My check engine light came on while driving. The car did not seem to be handling any different then normal, aside from a recent rattling sound on start up that would lessen after idling/running for a few minutes. I took it in to get the code read, and was given a code indicating the timing cam was off. Once I gets took it into the dealership it was determined I needed a new engine due to metal shavings found in my oil filter and pan. The oil was also noted to be very low, despite me having performed the oil changes at proper intervals. I since have learned about the engine recalls for the same year, but in the smaller 4 cylinder 2. 0 and 2. 4l engines. Upon learning about this and looking further into it, I had read that on several consumer websites that others with the same year and larger 3. 3l v6 engine as mine were having the same issue of engine failure due to metal shavings found despite also performing proper maintenance of the vehicle. So my issue is now I need a mew engine as have others, but it is not recognized as part of the issue with the smaller engine 2015 Sorento's.

The issue began at approximately 90,000 miles and is ongoing. The engine burns excessive amounts of oil between oil changes; up to six quarts. There are no oil leaks. The engine makes a rattling noise on acceleration and loses power. I had the valve cover gasket replaced in April 2020. The issues persisted following the repair.

Tl- the contact owns a 2014 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving, a loud rattling noise occurred. The vehicle stalled. The oil warning light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was restarted and was able to drive to an independent mechanic, where the vehicle stalled once again and was unable to restart. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed and the contact was informed that the engine was taken a lot of oil which cause the gear to wear causing the rattling noise. The engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000. Aw.

On the interstate the car missed & died. Tried to start and it made a rattling sound. A TN trooper sd it sounds like timing chain and we had to tow it home 75 miles $500. A Ford master mech sd in 20 yrs he never saw this b4. Oil level was full but the oil wasn't getting to the engine and the crank cracked in 3 spots. Called local kia maryville TN & she sd it was over the 100,000 mile warranty and I bought it used. . No telling what the other dealer did to it. Still I do to tow it to kia parkside knoxville TN and pd them almost $200 to tell me the exact same thing; he'd been a mech for 20+ yrs and had no idea how that could even happen. They won't fix it though the recall is for the 2. 0 liter engine, mine is a 2. 4 2011. (my car is the 2012 body style made in 2011) they will sell me another engine. We brought the car home and I tweeted about it. Kiamotors_america dm'd me offering help. They denied my claim entirely because my engine isn't part of the recall, even though my issue is the same. I found thousands of ppl just like me being told the same thing. I'm on ss disability paying $267/mo + full cov ins since Nov. I have 2 specialists 100 miles in opp directions that I have no car to go to. I watch my 3yr old grandson and was going to the store for my mom who has stage 4 lung cancer. I would tweet news articles warning ppl and kiaamerica blocked me. I couldn't talk to them if I tried. I thought I filed a complaint here once b4, I don't see it though. I was thinking of trying my senator. Kia is reckless, unprofessional and has no concern whatsoever about human lives. I wish I knew a good lawyer, this has almost destroyed me.

