Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor Sorento based on all problems reported for the Sorento.
I was driving and was stopped in a turning lane waiting to turn when the car stopped working and wouldn't do anything. I had it towed to a kia dealer and was told the engine had seized. There was no reason for this to have happened on a newer vehicle. I was told there was sludge, much like I am finding a lot of other people with these vehicles were told. It cost me $5700 to have a used engine put in that will likely fail as well, as after researching this is a common problem in these vehicles. There was a recall up to year 2014 for known engine failure and it should be extended to 2015 because the problem is beyond the year 2014 engines.

After kia dealership installed the knock sensor software update in October 2018, the engine went into limp home mode with engine light blinking in the month of January 2019. Dealership advised me engine failed and would be replaced under kia warranty for this issue. Vehicle has 57,000 miles on it. Problem now is dealership says new engine won't be sent to them for 3-4 weeks. Then additional week to install. It's already been there over two weeks. They did provide loaner. Correction this occurred in December 2018, not January 2019.
I filed below complaint number 11229677 and have heard nothing. So trying again. Last fall I received a letter and had a ksds sensor installed to detect and prevent engine failure. In Mar the ksds kicked in and the car was difficult to drive. Luckily my wife was only 2 miles from home. If this were to happen on the highway seems like a major hazard. Having the engine seize with the real issue is probably worse. We took the vehicle in immediately to the dealer, who gave us a loaner, then called us back the next day to say the vehicle was covered for the extended warranty and the engine would need replaced. Several weeks later we checked on when the veh would be fixed, we were told they were done with our vehicle. They did something to the wire harness and a test on the engine to say the vehicle was ok. I would like an explanation on the situation and why it is safe to drive the vehicle. 1. Why did the ksds kick in and why is my vehicle ok now? 2. Did they do something (disable) to prevent the ksds from kicking in again? 3. Did they enhance it to better detect a more serious problem? what exactly did they do with the wire harness/ksds? 4. Can you explain the engine test done that verifies my engine is ok, and for how long does this apply? 5. How quickly can the real issue happen? 6. Will my car still be covered by the lifetime warranty? 7. Is it safe to drive on the highway?.

Our 80,000 mile vehicle experienced a complete engine failure out of the blue, no warning. We had taken very good care of the car. It is not part of the gdi engine recall, we have a dual overhead cam (dohc) engine. The dealer ship refused assistance as it is not part of the recall, though the same problem occurred with the engine. The entire engine must be replaced.
Engine failure while driving down a major highway in heavy traffic. Same issue as recalled engines but kia refuses to address the issue on this vehicle.

~tl the contact owns a 2013 kia Sorento. While driving from new jersey to florida, the contact noticed that the oil level was low. The contact stopped to add oil to the vehicle. Once the contact arrived in florida, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a kia dealer in florida, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle remained at the dealer with possible oil and engine failures. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling), but she was not informed of it when the vehicle was purchased in July of 2017 from the kia dealer in new jersey. The failure mileage was 78,900.
Purchased a used 2015 kia Sorento from a used car lot on February 15, 2018. I've experienced no issues with the vehicle until August 19, 2018 while driving home from work. While driving on the freeway, and accelerating, the vehicle completely stalled. We pulled the vehicle over and tried our best to get it to restart. It had to be towed home. A certified mechanic inspected the vehicle and confirmed the kia had complete engine failure due to the engine seizing. Please contact me for inspection documentation (currently at work and unable to upload the receipt).
The vehicle was being driven down the highway and it began knocking. It was pulled over almost immediately (within a mile). Oil was checked and although it had regular service, it registered low. After about a half a quart of oil was added, the oil registered at proper level. When trying to re-start the engine it failed to start. The vehicle was towed to dealership where it was determined that the vehicle had catastrophic engine failure and would need a complete engine replacement. Price quoted was $15,000! they claimed this was due to the engine needing to be replaced with a smaller block (they don't make the 3. 5 l anymore) and the modifications that it needed. The car was purchased used, had 125,054 miles on it and had no warning prior to the initial knocking that occurred on that day.
