1 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/14/2013

I have a Land Rover free lander 2004 I bought it with 30,000 miles on it, it ran fine for a while then the child safety locks mal- functioned. The people who sat in the back seat could not get out I had to open the rear doors from the outside. The sun roof stop working as did the rear windows on both sides of the truck. I tried to start it three weeks ago no luck it was towed to the dealership they told me I needed two sensors $800 then they tested the engine the left side no longer worked $5800 to repair the truck that now has 87,000 miles. I thought these trucks were built to last. I loved the safety of these trucks but what good is safety it they do not last ?!?!?.

2 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

On November 1st my wife and I left la proper headed towards phoenix, az. With the mileage now at 49,807 and approximately 2 hours of driving on I 10 the car was losing power, so I did my best to safely pull over to the break down lane which was next to the on ramp (very scary). I had been driving at 65 miles per hour when the car would no longer accelerate. I had to call a tow truck because after I let it rest a minute or two it wouldn't turn over. When I looked under the hood I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, no smoke, the coolant tank was full, I checked the oil dipstick and it seemed fine. There were no lights that came on inside the auto to signal that something was wrong, no overheating etc. I had it towed to the nearest dealer and was told to come back next morning. I was told that the engine blew a gasket and was advised due to damage to the engine was to replace it. I was quoted a price of $10,000. 00! I ended up selling it for salvage for $500 since we were traveling so far away from home and the cost to tow it to rhode island didn't seem worth it. Since then I have contacted Land Rover and have been given the run around like many other owners. I also have had the chance since this occurrence to check via internet that this is not unusual for the 2002 Freelander. I feel this engine should of been recalled.

3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/29/2012

Was driving down the road during hurricane sandy and the car shifts (or lags) into extremely low gear, maybe 5-10 mph. The service engine, service engine soon, and other lights on dash came on and vehicle was lurching. Once I able move to the side of the road, I am able to turn the vehicle off, wait less than 5 minutes and turn back on, still doing same thing. Luckily friends house was just down the street, and cop stayed behind us until we got there. This vehicle had about 110,000 miles when we purchased from a private party out of state - three weeks and three hundred miles later the vehicle is now dead. These Freelanders are not dependable. I don't know what to do because it was fine when I bought it, and mechanic now says it needs 7,000 worth of work!! this is and would have been extremely dangerous, especially if you are on the highway driving the speed limit and the car just suddenly lags to 5 mph! please take these vehicles off the road!!.

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

I paid $2,700. 00 for an extended warranty throughlandrover/easycare my (2003 Freelander ) in June of 2007. The warranty is for 60months and up to 100,000miles. My vehicle has not been operable for over 2 months largely due to the difficulties of conducting what should be normal business with easycare. Easycare has been so difficult to deal with that the first car repair shop I took the vehicle to “advanced auto serviceâ€ chose to give up after getting nowhere with easycare. €œadvanced auto serviceâ€ stated “they are just too difficult to deal withâ€ and requested I pick-up/tow the vehicle to a Land Rover dealership, this was 3 weeks after I had dropped off the vehicle. I then had my vehicle towed to “howard orloffâ€ and the vehicle is still at howard orloff and has been there for 2. 5 weeks and counting. Howard orloff has expressed to me that major repairs need to be performed on to the engine. They have also expressed to me this engine repair was not due to “lack of maintenanceâ€ and that the appearance of “sludgeâ€ is not in excess. Howard orloff has relayed to me that easycare informed them engine repairs will not be covered, and have only given the reason of “lack of maintenanceâ€ – due to “sludgeâ€. On two separate occasions I have asked three of easycare’s staff (unknown name, allen phillips and supervisor john blank) to provide me with the reason for the denial of the engine repair claim. Both times they have refused to provide this documentation and/or the evidence for decision made. To date there has been no communication to me from easycare other than the 2 times I called. The requested information has never been provided to me, nor has easycare provided me with any documentation as to why they have denied, the required engine repair. Since I bought my warranty at howard oroff and through easycare, I expect them to work together to resolve these issues without me having to constantly waste my time. This car is truely a lemon.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 11/14/2010