Purchased vehicle a year ago and already problems with engine. Several months ago while on highway my engine began to seize and I had to coast the vehicle carefully to the side of the road. Thought problem was resolved then again as preparing to turn onto my street through an intersection the engine seized again. When this happens I cannot accelerate. This was very scary as I had my 2 young girls in the car with me the second time this happened. I quickly put the car in park, turned off ignition and turned back on after a few seconds. The car started up right away but then a loud clicking/rattling sound began and has not stopped making sound since. At this point I believe it is a problem with the engine which I have been reading is a common problem with kia.
Transmission problems like not getting into gear or jerking when shifting and engine seem to loose power or not have enough also there is a noise the a/c making a rattling noise and vibrating .
Tl- the contact owns a 2014 kia Sorento. The contact stated that each time the vehicle engine start, a rattling noise would occured coming from the engine. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, depressing the accelerator going up a hill, the vehicle failed to accelerated struggling to go up the hill. , once the vehicle go up the hill a rattling noise would occured. No warning indicator lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to nalley kia dealer, (7849 mall pkwy, lithonia, GA 30038, (678) 374-3820) and was diagnosed that the bearing falling into the engine and would needed a new engine. The vehicle was not repaired and still remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,999. Aw.
I purchased my vehicle less than 2 years ago. I received regular oil changes on the vehicle, with the last one being 3 weeks ago. Last week, I heard a loud rattling noise coming from the engine, upon acceleration. The next day, when I tried to start it the noise got louder. I contacted my warranty company and the had it towed to a local repair shop. The repair shop stated that the oil was very dirty and contaminated with metal, an issue that kia has had with their engines. The paperwork from my last oil change is currently in my vehicle, but the warranty company stated that I need every maintainence record since I had the vehicle for them to move forward. Who keeps almost 2 years of oil changes? I contacted kia and told them the situation and how I only have the last oil change record, which she stated that's fine and that they probably won't even need them and they stated their had recalls on the engine sensors in this model that were supposed to alert you before the engine failure. They towed the vehicle to a kia dealership to handle to situation from there. The dealership called me, before even looking at the vehicle and asked for the maintenance records. He is supposed to look at the vehicle on Monday and we will see from there. My wuestion is that with all of the complaints about the faulty engines on these modeks, why has nothing been done about it? are you waiting for someone to be severely injured to do so? why are these vehicles still allowed to be purchased?.
My burgundy 2012 kia ex I purchased in 2017 has been giving me no problems I love the SUV until 6/18/2019 when I started up the SUV an there was a rattling noise in the engine which never happened before when the noise quieted down I proceeded on route 51 an gassing the vehicle the noise comes back an it sometimes feel like I'm going to break down an I dont want to have a accident I saw there are some recalls on this SUV that a clearly wasnt aware of an I just want to get this resolved.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving 20 mph, the contact approached a red light and the engine made an abnormal rattling sound. When the contact placed the vehicle into park and back into drive, the noise stopped and the check engine oil indicator illuminated. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 134,000.
While driving on a highway I heard a loud rattling sound coming from the front of the vehicle. I pulled over and ended up having the vehicle towed. The issue was diagnosed and will require complete engine replacement.