We bought our car in October 2016. During our transition from new york to georgia our engine failed on us. My husband and I took it to a kia autobody shop in greenville south carolina. They fixed it free of charge due to a recall on our specific year, make and model of our car. We then proceeded as usual taking care of it getting the standard oil change and check ups. There were no signs or warnings for what would happen four months after. On July 10, 2018 at 2:45 pm my husband was driving home. The car started shaking my husband pulled over. There was black smoke coming out of the car. He turned the car off and stepped out a few seconds after our car exploded on him. Counting our blessings that he, nor I and our three kids were not in the car. We reported to kia that same day. We are currently waiting to hear back from some one.

My car is starting to rattle on cold starts only. It now has 142000 and still has the issue. I took my car to summit place kia and they said my car doesn't fall under technical bulletin 140 even though it falls under the engine type and manufacture date. I do routine maintenance with records and they said I missed the replacement window because I bought the car used. After reading multiple other complaints they have had the same issue then complete engine failure. When will kia take responsibility and replace the engines that they manufactured incorrectly? I have been dealing with kia since June of 2018 to help resolve this issue because 140 describes the issue to the exact problem and the sound provided matches the same issue I have. Bulletin 140 describes what needs to be fixed and how it needs to be fixed but kia wont replace the defective problem and wont take responsibility for it.
I am writing to you in regards to my 2016 Sorento engine failure back in June of 2018. The engine failed without warning on the highway and had to be towed to the nearby dealership. I was denied engine replacement under the warranty because I was unable to provide oil service records. I was billed in the amount of $3800 and in light of the onslaught of kia engine failures, I ask that kia refund me in full. I have requested this via letter.
While driving 70mph on highway vehicle started to have knock in engine I pulled off at next exit and as I was exiting vehicle lost power and stopped. Know warning or instrument lights lit up before or after engine failure. Vehicle only has 10,100 miles, last oil change was at 7,100 with recommendation for oil change at 10,194 miles. Called kia customer service and they were rude and not helpful at all.

2013 kia Sorento. Consumer writes in regards to engine failure. The consumer stated the manufacturer and dealer were both notified but could not offer a solution.
At 89k miles, I was driving approximately 65 mph on an incline on vacation 700 miles from home, I heard a bunch of noise coming from underneath the vehicle. All the lights on the dash lit up and engine stalled. I coasted across 2 lanes of traffic and came to a stop on the side of the road. I had the car towed to the closest mechanic for inspection. The rod had blown a hole in my engine with no prior indication that anything was wrong with the vehicle. I called kia consumer affairs who told me to have the car towed to a kia dealership for inspection which I did. The cost for repair is $10k , kia states that my 2. 4l engine is not part of the recall or affected engines. My car has been maintained and the oil was changed before we left on this trip. Both the service manager at kia and the mechanic at the other shop say that this scenario is consistent with the other engine failures that are included in the recall. The lower block is in fact exactly the same engine. Heather from kia took my original case information (4/04) and said I would hear back. Two days later I called again and spoke with helena who also said she would work on it and call me back. She also said this VIN was not included in recall "yet". 7 days later and no response, I called again. This time the rep told me that helena had tried to call me and because I didn't answer the phone, she closed my case. This is a complete lie, I have my phone with me 100% of the time and have been anxiously awaiting a call. Do they not realize caller id is available for a records check? they have supposedly reopened my case and I should hear back in 48 hours. No vehicle should have an engine failure at 89k miles. Kia made money on the sale of all of these vehicles and now they are making more money on customers having to buy new engines at $10k? they will be hearing from an attorney if this is not resolved.
