What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?- my car is burning oil at a rate of at least 1 qt per 1k miles how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?- driving a car with insufficient oil could lead to engine failure or fire. I drive my [xxx] daughter as well as myself and family in that car on a daily basis. The car could leave me stranded or cause a fire. I am afraid to drive it and therefore have not driven it. I am currently without transportation due to this issue. I will not risk my familys saftey. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center?- yes this is a known issue by kia and many vechiles with the same make and model have been recalled. 2 independant service centers have confirmed my car is burning oil and it is unsafe. Kia has also confirmed it is burning oil. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? -yes kia performed an inital oil consumptupn test which it failed, but refuse to do additional tests/repairs do to service record documentation. I am still within my 10y/100k warranty but they will not cover it. It is a defective engine and is a manufacturer defect not user error were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear- the oil light went off the first time in Dec 2024 and I immediately took it to shell station. This was before I was due for an oil change. They told me I had no oil. In Feb 2025 I got another oil change at valvoline and was told the same thing. Kia confirmed the oil consumption in April 2025 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

It appears my car is burning oil, there is no leakage. I keep oil changes on a regular basis and now checking oil levels daily. It is using 1-1. 5 qts every 2 weeks. This problem was found with last oil change. My car now seems to seize when taking off inconsistently. I don't know if two problems are connected. There are no warning lights coming on. I contacted cartown kia about 3 times by phone, leaving messages, and online but no response.

I have a 2017 kia Sorento . I bought this vehicle with less than 5000 miles on it. I had the oil changed when it was recommended. Loved the vehicle. Fast forward to about 48,000-50,000 miles. {currently at 62,000 miles} had the required oil change done and they noticed the vehicle was low 2 quarts of oil. Oil consumption continued. Had an oil consumption test done {at approximately 53,000 miles] and determined it as a legit complaint. As I am not the original owner and the vehicle warranty expired at 50,000 a free new engine is not an option. They offered to complete a free combustion flush. I am now waiting for 1000 miles to recheck the oil to see if the flush took care of the problem, but I did check the oil at 100 miles, and it is down 1/2 a quart already. I will be reporting back to the garage if the consumption gets worse or when I hit the 1000 mile recheck mark. I am seriously concerned about this. I paid a lot of money for this vehicle, and it was to be my last car in my retirement years! if the engine fails, seizes or continues to burn excessive oil and I have to pay for a new engine or more repairs I will be devastated as I am on a social security and have a limited incoming. The engine could seize if it burns all the oil when I'm driving and could cause injuries to myself or the public. I know hate this vehicle and wish I never bought it !! I really feel kia should be required to replace this engine with a safe no problems engine!.

My kia has an engine issue that involves oil consupmtion. I get the oil changed every 5,ooo miles and in the last 4 oil changes it has been boted that there was no oil or about 1/2 a quart in the oil pan when draining. This means that my kia in essentialy burning 5 quarts of oil every 5,000 miles, which in my opinion is far more than just a worn engine. However, the vehicle is not leaking any oil, I confirmed this by parking in both my garage and driveway to test for oil leaks and I have looked under the vehicle and had the people doing my oil change check and none of us can find any evidence of a leak. When the engine is running there in no black or white smoke so I am just not sure where the oil is going. I have contacted the kia dealership I bought the vehicle from and they basically told me that is not their problem and that I can pay all this money to have it diagnosed. I know that my kia Sorento is not he only one with this issue, however, kia has stated that even though it is the same issue, since it hasn't become a recall involving my particular VIN it is not thier problem. And it needs to be fixed becasue one of these days the engine is going to sieze while I am on the freeway, or something like that, and potentaly cause a major accident that could result in death. Please look into this for me thank you.
