Kia Motor Sorento owners have reported 79 problems related to engine burning oil (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor Sorento based on all problems reported for the Sorento.
Test 5 - oil consumption - mileage 61,719 (down 1 quart at 1030 miles after Mar 09 2020 work order) we had to remove the oil dipstick seal morning of 4/19/2020, my husband had a medical emergency and I did not want the engine to seize up, catch fire, as the gainesville, GA kia dealership told us it would do if the engine ran out of oil. The dealership does not approve of removing the seal, they take oil consumption 'protocol' over the coronavirus protocol. I did not cancel the oil consumption testing, I will continue to report oil consumption every 1000 miles. Kia motors USA has 4 consecutive tests, all 4 tests prove oil down 1-2 quarts every 1000 miles. This vehicle is garaged, garage is attached to home, if catches fire it could cause injuries or deaths. It's a 2 family duplex. Nhtsa - help, please help !!.

January 17, 2020, I am still under the excessive oil consumption testing. I went to the dealership as they told me to on Dec. 30 2019, I met my 1000 miles, it was down 1 qt. Of oil. The dipstick is 'sealed' to the electric harness, they claim it will not catch on fire. Hopefully it won't. So far with the testing, the oil is down 1 quart every 1000 miles, the engine only holds abt. 5 1/4 quarts of oil. The manufacturer recommends oil change every 7500 miles. The service tech said they are having excessive oil consumption problems with the 2. 0 and 2. 4 engines, I have a 2. 4 engine. This vehicle is scary, I feel unsafe driving it, it may catch on fire. Service tech told me it will take a total of 4 sealed dipstick testing, I have two more to go.
I have been trying to get the kia dealership in gainesville, GA to postpone the oil consumption testing due to the coronavirus concerns my husband and I have. The manager of the dealership said that the oil consumption testing has a protocol, the testing cannot be cancelled. I keep telling everyone, the dealership, Kia Motors, that I did not say to cancel the testing, just to postpone it. The same as the united states supreme court did, they put their work on hold due to concerns of the coronavirus concerns. I cannot check my oil consumption because the oil dipstick is sealed, if I remove it the manager of the dealership said I would void my warranty and it would be my responsibility, my liability if something goes wrong. This dealership put the seal on the dipstick, this dealership needs to remove it. I will continue the testing after the coronavirus concerns are over. The dealership nor Kia Motors will authorize me in writing that it is okay for me to have the seal on the oil dipstick removed and that I will not void my warranty. Nhsta please help me !!.
Test#5 - excessive oil consumption testing. Mileage 61,719 - down 1 quart of oil at 1030 miles (from Mar. 09 2020 work order. ) we had to remove the zip tie morning of 4/19/2020 in order to check oil consumption. My husband had a medical emergency and I did not want to be stranded in case the engine seized up, caught fire, as the dealership service manager told us it will do if no oil in engine. The kia dealership in gainesville, GA does not approve of removing seal, the oil testing has a 'protocol'. The oil testing protocol is more important to them then the coronavirus protocol. I did not cancel my oil consumption testing, I will continue to monitor engine oil every 1000 miles and report oil consumption. Kia motors knows of the four consecutive tests that the dealership did, oil consumption down 1-2 quarts every 1000 miles. This vehicle is garaged, garage attached to home, if vehicle catches fire, there may be serious injuries or deaths. It's a 2 family duplex.

Around 60,000 miles, my kia Sorento is losing oil without any signs of leak or burning. Just disappearing. Have completed 3 total 1,000 mile oil consumption tests at kia of west chester, PA and I have asked them to start a claim. It is losing at least a full quart after 1,000 miles. I continue to check oil, purchase quarts and am anxious with concern over the legal issues driving a vehicle with engine recalls and the chance of losing a life due to engine and connecting rod malfunction. 2nd owner and purchased Feb. 2017 from ardmore Nissan (ardmore, PA).
My kia Sorento is burning excessive oil. I had it at a dealership 6/2019 for a recall to replace the engine. I was told it was ok at that time. Shortly after the recall evaluation was completed, the check engine light came on in 07/2019 due to loss of oil about 800 miles after an oil change at mineke. They topped it off and had me come back in after 1000 miles and told me I had an oil consumption issue and to take it to a kia dealership to follow up. I went to an official kia dealership to have it documented by them and they did the oil consumption test again. They said at the time the spark plugs and engine looked ok and there is a known issue but mine would not qualify to be replaced at this time and I could keep topping of the oil if needed. I brought it back after putting on 950 miles because the oil was very low. It had burned through 2. 5 quarts. They said the engine is bad and 2 out of 3 spark plugs are starting to go. The engine should be replaced but it does not meet the criteria kia has to be covered under kia's extended warranty so it would be out of pocket. The vehicle only has 136,331 miles on it now and I still owe money on it so I would like to keep it but don't want to pay $6,200 to replace the engine. I called kia directly and they created a case number. They recommended getting second opinion from another kia dealership. Now I have to start this process over again. Meanwhile, my engine is getting worse and it is concerning me that it is not safe to drive. I found a class action lawsuit against kia with reports of engines catching on fire. One death and 130 people have been injured. I drive with my two children who are 9 and 5 and I don't feel comfortable putting them at risk while I wait for a decision on this. At the very least I wanted this reported as a safety issue.

Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. The contact stated that there was sludge build-up in the engine. As a result, there was a hole in the engine compartment. The contact drove to kirby kia of ventura (6424 auto center dr, ventura, CA 93003, (805) 256-7021) and was informed that they had no way to repair the vehicle. The mechanic stated that the contact refused the diagnostic test; however, the contact requested an oil consumption test and was denied. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 112,000.
The engine burns oil fast. Regular driving after we bought it was ok. We started hearing a mystery crunch noise, but it was a road trip that made the oil problem apparent. We took a trip of 300 miles. At the beginning of the trip the oil was full, when we got there it was almost dry. The crunch noise increased. We took it to a mechanic at our destination and he filled it up again. Thr crunchy noise was gone. When we got back home after driving 300 miles again the oil was at low level. I am afraid to drive this car with my kids in it. I will check my oil everytime I drive but thay is not sustainable. I worry what else is wrong with this engine.

After getting an oil change in March my check engine light went on in early June. The dealership is stating that the engine will seize and there was no oil. My car did not burn or leak oil. The dealer is stating it's an open recall but kia is denying.

Prior to the date oof 05/24/2019, I contacted the dealership in which I bought the vehicle to ask to set up an appointment because my car was burning oil. This was in June 2018 and at that time I was informed that nothing was wrong with my vehicle and that there was a recall out on the engine I had in my vehicle. Prior to this appointment I had one of my good friends call down and explain to the mechanic what he experienced with my vehicle, as he was a mechanic himself. I ended up paying a bill that day for some minor things. In the beginning of 2019 I got an oul changed and by March we had to add bout 3 quarts. In April 2019 I noticed over the course of about 6 weeks I put 2 quarts in my car. I made an appointment and informed the secretary on the phone about it burning oil. My father ended up taking it to the dealership that day while I was meeting him there with his vehicle. By the time I arrived my vehicle was already done being serviced. However I still managed to speak with the mechanic in which he informed me my engine was on recall and could only be replaced free of charge if the car made a klinking sound or I drove my car to the point my engine seized. I was told this is the only way the engine would be free of charge. To me and my father this didnt seem save as I travel several miles throughout a couple of month span. There are times in which I reach areas that there is no service. I also often times have my daughter with me in which worries me. Similar situation happened in April 2012, 14 months after I bought the kia Sorento. I was driving 4 hours to go back home when my vehicle started blowing cold air. Then all of a sudden all my cars lights went on and my vehicle froze up. My car started to smoke. Looking under the hood my oil cap was gone. I ended up getting another one hoping my vehicle would run. It was towed and I ended up buying a new engine.
Engine siezed while driving. I have all the maintenance records. It wasn't leaking oil or burning any. I had it towed to a mechanic, he agreed their was no leak but the oil was live sludge and it caused the car to seize. It had been less than 4000 miles since I'll had been changed.
Engine is consuming a large amount of oil. We had taken the car into the dealer to correct a recall affecting the engine oil. The dealer serviced the vehicle, then the vehicle started burning oil. We took it to a different dealer who referred us to the consumer affairs department. Consumer affairs sent it to the escalation department. The escalation department recommended that we go to a junk yard and get a used engine. They took no responsibility. We have kept this car serviced but we were told by the dealer that the car needs a new engine to the tune of $9,000.
Showing 137 miles to next service and I smelt oil burning so I had my husband check the oil and it had 0 yes 0 oil on the dipstick I had called the dealership earlier this week Tuesday the 26th to be exact and an appointment set for Tuesday April 2 as it was the earliest appointment time to get the oil changed however; after my husband checked and it showed zero oil in vehicle I took it to valvoline express care who noted oil level off dip stick on arrival and paid $66. 48 to have the oil changed I had zero indications that there was no oil in this vehicle I think the only thing that kept it from locking the engine was I changed and flushed the oil and use synthetic oil to which the dealership frowned upon as it is newer car but I prefer to use synthetic oil in all my vehicles for this purpose!! I have no clue how long it was without oil and have never smelt oil burning until last night to which I took it get serviced first thing this morning and paid out of pocket when I have an agreement with the dealership that we paid extra for to have them service the vehicle at no cost when I go!!! we take care of our vehicles if I feel it is too long before kia dealership can service the vehicle I have paid in past and always used the valvoline express care as that is where I take all my other vehicles. Please see the service comments on the attached invoice from today's service. My engine could have damage or even blown from this!!! there was no indication that it was leaking oil on the skid plate so either the dealership did not put any oil in the vehicle at my last oil change or there is something going on with my engine!!.
