Original owner of Land Rover Freelander 2003. At approximately 60,000 miles, the "service engine soon" light came on and engine had to be replaced due to problems caused by the coolant leaking into the engine. At the time, the car was under an extended warranty so most of the repairs were covered. Now, at approximately 86,000 miles, the "service engine soon" has again appeared. I took the car to a Land Rover repair facility and was told that the car requires a new manifold intake valve. Total cost of repairs around $3,000. At this point, I am totally disgusted with Land Rover and will never ever buy or recommend a Land Rover vehicle. This car has been nothing but a major headache.
After knowing about the coolant problems of this car we took care, had an coolant flush and regularly control that there was enough coolant. When we noticed that the coolant was running low, we topped it off, but this happened again and again without any obvious leaking. The repair facility saw some cracks in the coolant tank so we changed it, a few days later the car did not work at all and hand to be towed. The whole engine had to be change; the explanation was coolant was leaking and mixing with oil. Now, with the new engine there are again warning lights blinking and repair facility told us we could need a new intake manifold. Meanwhile the coolant was low again and we had to change the thermostat because they found a leaking there. There are so many complaints with the coolant and engine to find in the internet and even on this page, so when do they recall the coolant system and engine??.
I have a 2002 Freelander that I bought new in 2002. I have had nothing but problems with it. Most recently the truck was undriveable for several months at the beginning of 2008 due to overheating. Finally saved enough money to take it and have it repaired. Have driven it for 5 months and am again losing coolant. Have paid several thousand dollars for repairs due to overheating and other issues over the last year. Now, the right rear passenger window motor is dead. Like many others who own these vehicles, the transmission had to be replaced. There are clunking noises when it is put in gear. There is an electrical gremlin that makes the rear window go up and down for no reason. I have had the sunroof stuck open and had that fixed. The motor was tapping constantly and the dealer told me the sound was normal. An independent mechanic repaired the tapping noise which was the intake manifold. My truck has been out of warranty and I'm out of money.

We were hearing a loud noise and had no idea what it was. As it turns out we were first told that it needed a new engine, however after careful diagnostics we were finally told that it needs a new intake manifold. This is about $2200. That includes labor costs and part. I have no money and the car just sits in the front of my house and is not drivable at all. I still owe so much on this car and have no idea what to do. . . .

