I have a 2005 kia Spectra, the front passenger seat has a feature that measures the weight of the passenger and turns on or off the front passenger air bag. Twice now with a full sized adult sitting correctly in the seat the air bag would turn off for no reason. Both times it happened while we were traveling down the highway or in city traffic. . . The air bag remained off for around 5-10 min when it just would turn back on. There was no cause that we could see for it to just turn off and on. During that time, if we would have crashed the air bag would not have deployed. Nothing has been done to correct the problem. No recalls have been issued.

I bought a new 2005 kia Spectra 5 (less than a month ago) with airbag sensors in the front passenger seat. On several occasions the passenger airbag disabled light has come on and stayed on with an adult sitting in the front seat. I have taken it back to the dealer twice for repairs. The first time, they said there was nothing wrong (and that the person may not have been sitting properly in the front seat). The second time, after stating that I was not leaving until something was done, the seat was removed and sent out for repairs. When I got the car back three days later, nothing had been fixed. While my car was in the shop, I was given a kia Spectra as a rental car. The rental car exhibited the exact same issues.
The contact stated the air bag light on the dashboard red turned off regardless of the weight of the passenger sitting in the seat. The vehicle has been taken back to the dealership three times. When at the dealer the air bag light red correctly, therefore no repairs have been made.
The contact states the passenger side air bag has a seat sensor and it should turn the air bag on when there is a passenger in the seat. The passenger is an adult male. The vehicle has been to a dealership, they could not duplicate the problem. Therefore, there have been no corrections made to the vehicle. Updated 11/29/2005 - the failure occurs each time the male passenger sat in the seat.
Car has sensor in passenger seat to disable passenger air bag. Air bag disable light comes on even when adult sitting in seat. Seat cushion and sensor was replaced by dealor but the problem still exists. Contacted kia directly and was told they are aware of the problem but have no fix. This is a very serious problem and could result in serious injury or death in the event of a frontal accident and tbhe passenger air bag does not deploy. From my research I find this is a common problem and not unique to my vehicle. I think a recall should be considered.
My complaint is not a traditional "failure" as you are accustomed to receiving on your website. My complaint is that kia has redesigned the airbag module in their newly designed Spectra model, and do not appear to have any plans for retro-fitting the new design to same model Spectras manufactured before Jan 2005. The new design was an improvement to allow the Spectra to raise its "poor" offset iihs frontal crash rating to something better. The new tests of the redesigned module upgraded offset frontal crash results to "acceptable". Smaller venting holes in the airbag are described as the primary change. It is stated that the test car was indeed a 2004. 5 model retrofitted with the new airbag module. My complaint is that if kia could retrofit an 2004. 5 model at to obtain a new test from iihs, they should be willing to offer that module upgrade free-of-charge to purchasers of the 2004. 5 and 2005 models built before Jan 2005. See the links below for more of the specific iihs details. . Read more...

Front air bag light doesn't consistently turn on when an individual is in the passenger seat. The consumer was told by the dealer that the air bag system activates at approximately 125 pounds. The consumer and passenger are both underweight to activate the system.
2004 kia Spectra. The consumer states the passenger seat has a feature that has a light that comes on if the person in the seat is less than 90 pounds, stating the airbag is off. This light comes on when there is an adult in the seat. The vehicle has been taken to the dealership, the seat was sent to houston, and it was recalibrated. The seat was doing the same thing, and nothing could be done until the dealership talked to a kia representative. This problem occurred since the purchase of the vehicle.
The dealer never disclosed the existence of the air bag sensor system. The air bad posed a possible safety risk to consumers that were petite and weighed 125 pounds or less.
2004 kia Spectra ex experienced air bag warning light problems. Person in passenger seat system not recognizing them. The consumer was informed that there was nothing the mechanic could do to remedy the problem. The air bag light did not consistently turn on when individuals were in the passenger seat.
While the passenger seat was occupied air bag sensor appeared on the dashboard. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that air bag sensor needed to be replaced. However, the mechanic was unable to locate the sensor. Therefore, mechanic replaced the passenger's seat. The problem recurred. Engineer informed consumer that the problem could not be duplicated. Also, stated that if vehicle was involved in a frontal collision the air bags would deploy.
Silencer pipe split which is no cause or damage from consumer, this was a defective part, my car has made an excessive exhaust noise for quite some time, which at first was diagnosised as the catalytic converter, later to discover from an authorized kia dealership that that was not the case the silencer pipe had split due to poor production. This I believe in turn also has affected my performance of my car and caused the purge valve that I must also replace to have failed leaving the check engine light on and when registeration comes due my car will not pass smog. I have had every scheduled maintanence outside the dealership no one could diagnosis the problem. Everyone can not afford to go to the dealership with their outrageous charges but I had to breakdown and go to pay 82. 00 for a diagnosis for at least 420. 00 worth of service that I must pay to get the problem corrected 315. 00 to replace silencer pipe that was already defective from manufacturer and 90. 00 for the purge valve these charges according to kia dealership include labor. Already losing the 82. 00 for the diagnostic. My car has only 57493 miles within the 4 years I have had it. I have had to also had the air bag module control replaced that had been defective from manufacturer on 6/21/01 and continue to have the same problem but my car is no longer under warranty thus I have to pay for another defective issue from kia, which was of no charge the first time but used my warranty?.