Car began burning excess oil at approximately 100,000 miles, began spewing blue and gray smoke when starting cold, at 111,000 miles took for diagnostic test at romeo kia kingston. Technician confirmed engine needs replacing. Although the 2. 0 liter and 2. 4 liter engines are covered under a current recall, this is a 3. 5 liter v6 engine. Contacted kia consumer affairs and was denied any assistance even though the issue is the exact same as is covered under the current recall. The car was well maintained and a modern day engine should not fail at such low mileage.
Excessive oil consumption at 92,000 miles.
At approximately 70,000 miles, problems began. First noted the coolant container was contaminated with oil and sludge. Entire system was sludged, did not know why. I had the system completely flushed and all new fluids replaced. 2 weeks later, again, the sludge appeared and coolant container filled with oil and coolant hose burned through due to the oil. The coolant hose was replaced. And again I had the entire system fluids flushed. Again, the same thing happened with sludge but this time as I was driving the car 2 miles from my home to a main street bank, smoke came from the hood. Opened the hood, smoke coming out from engine, and a sludge substance exploded throughout the car and oozed out of the car. Could no longer drive the vehicle due to engine seize concerns. Car was meticulously maintained- oil changes regularly, inspections etc. I was told I'd have to possibly get a new engined, or at the least have two head gaskets replaced at a cost of $5,500. Despite kia touting the 100,000 mile power train warranty, and after weeks of trying to get the dealer to fix it, then went up the corporate ladder speaking with corporate, I was finally told that the warranty did not apply to me because I was not the original owner!!!! this despite the fact that I purchased the car certified pre-owned from the kia dealer and was told that there was a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty that applied- that this was a selling feature!!! I could not drive the car for a couple of months while I tried to resolve the issue with kia- but they refused. There was a 2014 recall on the same car, and this car was a 2015, manufactured in 2014. I owed $9,000 on the car!!!! needing a car, I bought a used Buick for $2600 to use since it would be cheaper than renting a car, and will sell that car when needed. Can't upload the photos and the repairs info at this time.
Every time I changed the oil, I noticed it was not the same as used oil coming from my other vehicles. Engine problems started approximately 3 years ago. I was constantly checking the oil and needing to add. I took the vehicle to the kia dealer where we bought the car and they said the oil was burning up in the motor. It was getting hot. I ran two flushes on the motor and then continued my regular oil changes. In February of 2019 the motor seized up and quit while being driven on city streets. I drained 4. 5 quarts of oil from the vehicle after it was towed. I heard about the recall on various years of kia/Hyundai motors and thought this migh be the problem with my 2011 Sorento.

My Sorento feels like it's going to stall, especially when accelerating. It's also burning oil at an alarming rate. The oil lamp flickered once while driving on the highway. There is no obvious oil leak. I took it to the dealership and they said it needs a new engine it that it isn't covered under the 17v224 recall. I'm afraid that the engine is failing and that it is kia's responsibility, but they are ignoring the problem.
Took 2012 Sorento in for engine/bearings recall at 92k miles (which included an oil change by dealership). Next oil change at 98k there was apprx 1 quart of oil left. Never burned oil prior to this recall check. Thought dealership made mistake. I usually change the oil every 5k miles. Oil was changed and checked again at 2,500 miles, it was 4 quarts low. No warning lights were ever displayed. Took to dealership, performed oil consumption tests (4), consuming about 1 quart every 500 miles. Kia dealership told me unless it displays the p1326 fault code, there is nothing that kia will do - I can file a claim with kia affairs, if I want. It is burning so much oil, that if oil was change every 7,500 miles as recommended maintenance -- there would be no oil left in engine. It is burning oil -- there is no oil leaking. Engine will fail, it's a matter of when - huge safety issue. A ticking time bomb. Hope it doesn't fail while driving on the interstate. . . . Or catch fire.