I have two major concerns about my 2017 kia Sorento (2. 2l) oil consumption: the vehicle consumes up to 2-3 quarts of oil within 2-3 months. This is similar to other cases on this site: NHTSA id number: 11493012 NHTSA id number: 11491117 NHTSA id number: 11487580 NHTSA id number: 11486757 NHTSA id number: 11486544 NHTSA id number: 11484553 NHTSA id number: 11483621 NHTSA id number: 11482245 NHTSA id number: 11478518 NHTSA id number: 11478115 engine knock/vibration: now the engine knocks wildly when in idle, and I do not feel safe driving it, and it is the only vehicle I have access to transport my child to their job. My issues are similar to these reports: NHTSA id number: 11491104 NHTSA id number: 11477401 NHTSA id number: 11476366 NHTSA id number: 11473881 NHTSA id number: 11473534 I have reached out to the dealer, in reference to this, and they will not return my calls. When a mechanic reviewed it, they replaced two ignition coils (cylinder1&4) and all of the spark plugs, without any change. This vehicle was purchased in April 2022, and I have nothing but issues with it, and the dealer refuses to take it back or assist me with my concerns. It is very unsafe to drive, but like I shared it is the only vehicle we have. I fear this will not end well. My friend called on my behalf and had this recall request open: 575550.
On some occasions the steering was not smooth, as if it stuck just a little and I would have to lightly jerk it. This was always highway. Then about a week ago my oil light flickered and I mean only a second and then again on the way home. When I checked my oil, there wasn't a drop on the dipstick and it looked to have a little burnt oil on very tip. It was also very hard to get the oil cap on to add oil. I had to add 3 quarts! why did my oil light come on before this and why did it not stay on? my car is a 2017 kia Sorento and has only had maintenance at the dealer where it was bought. I was shocked when I looked online and saw this was an issue for years. Why isnt someone making kia accountable? I cant afford to pay upfront for repairs and when courts decide years later maybe we'll get reimbursed, they don't wait on their payments for the vehicles.
Vehicle is experiencing abnormal oil consumption. Low oil light briefly illuminated on vehicle 1,000 miles before oil change was even due. Looked and oil dip stick was dry / empty. Refilled with 5 quarts of oil and took to local dealership for diagnostic. Local dealership referred me to kia for an oil consumption test.

My 2017 kia Sorento has had repeated oil leaks due to multiple oil pressure switch assembly failures. At 27,000 miles my kia experienced a significant oil leak (identified by me due to the strong smell of oil burning coming from the a/c. ) kia replaced the oil pressure switch part #94750-37100 at that time. Again at 60,000 this same part failed (again identified by the strong smell of burning oil coming from the engine) and once again kia replaced the oil pressure switch (part #94750-37100. ) having the same part fail twice in 60,000 and having oil leaks repeatedly is not only a fire hazard (I would point you to a similar problem you forced gm to perform a recall in 2015) but this could severely shorten the life of the car engine as well.
Engine burns up oil very quickly way before 3,000 miles and there are no alerts that the oil is low. Steering gets "stuck" at times for brief amounts of time and needs to be readjusted in the road. This happens on straight highways and in curve. Windshield wiper fluid function does not work.
My engine light went on and I immediately took it to my mechanic. There was no oil in my car, even though the oil light never came on. Two independent mechanics said I need a new engine. Even though my engine has a lifetime warranty due to a class action suit, the kia dealership said they could not open a claim unless my engine seizes up, which can happen anytime, anywhere. I told them I do not feel comfortable allowing that to happen, and they again said there is nothing they can do, that kia is no longer covering excessive oil consumption as of Nov. 2020.

At 123k miles, my engine shut off in the middle of a mountain pass. Restarted with no issues except oil light flashed on then off. Checked the oil and I had no oil, completely dry. I have always done timely maintenance, have hauled a uhaul across country 5 years ago, never burned oil. Had the car checked for oil leaks and there are none. Researched the problem with burning g oil and across the board, regardless of the kia year, kia's cars have this problem, yet no recalls or acknowledgement feom kia that there is a major problem. Dealerships are lying to owners.