Ever since we took our kia for the recall service and they "fixed it" turns out the made it worse and now the engine makes a loud rattling sound, the breaks which are new have horrible performance and the electrical issues we are having with the odometer and the transmission sensors due to the recall as well but the local kia dealership that "fixed it" will not take a look at what they brok without us having to pay them for it we have had no accidents and it gets maintenance done on time.
2012 kia Sorento -similar to others, oil pressure light and check engine light came on. Rattling noise heard during acceleration. My mechanic informed me main rear seal blown. Called kia and learned my engine is not included in the current recall. After reading other reports, seems like kia may need to expand the recall to include other engines in the same time frame.
When my wife and I started our family we were so happy to purchase the 2015 sorrento , 92,000 miles and 3 years later the engine locks up out of nowhere. I was going about 60 on the expressway and the engine started making a weird rattling noise less that 10 seconds later the car lost power steering the brakes were not very responsive. After a near death experience of trying to navigate to the safety of the emergency lane, I began to look up this issue. Kia had a recall on the engines from 2011-2014 for the same issue. Every post or review I read, the customers had experienced the same issue as my 2015. The people that had 2015 or newer who experienced these same issues was told that the best warranty in the business will not apply unless you have had all oil changes done at a kia dealership or have all receipts of maintenance done to the car. If they did have all receipts they were told because the oil changes were not done by kia the warranty will not apply. Catch 22? my 2005 expedition has 218,000 miles and still runs great. My 93 Cadillac sedan deville have 157,000 miles and stills runs great. But some how the non american car I purchased died in 3 years and 92,000 miles. As a high school teacher every student I come in contact with for the next 15 years will be scared away from this company. Im downtrodden because I know that the corporate entity called kia is going to fight tooth and nail to say there engine in the 2015 in not faulty and I almost died because they have faulty engines. I made sure to always change the oil in this car before the due date because it transported my wife and child. My family has had a lot of cars from all sorts of makes, never seen this happen to a car so quickly and without warning!.
VIN is knade243x96586586 2013 Sorento awd - after driving to san diego and back to portland or, our engine began to putter and had issues accelerating and smelled like it was on fire. We also noticed a rattling sound that increasingly got louder. Once home the engine light came on so we took it to the shop we get all of maintenance done and they said that they spoke to kia and from what they see and hear, we will need to get a new engine. They even said they would not work on the engine due to liability concerns. I then called a kia dealership and they said it sounds like I need a knew engine, even with out bringing it to them. Then I took it to the kia dealership I purchased it from. They said it would cost about 500 bucks to have the shop open the engine up but from the sounds and smell they said I will need to get a new engine. Kia has stated that my car is out of warranty and that the engine is not the one that was recalled and in a lawsuit already. The issue with that engine is the same as my engine now. A car that has been maintain religiously by the owners manual and is only 5 years old of which I owned it for 2 of those years, with 125874 miles should not fail like this. I have been trying to work with kia corprate but they keep coming back with I will need to pay for the new engine because the failure was due to poor maintenance (not true) and because the engine I have is no longer being made or used by kia. The cost is between 5000 and 10000 dollars and their good will offer was to pay 1200 of that. They haven't even opened up the engine to find out whats wrong. . . .
"takata recall" the engine makes a loud whinning sound constantly, start up, driving, and while sitting still. At times while driving it will feel like the car skips (like the engine will shut off, it also will not shift through gears, sometimes it will sit at the rpm of 3 and doesn't want to shift out of gears. This is while using both the automatic and manual driving.
I was driving headed to get on the hi-way, heard a noise and a whine and then my car began to run bad. Shaking and like no power steering or something. As I was trying to stop and pull over there was a rattling sound. I am being told 2 things. But they all come down to a bolt that is said to have come loose and cause damage to the camshaft and harmonic balancer. Which I have seen several complaints about and your company is not owning this issue or assisting to have the issue repaired or recalled and research shows you are well aware of the issue, as there was a class action suit that you settled on in 2017. However, I did not purchase my car or have issues with the bolt until after then. What are the options for ppl who are now experiencing this? I have checked with the previous owner and the vehicle was not repaired for this problem and they have no record of being a part of the suit. I would appreciate someone contacting me concerning this and options for repair or replacement immediately. Thank you. I could have died has I already gotten on the hi-way or been going much faster. Only by the grace of god did that not happen. I pray that your company is ready to take ownership and offer assistance to those who bought and continue to use your products.

The contact owns a 2013 kia Sorento. While driving various speeds, the contact heard a rattling noise under the hood. The noise became extremely loud when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The contact noticed the rattling noise coming from the engine and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be taken apart. Additionally, the contact stated that the mechanic recommended that the engine be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 12519740, but did not offer any further assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
On 09/10/2017 while driving a 2012 kia Sorento down the highway I heard a rattling noise from the engine with a loud bang a few seconds later. There was smoke coming from under the hood. I researched and found that on 03/17/2017 kia announced a recall for 2012 Sorentos. Kia's recall: sc147: " bearing wear may result in engine seizure" this is on kia's and NHTSA's websites. [ NHTSA campaign # 17v224000 "machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine"] I contacted kia's customer service at 1800-333-4542 and bethany told that my 2012 kia Sorento was not eligible for the recall because the VIN # was not part of the recall. She said that I could take it to the dealer and they would check the other 2 recall though. When the vehicle was towed I looked under the vehicle to see oil pouring out from a 3 inch hole in the block, toward the rear of the vehicle, where the thrown rod broke the block. Oil is changed every three months and the vehicle has 120,129 miles on it. The cost of a used engine alone is near $3000, plus labor to install a motor that could do the same thing. I would like Kia Motors to replace the defective engine with a new engine at no cost.
This kia Sorento makes a very high over-revving noise while driving up the street. The kia often seems to try to find the gear it needs to be in while driving and makes a loud engine noise when going up hill or driving more than 20 mph. This kia also makes a internal clicking noise when making right turns, which is often worse when turning on an incline. The engine has a loud rattle noise when started and the car is often hard to start, meaning when I turn the ignition key, the car may start 50 percent of the time on the first start.