Tl- the contact owns a 2015 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while the driver was driving at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road. The driver power off the engine. The vehicle was restarted two hours later and was able to drive. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed but no failure code was found. The failure recurred a second time. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where a second diagnostic testing was completed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 166,000. Aw.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 kia Sorento. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and then towed to sunset kia of bradenton (4770 14th street west, (us41), bradenton, FL 34207, (941) 752-1000) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine failed due to metal shavings that were found in the engine upon inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was contacted that a used engine would be provided for the replacement; however, a labor charge would be assessed for the repair. The contact was provided case number: 12622086. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
~tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving 65 mph, the engine failed without warning. The contact heard a loud bang and observed a huge cloud of black smoke emerging from the vehicle. The check engine and other instrument panel warning indicators illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the shoulder of the road where it caught fire from underneath near the transmission. A police report was filed. The fire department extinguished the fire. Kia of lancaster, pennsylvania was made aware of the fire and stated that the exhaust hanger had melted. It was determined that rod #4 blew into the transmission, which caused the engine to fail. There were no injuries. The failure mileage was 81,000. The VIN was not available.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 kia Sorento. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle stalled and the oil warning indicator illuminated immediately afterwards. The contact coasted the vehicle to the shoulder. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (bill Dodge kia in saco, maine) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to the same dealer a month prior for an engine evaluation as per the manufacturer's recall notification. During that time, the contact was informed that the engine was fine. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and case number: 112611205 was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was invalid. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.
Engine failed at 82,000. 00 miles. This is the 2. 4l I-4 mpi engine that is not included in the recall. Vehicle is at dealer awaiting replacement engine. Technician states that the failed engine part is identical to the gdi that which was recalled. It has been a month and dealer cannot give timetable on the repair. Just that the engine is on order. Come on kia get your act together on this. Before this incident this was the best vehicle I have ever owned.
Total engine failure 2013 kia Sorento. Was traveling along highway at 55 mph, vehicle suddenly shuddered and stalled. Coasted it to the side of the road and vehicle would not start so had it towed to dealer. Was advised today there was major internal engine damage requiring a replacement engine. SUV only has 78,000 miles on and is not covered under kia 100,000 mile warranty due to the fact I am second owner and not original owner.
Vehicle experienced mechanical engine failure and immediate reduction in power while driving around 30 mph up hill. Failure at a higher speed of travel, could have resulted in significant danger to occupants. This vehicle was equipped with the 2. 4l mpi engine, which failed in a way consistent with the recalled failure of the 2. 4l gdi version. Believe kia is under-representing the scope of engine problems in the current recall campaign. The engines are failing in the region of connection rod bearings and lower block, while the main difference between the mpi and gdi versions of the engine are in the upper portion of the engine involving fuel injection. Believe the mpi version should be investigated for containing identical or very similar failure modes and manufacturing defects, as they are indeed the same engine family with many shared components.
2013 kia Sorento. Consumer writes in regards to engine failure while driving. The consumer stated the manufacturer should be responsible for having the engine replaced. The engine in the vehicle was no longer in production. Updated 10/02/2017.
Kia safety recall (#17v224) I had previously filed a complaint with the NHTSA regarding an engine failure. Please see complaint #10993259. The purpose of this complaint is a follow-up to the previously filed compliant. As you are aware, kia failed to timely notify its customers that their vehicle may have an engine defect. As you will see from my previously filed complaint, I experienced my first engine failure on April 1, 2017. Between April 1st and may 31st, I had experienced three total failures. However, as a result of the April 1st failure, I had the vehicle repaired at midas. I was not aware of the potential recall at this particular time. The repair shop replaced the timing gear and cleaned the engine, but informed me that they could not guarantee the work. The cost for these services was $1,488. 50. I also needed to replace the timing solenoids (I did not have this done at midas at the time because I did not have the money). I purchased these at auto zone for $123. 42. They were installed by a different mechanic at the cost of $125. Once the interim recall information was disseminated, in June, and once I received my vehicle back, which was June 25th, after having the engine replaced, I filed a claim for reimbursement. Kia has denied payment because they state the engine was not replaced as per their "limited warranty extention. " I later appealed and the representative left me a voice message (that I still possess) which states that it was denied because the engine was not replaced and the work was not done by kia. Problem: if I did not know about the recall at the time of failure, why am I being penalized for their faulty engine? additionally, the reimbursement is not under a warranty program but it is for a safety recall. Why am I being penalized. Kia needs to put forth a good faith effort and make its customers whole.