1 numerous problems over several years, including (but not limited to) sudden loss of coolant and oil. And yesterday, a strong smell of hot oil, and sudden squealing from right, front wheel. 2 complete loss of engine power. Vehicle is no longer drivable. 3 contacted landrover.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 07/15/2010

The contact owns 2003 Land Rover Freelander. While driving approximately 10 mph he noticed that the temperature gauge displayed that the vehicle was hot. He pulled over, inspected the vehicle and noticed that the fan was running at a very high rate. The contact had to add anti freeze every other time fuel was added to the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who advised him to replace the engine because of a well know coolant failure. The local mechanic advised him to continue adding coolant and that if the failure continued to occur the seal could break, mix with the coolant and ruin the engine. The vehicle was purchased used in June 2010. The engine was destroyed when the complaint was filed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 58,000 and the current mileage was 80,000.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/19/2010

My 2004 Freelander was purchased from royalty auto sales in little ferry NJ on April 19, 2010 with 52,000 miles. We also purchased from same dealer a 1-year warranty from a warranty company represented by the dealer midatlantic warranty company. We put a $6,500 downpayment on the vehicle, and financed $7,000. The problem started within 24 hours after driving off the lot with an overheating issue we returned the vehicle to the dealer who said there was probably not enough antifreeze in it and offered to drive the vehicle for a few days to make sure it was o. K. Dealer maintained issue never happened again and returned the car to us. The car over the next month and one-half continued to overheat several times and require adding of antifreeze with no apparent leak under the vehicle. 2-months after purchase vehicle ceased to start and when towed to landrover was told it would need a new engine and these defects are known about in the automotive industry. To date neither the dealer nor the warranty company has either returned our money, vehicle or repaired the car. Someone should be responsible. Shame on landrover and any dealer that does not research the vehicles they represent as being safe and in good condition to unknowing consumers.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/04/2010

I bought the car new and it operated well until aprox. 80,000 mi when I would go through a reservoir of coolant every 20 miles. I took it to the dealer several times and they would keep it for a week, charge me $2,000 each time and say they could find nothing wrong. I addressed the problems documented on the internet about this problem and they responded that I should stop believing everything I read on line. On April 4, 2010 I checked the oil and it was full of coolant. The dealer said they still could not find the problem but the engine was shot and they would give me $800 for the car. Land rover has been defensive and unresponsive in dealing with the problem all along.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/29/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Land Rover Freelander. The contact noticed fuel leaking from the fuel tank. In the presence of an ignition source, the vehicle could have caught fire. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the fuel line disengaged from the fuel pump. The fuel line was reconnected. In addition, the traction control would sporadically engage. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that there was a faulty connection to the throttle body. Also, he experiences difficulty when attempting to remove the key from the ignition. The srs warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. A technician stated that the srs module needed to be replaced. Lastly, the heater cooler was replaced due to a persistent burning odor emanating from the vehicle. The manufacturer would not assume any responsibility because the vehicle exceeded its warranty. The failure and current mileages were 23,318.

Land rover free lander 2004, engine dies in cold temperature. It happened to three times in last two winters, when I am traveling on freeway in cold temperature. Vehicle's dies without any reason. It would start after an half hour or so, but each time it died, it was very cold and middle of nowhere. If I didn't have my survival kit,and blanket, I would have been died. When I have told this problem to dealers rep they said have got these complaints but couldn't find any problem. 13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/04/2009

Car lost power on highway after driving 10 miles at speed of 65-70 mph, exiting the highway. Temperature gauge showed high temperature only when decreasing speed. Coolant was smelled in the engine compartment. Car was towed to repair shop. Repair shop did not have proper equipment. Land rover of st. Louis was called. Repair dept. Told me that the repair would total more than the vehicle was worth, the engine had known problems for that model year. Nothing has been done, due to lack of funds and the advice of the repair shop.