I had a burning oil smell coming into the cab of the car and smoke pouring out of the engine. I was driving home and noticed it when I got home from work. We took it to the kia dealership the next day and it smelled bad, but didn't overheat. I took it in and it had multiple oil and fuel leaks. They replaced the valve cover gasket and fuel line and resealed the front cover and lower oil pan. This is very similar to another recall (recall #20v750000) they have on a different 2. 4l engine. I called the customer relations at kia and they said that no issues had been related, but I've had many other recalls on my engine already and have a warranty on it.

Excessive oil consumption problem (scan 0001. Pdf) noted below. Diagnostic compression test (scan 0002. Pdf) by kia dealer noted below.
Over the last several months, my engine had been burning oil excessively. I had to add 5 quarts of oil every 1-2 weeks. 3 weeks ago, while driving on the highway, my car began to slow, the lights on my dash were blinking and the car was not accelerating. When I was in a safe area, I attempted to restart the car and it did not start. Kia diagnosed the car with worn bearing rods. The car is 4 years old and has 136,000 highway miles.
Major consumption/burning of oil between oil changes. Was a quart low when had oil changed the end of September. By the end of October all of oil had burned out and had to actually add oil, then take to auto shop to check for leaks. No leaks. They did another oil change and now I have to constantly keep eye on oil level -- had to add oil again.
The contact owns a 2013 kia Sorento. The contact stated after driving and parking the vehicle, the contact smelled burning oil and an electrical odor coming from under the hood. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact notified an independent mechanic who recommended that the oil be topped off to fix the failure however, the failure the persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 126,000.
In approximately November 2020, my 2013 kia Sorento started using large amounts of oil in excess of 1 qt per week, when driving approximately 150- 200 miles' per week. Shortly after, I began smelling burning oil under the hood. I have taken the vehicle to a repair shop to find a leak, but none was found. One technician felt it could be a bad gasket, allowing excessive oil to enter the intake and burn there.
My engine is burning a large amount of oil. I take it in to do regular changes. I have a 2013 kia Sorento. It has 136000 miles just recently the oil light started coming on, checked the dip stick and it registers none. Its been taken for regular oil changes but burns up the oil before its time for a chsnge. I don't understand. Also ive seen numerous white Sorentos on the road and most of them have the same paint problem on the roof right above windshield. Its peeling off and getting worse. Also cracking around kia symbol on rear hatch. It started with rust spots then, cracking then paint peeling. The engine problem seems to be a wide spread problems with kia owners and the paint obviously is a defect from the factory. Love my Sorento but need these issues fixed.
Oil consumption test performed and vehicle is still consuming/burning oil at a rate of 1 to 2 quarts every few weeks / engine knocking continuous / kia of irvine continues to provide no answers and wasted my time on a recent scheduled visit and said there were no recalls and upon looking up the recall status it states there are 4 , answers are needed on the status of this vehicle , thank you.
Every 500 miles I am adding a quart of oil to my 2014 kia Sorento. Plus the oil light is not turning on when the dipstick is showing below low on oil. . Read more...
My 2017 kia Sorento has 73,000 miles and before the last oil change I observed the oil light came on. The kia dealer informed me that my engine is burning oil and it was 2 quarts low on oil. I have the 100,000 mile warranty on the SUV. Kia dealer service inform me to comeback after 1,000 miles and they will check it again. The engine should not be burning oil at 73,000 miles. I get my oil change every 3,000 miles.
My 2016 kia Sorento is having oil consumption issues. I know that you are well aware of this problem with many of the engines on several kia models. I have followed all of the instructions that kia had recommended to monitor oil levels and now kia is claiming they are no longer "honoring" that type of testing. My biggest issue is that you are aware of this horrible problem which could ultimately cause serious injury or worse yet death if one of these kias engines dies out on the highway without warning. It has not happened to me yet but I was just reading plenty of reviews about this happening. I fear for my life and pray whenever I go out and drive. Please take note once again of this critical issue surrounding these vehicles. I had a kia before this but never again when they are defaulting on their obligation to fix this huge problem. And shame on you for not backing consumers having these issues!!!! it is a disgrace that a foreign car company comes in and profits off of America and doesn't back it's own product. Corporate greed at its greatest. What are you going to do to keep us safe on the roads with these things happening on the roadway?????????????? thank you, barbara simone (518) 231-6184 please feel free to contact me. You need to do something about this!!!!!!!!!!!.
