Engine Problems of Land Rover Freelander

We purchased a 2002 landrover Freelander with 71,000. Regular maintenance had been performed on car by original owner and we continued it. In the first 2 year of ownership we had to replace the waterpump twice at $ 1,100 and $565. There was a recall on fuel filter after I had it replaced due to breaking down. Now, my wife was driving it and it broken down on side of highway with my 2 year old daughter from almost 2 hours. Shop called said needs new engine because block is made of alloy and cylinder sleeve made of steel. When they get hot expand at different rates. After a while this cause the sleeve to drop into lower block and the engine has to be replaced. It cannot be rebuilt. This cost at least $4,000 for engine plus repair. Do a internet search and see all complaints about this engine. Most go out between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Please do something about this and not let landrover get away with taking advantage of us citizen.

2002 Land Rover Freelander. Engine replaced at 56,000 miles, it is once again in shop for engine problems at 79,000 miles. Fuel pump replaced at 70,000 miles. 5-6 batteries have been replaced since owned car in 2005 and no one knows problem. This car has been in the shop at least 10 times for extended lengths since I've owned it. I have kept up with all oil changes and have taken very good care of this car. Everytime I research it, I find nothing but complaints a mile long. I believe there to be a serious problem with this car, and think that something should be done for the unfortunate owners of them.

The contact owns a 2002 Land Rover Freelander. The contact was at a complete stop when the vehicle staled without warning. The oil warning light illuminated. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle several times but to no avail. The vehicle was towed to a local automotive store where the battery was replaced. The contact was still unable to restart the vehicle. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. At less than 40,000 miles I needed to have my transmission replaced and less than 50,000 I needed to have the engine replaced because of a headgasket problem. Also many other problems with the vehicle but these were the major ones.

2004 Land Rover Freelander hse, engine problems at 50k miles- electrical problems, rear passenger window motor, very costly, bought the car in 2007 with 38k, hardly drive the car cause I travel for work and have rental cars, but when I do drive the Freelander- it causes me money, something will break even if I drive it for 5 miles. . . Land rover should compensate Freelander owners because these cars shouldn't be sold to us when the car itself is unsafe and a lemon in the beginning. . . Please- help!! incidental dates are too much to list!!.

In July 2004 I purchased a 2003 Land Rover Freelander hse with 25k miles. In the four and a half years of owning the vehicle we have had numerous problems. The sunroof failed twice and repaired under warranty and has since broke again. Three of the four window regulators have failed (2 fixed under warranty). I have just replaced the fuel pump @ 95k miles. Had to repair myself because the nearest dealer is 120 miles away and nobody else would work on it. Now it seems the head gasket or who knows what else has failed. We have to put a gallon of water in per week. Land rover has discontinued the sale of the Freelander in the us. This does not surprise me because of all the complaints due to the overall poor quality of a "luxury SUV".

Driving on freeway 65 miles an hour in the left lane attempting to pass a car. While accelerating, the car continued to lose speed. Had to maneuver my way to the right side of the freeway crossing 3 lanes of traffic in order to get to a safe place. Had the car towed to the dealership. We have been told that the engine blew up and it had to be replaced the cost of replacing the engine was more the replacement of the vehicle. The car only has a little over 60,000 miles on it and has been maintained on a regular basis. There was no warning that this might occur.

2002 Land Rover Freelander - over a 2 year period repeatedly took the car to Land Rover dealer for missing coolant - car fails to drive April 2006 - informed engine needs to be replaced - replaced engine July 2006 - ~8 dealer servicing including ~5 for engine related issues over the next one and half years - car fails to drive three times in 2 months - taken to Land Rover dealer for diagnosis each time of failure - told engine needs to be replaced June 2008 - Land Rover customer care center / service contacted repeatedly with escalation to a supervisor - Land Rover will not take any action to help resolve customer issue around defective engines - stand by 12 month warranty - one car, 2 engines failed/defective over 5 years ownership - manufacturer refusing to acknowledge product defects, take responsibility and assist customer to make good on subsequent product liability.

After buying the car used @ 42,000 miles my 2002 Land Rover Freelander was immediately diagnosed a month after intermittent starting problems with a blown head gasket and I needed a new engine. My car is a safety hazard as it stopped randomly of a highway and left me stranded. I am not the only person experiencing this blown head gasket problem as it is an engineering failure of this SUV. Land rover will not help, this is a disgrace that so many people have suffered from this problem and nothing has been done.

Land rover Freelander: the vehicle is a time bomb, at some point early in the vehicles life it will die on you while driving. . . . You then have a very short time to get of the road before it locks up. It then becomes a money pit!!!.