The contact owns a 2015 kia Sorento. While driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle shut off and the oil warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (myrtle beach kia in myrtle beach, SC) where it was diagnosed that the failure was due to an internal engine failure. The dealer recommended that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the warranty applied to the original owner only. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 73,864.
Military stationed overseas with an upcoming move to the USA (moved August 2017). Engine light illuminated on June 25 2017. Engine knock started on June 26. Towed to dealership in england on July 11. Car was ruled inoperable with engine failure on July 12. We were forced to leave our car in england due to parts availability and lack of assistance from kia. We still have not heard about parts availability nor are we in possession of our car. Nearing 3 months without our vehicle has put us in financial distress.

On April 1st, the engine on my vehicle failed. I had it towed to midas for repair. The mechanics informed me of excessive sludge in the engine that resulting in the timing gear and timing solenoids failing. On April 7th, I learned that kia was recalling specific makes and models for engine failure through a friend. Upon investigation online, I saw several stories published about the information. Subsequently, I contacted the dealer where I purchased the vehicle. Since purchase, I moved out of state. I was told to contact the nearest dealer, which I did. I had expected a return call, but never received one. I also contacted kia directly. They informed me that a recall notice would be sent to my home the week of may 19th (keep in mind it is April 7th). Nonetheless, midas replaced the timing gear at approximate $1,500 and another mechanic replaced the solenoids at $175 plus parts. He also noted that there was an issue with the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor. I contacted the local kia dealer to schedule an appointment to have the vehicle looked at. When I explained to the service representative that there was an recall on the vehicle for possible engine failure, she advised me that it was only a bulletin and to bring the car in to be inspected. The next week, when driving the vehicle to the dealer and while attempting to pass a car with an 18-wheeler coming in the opposite direction, the engine failed. I had to have the car towed to the dealership where it has been ever since. I was informed by the service department that they were working with kia because I needed a new motor, and they asked for service records. I did explain that I did not have a complete record of oil changes. See attached email. I was informed today that kia has denied my claim. The dealer is attempting to get the district manager to push for approval.
We had just left home, and were driving at approximately 40 miles per hour, and no "warning lights or indicator lights" came on, we lost all power about a quarter mile away. Coasting to the side of the road and called for road-side assistance. Had vehicle towed to dealer, and was told it was engine failure, due to seizure of engine.
Complete engine failure. While passing a large truck on a narrow two lane highway the engine completely shut down midway through the pass. Momentum allowed the car to complete the pass, but due to the speed and without power steering it was very difficult to maneuver. Fortunately I was familiar with the road and able to make it safely to a pull off. My local repair garage determined the engine is seized, with metal fragments in the oil. Have made multiple attempts to contact the dealer where the car was purchased. To date, no response. Car is currently not drivable.
Received letter from kia 'extending' the warranty to 120,000 miles to cover connecting rod problem that could result in engine failure. Several months after receiving letter and car at 147k the engine failed failed while driving on highway, kia dealer said it was failed connection rod. Now kia denies claim since past 120k. This is a known defect and should have been a recall!! very upset that kia knew of defect and is not willing to take ownership.
While traveling at 75 mph on the freeway. The compression went to zero and the vehicle stalled in a dangerous location next to a guardrail. The engine oil flowed out of the engine and there was dark smoke billowing out of the exhaust. The kia was towed home at my expense. The vehicle had service through its' entire warranty period with kia dealership. They made major repairs as well as oil changes for compliance with warranty. The vehicle is out of warranty by 20k. Kia will not cover the engine replacement which is needed. This is the same pattern of mechanical failure regarding engine oil problems leading to catastrophic engine failure and costly repairs.
The vehicle was in motion 35mph when suddenly all the lights in the panel flashed and the vehicle came to a complete stop. The dealer diagnosed the car with engine failure . They refused to cover the damage under warranty and claim that is due to lack of maintenance even though we provided them with service records. This is a faulty engine and kia is refusing to stand by their product.