Tl-the contact owns 2012 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle oil consumption warning light illuminated as the contact veered to the shoulder of the road, turned the vehicle off and back on. The contact mentioned the vehicle shudder when its idling. The vehicle was taken to the dealer smith Chevrolet inc 1911 eastern Ave, gallipolis, OH 45631 where it was diagnosed that the engine barring where faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also mentioned NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 as a possible soultion to the failure but the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to contact NHTSA to file a complaint failure the mileage was 102,000. Ck.
Car kicks when driving. Oil burns out after oil change. Every week or 2 I have to put oil in. Problem still continues after kicking problem was somewhat fixed. Car still kicks but not as hard today. Engine oil is still burning up quickly.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 kia Sorento. The contact stated while checking the oil, she discovered there was no oil in the engine. The contact had the vehicle towed to southside kia (9401 atlantic blvd, jacksonville, FL 32225, (904) 406-7779). The dealer suggested that an oil consumption test be performed. The contact was informed to drive the vehicle for 1,000 miles and then have the oil level checked to determine the amount of oil that was consumed per 1,000 miles. The contact was informed that the test needed to be performed three times for a total of 3,000 miles. The contact stated that the warranty would be expired at 100,000 miles. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle owner would be responsible for the cost of the consumption test if the failure was not related to the engine. The contact was provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 97,000.
We change our own oil, and, noticed at approx. 5,000 miles after oil change, oil was down approx. 2. 5-3 quarts. Changed oil again, 1,000 miles later, oil down 1. 5-2 quarts. Took to kia dealer, they changed oil again, started oil consumption test. After this, drove home, went to runsome errands, engine lights starts flashing, couldn't get more than 45-50 mph out of it. Had it towed to kia dealer, they done reprogramming of ecm. Not even 100 miles later, was on highway, dropped to 45 mph again, with semi truck behind us. Was not far from dealer, so, drove it there. Has been there since 3/23/20. Kia allegedly can't get tech there due to pandemic, but, isn't there telecommunications tech work that could be done? as rentals have to be renewed evey 30 days due to insurance regulations, dealer already paid approx. $1300 on first rental vehicle, now in second rental. Which is going to cost more, rental or repairs/replacement? is kia corp. Trying to bankrupt their dealers by doing this practice? this vehicle is under a certified pre-owned warranty, as well as, an extended warranty as well. Dealer also frustrated kia corp. Keeps putting them off as well, with 4 vehicles sitting on their lot, waiting. For tech as well. I just wonder nationwide, how many dealers are having same issues, and how many other owners/vehicles are affected?.
I have a 2012 kia Sorento. I had issues with a recall when the dealer used a probe to look for metal shavings in my motor. Car started burning oil. After 4 months of arguing with the dealer, kia finally replaced the motor in January 2018. Now on 3/9/2020 I am 4 hours away from home. I smell gas and then my car burst into flames. Kia has a recall on "certain" 2012 kia Sorento's however my VIN is not one. If that is the case then why did mine catch fire.
My 2014 kia Sorento recently had an engine failure. I was driving on the freeway at 65 mph and heard a loud knocking so I started to exit the freeway by the time I got to the middle lane I heard a loud pop coming from the front of the vehicle. I lost all acceleration and coasted to the side of the freeway. Before the engine quit working there were no warning lights on my dash and temperature of the engine was normal. As soon as the engine quit working the oil light and engine light came on. After getting it towed 17 miles and 150 dollars later I was told by the mechanic the engine was completely seized up. They checked the oil levels and said it was half of a quart low. This vehicle is only 6 years old and all of the miles put on it are freeway miles driving to and from work. This engine has been burning up oil like crazy everytime I took it in for routine maintenance or replaced the oil myself it has been low and very black. The maintenance has been kept up on per spec's of the manufacturer.