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

After buying the car used @ 42,000 miles my 2002 Land Rover Freelander was immediately diagnosed a month after intermittent starting problems with a blown head gasket and I needed a new engine. My car is a safety hazard as it stopped randomly of a highway and left me stranded. I am not the only person experiencing this blown head gasket problem as it is an engineering failure of this SUV. Land rover will not help, this is a disgrace that so many people have suffered from this problem and nothing has been done.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/08/2008

My 2003 Land Rover Freelander broke down on the highway. Took it to scott motors of reno (the Land Rover dealer in reno), found out that it needs a new engine. I have an extended warranty through fidelity warranty, they are refusing to pay for it, saying that there is sludge in the engine. I have given them my maintenance records, the car was maintained regularly. Land rover of reno has had my car for 5 months while I have been trying to get someone to honor my warranty. I bought the car from internet auto of reno they are willing to reimburse me for my warranty of $2540. The cost to fix replace the engine is $7250, for the same engine. I have been told that there is no way to prevent this from happening again. I have been making payments on this car and still owe more on it than it is worth. So far no one is willing to pay for the repairs, the cost to replace the engine is as much as the car is worth, land rove knows of this problem, and fidelity warranty is not honoring their contract.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 03/18/2008

The engine started to overheat so I pulled over on the interstate and let engine cool, this continued until I was able to make it home. Dealer now says that the engine needs a new heads and head gaskets. Apparently this is a common problem on this vehicle. After locating this site I do believe that this is a defect in manufacturing.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 11/28/2007

Just a few days before my scheduled 72000 revision, the temperature gauge was acting up. The local dealer supposedly fixed the problem by replacing the thermostat for $2500. 10 days later same problem, now dealer wants $4200 just to open gaskets and perhaps engine may need to be replaced for $15000. That is more the the value of the car. Then I find dozens of people with the exact problem with the exact car on edmunds carspace.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/05/2007

I was driving to get dinner with my daughter and my landrover Freelander just fell dead while driving. This incident could have been fatal if it had happened on the freeway. I had the car towed to my home less than 2 miles away and had a certified Land Rover mechanic come to inspect the vehicle. He informed me that the motor locked up for no apparent reason. The car was not low on oil, nor had it been overheating and there were no other liquids mixed in the oil. The only option going forward would be to have the entire engine replaced. This vehicle has had one mechanical failure after another and is not worth the money spent.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/05/2007

My car has endless problems in every aspect!! anyone that owns one are having the same issues and nobody can seem to fix it, nor can I get parts to fix it, and the parts you do get to repair the vehicle break faster than the original parts on the car !! my engine has not failed yet but my transmission has and the dealer ship wont fix it and said there is nothing wrong with it !! iv paid more money fixing the car than I have for the car !! I can't go more than 1000 miles before something else breaks !! I have owned the car for about 18 months and its been in the shop for about 12 of those 18 months !! everyone that has one of these landrover Freelanders has the same issues and nobody can get parts for this car ! nothing works right and nothing runs like it should and even the mechanics at the dealer ship will take you aside and tell you get rid of it while you still can !!! I cant and neither can allot of others like me because of the money they have put into the car just to keep it on the road !! this car has left me and my 20 month old son stranded in the middle of nowhere on more than three or four or five occasions !! I lost track of how many times !! and when something goes wrong with this car your stuck wherever your at !! its not safe to walk down a freeway with a baby at any time during the day or night and that's exactly what iv had to do on many different occasions !! this is not a safe car by any means ! when my fuel pump went out my car just died at 60 miles an hour on the highway and nearly caused an accident with me and many other cars and I thank the good lord nothing happened when the car died and it felt like someone was slamming on the brakes !! this car is a safety hazard in the worst way !! kids should not be allowed too ride in this car do too the fact they might get hit by a car when it dies and leaves you on the freeway or anywhere else your at !! I don't let my son in this car unless its absolutely necessary !! I'll borrow my moms car just to go to the store with him !!.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/02/2007

Our well-maintained 2002 Freelander had engine and transmission failure within 6 months of reaching 50,000 miles. In both cases the failures occurred during highway driving with no warning lights or indications of problems. In both cases the loss of power/control posed a serious health hazard to everyone in the car. One of these events occurred immediately following service and safety check by the dealer. This care is so badly designed that is a driving hazard and should be recalled in its entirety. The very extensive information on major failures without warning attest to the dangers that this vehicle is imposing on the public on a daily basis.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/07/2006

