Land Rover Discovery Ii owners have reported 6 problems related to abs brake fail (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2004 Land Rover Discovery Ii

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

I am the owner of a 2004 landrover discovery with approximately 60,000 miles on it. I have recently had intermittent failure of the abs modulator on my vehicle. The abs modulator controls the anti-lock brake system, the hill descent control and the traction control. When the abs modulator fails, those systems are no longer available. While turning off the vehicle and restarting the vehicle will reset the system, the abs modulator frequently occurs while the vehicle is moving. There is no warning for the failure, nor is there any pattern for the failure. The vehicle was in the dealer service center for this problem last week and this week and the diagnosis was for a replacement of the abs modulator. The abs modulator is a $2,800. 00 part, with the total cost, including labor resulting in a bill for $3,500. 00 to repair this safety issue. My family budget does not presently allow me to make this repair. In dealing the service center, I was informed that landrover is aware of the failure of the abs modulator and has issued at least 2 technical service bulletins for a less costly repair of same. However, I was informed that the success rate for those less costly repairs was exceedingly low. In conducting additional research on this topic, I found that this issue affects all landrover discovery's produced from 1999-2004, some landrover range rover models and some other landrover models. Landrover refuses to address the issue and refuses to make the necessary repairs to make this important safety components of their vehicles reliable. It would seem the NHTSA is ideally suited to make this company address safety defects in their vehicles. Please contact me should additional information be necessary.

2 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2003 Land Rover Discovery Ii

Failure Date: 08/01/2007

Land rover Discovery Ii abs fault. I cannot drive more than 5 miles without the abs, hill descent control, and transfer case warning lights illuminating. It is my understanding that this fault is a result of an abs system failure. After fault has been received by the cars computer, abs is non-responsive. This is a serious safety issue affecting many of the Land Rover discovery vehicles on the road. I have taken the car into my mechanic who has been unable to pinpoint the problem. Apparently more than one element to the abs system is defective. This occurs everyday and I'm still working on a resolution. I cannot sell the car in good conscious with such a hazardous problem.

3 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2003 Land Rover Discovery Ii

Failure Date: 09/12/2006

Hill descent control traction control and the abs light constantly light up, I just bought my car,(less than 2 months ago) when applied brakes sometimes do not work properly. I went to the dealer where I purchased the car only to be told that there is no warranty on electrical systems, I took the car to a service dealer and I was told that it will cost approximately 2500 dollars! I had other problems and I am very disappointed with my purchase. I have been told that all discoveries have this problem I feel that there should be a recall for this issue, this is my 3rd Land Rover and they all had abs failure.

4 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Land Rover Discovery Ii

Failure Date: 12/11/2005

Abs failure almost caused the vehicle to wreck, several times. Failure has occurred on several occasions, once in the last 4 months ($800) and now again, I have spent $$ to fix the hdc, tc, abs lights that keep coming on and causing the abs system to stop working. The abs modulator on 99 lr disco ii's I found out is defective, later models have shuttle valves that do not stick. Lr will not replace it, and the part is $1,800. I'm tired of throwing money at a truck we spent over $50k to purchase, and cannot use!.

6 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Land Rover Discovery Ii

Failure Date: 10/04/2004

Beginning at 50,100 miles, abs, hill descent and traction control warnings went off. Vehicle was stopped in regular traffic, no unusual weather or driving conditions. Dealer replaced 3 abs sensors and reset ecu codes. 200 yards after leaving shop, warning lights and chimes returned. Dealer attempted remedial work - error indicated stuck valve in abs pump - to no avail. Codes were re-set, two days later turning left, warnings and chimes returned. Land rover indicated that abs pump needs replacing is the only remedy (parts ~$2,000). Web search indicated that this is a very common issue with 99 discovery owners. Original recall work was done years ago to strengthen abs housing. Should abs fail at only 50,000 miles? been driving without abs since fourth time.