03 Land Rover free lander. 85k miles engine died with no explanation. Towed to Land Rover dealer and they said that there is nothing they could do except put me on a waiting list for a new engine that would cost over $8000 to fix and could not guarantee that I would even get an engine at all. The truck is a total loss and I still have a loan to pay off. I am in shock over the fact that I no longer have a vehicle and Land Rover could not care less! after reading on and on about this same problem with every other owner it appears to me that Land Rover should be punished for selling such a vehicle! we as the consumers should also be compensated or justified for such a loss after putting faith into a well known "high end" company. I am willing to be a part of a class action lawsuit and I know there are many others willing to bring Land Rover to justice.

The contact owns a 2003 Land Rover Freelander. The contact stated that the vehicle began smoking heavily underneath the hood. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and completely shut off. The dealer stated that the coolant was mixing with the engine oil and the engine needed to be replaced. The engine model in the contact's vehicle has been discontinued. The dealer stated that they could order the engine, but there is a long waiting list and they do not know when it would arrive. The failure and current mileages were 37,000. Updated 05/19/08. The engine/head gasket issue is the repair that is the most critical and terminal condition for the vehicle. The dealers mechanics will never fix the gasket, so they will only offer the engine replacement, but either repair will cost you more than the SUV is worth. And yes, the brake pads and then rotors wear out very quickly, because of the weight of the vehicle (the dealer says). I personally think it has more to do with the fact that there are 2 disc front brakes and 2 drum rear brakes on the vehicle, hence the wear and weight all goes to the front of the vehicle. Another poor design flaw issue, and I was told the drum brakes were there to better allow the off-roading. Yeah, who ever could off road these things, they fall apart on the driveway!.

(1) engine coolant level diminishing; coolant bottle replaced several times heater core also replaced (2) engine now needs to be replaced (3) Land Rover denies accountability and states they will provide engine with labor cost being extended to me!.

Just before major odometer readings of 30000, 40000 etc vehicle loses power. The problem is elevated when the vehicle is turned off and started again.

The contact owns a 2002 Land Rover Freelander. While driving, the heat shut down inside the vehicle. The dealer stated that her heater coil failed. The contact took the vehicle to a different mechanic because it was out of warranty. The heater coil was repaired. Approximately ten months later, the vehicle failed inspection. The mechanic performed a diagnostic but was unable to determine the cause of failure. As the inspection was being performed, the vehicle lost all power and would not restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who disassembled the engine and removed the head gasket. She left the vehicle at the dealer and a few days later, the dealer stated that the engine was completely dead. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure and stated that nothing could be done because the vehicle was out of warranty. The federal trade commission would not help either. The current and failure mileages were 61,034.

My 2002 Land Rover Freelander began to overheat while I was commuting from NY to NJ via holland tunnel. Once out of the tunnel I pulled over to check under the hood. It was severely hot. I added coolant and waited approx 15 minutes before completing the 7 minute commute to my home. The next attempt to start the vehicle failed. I had the vehicle towed to Land Rover in paramus. The engine was burnt out and I had to have it replaced.

The 2002 Land Rovers Freelanders have overheating problems and causes the engine to lock and cause accidents on the road. All Freelander become lemon. . The failures happen when the car turns 5ok miles. I found out that thousands of people who bought the same car have had this problem . And dealer won't even supply the parts to fix the problem. The Freelanders were rip off and Land Rover dealership stop making after they found out that the car was a total disaster both for the company and they customers. But still no recalls ordered or service campaign is ordered to save the people who paid top dollar for a lemon.

2003 Land Rover Freelander would not accelerate and lost power. Vehicle wouldn't start. Upon inspection mechanic determined the bolt that holds the upper cam started to back out. The engine blew at 56869 miles. The dealer recommended that the consumer replace the entire engine. The vehicle was out of warranty therefore the consumer was going to be responsible for the repairs.

Our 2002 Land Rover Freelander began to over heat at 63,216 miles. We were lucky in that we were at a drive through near our house. We took the car home right away. Upon getting an appointment with the dealer, the car was taken in for inspection. The long block needed replacing. This was due to the fact that a cylinder sleeve had slipped. We were able to get the engine replaced. Upon further discussion with the dealer, it seems to be known that the engine will fail. This dealer has had owners come in for their 3rd motor all within the warranty. The life expectancy seems to be between 30,000 and about 65,000 miles. We are lucky that we were not anywhere far away or my wife was on business. This seems to be a bad design and right now it looks like Land Rover will do nothing about it. Those whom are out of warranty are out of luck.