In October of 2002 my husband and I purchased a 2002 Freelander from landrover north dade of florida. The car was in the showroom with minimal miles. Within three(3) days of purchase we returned the car because it shook violently after reaching a speed of 50 mph. I must admit the dealership advised us of some type of malfunction and offered us an exact replacement Freelander. At that point we should have asked for a refund of our cash payment and left landrover alone. It has been a completely expensive nightmare diving this lemon with its myriad of problems: repeated overheating, loss of power without warning (often times resulting in close call situations, replaced brakes and rotor (lost count), not to mention an air conditioner unit that only works on full power(imagine that in florida). At present, the vehicle is at an authorized landrover repair shop because the warranty has ended. The landrover dealership has been negligent even rude when approached regarding all these mechanical defects. Two weeks out of every two to three months, my young children and I are without transportation and at least $800. 00 minimum, each time. Most importantly however is my fear to drive the car at all, and to add insult to injury, we are offered $3000. 00 by carmax when we attempted to sell them a car we purchased for over $30,000. With 73k miles.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/12/2006

This is about transmission failure for 2002 landrover/freelander. Keeping the car in best shape and maintaining on schedule, still the transmission went bad with less than 40,000 mileage. Car warranty is for 50k or 4 years. Unfortunately, the warranty was up in January 2006. Engine has special noise and car is coming apart. Window does not roll up and down, rear seat got stuck and wouldn't get its position. One problem after another, but the main one is the transmission.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/19/2006

The contact owns a 2003 Land Rover Freelander. After driving 25 mph, the contact noticed smoke under the passenger side of the hood. She allowed the vehicle to cool down and drove to purchase antifreeze to replace what leaked out. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the vehicle was fine. When she returned to the dealer, they stated that a new engine would be needed. When the heat is activated, toxic fumes of burning antifreeze enter into the vehicle. 29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/22/2005

I bought a 2002 Land Rover Freelander as a 2nd owner of the vehicle from a local car dealership. Since the purchase of the vehicle, I replaced a sunroof, a transmission, the brakes require constant replacement (more often than should be necessary), a passenger door window motor and the engine has been replaced once and now has blown again - I am unable to have this engine replaced #1 there are no more engines as the landrover dealer only made this defective model 1 year and there have been so many engines replaced by other owners that there are no other engines available. Even if there were any engines I would not pay $10,000 to have another "defective" engine placed in this vehicle. There are over 1400 messages on the edmond forum. Com outlining other peoples similar complaints. This defective vehicle has caused countless people's credit to be ruined, and financial hardship to untold families. I wonder why nothing has been done already with all the complaints that have been filed. Landrover needs to reimburse these owners the money they have spent - such as myself on repairs, constantly in the shop and having to pay for rental vehicles. The local dealer was rude and had absolutely no sympathy and actually told me after bringing my vehicle in to them over and over that "he will be glad when my husband and I get out from under this vehicle" and admitted that this vehicle had been a problem for them. But. . . The dealer wouldn't even offer us a free oil change for all of our hardships. It is a shame. I hope eventually something is done before this company "bellies up" and files bankruptcy and all of these families that have been ruined will have no recourse for their financial woes as a result of this horrible situation. Please help any way you can!.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/15/2004

Numerous times the engine of my Freelander loses compression and the vehicle will not travel at a speed faster than 5 mph. The vehicle lurches and won't maintain a proper speed. The vehicle has been into the dealership several times. I have been told that they aren't sure what is wrong with it. Approximately 8 months ago the replaced the throttle body. The vehicle worked properly for 7 months. A month ago it happened again. This time I was on the expressway in between semi trucks. The vehicle lost speed and I could not tracel faster than 5 mph. I was able to get the vehicle off to the side of the road. I let it coll down for 20 minutes. When I started the vehicle it was able to drive. I took it to the dealership and they said that they didn't know what the problem was. However, they did state, "we have been having problems with this model. " I was told to drive the vehicle home and bring it back if it happened again. One week later, it happened again on the highway. Again' I let it cool down, and I was able to get it home. I made contact with the dearlership and Land Rover of north America, and not once have they asked to see the vehicle, offer to fix it, look at it. All the have attempted to do is for me to trade up to a discovery. The vehicle sits in my driveway because it is too dangerous to drive and Land Rover refuses to take the vehicle back, or even offer to fix it.
