble noises coming from the engine, took it to a local shop and was told it might be the pulleys, however, it was determined the next day - different shop that could make the repairs, the crankshaft pin sheared off (this work was previously done on March 2014 at a total of 1,800+ and here it is again!). Mechanic at the shop was the one that saved me $$ this time as he noticed the work as very recent, and suggested I take it back to where the repair had been done in March. One week later - 09/26/2014 I had my car back. However, I suspect this will happen again, since there are so many others having the same problems, and how many other repair shops continue to order the same part over and over. Really? hello kia, they need to step up to this situation, before someone is killed. I am so glad I listen to my SUV and took it in for servicing, as this could have had disastrous results if I were on the highway going at a higher speed. The best thing here was the honest mechanic! I will never get another kia, and if it does happen again, that's when I will get another vehicle. As I continue to drive, I feel that my SUV is just not the same, the engine may have had some damage to which I have no idea how serious. I learned about a year ago that the kia 2006 SUV/serento we a very bad year for this model and it is true, this is not the only high costing repair I have had to pay for, and I do not even have 60,000 on it yet! worse SUV I have ever brought! never again. This vehicle is not safe, you never know what will happen as you are driving, and I always rent instead of taking tis vehicle, I have no confidence at all.

58 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 09/13/2014

Son heard squealing sound from belts, had belts changed. 1 week later belt came off pulley and never would line up. Repair shop came back saying that it was the crankshaft pulley and that a bolt had broken. After changing timing gears, belts, gaskets and other front end parts end of costing 1500. I then read the problems with this vehicle on line. I called the dealership and becky act like this was the first they had heard of this problem.

59 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/23/2014

First incident-on August 16, 2014 while on vacation and driving from virginia to chicago ill, the vehicle start making a rattling noise coming from the front of the vehicle and warning lights came on the dash (battery, brake) and the power steering went out making the vehicle very hard to maneuver, I immediately pulled over into a fast food parking lot to check the noise and found that the harmonic balancer was loose and belts were not turning, I had the vehicle towed to a mechanic after inspection I was informed that the crank shaft gear pin had broke off to the harmonic balancer. I purchase the parts (harmonic balancer, bolt and crank shaft gear) and had the mechanic repair the vehicle and drove back to virginia. Second incident-October 2014 while my wife was driving the vehicle, she encountered the same problems the warning lights, rattling in the front of vehicle, power steering locked unable to turn vehicle, I inspected the vehicle and saw that the harmonic balancer was loose and belts were not turning, the pin in the crank shaft gear has broken again, I had the vehicle towed to the kia dealership in richmond, and they stated that I needed a new motor. After investigating complaints about this vehicle on line I found out that this problem is well documented with this make and year vehicle. If I or my wife had been on the highway at the time of this fault it could have been catastrophic. I also found that their is a class action suit against Kia Motors addressing the exact same fault. (civil action no. 13-006 united states district court, district of new jersey) essentially, plaintiffs claimed their vehicles were designed with a “defective crankshaft pulley bold and balancer,” which could result in “breaking off the spring guide pin,” causing “catastrophic engine failure. ” this vehicle is unsafe, a recall is warranted and Kia Motors needs to correct the defect.

60 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/05/2014

After a small number of days of a minor rattling from the engine, as I pulled away at an intersection there was a bang from the engine, the engine lost all power and there was a tremendous amount of banging from the engine. Managed to crawl to a nearby gas station. The car stalled on the forecourt. Managed to restart it, only to hear the terrible banging again and see that the engine still had no power. Had it towed to the local kia dealer the following morning. At the time of writing this, kia are refusing to fix the car under warranty, despite it still being covered and there only being 44,000 miles on it. They are claiming the reason for the incident is a 'clogged oil filter', although they have yet to properly examine the engine and officially diagnose the fault. The symptoms of my incident are suspiciously similar to other issues dating back to 2005 where the bolt pin on the crankshaft pulley shears.