Vehicle has started consuming high amounts of oil as it passed 90,000 miles. Received an oil low light and needed to add 3. 5 quarts of oil. Took to a ki dealership who noted that there were no visible leaks, but plugs were burning white. Kia corporate forces the dealer to install knock detection sensor update which voids all previous engine recalls. In the past, high oil consumption was enough to lead to engine replacement by previous recall information. Now however ki claims that once the computer system is updated all previous engine recalls are void and excessive oil consumption is no longer a valid reason even when combined with engine wear. A user must now have multiple sensor failures or engine failure, and expect to monitor oil every few hundred miles. Local dealership says their hands are tied due to requests by kia corporation.
Engine oil use every 1. 000 miles give or take car is using 1 to 1 1/2 quarts of oil. I have taking my car to the selling dealer they have done a oil consumption test and have verifyed that car is using oil. I had to take it back 3 time for them to check oil level and for them to say yep its using oil . And wenton to tell me that kia corp will not replace the engine. So every 1. 000 miles I have to put oil in it till it blows up. Thie is so sad I paid good money for this car and kia will not stand by repairs. Im a diesel truck service manager at a navastar dealer. And we would not treat are cust this way. We have replaced $30. 000 motors cause of oil use. Can you please help thanks for your time joel b neiss.
My engine oil is disappearing. The dealer has checked twice and found no evidence of leak or signs of burning oil. After 2000 to 2500 miles the engine is completely out of oil with no oil light staying illuminated. The oil light blinks for a second and goes off and would be very easy to miss. I feel that this is directly related to the non collision fire issue that this same engine is having. If I were to not see the oil light blink, the car could be driven home and have a major failure. All maintenance except one oil change has been done by two local kia dealers and at proper intervals. I have owned the car since new.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving various speeds, the vehicle shuddered and the contact noticed that the oil was low. The contact added a quart of oil every five hundred miles. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to quirk kia of manchester (1300 s porter st, manchester, nh 03103, (603) 836-7600) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced and an oil consumption test was completed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 13113751. The contact was referred to the local dealer. The failure mileage was 109,000.
Tl-the contact owns a 2016 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while stationary, the vehicle consumed an inordinate amount of oil. The contact stated that a quart of oil was consumed every 1,000 miles in the vehicle. Coral springs auto mall of coral springs, florida located at 9400 west atlantic blvd, 33071 (954)346-1009 was made aware of the failure and performed a dipstick test on the vehicle and stated that the oil consumption was normal. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed the dealer's findings. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. Ad.
Engine is consuming a large amount of oil this has occurred around the engine going over 90,000 miles. In speaking with the kia dealership, they state it is common for an engine of this age to burn oil. The engine burns about a quart every 500-600 miles. This seems excessive.
Headlight housing has become overheated and melted causing me to replace one headlight at $900. When it happened again I spliced the new housing yet the bulb keeps blowing needing replaced. There is knocking in the engine that gets worse when my speed increases and have been told that it sounds like the engine is not getting enough oil. The head gasket has been replaced and it still seems to be burning or losing oil. The indicator lights on the dashboard all randomly come on and then go off. While driving the car seemed to lose power at times then would die at a stop light. This all has been going on for the past six months or more. In the past year I have paid $1900 plus on random repairs.
116,000 miles. I have been changing the oil every 2k miles since I found out about an engine problem with my make/model. No matter how many engine flushes and engine cleaners I use it burns oil like crazy. Yesterday I drove 1 block from my house before realizing the car was not accelerating beyond 20 miles per hour. No matter how hard you step on the gas it won't reach more than 2 on the rpm dial.
Vehicle I burning oil(not leaking) and kia dealer and kia headquarters in California have diagnosed the problem and acknowledged this problem. However, their policy is not to replace the engine until the engine blows (must show the proper fault code). It is smoking and the burning smell has been there for 3+ months. Returned to dealer 3 wks ago and was told the same. I'm told the engine has a lifetime warranty, but that won't matter if the car catches fire and then my insurance has to pay, not kia. This is unacceptable. Multiple r. O. 's on problem with rick case kia at gwinnett place in duluth, GA. 770-476-2800.
Car has been burning oil for awhile, so we are constantly topping it off. We are diligent about routine oil changes. There has also been a clicking on hard acceleration that has no known cause, even after being investigated on 2 occasions. Yesterday, while on the highway, the car lost power. Got to an exit and had car towed to shop. Got the call today that there is a hole in one of the pistons and entire engine needs to be replaced. Contacted kia and this year is not included in the multiple engine recall list. Car has approximately 126,000 miles with a repair estimate of $7000.
My vehicle is at 117k miles. It uses approx 6 qts of oil/3000 miles. I cannot get up to speed on the highway as it will not auto shift down with any acceleration rpms run and stay at 6,000 when trying to get to 70mph - it is included in sc147 recall, however the dealership is stating it passed the recall test and it's the transmission not the engine. Transmission does not burn oil at 6 qts/3000 miles.