Have had multiple problems with vehicle with replacements needed for the following items: sunroof assembly, brakes and rotors twice, coolant tank, coolant tank lid, intake manifold assembly, wiper switch, 2 vacuum hoses, window regulator, sunroof drain tubes and headliner. Now, despite maintaining the recommended service schedule, we are going to have to have the engine replaced at 67k miles. The coolant is leaking into the oil and after having the head gaskets replaced and a cooler part replaced, the dealer now believes that there is a crack in the sleeve. There apparently is a back order on replacement engines so I will have to cough up $$$ to keep the oil drained and coolant filled until one is available. Why should a $35,000 vehicle need an engine replaced at 67k miles?.
I own a 03' Freelander with only 34,000 miles on it. At this stage in a vehicle's life, there should be very little mechanical problems. It has not been the case for me. I have had this car for 1 and 1/2 years and problems began occurring 1 year after ownership. There is the smell of burnt antifreeze inside the car and an even stronger smell outside the car once the engine is turned off. The smell is toxic and I'm afraid that the fumes could easily impact someone's driving ability if not have the driver go unconscious after a long road trip. I have read about this problem existing on many other Freelander vehicles on blogs and customer reviews. Something ought to be done. Also, for the past few days, I've been hearing a clicking noise coming from my engine. I immediately took my car to a repair shop to get checked out. The owner of the shop operated on my vehicle and discovered the engine manifold needed to be replaced ($970 part + $240 service). He contacted the lr parts dealer and the dealer notified him that this is a constant occurrence. In fact, dealer said that he had received 4 other phone calls the same day for the same exact part. This is ridiculous. Lr needs to take proactive steps in resolving these problems. This is a frequent occurrence and implies that there were problems with the manufacturing of these vehicles. As of right now, these frivolous repairs are costing Freelander owners lots of money, and in the future, as these cars become a bit older, they will cost people lives. I urge you to please take corrective action and help in orchestrating a recall on this part. Thank you, robert gleyzer.
Freelander 2002 has had many defects. The transmission failed at approx. 50k miles & was replaced. Power windows failed. A/c hose cracked & repaired. Manifold replaced. Exterior brake lights have been replaced. Electrical power to passenger door lock system have been replaced. Now, at 70k miles the coolant leaking and engine knocking. Not worth replacing engine at this point. This car has cost more to repair than what is was worth. It should be recalled as a lemon & law suit against Land Rover.
During the repair of our transmission, we began to get check engine lights. After the transmission was fixed, it was taken to the dealer for service. Upon driving to the dealer, the car had no power. This became very difficult to drive and dangerous. Trying to get up to the 65 mph speed limit on a freeway took almost 2 miles. I was also worried the car would stall in traffic due to this condition. The car was serviced and it was determined that the mass airflow sensor and the variable intake motors 1 and 2 had failed. The variable intake motors had failed 15,000 miles /12 months before and were replaced during the long block replacement. After all repairs were completed the car was taken home. The next day the check engine light came on. The following day I scheduled an appointment. During the drive to the dealer, the same power problems were present. This made driving this car dangerous in that there was no way to know if it would accelerate. The dealer then determined that the air intake manifold gasket had cracked. This too was a new part from the long block repair 15,000 miles /12 months prior. Right now this repair is being performed. The Land Rover dealer acknowledges that these car should not be owned without any type of warranty due to the numerous problems.
I took my vehicle to landrover when I noticed a loss of power in engine & tapping noise while it was in warranty. A few times landrover classified my problem as the throttle, which happened to be a recall item. Once they did the "recall" repair on the throttle in 4/05, I took it back a few days later because there was no change after the initial "recall repair". Than I was told it was a common problem among all Freelanders. Now that the vehicle is out of warranty, I learned about a TSB that came out a year after I reported my problem for my identical problem that existed than and now that landrover tech's misdiagnosed, mistaken or ignored for something else. They are clever enough not to include what the customer complaint is on the repair ticket & only include what they did. The loss of power is unpredictable and is a hazard that landrover is fully aware of per the TSB listed below. It's disturbing that the repairs done to my vehicle under "recall" never fixes the problem. The roof & pillars recall was fixed twice when in warranty and broke yet again and remains broken. Landrover now wants to charge to fix it again. Why, the fix doesn't work. The vehicle hasn't stopped yet, eventually it will get to the point where I can't drive it because of the unpredictable behavior. Kv6 variable intake manifold system (vis) motor diagnostic aid 19/01/06/nas fgn 310-00 ref: 19/03/03/nas ta02tb01, ta021901, ta031901 issue: 1 date: 26 June 2006.
Bought the car new in 2004. In less than 4 years the service engine soon light came on over 8 times resulting in 5 vis motor replacements, 2 oxygen sensor replacements and one replacement of the entire intake manifold. In addition the battery had to be replaced twice because it was "swollen and cracked" and the rear window regulator was replaced because the rear window fell and would not come back up. Luckily it did not break and injure anyone when it fell. Coolant level was also "always low. " system was pressure tested and no leaks were found but I was concerned about a possible defective head gasket.

During high speeds (55-70 mph) car would down shift into low gear for no reason. Check engine light would come on shortly after and car ran rough. On one occasion while pulling out onto a highway the car would not accelerate. Brakes replaced at approx. 11k miles. All recommended service was done on time according to the passport schedule. Stopped to get gas and car would not start. Had to get car towed 40 miles and take a taxi home. I went to arbitration with lrna and I got a 2005 replacement. See my 2nd post about this truck - engine is shot- head gasket broken, thermostat shot, breaks at 25k miles, cracked manifold, cracked engine hoses.
2002, Land Rover, Freelander, leaks motor oil through the rear main engine seal, coating the entire underside of the vehicle. When vehicle is in use the heated oil emits a strong smell of burning motor oil from the exhaust system heat. The defect was blatantly ignored during maintenance at dealership October 4, 2004.

According to the dealership in charlotte, nc overheating is a known defect due to inadequate engine exhaust fan.