61 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 07/10/2014

My check engine light came on 2 months ago and I brought it to a kia dealership who told me it was the cylinders that were miss firing and the belts needed to be replaces and they fixed that. I asked about the crankshaft and they told me it was fine. When I left the light came back on and they told me I need new spark plugs, fixed that and the light came back on again. While driving on the highway the break light and battery light came on and the car began to loose power. Now the car is at another dealership and they are telling me it's the crankshaft. After reading what has happened with many other people I can see the original problem was the crankshaft. I have spent over $4k on fixing the car and the car is not worth it.

62 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 07/08/2014

The contact owns a 2006 kia Sorento. The contact started the vehicle and heard a strange noise. He proceeded to drive the vehicle and it stalled at 30 mph. 63 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 07/06/2014

As my family and I drove down 146 towards baytown, TX from dayton, TX I heard a loud "thud". Immediately followed by a loss of a/c, power, and steering. I pulled onto the shoulder immediately and popped the hood. I saw the harmonic balance lying on the splash guard and a belt lying beside it, as well as another belt loss but still hanging on the other pulleys. I got a friend to tow me back to my studio. I began searching online for why the bolt that holds the balance could just break. I found numerous reports of this problem, as well as law suits filled in other states for this very issue.

64 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

The bolt on the crankshaft pulley as well as the pin broke off causing the motor to stop and overheat dumping all the antifreeze and stopping all belts. My mother could have been injured while driving but it ended up being she was just blocking traffic thankfully and not on the highway. This seems to be a very common issue with hundreds if not thousands complaining about the crankshaft pulley bolt and pin. Kia says they won't do anything as it is out of warranty and I am not the original owner. This may have been fixed once before on the vehicle due to failure and I am very worried this may happen again with worse consequences. My mechanic was able to provide a temporary/permanent fix but we really dodged a bullet and it could have caused immediate catastrophic damage. I'm dissapointed with all of the serious complaints that kia still has not recalled it for 2002-2009 Sorento models.

65 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/02/2014

Loud crack was heard while driving. Lost power steering. Pin in the crank pulley snapped and belts stopped turning. Car was very difficult to steer and fortunately we were able to get it to the side of the road. This car has a 10 year, 100m mile warranty which expired in September of 2014. Dealer contended that this problem, although part of the engine was not covered.

66 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 04/23/2014

I was driving down the street in my kia Sorento 2006 when I heard a loud bang. All of a sudden my car started to break down. The power steering went out, followed by my brakes and finally, my check engine light came on as the rest of the car started to fall apart on the road. The car completely died in the middle of an intersection. My car was towed to a local bp where after inspection I was informed that my engine crank bolt had blown off, destroying my crank shaft, pistons, belts, etc. My engine is ruined and cannot be fixed.

67 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 04/23/2014

Driving vehicle at about 45mph, engine started making a screeching noise and got louder when accelerating. There was a loud bang from engine area and immediately lost all power and ability to steer and brake. We were approaching a busy intersection and had to pull the emergency brake to avoid running a red light into oncoming traffic. Had vehicle towed to our dealership. The crankshaft pulley bolt snapped off and the belt and pulley fell off. The bolt did not break far enough into the engine block so repair was able to replace it. After this happened we learned of the safety concern with said vehicle and kia denies anything wrong with their Sorentos. There is a pending lawsuit against kia for this known problem. This is a very dangerous situation and we advised the dealer that we want to trade the vehicle as it poses a very serious safety problem. Kia should provide a major recall. Now getting a hard time from dealer. We are stuck in the middle and still owe a lot on this hazardous vehicle.

The vehicle was taken to the nearest service center, one mile down the road from her home, but the vehicle became more difficult to steer and when her daughter pulled in the parking lot, she could no longer steer the vehicle and all of the instrument panels light illuminated. The mechanic stated the repair would require the engine being pulled and to repair or replace the crankshaft or replace the engine entirely. Either way, it would be costly. Updated 05/19/14.

69 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 03/26/2014

Vehicle's battery, brake, and check engine lights came on while parked at home, opened hood, noticed belt was slipping, and crankshaft pulley was spinning almost free. Contacted mechanic who performed most recent maintenance, he attempted to repair work under assumption was faulty. Problem reoccurred 3 months later, mechanic now convinced he is not the cause of this. Research shows common issue with this make/model. Crankshaft bolt appears to break free of pulley. Will require engine block disassembly to determine if crankshaft has been damaged.