The engine has been burning oil very quickly. We had an oil change and around 5,000 miles later, there was zero oil left in the car - the oil light came on. Then it was fine until the next oil change. Then less than 3,000 miles later, the same thing happened. Added 4 quarts of oil to it and about a month later, it was low again and the oil was very dark.
My care burns oil yo almost empty before the 3000 mile oil change.
Engine oil burnout - within 3 weeks of a fresh oil change the oil completely burned out of the crank case / 2 oil changes performed within 3 weeks , no oil leaks or smoke from exhaust , vehicle was in motion and immediately herd a knock and pulled over and shut vehicle off before any major damages could occur.
I drive kia sorrento 2012, its at 117,000 miles. For the last 6000 miles my car has started burning through abnormally high amounts of oil. It doesn't give any warning signs and the low oil warning light never comes on. For my last 3 services which were in June, August and November, all well before I was due for oil change, I was told that there was next to none oil left in my car. On Nov 16th, while I was driving on a freeway my car without giving me any warning or indication that oil was running low, decelerated from 60mph to 30mph and the check engine sign started flashing. I pulled aside and got it towed to a nearby car auto repair shop. I was told that there was next to none oil in my car and because it had been running without any oil my engine was all damaged. I was told that my kia needed engine replacement. I was also told that the mechanic didn't find any leaks or other reasons why oil might be getting consumed so quickly. I searched online about why I might be having this problem and found that many other kia owners across America are experiencing same problems with abnormally high amount of oil consumption. Since then I have been trying to get in touch with kia corporate to see if they might be able to help me figure out what has been happening but I have been unsuccessful.
I brought my 2012 kia Sorento to dorschel for the sc147 recall a couple month ago. They said my engine was not being replaced because kia is only replacing engines for this recall if they stop working. They did not tell me I had any other issue with my engine, although kia's recall tells them to inspect to the engine for issue. I was directed to keep driving it until the engine stops working. Now my engine has major issues. While driving it was having tought time picking up speed when I enter a 55mph road and I could not accelerate fast. The car kept sputtering and shuttering, causing a car to almost hit me from behind. This is only a 2 months after they inspected it and found no issues. Dorschel kia says it is a timing chain failure and compression problem, bent valves and such, oil sludge and that this has nothing to do with the sc147. I also had really excessive oil consumption (1qt every 300 miles) since the sc147 inspection was performed. Why? now kia company is saying this is not theirfault. I believe either dorschel was negligent in their engine inspection performed the sc147 recall, or the engine sludge was caused by the root caused of the sc147 problem, which caused the other issues. Or something during the inspection of the engine for the sc147 problem caused others issues that lead to my current situation. I had no engine problems before I brought my vehicle into dorschel kia 2 months ago and then I had all of this happen. What did dorschel kia really do to my car to make it fail so quick? this seems very suspicious to me.
At 65,000 miles my 4 cyl. Sorento started losing oil. The light came on once when no oil on dipstick. Original owner. Contacted kia, said to do oil consumption check. Have done. Using 2 quarts every 1000 miles. They are dragging their feet, not responding to my emails requesting a solution. It's nothing I've done. What good is their 100k warranty when they won't fix the problem. Communication with kia customer assistance very slow and poor. This should be a recall or class action suit based on the number of complaints I see posted.
Feb 07 2020 - mileage: 59,211 - this is my last 'excessive oil consumption' test with dealership. My 2017 kia Sorento was down 1. 7 quarts of oil (more like 2 qts as the engine was hot and the tech agreed, more like 2 qts. ) after 1002 miles, that averages out to about 1 qt oil every 500 miles. The tech said he would submit all testing results to Kia Motors. He also said to check oil every 1000 miles and to add oil if needed, do not let it run out of oil. My next oil change is sch at 61176 miles, that's about 1965 miles, I will probably have to add 3. 93 qts before my sch oil change if still 1 qt. Every 500 miles still applicable. The original dipstick was yellow, they replaced it with an 'orange' one ever since the testing began. They said the original dipstick was not reading correctly and all kias having this 'excessive oil consumption' problem will have dipsticks replaced with the orange ones.