I received a recall letter #17v224 on my kia. I recently took it back to the kia dealship I leased it from and service department ran a test on it and changed the oil which was changed in April. I was advise I need to buy a cabin air filter of $60. 00. Which I can't afford because I'm on short term on my job. I have complain about rattle noise from the engine and sounds from the bearing or axle. I lately been having problems with air blowing and only one aux plug work. I always having to get tires fix and aired up. My sister was killed last year in a SUV that had a recall on it same as my kia does and this kindy have me nervous of driving my kia but this is my only transportation. I asking for any help to resolve this I make my payments and need a reliable ride for me and my kids and mother.
Rattling sound coming from engine. No determination as to what it is.
I bought my kia new from the dealership with an extended warranty. It currently has 83000mi on it. When I start it, it is making a rattling noise coming from the engine that only last a few seconds. We took it to the dealer and they are saying it needs a new engine because there are shards of metal in the oil pan. The cost to replace is $6000. The engine light has not come on at any point while owning the SUV, nor has any other light. We have maintained oil changes at every 4000mi or less but we completed all oil changes and filter changes our self. The master mechanic stated that there was no sludge in the engine and the engine looked to be well taken care of. The extended warranty is not wanting to cover the cost of the repair. We are still waiting to see what the dealership is going to do.
Wife driving from NY to conn, vehicle losing power, extreme shaking, grinding/rattle noise, engine light came on, stayed on, then blinking on and off, vehicle really running bad at this time. Following day, engine light still on, need to pump gas peddle to get started. Idle very rough. 2012 kia Sorento with 38;000 miles. Very concerned that vehicle will shut off completely, as is common per numerous complaints, at speed on the highway. Will bring to dealership tomorrow, however, have been researching kia Sorento engine problems this afternoon and it does not look good. 1) dealership techs unable to duplicate problems. (common) 2) recall to replace ecm but customers not notified as deemed not a safety issue by kia. Really???? 3) throttle actuator failure part of problem but not widely known by consumers. (common) important for 2012-to 2014 owners. New york has lemon laws. If your vehicle is less than 2 years old or has less than 18,000 miles and you have had to take it back for repairs several times, there are attorneys who live for this type of thing. I am in this group and sent e-mail today to just those type of sharks. Be pro-active, not re-active. I plan on having plan b in place if I find myself going down the path of "we don,t know what is wrong, the computer says your car is fine, just because you need to rent a room at the dealership because you are there so much does not mean we don,t care". What we really mean is we really don,t care!! reality check. . Fyi check this out. . . . . . . . . . . Read more...
I was driving the car when I suddenly started hearing rattling noises from the engine. The power steering stopped working and the steering wheel would not turn. Thankfully, I was on a side street with no other traffic. If I had been in traffic or traveling at a higher speed, this would surely have caused a crash. My mechanic says that the crankshaft bolt is sheared off and must be drilled out to be replaced. Kia won't cover this expensive repair, says it is not covered by their warranty. After researching this issue, I see that kia is aware of a defect in the bolt and has issued service bulletins and discontinued the bolt, issuing a new part to replace it. There are already numerous complaints on this and other sites due to this issue, spanning several model years. To date, I have not seen a recall from kia. Dangerous defect and alarming lack of concern (not to mention customer service) from kia. I would never have bought this car if I had known the gamble I was taking with my family's safety. I hope others will not make the same mistake.
