Land Rover Discovery Ii owners have reported 6 problems related to brake antilock control unit/module (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Anti lock brake failure; multiple lights illuminte whe heavy braking down hills. All brake pads and rotors are new. Lights on dash extinguish upon restart. Very poor braking almost allowing vehicle to travel into cross traffic. Felt as though anti-lock system stopped functioning with standard braking remaining. Happended several times with myself and wife driving vehicle. Brought to dealer and looked up info on internet. Dealer indicated is was the antilock brake system modulator. Many complaints on rover websites about this going fairly early in life of vehicle. Dealership told my wife that there was still normal braking if lights are on,but it should not be used like your braking with antilock systems. I do not believe that landrover has not addressed this issue. This problem as caused several close calls when braking on limited hills. Dealership indicated part was $1500 and total job was $2100 to replace, but again said it was not necessary to do as braking would be there if lights were not on.

I was driving my Land Rover Discovery Ii on a parking lot and was about to park, as I turned the wheel to get to the parking space I applied the brake, which became hard as a rock and the vehicle didn't slow down, I crashed into the vehicle that was parked on the other side of the parking space. Prior to the accident I had , what is know in Land Rover forum as the 3 amigo lights, which are the t/c, h/d and abs light that are on at the same time. The brakes completely failed, again the pedal was hard as a rock and couldn't be pushed down.

The brake pedal is very soft. The traction control and abs lights flash on at-will. Took the vehicle into Land Rover anaheim hills who determined the abs modulator is going out and will need to be replaced. Purchased the vehicle with approximately 74k miles. Mileage when taken to dealership was 78,490. Five days after purchasing vehicle, had the rear brake pads replaced; yet, no improvement on braking distance, feel of brake pedal. When pumping the brake pedal rapidly twice, the brakes stop responsively. Otherwise, the brake pedal depresses a number of inches before actually halting the vehicle.

My wife and I took our '00 Land Rover Discovery Ii to anza borrego, CA for camping. To get to the campsite we had to take unpaved trails of certain difficulty rating. Most of which were rated 4-5 with 10 being the most difficult. All of a sudden, the abs/tc/hdc warning lights came on particularly on certain sections of the trail where there were inclines, ruts and gulleys. We got stuck so many times and even at one point almost tipped one side as only one wheel has power and all three were rather stationary. I couldn't get past trails that even some stock vehicle with adequate clearance can manage and had to be pulled and winched out. On some occasions the vehicle almost slid backwards as three wheels would not spin. I believe this is a safety issue that needs to be investigated and it never happens when on paved roads or highways other than the lights remain lit but all four wheels have traction.

I have a 2003 Discovery Ii and the abs modulator is having problems with three main lights illuminating constantly and they are traction control, abs and hill descent control, when the lights illuminate in amber color while I'm driving I have no use of traction control and abs also my brakes don't work well.
Periodically the abs, traction control & hill descent lights come on. Dealership indicates diagnostic codes reveal the shuttle valve inside the abs modulator is faulty and should be replaced.
